We have been busy with the preparations for the BCA Anniversary celebration in Allentown July 27-30. I am still trying to get my 1925 “happy” for the trip. I am also involved with the Pre-War After Tour, July 31-Aug 2nd. We hope to see all the Mason-Dixon members at the celebration. At this writing our 8th annual Freysinger Show has come and gone. A report from Chuck Hoffman to be found in this Porthole. It was a cool slightly overcast day so the attendance was not what I had hoped for. Also the change of date two weeks earlier also had some members confused. With the added classes for other makes there were some very nice cars to be seen. If just all our Mason-Dixon People would bring a car we would have a memorable show! I know some of our members brought their non-Buick cars and had a great time at the show. Mike Lawson brought his white Corvette and Dick Beckley brought a 1941 Pontiac Woodie. We had a new member sign up. Michael Crookham brought his 1966 Electra from Front Royal VA. I followed him up route 81 in our 1937 on the way to the show. Welcome aboard to Michael and his wife Mari! Speaking of new members we would still like to retain our membership numbers. If you are still receiving the Porthole you are either current with dues or only behind this calendar year. We don’t want to lose you! I have been calling members who have fallen behind with dues. Some have moved from the area with no forwarding address. Others have sold their car and moved on to other interests. Of course please remember in your prayers the families of our fallen friends. Gone too soon this past year were; Hank Reus Sr., Jack Frank and Bob Newmyer. If you are friends with of any of the former members who you have not seen for a while. Give them a call. Our next meeting/picnic will be at Tom Bush’s on the 24th of July. Details elsewhere in the Porthole. I would hope we may continue this idea going forth. See you at the picnic and at Allentown. Larry PROPOSED 2016 PWD AFTERTOUR July 31- August 1-2 Hotel and Departure location to be designated DAY 1 – Depart hotel 9:30 AM for Reading. Drive will be through Kutztown, with a brief coffee stop and look around. There will be on a short section of four lane highway, but not Interstate. Depart Kutztown at 10:30 PM for drive to Reading. We will pass through Fleetwood, former site of Fleetwood Body Works of Cadillac reputation. Reading was the home of Biehl Auto Body (started as a blacksmith shop in the 1820s, and then into a custom horse carriage company), the makers of wood bodies for Woodie Buicks in 1940. The cowl and chassis were shipped to Reading from Flint and then returned for interior and exterior finish. It was also the home of Duryea for several years. Decision: To drive up the switchback on Duryea Drive (this is the drive used frequently by Charles Duryea to test his automobiles to reach the top) to Pagoda, or reach Pagoda via Skyline Drive (easier climb). Stop at Pagoda, and Fire Tower. Lunch will be arranged near Reading.

  • 1.02 1953 Through 1958
General Information on Makes & Models 1.02 1953 Through 1958 The "Nailhead" V8 is Introduced In 1953, Buick joined the V8 army with the introduction of their new V8. The engine was rather unique in that it used a radical combustion chamber borrowed from four-valve overhead cam (OHC) racing engines, but with only one side of the pent roof chamber containing valves – and those were activated by pushrods rather than overhead cams. (See discussion in the Engine Section) The chamber did allow higher combustion ratios than were feasible with other engines, and as a result the Buick mill made good horsepower when introduced, with the 322 cubic inch motor making 180 HP in the 1953 Roadmaster. With the new V8, whatever excitement had been missing was back in 1953. For the first time ever, all Buicks shared a common 1953 Buick Nailhead intro brochure wheelbase. Also to celebrate Buick's 50th anniversary, the Division released an "Anniversary Convertible", known as the "Skylark", available for a cool $5,000, which would be about $150,000 in today's money. As such, only 1,690 were sold. But because of their cost and cache, today many still survive and are in great demand by collectors. Refinement and Power Drive Huge Sales Increases Buick chassis engineering, which could have only been described as "ponderous", began to catch up with the new V-8 in 1954. The new cars were lower and wider, with greatly improved handling. And for the first time, even the Special had V-8 power. The Anniversary Convertible returned as just the Skylark, though it sold in even lesser numbers Regardless, '54 was a smashing sales success.

  • July 2012 DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE Paul Marchi
Volume 41 Number 7 July 2012 DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE Paul Marchi Greetings and Salutations! The weather has warmed up (alot as of late), the sun is shinning, and if the last meet- ing is any indication, the Buicks are back on the road again where they belong! The meeting last month was at the Manner's and was very well done, anyone who wants to know how a garage should be set-up should check out Denny's east stall, what an impressive layout for working on a car. That was also the largest meeting with almost 70 people and a large number of guests. If you didn't make it you definitely missed out on a great time of fel- lowship. They have released the hotel info for the National next year in South Bend and we will be talking about that more at the next meeting. There will be reports coming out about that as Roberta did make it down and can give us the inside scoop on what is going on and what secrets we might want to know (like apparently the guys on the east coast are afraid to drive their Buicks and trailer them every where). There are alot of events coming up in the next couple months, not the least is Back to the Bricks. So please check the calendar and keep appraised as we would like a great club participation at these events. Other than that "Drive it like you stole it!" and lets keep it be- tween the lines out there 2012 Officers & Chairpersons Director Historian PAUL MARCHI [email protected] To be determined / looking for volunteers 810-610-1207 Sloan Auto Fair Representatives JOHN DAILY [email protected] Assistant Director 810-658-0126
