Among the most remarkable creations in nature is the bird feather. Its refinements boggle the mind in their depth and complexity, enabling a wide range of flight styles in nearly all environments. The feather is one of the most durable and long-lasting structures in animal life. It is a miracle of bio-engineering, balancing strength, extreme levity and the highest levels of insulation. A wing makes flight possible because of its air-foil effect: The curved shape of the top forces air to speed up, spreading out the molecules and creating slightly lower air pressure on the top compared to the bottom. This gives the bird lift, as the wing wants to rise to adjust to the pressure difference. Through this simple mechanism, flight becomes a reality. Wing shapes and flight styles cover an amazing spectrum, from the albatross, with its slender, 12-foot wings designed for gliding thousands of miles over windy oceans to the unassuming wrentit, with its rounded wings designed for flitting through brush in a territory smaller than an acre. The wrentit, and most passerines, accomplish flight with a burst of flapping to gain altitude, followed by a glide with outstretched wings. A similar style is the bounding flight of a woodpecker, which alternates bursts of flapping with glides in which the wings fold back against the body. Ducks come sweeping into ponds and marshes like fighter squadrons. Their slender, boomerang-shaped, high-speed wings enable a constant, powered flight style. Other high-speed birds, such as falcons and swallows, use the same wing shape to achieve both high velocity and extreme agility. Quite opposite is the thermal soaring of eagles and vultures, which employ broad wings and rising air masses to gain lift. For all this breadth of style, flight feathers are remarkably similar across species. The primary wing feather of a humming- bird has essentially the same structure as that of an eagle one thousand times its weight. I was thinking of these things on a walk near the coast when a turkey vulture flew by at a low altitude. It circled as it caught a wave in the breeze caused by the small rise where I stood. As the bird circled several times overhead, I could see it adjust- 4 N O R T H C O A S T E R | Spring and Summer 2017

The physics of air contained the possibility of flight; life ultimate insulator, and two types of sensory feathers, plumes and quills, which responded and started an ever-refining process of adaptation. Rooster

By Jim Pellegrin

For Khizr and Ghazala Khan, American heroes

Look at you, strutting around with your chest puffed out So full of yourself, no: so helplessly in love with yourself So superior to all others. It’s true, you’re really quite a sight As you fly down with a flourish from your perch, your gold Hairpiece, your huge claws, your iridescent peacock tail Gleaming in the morning sun, which you honestly believe You have commanded to rise.

You are a magnificent creature, striking awe and fear Into a world of inferior beings, dangerous enemies Eager to do you wrong. A world that is, let’s face it An affront to your royal pride. No wonder your red eye gleams In righteous anger: you are the self-appointed enforcer of the Pecking order, relentlessly tormenting the smallest, weakest hen Chasing her down and isolating her and Beating her bloody.

Of course, you are doing this for the others. It may seem cruel, but she is ugly and worthless and Stealing the good hens’ food, isn’t she? Who else will defend against such weakness, such losers?

Of course, when the hawk flies over or the fox is near You hustle off squawking, flapping your wings to save yourself, For, like all bullies, you’re a coward at heart, a chicken, as they say.

As for the hens, all hens: you are obviously God’s gift to Those who are worthy of your attentions. There, you’ve just placed a choice bit of food before a favored one A beautiful piece of spaghetti that God knows you could have gulped Down yourself, but which you’ve generously offered to her: a true sacrifice. The hen will eat it, too, knowing she’ll have to suffer you later, but Clucking to herself that it will take only a few seconds To satisfy your adolescent lust, shrug it off And get back to the business of laying eggs And raising her beautiful chicks. Whatever.

And now you’ve cocked your head to one side Your tiny brain wondering what to do next. That’s it: crow! Time for another good, loud crow. “Cock-a-doodle do! I am your voice! Cock-a-doodle do! I alone can save you! Cock-a-doodle do! I am the biggest The bravest, the most irresistible! Cock-a-doodle-do!”

Atta boy, rooster. Keep crowing. Keep it up. For a while it was entertaining to watch your clownish antics But one day soon, even this bored world will wake up and say Enough is enough. One day soon you will cross the line You will hurt the hen once too often or turn your Violent anger on a child or the hand that feeds you And then I will call my friends Luis and Manny People who know what to do With an arrogant, mean rooster.

One day, your greatness, we will cut off your golden head Let you run around the henhouse spouting red blood Instead of black hate and fear, we will pluck your Proud feathers, throw you into the stew pot, and yes My pompous friend, we will eat you for dinner. So keep it up, your magnificence, crow your head off. We are boiling the water, we are sharpening the ax. 6 N O R T H C O A S T E R | Spring and Summer 2017

Easier than you’d think

By Samantha Kimmey

Here’s how we did it: one person held the warm body of the bird and the other person gently pulled on the head, to extend the neck, and that person snipped their tiny heads off with scissors, like an elementary school craft project. A lot of things came after: for instance, we held their bodies away from our bodies by their feet as the blood dripped out. Within seconds, something inside the decapitated quail snapped: its wings started flapping, furiously, trying to get away, but way too late. Then we dunked their bodies in the steaming vat of water so it was easy to remove the feathers, and then we sat and pulled feathers by the fistful, tossing them into a steel bin. The feathers used to keep them warm. Eventually, when most of the feathers were gone, a few remained, and we were anal about it, picking every single feather out. Once the outside was finished, we sliced open the bottom of the bird, so the inside of its body became just a cavity to tend to. We found a special part of the gut that, if you grabbed it in just the right place, everything that was inside slid out perfectly intact, and I wondered if there is special part inside me like that, too. We saved the heart and the liver, since we wanted to eat those things, and threw the rest away. This was pretty much the end of the end of its life, at least before we ate it. But the moment that really mattered was the first moment, when we wielded the scis- sors and positioned the neck between the two blades and as they came together again we wondered at how much easier it was than you’d think it would be. The dog

By Tess Elliott

The man came for coffee and left with the dog, the barista’s dog. Her landlord said she could not keep it. Its body jiggled as she dragged it out of its cage and off its pink tapestry bed. She pulled it into the folds of the scarves that hid her chest and started a round of goodbyes, first with grins but then with tears leaking onto her neck.

She brought it to me first. I eyed the man, whose story I could not believe: He said he had kids and another dog and a big yard. He was slickly dressed. How could we know that he would be kind. How could he be as gentle as she, the girl who found the puppy and brought it home.

But the home was not her home, just a place where she stayed. I wonder now whether the dog has a home and whether it’s a good home, where it is never blamed for the human problems that unfold when open spaces turn into houses and houses into places where no one wants to live. 8 N O R T H C O A S T E R | Spring and Summer 2017
