Course Objectives The objectives of this course are as follows: Gymnastics: 1. To introduce students to the basic skills of , Sports Acrobatics, , and Trampoline & . 2. Students will learn the progression of gymnastic skills and proper spotting techniques for these skills and apply these skills in a lab setting. 3. Students will learn how to assess pupil readiness for gymnastics and coaches responsibilities. 4. Students will learn the legal liability of a program including facility design, use of teaching equipment and safety equipment, inspection of equipment, and medical requirements. 5. Students will learn motivation skills for athletes & stretching and strength techniques. 6. Students will learn how to design and participate in dance choreography. 7. Students will practice coaching skills by working with gymnastics students. Backpacking: 1. Students will demonstrate the ability to start a backpacking stove; prepare a meal; erect and store a backpacking tent; and pack, carry, and adjust a loaded pack. 2. Students will be able to demonstrate proper hiking techniques, campsite selection, and start a campfire. 3. Students will learn how to use a map and compass including: reading a map, understanding contour lines, measuring distances, orienteering a map to the compass, using deviations, and orienteering skills. 4. Students will learn how to tie basic knots for camping and rock climbing. 5. Students will demonstrate the techniques for paddling and steering canoes and kayaks, carrying, and loading equipment and passengers. 6. Students will understand Low Impact Camping and fire building skills. 7. Students will learn how to deal with emergencies while in the field. Self-Defense: 1. Students will learn awareness skills, how to avoid placing themselves in dangerous situations, and how to handle themselves if confronted by an assailant. 2. Students will learn self – defense skills that can be used to protect themselves if confronted by an assailant. 3. Students will learn how to protect themselves in the home, in their car, or around campus. 4. Students will practice physical resistance techniques and self-defense skills. 5. Students will learn about personal protection devices and their uses.

Attendance Attendance is required. The fourth unexcused absence will result in an F in the class. An excused absence (to be determined by the instructor in cases of illness, etc.) must be reported as soon as you return to class or it will be counted as unexcused. Excused absences will not affect your grade. Assignments

Gymnatics: 1. Papers. Students will prepare 4 papers for gymnastics on the following topics. a. Progressions of a tumbling skill; b. Development of coaching techniques; c. Progressions for Sports Acrobatics; and d. Analysis of a tumbling pass. 2. Students will develop spotting skills by spending 1 hour for 6 weeks in a gymnastics class. 3. Students will teach a 1 hour gymnastics class. 4. Students will prepare a ten-week teaching unit in gymnastics. This will include a one- day detailed teaching plan on a skill; test to check skills, and teaching aids. Backpacking: 1. Students will participate in teaching orienteering to an elementary school group. 2. Students will participate in class activities to learn backpacking skills. 3. Students will prepare a five-week teaching unit in backpacking, including all the activities practiced. 5. Students will attend a weekend backpacking trip exhibiting their skills. Self-Defense: 1. Students will participate in class activities involving practice of self-defense techniques. 2. Students will develop activities to assist elementary school going to and coming from school, as well as things to look for while at school that could present a threat to them. 3. Students will prepare a five-week teaching unit in self-defense for an elementary school class, including all the activities practiced.

Grading Your grade will be based on the following: Gymnastics: Quizzes 15% Lesson Taught 5% Lab Spotting Skills 10% Papers 20% Teaching syllabi 20% Theory exams 30% Backpacking: Quizzes 10% Equipment Care and Proper Usage 20% Skill Tests 50% Adhering to Trail Usage Guidelines 10% Teaching Syllabi 10% Self-Defense: Quizzes 20% Papers 20% Skills Test 50% Teaching Syllabi 10%

Grading Standards Grades will be determined based on the following percentages: B+ = 89-88 C+ = 79-78 D+ = 69-68 F = 59 and below A = 100-92 B = 87-82 C = 77-72 D = 67-62 A- = 91-90 B- = 81-80 C- = 71-70 D- = 61-60

Miscellaneous 1. You are expected to be present at all class periods. 2. Assignments are to be turned in at the beginning of the class period when they are due. Late assignments will receive a 5% grade reduction for each week they are overdue. 3. Quizzes will be announced and may be made up for extenuating circumstances only. When made up, quizzes must be taken on the day you return to class. There will be no exceptions. One quiz will be dropped. 4. All work must be your original composition and follow rules of honesty. Failure to follow these guidelines will result in a failure in the assignment or, where appropriate, in the class. 5. The instructor reserves the right to alter this syllabus should circumstances so warrant. 6. Students should turn off cell phones during classes. If you come in to class late, do so quietly so as not to disrupt class. Please no food or drink in the classroom.
