Developed in the 1920’s by Ernest Burgess and Robert Park, University of Chicago . Hypothesis of this theory is that cities grow and develop outwardly in concentric zones. Sought to explain the socioeconomic divides in and out of the city . Model was based on Chicago’s city layout . First theory to explain the distribution of social groups CONCENTRIC ZONE THEORY….? • Social structures extend outward from one central business area. • Population density decreases towards outward zones • Shows correlation between socioeconomic status and the distance from the central business district • Also known as the Burgess Model, the Bull’s Eye Model, the Concentric Ring Model, or the Concentric Circles Model. Concentric Zone Model ZONE 1: CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT(CBD) • Non-residential center for business. • “Downtown” area • Emphasis on business and commerce • Commuted to by residents of other zones Commercial centre . First, the inner most ring zone or nucleolus of the city is a commercial centre also called Central Business District (CBD) in North America and western countries. This zone is characterized by high intensity of commercial, social and civic amenities. It is the heart of the city which includes department stores, office buildings, shops, banks, clubs, hotels, theatres and many other civic buildings. Being the centre of commercial activities and location, it is accessible from all directions and attracts a large number of people. -

How our interactions with others affect our sense of self. 2. The importance of symbols/language to society. 3. Where our mind and humanness comes from. Title: The Missing Sociological Imagination: Sociological Functionalist Theory That Shapes the Filipino Social Consciousness in the Philippines Author: Prof. Kathy Westman, Waubonsee Community College, Sugar Grove, IL Summary: This lesson explores the links on the development of sociology in the Philippines and the sociological consciousness in the country. The assumption is that limited growth of sociological theory is due to the parallel limited growth of social modernity in the Philippines. Therefore, the study of sociology in the Philippines takes on a functionalist orientation limiting development of sociological consciousness on social inequalities. Sociology has not fully emerged from a modernity tool in transforming Philippine society to a conceptual tool that unites Filipino social consciousness on equality. Objectives: 1. Study history of sociology in the Philippines. 2. Assess the application of sociology in context to the Philippine social consciousness. 3. Explore ways in which function over conflict contributes to maintenance of Filipino social order. 4. Apply and analyze the links between the current state of Philippine sociology and the threats on thought and freedoms. 5. Create how sociology in the Philippines can benefit collective social consciousness and of change toward social movements of equality. Content: Social settings shape human consciousness and realities. Sociology developed in western society in which the constructions of thought were unable to explain the late nineteenth century systemic and human conditions. Sociology evolved out of the need for production of thought as a natural product of the social consciousness. Sociology came to the Philippines in a non-organic way. Instead, sociology and the social sciences were brought to the country with the post Spanish American War colonization by the United States. -

What is sociology ? Sociology is the scientifi c study of human behavior, social groups, and society. Sociology is concerned with every aspect of the self in relationships with others and every aspect of the social world that affects a person’s thoughts or actions. As stated by the American Sociological Association in a booklet titled 21st Century Careers with an Undergraduate Degree in Sociology (2009), sociology is the study of social life and the social causes and consequences of human behavior. The term social life encom- passes all interpersonal relationships, all groups or collections of persons, and all types of Sociology social organizations. Mapping the Young Metropolis: The Chicago School of Sociology 1915-1940 Between 1915 and 1940, a small faculty in the University of Chicago Department of Sociology, working with dozens of talented graduate students, intensively studied the city of Chicago . They aspired to use the approaches of social science in developing a new field of research, and they took the city as their laboratory. Chicago was the ideal place for such an effort: in the last half of the nineteenth century it had grown from a population of 30,000 in 1850, to 1,700,000 in 1900, probably faster than any city in history. More than one-third of the population had been born abroad, in Germany, Poland, Ireland, Italy, and dozens of other countries. It had a panoply of social problems, such as prostitution, drunkenness, hoboes, and boys' gangs. The Department of Sociology faculty sent students out into Chicago's "real world" to collect information. They employed all sorts of research methods—they refined existing ones, such as censuses, surveys and mapping, and they invented new ones, such as the personal life history. They described and analyzed what they had seen. The Chicago sociology faculty wrote books, such as The Polish Peasant in Europe and America. Graduate students in sociology wrote dissertations, many of which became books published by the University of Chicago Press. Notable among them are The Ghetto, The Hobo, The Gang, and The Gold Coast and the Slum. Many of the books became sociological classics. Prior to this work, sociology was for the most part a combination of history and philosophy, an armchair discipline. -

Theory and Methods “A” Level Sociology A Resource-Based Learning Approach Theory and Methods Unit M5: Interactionism Unit M5: Interactionism Theory and Methods Interactionism Introduction The main purpose of these Notes is to provide a basic overview of different sociological perspectives. Each set of notes is organised around three basic themes: 1. A brief overview of the perspective. 2. An outline of the “basic principles” on which each perspective is based. 3. A brief evaluation of the perspective. These Notes are, therefore, intended to serve as a general introduction to different perspectives, although they may also be used as revision notes. Interactionist Perspectives: (Social Action Theory) The Interactionist perspective is a generic (or "family") name that is normally given to a group of sociological perspectives that consists of three variations, namely: • Phenomenology. • Symbolic Interaction. • Ethnomethodology. Not all textbooks refer to this group of theoretical ideas as Interactionism - some refer to them as phenomenological theories or Social Action theories – but for A- level examination purposes none of the major exam boards expect students to have detailed knowledge of each “sub-perspective”; the most they require is a general knowledge and understanding of “Interactionist-type Sociology”. Whatever the specific terminology it is evident that the above perspectives refer to a specific way of looking at and explaining the social world - one that is quite different to both Functionalist and Conflict perspectives. In general, Interactionist perspectives tend to concentrate upon relatively small- scale levels of social interaction (between individuals, small social groups and so forth) and, for this reason, they are sometimes referred-to as a micro level of sociological analysis. -

David Naugle Philosophy 5329/501 Hermeneutics Spring 1993 University of Texas at Arlington Dr. Charles Nussbaum WILHELM DILTHEY'S DOCTRINE OF WORLD VIEWS AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO HERMENEUTICS INTRODUCTION Wilhelm Dilthey (1833-1911), whom José Ortega y Gasset called "the most im- portant philosopher in the second half of the nineteenth century"1 (1946: 131), was a man of passion, vision, and calling. The great crises of his age gripped his soul and propelled him on an intellectual and spiritual journey in quest of solutions to the prob- lems of Western culture at his moment in history. Here is his own personal testimony to the single-minded objective of his life. The great crisis of the sciences and European culture which we are now living through has so deeply and totally taken possession of my spirit that the desire to be of some help in it has extinguished every extraneous and personal ambition (JD vii; in Ermath 1978: 15). This crisis of modernity, of mammoth proportions to Dilthey who described it as "a shaking of human society and its foundations such as has not been seen since the declining days of the Greco-Roman world" (GS 6: 246), could be called a Streit der Weltanschauung—a clash, or "protracted crisis of consciousness or 'world view'" (Ermath 1978: 15).
