Borresen: At Uranienborg Cage: Atlas Eclipticalis Glass: Orion Connections between astronomy and music have been proposed since the time of the ancient Greeks. This annotated listing of both classical and popular music inspired by astronomy restricts itself to music that has connections to real science -- not just an astronomical term or two in the title or lyrics. For example, we do not list Gustav Holst’s popular symphonic suite The Planets, because it draws its inspiration from the astrological, and not astronomical, characteristics of the worlds in the solar system. Similarly, songs like Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun” or the Beatles’ “Across the Universe” just don’t contain enough serious astronomy to make it into our guide. When possible, we give links to a CD and a YouTube recording or explanation for each piece. The music is arranged in categories by astronomical topic, from asteroids to Venus. 1 ORPHANS p there, the atmosphere was thin. They lived in a bubble, pro- U tected from the rigors of the world but also trapped inside a pressurized container that amplifi ed every thought, every action, every sound. The odds of ever reaching that rarefi ed position had been stacked heavily against them. But somehow they made it, catapulted to the stars in a junk bucket powered by hubris and jury-rigged for success. The junk bucketCOPYRIGHTED transformed into a juggernaut MATERIAL that hurtled around the globe two, three, four times over. Inside, an umbilical cord con- nected all three occupants, sustaining them while constraining all movement. As time went on, they yearned for individual freedom. They struggled, pushed and pulled against one another until, eventu- ally, the cord snapped. The juggernaut ran out of fuel and ground to a halt. And there it remained for twenty-fi ve years, like a rusted satellite 1 cc01.indd01.indd 1 88/25/09/25/09 33:01:12:01:12 PPMM 2 WALKING ON THE MOON fl oating in space; always visible but in perpetual stasis, evidence of a distant memory. A monument to the time when the Police were the biggest band in the world. Pop music is a dream. The promise of a perfect moment deferred. • ANDY SUMMERS Pro-Chancellor, Andy Summers Has Achieved An
ANDY SUMMERS Pro-Chancellor, Andy Summers has achieved an international reputation as a musician, songwriter and producer, in the genres of rock, pop and jazz. A rock and jazz guitarist of wide experience and versatility, he co-founded The Police and enjoyed huge worldwide success with the band in the 1980s, and again in its recent reunion tour. He is also a published author and photographer. Andy Summers was born in Lancashire but grew up in the Bournemouth area. He was a self-taught guitarist (though later he studied classical guitar at California State University, Northridge) and he played in a variety of bands and styles in local clubs and hotels in the later 1950s. This early experience gave him a versatility and resourcefulness which have marked his whole career and which enabled him, even in his earlier years, to play and record with a very diverse range of well-known bands and solo artists including Zoot Money’s Big Roll Band, the Animals and the Soft Machine. His innovative guitar style has made dynamic use of electronic effects and synthesiser technology. In the 1980s and later his music has increasingly reflected his love of modern jazz. However, Andy Summers’ period of greatest popular success began in 1977 when he joined with Gordon Sumner (better known as Sting) and Stewart Copeland to found The Police. With their distinctive and innovative blend of rock, jazz and reggae styles, The Police became one of the most successful bands of all time, with world-wide chart-topping hits such as Every Breath You Take, Message in a Bottle and Walking on the Moon, not to mention 80 million album sales.

On March 4, the band’s complete original catalog--five studio albums and one live album--will be re-released en masse by A&M/UME on both remastered CD Audio (in digipaks) and, for the first time, SACD (Super Audio CD) Stereo (in a super jewel case). Also on the same March 4 release date, the band’s greatest hits collection Every Breath You Take – The Classics will be reissued for the first time in SACD Hybrid (in a digipak). In addition, a previously issued VHS homevideo will make its debut on DVD on March 18. Each of the albums has been newly digitally remastered. SACD Stereo requires a SACD player; CD Audio can be played on CD players; SACD Hybrid can be played on either. --The Police of singer-bassist Sting, guitarist Andy Summers and drummer Stewart Copeland debuted on an A&M album in 1978. “Roxanne” from Outlandos d’Amour reached the Top 40 and the album, with fan favorites “So Lonely,” “Hole In My Life” and “Can’t Stand Losing You,” cracked the U.S. Top 30 (Top 10 U.K.). --Preceded by the #1 U.K. “Message In A Bottle” the next year, Reggatta de Blanc also went #1 there. In America, the album, which also included “Walking On The Moon,” was again Top 30 as the title track won a Grammy.

  • Reggatta De Blanc” Analyzing Style in the Music of the Police Mark Spicer
six % “Reggatta de Blanc” Analyzing Style in the Music of the Police mark spicer the issue of style in popular music analysis remains a thorny one. For some artists, it might seem that identifying their style is quite straightforward (Nirvana was the consummate “grunge” band, for example), yet for many artists (the Beatles being probably the most ob- vious example) it is impossible to categorize them within the boundaries of one particular style; indeed, stylistic eclecticism becomes the de‹ning feature of their music. My intent in this chapter is to confront this very issue of stylistic eclec- ticism by focusing on a body of work that offers a particularly interesting case study in this regard, namely, the music of the Police. This ground- breaking trio—consisting of drummer Stewart Copeland, bassist, lead vocalist, and main composer Sting (born Gordon Sumner), and guitarist Andy Summers—was formed in London in 1977, an especially turbulent year in the history of British pop. On the one hand, punk, led by bands such as the Sex Pistols and the Clash, was at the height of its popularity; on the other hand, disco, imported mainly from the United States and fueled by the massive transatlantic success of the movie Saturday Night Fever and its accompanying soundtrack album, was all the rage for those (slightly older) young adults who did not relish the idea of dyeing and spiking their hair or piercing their cheeks with safety pins.1 Table 6.1 shows a chronology of the ‹ve studio albums released by the Police over the course of their relatively brief career together, from their 1978 debut Outlandos d’Amour through their 1983 swan song Syn- 124 “Reggatta de Blanc” 125 TABLE 6.1.
