Summary Waterbird counts were carried out in 48 sites across Kenya during the months of January and February 2018. A total of 294,950 individuals of 126 waterbird species were recorded. Lake Bogoria had the highest number with 165,852 individuals of 34 waterbird species followed by Lake Nakuru with 23,144 individuals of 73 species and Tana River Delta with 16,143 individuals of 69 species. The highest number of waterbird species was recorded at Lake Nakuru with 73 species, followed by Lake Ol’Bolossat with 72 species and Lake Naivasha with 71 species. The most abundant species was Lesser Flamingo Phoeniconaias minor with 163,164 individuals followed by Greater Flamingo Phoenicopterus ruber with 14,155 and Little Stint Calidris minuta with 11,401. -

Figure8. The limited rank hydrophilic sedge and grass patches within the central valley bottom wetland provide suitable roosting and foraging habitat for African Grass Owls. The high levels of human disturbances on the site including hunting with dogs; severely restricts the likelihood of any nests and limits potential roosting suitability. The annual burning of the site restricts the vegetative cover along the valley bottom wetland. Off-road bikes, quads and vehicle tracks transverse the entire site as well as helicopter training and landing on the site and open areas to the south of the site adjacent to the Waterval cemetery. African Grass Owls are found exclusively in rank grass, typically, although not only, at fair altitudes. Grass Owls are secretive and nomadic breeding in permanent and seasonal vleis, which it vacates while hunting or post-breeding, although it will breed in any area of long grass and it is not necessarily associated with wetlands. It marshlands it is usually outnumbered by the more common Marsh Owl (Asio capensis) 10:1 (Tarboton et al. 1987). Grass Owls nest on the ground within a system of tunnels constructed in mostly tall grass; peak-breeding activity (February- April) tends to coincide with maximum grass cover (Steyn 1982). Grass Owls specialise in large rodent prey, particularly Otomys vlei rats, although a wide range of rodent prey species, including Rhabdomys, Praomys, Mus, and Suncus, are taken (Earle 1978). Some local and nomadic movements in response to fluctuating food supplies, fire and the availability of suitable habitat can be expected (Steyn 1982). The ecological requirements of this species make it susceptible to many land-use changes impacting contemporary South Africa. -

Side-striped Jackal/Greater Galago/Roan Antelope/Blotched Genet Trip Summary This was our first ever fully comprehensive tour to Malawi and was quite simply a fantastic experience in all respects. For starters, many of the accommodations are of excellent quality and are also situated in prime birding locations with a large number of the area’s major birding targets found in close proximity. The food is generally very good and the stores and lodges are for the most part stocked with decent beer and a fair selection of South African wine. However, it is the habitat diversity that is largely what makes Malawi so good from a birding point of view. Even though it is a small country, this good variety of habitat, and infrastructure that allows access to these key zones, insures that the list of specials is long and attractive. Our tour was extremely successful in locating the vast majority of the region’s most wanted birds and highlights included Red-winged Francolin, White-backed Night Heron, African Cuckoo-Hawk, Western Banded Snake -

DGSR Fauna 1 Discovering Great Sandy Region Chapter 5 Animals of the Dunes The animals of Fraser Island and Cooloola are not readily apparent to the casual observer. The most obvious are birds and dingoes. Despite the obscurity of the fauna it presents an impressive range to those with the patience to explore and discover. This is because much of the fauna is lies buried in the sand or hidden by the great bulk of biomass or else it is either well camouflaged, very timid, or very small. However, it is not necessary to see animals in the wild to be attracted by them. Tens of thousands of anglers are used to searching out invisible targets as they seek the pelagic tailor during the winter months, and bream, whiting trevally and flathead at any time of the year. However, there are many other interesting animals in the sea around Fraser Island and Cooloola than those which delight the anglers. These mammals and reptiles are not the targets of anglers but the subject of much interest of those who are seeking to understand the environment and the many niches in and around Fraser Island and Cooloola. Although Fraser Island and Cooloola lack large populations of bigger terrestrial animals, they boast many rare and unusual species. One study in Cooloola alone identified over 300 species of ants, many new to science. In the aquatic environment the acidity of some of the peaty swamps has been so hostile that a specialized group of frogs known as "acid frogs" has evolved to fill this unique niche. -

From these, we collected a total of 157 owl pellets. Analysis and examination of the pellets revealed 329 prey items. More in-depth investigation determined that 95.1% of the Eastern Grass Owl pellets collected consisted of mammal remains, while the remaining 4.9% were made up of bird remains. Of the various types of mammals consumed, rats made up the highest proportion, with a total of 285 rats, accounting for 86.6%. This was followed by 27 shrews and moles, accounting for 8.2%. Hares and birds were seldom caught and consumed. The findings suggested that rats are the main food source of the Eastern Grass Owl, with the Spinus Country-rat (Rattus losea) comprising the majority with 136 counted (41.3%), followed by the Formosan Mouse (Mus caroli) with 96 counted (29.2%). -

Zambia and Namibia A Tropical Birding Custom Trip October 31 to November 17, 2009 Guide: Ken Behrens All photos by Ken Behrens unless noted otherwise All Namibia and most Zambia photos taken during this trip INTRODUCTION Southern Africa offers a tremendous diversity of habitats, birds, and mammals, and this tour experienced nearly the full gamut: from the mushitus of northern Zambia, with their affinity to the great Congolese rainforests, to the bare dunes and gravel plains of the Namib desert. This was a custom tour with dual foci: a specific list of avian targets for Howard and good general mammal viewing for Diane. On both fronts, we were highly successful. We amassed a list of 479 birds, including a high proportion of Howard’s targets. Of course, this list could have been much higher, had the focus been general birding rather than target birding. ‘Mammaling’ was also fantastic, with 51 species seen. We enjoyed an incredible experience of one of the greatest gatherings of mammals on earth: a roost of straw-coloured fruit bats in Zambia that includes millions of individuals. In Namibia’s Etosha National Park, it was the end of the dry season, and any place with water had mammals in incredible concentrations. The undoubted highlight there was seeing lions 5 different times, including a pride with a freshly killed rhino and a female that chased and killed a southern oryx, then shared it with her pride. In Zambia, much of our birding was in miombo, a type of broadleaf woodland that occurs in a broad belt across south / central Africa, and that has a large set of specialty birds. -

We describe behaviour, including vocalisations, of all except the Eastern Grass Owl, provide measurements of Eastern Barn Owl and Sumba Boobook specimens, including the first published weights, and the first egg measurements for Eastern Barn Owls on Sumba. We discuss the taxonomy of the Eastern Barn Owl and Sumba Boobook, and support a change of common name for Sumba Boobook to Sumba Hawk-Owl. Studies are urgently needed to determine the status and conservation of all four owl species said to occur on Sumba. Introduction The island of Sumba lies at 10°S and 120°E in the Lesser Sunda chain in south- eastern Indonesia (see Olsen & Trost 2007 for a description). Del Hoyo et al. (1999) listed three owls for Sumba. We add the recently discovered Little Sumba Hawk-Owl Ninox sumbaensis (Olsen, Wink et al. 2002) to Table 1. -

Africa’s large mammals are certainly a big attraction that one never tires of, but it’s often the smaller mammals, diverse birdlife and incredible reptiles that draw one back again and again for another unparalleled visit. Seeing a breeding herd of elephant for instance will always be special but there is a certain thrill in seeing a Lichtenstein’s hartebeest, cheetah or a Lilian’s lovebird – to name but a few. As a globally discerning traveller, look beyond the obvious, and challenge yourself to learn as much about all wildlife aspects and the ecosystems through which you will travel on your safari.
