Then too, Daane has specifically dealt with this general structure so far as he found it expressed in Common Grace. It would be quite impossible to deal with his criticism otherwise than by stating what I myself consider the structure of my thought to have been, and to be. Now the basic structure of my thought is very simple. I have never been called upon to work out any form of systematic theol- ogy. My business is to teach apologetics. I therefore presuppose the Reformed system of doctrine.1 I try to show my students that it is this system of doctrine that men need. Since most students have not had much systematic theology when they first come to my classes, I give them a brief survey of it. Then as they take courses in 1. Van Til never saw himself as doing anything other than applying the Reformed system of doctrine to the specific concerns of apologetics. Because of this methodology, what Van Til was advocating was both old and new. 1 THE SPIRIT AND THE BRIDE SAY ‘COME’: APOLOGETICS AND THE WITNESS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT Kevin Kinghorn and Jerry L. Walls In a word, Christian apologetics is a defense of Christian theism. The Greek word apologia may refer to the kind of reasoned case a lawyer provides in defending the innocence of an accused person. Or, more broadly, the word may refer to any line of argument showing the truth of some position. 1 Peter 3:15 contains the instruction to Christians: “Always be prepared to give an answer [apologia] to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.”1 1. Testimony: human and divine Within the four Gospels one finds a heavy emphasis on human testimony in helping others come to beliefs about Christ. For example, St. Luke opens his Gospel by explaining to its recipient, Theophilus, that he is writing “an orderly account” of the life of Jesus “so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.” Luke describes himself as drawing together a written account of things “just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the Word.”2 As Richard Swinburne remarks, “it is hard to read the Gospels, Acts of the Apostles, and 1 Corinthians without seeing them as claiming that various historical events (above all, the Resurrection) occurred and that others can know these things on the testimony of the apostles to have seen them.”3 This passing down of apostolic testimony continued through the next generations of the early Christian Church. -

DODSON SPRING 2017 Introduction Biblical authors often employ literary techniques to communicate their messages with enhanced force. They were not, for example, interested in theology or historiography alone, but also in aesthetics.1 In other words, their focus was not directed solely on simply presenting information, but also on how the material was presented literarily. Authors would utilize many techniques in their writing such as repetition, chiasms, and typology to connect stories, to emphasize themes, and to flesh out nuanced truths. This paper will argue that Luke, in the Book of Acts, implements the aesthetic technique of allusion and typology to enrich his narrative. More specifically, this paper will seek to demonstrate Luke’s portrayal of Paul as the anti-Jonah in Acts. -

Dr Niki Francis The French artist Louise Bourgeois, who died in 2010, often worked with fabric. She said this: I've always had a fascination with the needle, the magic power of the needle. The needle is used to repair the damage.1 I have reflected on this during the week, keeping in mind the damage and pain Covid-19 is causing in the world, as well as other painful experiences that damage us emotionally and psychologically. We have all experienced some form or forms of damage and pain in our lives. We all respond in our own ways. Damage and pain also occurs on a systemic level. We can never know the full or even partial truths of what others have experienced, what hurts they carry. And that is a reason to be kind. Surely. Back to the power of the sewing needle. My reflections led me to the story of Dorcas that Gavin just read for us. Scholars generally accept that the author of Luke’s gospel also wrote Acts. Luke translated Dorcas’s Aramaic name into the Greek Tabitha to reach his Greek audience. In some translations she is called Dorcas, in others Tabitha. I will call her Dorcas because that is her original name. Plus, for me the name Tabitha is tainted by memories of the 1960s US sitcom ‘Bewitched’ in which the young woman Tabitha is a witch who makes magic by wiggling her nose! Dorcas lived in Joppa, which is now the suburb Jaffa in Tel Aviv, Israel. -

And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.” All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” But others sneered and said, “They are filled with new wine.” Reflection: What does it mean exactly to be filled with the Holy Spirit? Unit 31, Session 2 Unit 31, Session 2 The Church Is Sent to Encourage New Believers SESSION IN A SENTENCE: God has formed the church as a community of believers who nurture and care for one another. BACKGROUND PASSAGE: Acts 11:19-30 In 2007, California pastor Dan Kimball published a book titled They Like Jesus but Not the Church: Insights from Emerging Generations. The book is a compilation of coffee shop interviews with older teens and twenty-somethings. The gist of the book is that many young people like Jesus, but they have strongly critical views of the church. The church, to them, is political, judgmental, oppressive, homophobic, arrogant, and full of fundamentalists. The irony is that these same young people long for authentic relationships, a place where they can be vulnerable and ask their questions, a place to belong, that is, to experience true community. Why is that ironic? Because that is what the church of Jesus Christ is meant to be—a community of baptized believers who share a common life together, encouraging one another and helping each other look more and more like Jesus.
