ABSTRACT The aim of the thesis is to provide a tradition-specific ‘Pentecostal rationality.’ To do this it will first analyse and evaluate some of the main contemporary Pentecostal rationalities and epistemologies (chapter 1), before proposing that Alasdair MacIntyre’s tradition-focused and historically-minded narrative approach is conducive in providing a more tradition-constituted Pentecostal rationality (chapter 2). Utilising the methodological insight of MacIntyre, the thesis will then provide a philosophically informed historical narrative of a Pentecostal tradition, namely, the Elim Pentecostal Church, by exploring its underlying context and roots as a classical British Pentecostal movement (chapter 3), its emergence as a religious tradition (chapter 4), and its two major ‘epistemological crises’ (chapters 5 & 6). Based on this historical narration, the thesis will argue that Elim’s tacit Pentecostal rationality is best defined as Pentecostal Biblical Pragmatism in a Foursquare Gospel framework. This form of rationality will then be developed vis-à-vis Elim’s Pentecostal concept of truth (chapter 7), biblical hermeneutics (chapter 8), and pragmatic epistemic justification in dialogue with William Alston (chapter 9). Its leaders include many of the most popular television evangelists. Its adherents compose a large percentage of charismatic evangelical Christians.     THE CHARISMATIC MOVEMENT AND LUTHERAN THEOLOGY Pre/ace One of the significant developments in American church life during the past decade has been the rapid spread of the neo-Pentecostal or charis­ matic movement within the mainline churches. In the early sixties, experi­ ences and practices usually associated only with Pentecostal denominations began co appear with increasing frequency also in such churches as the Roman Catholic, Episcopalian, and Lutheran. By the mid-nineteen-sixties, it was apparent that this movement had also spread co some pascors and congregations of The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod. In cerrain areas of the Synod, tensions and even divisions had arisen over such neo-Pente­ costal practices as speaking in tongues, miraculous healings, prophecy, and the claimed possession of a special "baptism in the Holy Spirit." At the request of the president of the Synod, the Commission on Theology and Church Relations in 1968 began a study of the charismatic movement with special reference co the baptism in the Holy Spirit. The 1969 synodical convention specifically directed the commission co "make a comprehensive study of the charismatic movement with special emphasis on its exegetical aspects and theological implications." Ie was further suggested that "the Commission on Theology and Church Relations be encouraged co involve in its study brethren who claim to have received the baptism of the Spirit and related gifts." (Resolution 2-23, 1969 Pro­ ceedings. p. 90) Since that time, the commission has sought in every practical way co acquaint itself with the theology of the charismatic movement. The com­ mission has proceeded on the supposition that Lutherans involved in the charismatic movement do not share all the views of neo-Pentecostalism in general.

    Samuel Miller’s Pastoral Theology Posted on April 8, 2015 by Andrew Webb My own first contact with Samuel Miller, Old Princeton’s Professor of Ecclesiastical History and Church Government, came many years ago when I read an essay that had a quote from his “Presbyterianism The Truly Primitive and Apostolical Constitution of the Church of Jesus Christ.” The quote was just a paragraph or two from one of the chapters on worship, entitled bluntly “Presbyterians do not observe Holy Days.” After reading it, I remember being convinced of his position and thinking, I MUST find the rest of this! Eventually, I found a copy of the book from 1840 in the library at Westminster Theological Seminary; and I have to admit, I probably damaged the spine in the process of photocopying the entire work. It was that book, more than anything else I’d read to date, that convinced me of the truth of Old School Presbyterianism. It brought together church history with biblical exposition and a fervent piety, in a way that few men other than Miller have ever been able to. Those who are familiar with the works of Samuel Miller, will probably have noticed that while his works are all very biblical, there is a pronounced bent towards the historical, and towards facts rather than speculation. As John De Witt put it, “he lived intellectually in the sphere of the concrete.” 1 While he understood Reformed theology better than most, and could defend it admirably, he was not a Systematic Theologian like Alexander or Hodge. You can’t read most of his works and even sermons without very quickly beginning to encounter references to Eusebius or Tertullian or Clement.

  • The Early Apostolics and the Trinity
    Chapter 3 The Early Apostolics and the Trinity The Tenets of the Apostolic Church begin with the Trinity (a feature which curiously sets them apart from most other evangelical and Pentecostal state- ments of faith).1 While most other evangelical and Pentecostal movements commence their doctrinal statements with reference to Scripture, the Tenets do not mention Scripture until the eighth position (between the Sacraments and Church government, and thus firmly within the context of ecclesiology). This primacy of the Trinity in the order of the Tenets was not accidental. Rath- er, the early leaders of the Apostolic Church were making clear their firm belief that the doctrine of the Trinity was the doctrine upon which all others rest and from which all others derive their meaning. Hence, unsurprisingly, some of these early leaders devoted significant reflection to the doctrine of the Trinity. 3.1 D.P. Williams and Thomas Rees: The Trinity and the Trinitarian Undergirding of All Theology In 1939 D.P. Williams wrote a two-volume work entitled The Trinity.2 The draft was intended as the first in a series exploring the Tenets of the Apostolic Church. However, due to the outbreak of war, it was never published, and when, after the war and ensuing paper shortages concluded, a series of works on the Tenets was finally published, the volumes included in the series were much less substantial. In fact, these works were not published until after the death of Williams, and thus without any contribution from his pen.
