Victory for China at ABU Robocon 2012 〜 ABU Robocon Award to the University of Tokyo 〜
TOKYO, 19th August 2012
17 teams of students from 16 countries and regions competed at the ABU Asia-Pacific Robot Contest (ABU Robocon) in Hong Kong today. This year marked its eleventh event.
The venue was filled with excited and enthusiastic viewers cheering on teams. University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (China) and Lac Hong University (Vietnam) advanced to the final, which were the same as the final match of ABU Robocon 2010 in Cairo. After an exciting game, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China beat Lac Hong University. University of Electronic Science and Technology of China won the Grand Prix, and received the award and a trophy. This is the fifth victory for China, a record in the history of ABU Robocon.
The University of Tokyo represented Japan in Robocon for the fourth time. The University of Tokyo was beaten in the semi-final match by Lac Hong University, but was awarded the ABU Robocon Award, which is the top honor that commends the most preeminent team in ideas, originality, creativity and technology.
ABU Robocon will be held in Vietnam next year. NHK will domestically broadcast a program “NHK Robocon 2012 Hong Kong” (Working title) on its terrestrial channel (General TV) from 14:00 to 14:59 on 17th September (JST).

Notes to editors
<ABU Robocon> This contest started in 2002 at the instigation of NHK in order to cultivate young engineers and promote international friendship between the countries as well as to enhance quality of program production in Asia-Pacific region.
<Rules of ABU Robocon 2011> This year’s theme was “Peng On Dai Gat” in honor of a traditional festival in Hong Kong. Two teams competed against each other, and robots were the bun-snatchers within the game. Robots travelled through the tunnel, crossed the bridge and landed on the island. The first team to snatch the lucky buns on the tower on the island was the winner. .
