The only true Nirmala Vidyā –‘Pure Knowledge’ is in the silence and bliss experienced through Complete Surrender at the Feet of the Mother of the Universe, incarnated as Her Supreme Holiness Shri Mataji. In this ‘Nirmala’ state we go beyond any of the mental dross associated with having a physical or even a subtle body. Shri Mataji asked that we amend Her grammar if faulty – it is not so respectful to reproduce in print incorrect grammar produced while speaking spontaneously. 2. Quotes may have been shortened to be more appropriate for print. Again while speaking extemporaneously more words are used and constructions may change during a sentence. 4 Preface Her Supreme Holiness Shri Mataji has explained that the three letters making up Om - A, U and M - correspond with Shri Mahākālī, Mahāsaraswatī and Mahālakshmī; however in the Upanishads and Purānas they are said to be Shri Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva respectively. Other sources give A as Śhrī Vishnu, or Śhrī Shiva. There appeared to be some confusion here, so a search for clarification ensued. The puzzle was compounded by the fact that, in the Three Great Mantras, we say 1‘Mahālakshmī, Mahāsaraswatī, Mahākālī...’ The Upanishads and 2Purānas also explain that A-U-M are the Three Worlds; A is Bhūr Loka –‘Earth World’, U is Bhuvaḥ Loka –‘Atmospheric World’ and M is Swar Loka – ‘Heavenly World’. More information from Shri Mataji’s talks and other scriptures kept appearing that tied into this idea and this booklet emerged as an attempt to present those findings in a structured way. Shri Mataji refers to there being Three Worlds on many occasions, often as if the concept was so fundamental that it did not need explaining! To people with an Indian cultural background it may be so, and it is hoped that, for the rest of us, this booklet will help to fill in any gaps in our cultural foundations. Chris Marlow, Kerala, 08-16 1 In India the story is told that in the early days of Sahaja Yoga, in the 1970’s, a seminar was being organised and a booklet printed of mantras and praises, including the Three Great Mantras. When Shri Mataji saw the booklet She commented ‘It should be Mahākālī, Mahāsaraswatī, Mahālakshmī, you should change it’, but when it was explained that the booklet had already been printed, She said ‘OK, keep it that way’ and it has been like that ever since! 2 See Mandukya Upanishad p.34 and Markandeya Purana extract p.37 5 The Three Worlds The ‘Three Worlds’ appear in Sanskrit literature from the earliest times. The Gayatri Mantra from the Ṛig Veda – at ten thousand years old, probably the most ancient spiritual practice still in widespread use – includes the phrase ‘Om 1Bhūr Bhuvah 2Swaḥ‘; Om is the Primordial Reverberation giving rise to the Creation, which manifests in three forms – Bhūr- ‘Earth’, Bhuvaḥ- ‘Atmosphere’ and Swar- ‘Heaven’. These are known as the Three Worlds or Three Lokas –‘Wide space, World, Universe’. [from lok –‘to perceive, know’] The Three Worlds continue to be mentioned throughout Indian literature. In the Devi Mahatmyam the Goddess is described as ‘Trailokya trāṇa sahite’ -‘Saviour of the Three Worlds’, in the Mahābhārata Shri Vishnu is called Tri-lok‛eśha -‘Lord of the Three Worlds’, the outer square of the Shri Chakra is called Trai-lokya Mohana –‘Deluding the Three Worlds’, in his poem ‘Ai Giri Nandini’ Shri Ādi Shankarāchārya describes the Goddess as Tri-bhuvana Poshinī – ‘Protector of the Three Worlds’ – the list goes on and on. ‘Knowing that the world was lying in pure water, the Bhagavān- ‘Shri Vishnu, Supreme Being’ cut the egg open. From it the Omkāra- ‘The Sacred Syllable’ emanated. The first sound (A) of it was ‘Bhūh’ – ‘Earth’, the second sound (U) ‘Bhuvah’ -‘Atmosphere’ and the third sound (M) ‘Swah’ -‘Heaven’. So they came to be known as ‘Bhūr Bhuvah Swah’. Then the glorious radiance of the Sun was born from it and Brahmā, the grandfather of the worlds, originated in the centre of the egg.’ Shri Vāmana Purāna 1 Bhūḥ Bhuvaḥ Swaḥ are called the Three Vyāhṛitis- ‘Mystical Utterances’ recited daily by the ‘twice-born’ (Brahmins, Kshatriyas and Vaishyas) before the Gāyatrī Mantra while lighting the sacred fire. 2 Swar is also spelled Suvar in the Yajur Veda [from Swar- ‘to shine’] 6 But what do these Three Worlds mean to us on the level of everyday reality? Educating the community about these drives is important to growth of the Hindu community and of the future generations. The importance of these drives is presented in the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita and in everyday values we teach our children. In the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna discusses the importance of the three yogas—karma yoga, bhakti yoga, and jnana yoga—and how they will help us attain moksha. Karma yoga, best described, is the idea of “inaction in action and action in action.” Karma yoga requests us to take action without any attachment to results. Bhakti yoga is a path of worship which comprises of remembering God at all times, regardless of what action is being performed. Jnana yoga is the path to wisdom that comprises of accepting the idea that the Brahman is the ultimate reality. These yogas are the fundamental pillars on which Hinduism rests as they provide a firm foundation to base our lives upon. They teach us to do well to others without ulterior motives, remember the Lord that gave us the opportunity to prove ourselves in this world, and remember that one should not live life with materialistic intentions. This concern highlights the need for a personalized approach in the meditation practice adjusted for a concrete individual. This can be done by using an objective screening procedure that detects the weak and strong cognitive skills in brain function, thus helping design a tailored meditation training protocol. Quantitative electroencephalogram (qEEG) is a suitable tool that allows identification of individual neurophysiological types. Using qEEG screening can aid developing a meditation training program that maximizes results and minimizes risk of potential negative effects. But Gita Rahasya against it significantly states that Bhakti-yoga is not an independent path or means to attain salvation. INTRODUCTION Lokamanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak’s (1856-1920) wrote the Gita Rahasya as the interpretation of the Gita in the Mandalay Jail in March, 1911.     Dhyana in Hinduism Dhyana (IAST: Dhyāna) in Hinduism means contemplation and meditation.[1] Dhyana is taken up in Yoga exercises, and is a means to samadhi and self- knowledge.[2] The various concepts of dhyana and its practice originated in the Vedic era of Hinduism, and the practice has been influential within the diverse traditions of Hinduism.[3][4] It is, in Hinduism, a part of a self-directed awareness and unifying Yoga process by which the yogi realizes Self (Atman, soul), one's relationship with other living beings, and Ultimate Reality.[3][5][6] Dhyana is also found in other Indian religions such as Buddhism and Jainism. These developed along with dhyana in Hinduism, partly independently, partly influencing each other.[1] The term Dhyana appears in Aranyaka and Brahmana layers of the Vedas but with unclear meaning, while in the early Upanishads it appears in the sense of "contemplation, meditation" and an important part of self-knowledge process.[3][7] It is described in numerous Upanishads of Hinduism,[8] and in Patanjali's Yogasutras - a key text of the Yoga school of Hindu philosophy.[9][10] A statue of a meditating man (Jammu and Kashmir, India).     Vedic Sciences Sam Geppi 1 Synthesizing Vedic Principles To tackle and synthesize the multitude of Vedic texts across many disciplines in one class is rather daunting. But I'm going to try to show a brief history of the Vedic culture and how it evolved into many different branches of what we now call the Vedic Sciences. Essentially the earliest Vedic writings were more Scriptural-based and come from and incredibly early time when things were not written down for the sake of scholarship, but more for the sake of remembrance. Meaning, the earliest Vedic people did just fine relating information orally. During the Satya Yuga it was not necessary to write things down. Our mind was vibrating at a higher frequency. However, these wise people knew that we would be slipping into a darker era and so that future generations would not forget how to perform these important rituals, they began to write them down. The oldest Vedic scriptures are mainly rituals – ways to awaken the God force here on earth. It is difficult to approach these texts with the modern mind because nothing is persuasive or explanatory. In general, these are manuals – textbooks from ancient magicians who understood the deepest mysteries of life and how the subtle energies of the universe are creating beings and experiences. Within this larger context more formal sciences evolved later on as it became necessary to actually provide methods and background and specific techniques for different areas of life. The earliest of the Vedic sciences had more to do with Vaastu (sacred architecture and direction) and astrology (reading the heavens and doing things at auspicious times).

Hún byggist á kenningarlegri rannsókn á möguleikum þess að þróa meðvitundina með iðkun nútímajóga, einkum í tengslum við sálfræðikenningar Jung. Nútímajóga, ásamt sálfræði Carl Gustav Jung (1875-1961) virðast eiga það sammerkt að líta svo á að þróun mannsins felist í að uppfæra (e. upgrading) mannlega meðvitund (e. consciousness) í flóknara form sem felur í sér annars konar vitund. Byggt er á því að þróun slíkrar heilstæðrar meðvitundar geri mannkyninu betur kleift að aðlaga sig að raunveruleikanum og skapa sér heilbrigðan og heilsteyptan lífsstíl. Sem viðbót og stuðning við fræðilegu nálgunina gerði ég eigindlega rannsókn í því skyni að kanna beina reynslu af jógaiðkun í Reykjavík nútímans. Ég nota rannsóknina til þess að bera saman upplifun þátttakenda við fræðilegar kenningar um efnið. 1 Abstract The present paper is my master thesis for an MA degree in Religious Studies at the University of Iceland. It is based on a theoretical exploration about the possible evolution of consciousness through the practice of modern yoga with the support of Jungian psychology. Modern yoga, along with the depth psychology of Carl Gustav Jung (1875-1961) seem to agree that human evolution might consists in upgrading the human consciousness into a more complex model of operation and functionality, that somehow transcends and integrates multiple forms of awareness (including rationality).

    The Ascent Author's Note The Spirit keeps beckoning to write-the words keep flowing from the Mother. She is Her Holiness Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi who has brought to the Aquarian Age a unique method of realizing Truth called Sahaja Yoga. There comes a moment in the life of every seeker when he stands apart from his ego and questions himself, when he glimpses past his conditioning to embark on the journey in quest of the Spirit. The realization of Truth and the manifestation of the Spirit is the message of Sahaja Yoga. It takes us into the hidden realms of our grass roots and reveals their subtle condition and vital function. Where for the first time we are able to observe the wondrous process of their growth and the subtle constituents of the soil that contributes to the moulding of the individual psyche through various combinations and permutations. We identify the Nutrients that determine the behavior patterns and scan the process by which they reflect in the individual psyche. The potential of attaining self-realization is our innate quality, but for its manifestation there has to be seeking and guidance. When the desire of the seeker manifests, then the Mother shows the simple way through the all-pervading Divine love of the living process. The deeper meaning of life is too simple to be mentally conceptualized. Through the intellect we can only analyze or create concepts. But we cannot create anything living. The living work is done by nature. Deep in the recess of our being resides a Golden Goddess.
