She then interprets the retrieval of African cultural retensions through the lens of popular religion. In her final section she identifies the Black Catholic subject of Tradition.] O SPEAK ABOUT TRADITION and the traditions of African American T Catholicism is not without contention.1 Almost from the beginning, indeed, even now, the faith praxis of African American Catholics has been met with arrogance and suspicion. These reactions stem chiefly from the notion that African American Christianity is restricted to, if not identical with, a certain form of Protestantism. This misconception has been ab- sorbed not only into our religious, cultural, and social commonsense, but has been formalized in scholarship, that is, in the prevailing American religious and social historiography. On the one hand, authoritative voices among Catholic historians, sociologists, and theologians treat the notion of the immigrant church as the primary interpretative paradigm for Catholic M. SHAWN COPELAND is associate professor of theology at Marquete University, Milwaukee. She obtained her Ph.D. in systematic theology at Boston College. Her areas of specialization include theological and philosophical anthropology, political theology, and theological method. Among her recent publications are “Body, Rep- resentation, and Black Religious Discourse,” in Postcolonialism, Feminism, and Religious Discourse (Routledge, 2000), and a study on Letty Russell in Liberating Eschatology, ed. Margaret Farley and Serene Jones (Westminster/Knox, 1999). -

Record Group I.06.01 John Joseph Williams Papers, 1852-1907 Introduction & Index Archives, Archdiocese of Boston Introduction Biographical Sketch Scope and Content Content List (A-Z) Subject Index Introduction The John Joseph Williams papers held by the Archives of the Archdiocese of Boston span the years 1852-1907. The collection consists of original letters and documents from the year that Williams was assigned to what was to become St. Joseph’s parish in the West End of Boston until his death 55 years later. The papers number approximately 815 items and are contained in 282 folders arranged alphabetically by correspondent in five manuscript boxes. It is probable that the Williams papers were first put into some kind of order in the Archives in the 1930s when Fathers Robert h. Lord, John E. Sexton, and Edward T. Harrington were researching and writing their History of the Archdiocese of Boston, 1604-1943. At this time the original manuscripts held by the Archdiocese were placed individually in folders and arranged chronologically in file cabinets. One cabinet contained original material and another held typescripts, photostats, and other copies of documents held by other Archives that were gathered as part of the research effort. The outside of each folder noted the author and the recipient of the letter. In addition, several letters were sound in another section of the Archives. It is apparent that these letters were placed in the Archives after Lord, Sexton, and Harrington had completed their initial arrangement of manuscripts relating to the history of the Archdiocese of Boston. In preparing this collection of the original Williams material, a calendar was produced. -

THE CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF AMERICA Dignitatis humanae and the Development of Moral Doctrine: Assessing Change in Catholic Social Teaching on Religious Liberty A DISSERTATION Submitted to the Faculty of the School of Theology and Religious Studies Of The Catholic University of America In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree Doctor of Philosophy By Barrett Hamilton Turner Washington, D.C 2015 Dignitatis humanae and the Development of Moral Doctrine: Assessing Change in Catholic Social Teaching on Religious Liberty Barrett Hamilton Turner, Ph.D. Director: Joseph E. Capizzi, Ph.D. Vatican II’s Declaration on Religious Liberty, Dignitatis humanae (DH), poses the problem of development in Catholic moral and social doctrine. This problem is threefold, consisting in properly understanding the meaning of pre-conciliar magisterial teaching on religious liberty, the meaning of DH itself, and the Declaration’s implications for how social doctrine develops. A survey of recent scholarship reveals that scholars attend to the first two elements in contradictory ways, and that their accounts of doctrinal development are vague. The dissertation then proceeds to the threefold problematic. Chapter two outlines the general parameters of doctrinal development. The third chapter gives an interpretation of the pre- conciliar teaching from Pius IX to John XXIII. To better determine the meaning of DH, the fourth chapter examines the Declaration’s drafts and the official explanatory speeches (relationes) contained in Vatican II’s Acta synodalia. The fifth chapter discusses how experience may contribute to doctrinal development and proposes an explanation for how the doctrine on religious liberty changed, drawing upon the work of Jacques Maritain and Basile Valuet. -

Against emerging neo-Scholasticism, he supported the growing awareness of the need for historical context and to see theo- logical doctrines in their development over time. He was an influential theologian at the First Vatican Council. Created cardinal by Pope Pius ix in 1876, he engaged in the work of the Roman Curia, for example against the German Kulturkampf and for the Third Plenary Council of the Catholic Church in the usa (Baltimore, 1884). This article provides an overview of Franzelin’s biography and analyzes his contributions to theol- ogy and church politics. Woodstock College N A RECENT ADDRESS to a seminar of the United Nations on freedom I of information Paul VI said: As you know, the Church also is busy with a somewhat different problem but one that is not without affinity with the present object of your research. It is the problem of religious freedom. The importance and amplitude of the question are so great that it has claimed the attention of the Ecumenical Council. It is legiti mate to expect the promulgation of a text on the subject that will be of great import not only for the Church but also for all those—countless in number—who feel that an authoritative declaration on the subject is a matter of concern to them.1 Before this essay is published, the Council may have discussed the revised text submitted by the Secretariat for the Promotion of Chris tian Unity and approved it, having made appropriate revisions. Even in that case this essay may serve to illuminate the formidable difficul ties that the problem itself presents. They arise from two general sources. First, there is the variety of religio-social situations throughout the world, and the differences among political traditions and regimes, and the divergences in the historical experiences of the nations. For instance, religious freedom has been an integral part of the Cath olic experience in the United States; the institution is considered to have made a contribution to the vitality of the Church. Elsewhere, perhaps chiefly in Spain, the institution is alien; the very notion con notes a hated Liberalismo, pernicious both to the Church and to a cherished national religious unity. -

MISCELLANEOUS. "ITALY AND THE WAR."—A DISCUSSION. A LETTER FROAt A ROMAN PATRIOT. (Translated from the Italian original by Percy F. jMorley.) To the Editor of The Open Court: "It is difficult to understand why Italy entered the war." Thus begins the article which you, esteemed Doctor, published under the title "Italy and the War," in the October (1915) number of the delightful and scholarly periodical so ably edited by you. Permit me, by a substitution of terms, to tell you that I find it really difficult to understand how Dr. Carus, whose rare capacity for penetrating and explaining spiritual events separated from us by hundreds or thousands of years, has not succeeded, nor is succeeding, in diag- nosing the facts of a contemporaneous event, even though remote in space, namely, the war into which Italy has now so willingly entered. The premises upon which you confess your inability to discover the mo- tives which could have induced Italy to take up arms against Austria, are two : first, the notable sense of aversion to war, and the irreducible pacifism of the Italian spirit, which factors, according to you, render our people unfit for the rigors of warfare, and which -were responsible for our military re- verses in the wars of independence ; in the second place, the fact that our real and dangerous rivals in the Mediterranean are the French and the Eng- lish, not the Germans or the Austrians. I hope you will not take offense at a clear and frank reply. First of all you fall, involuntarily no doubt, into a serious and unjust perversion of the facts of history, resurrecting, as you do, our military reverses of "49 and '66 and completely forgetting our brilliant campaign of '59 which led directly to the proclamation of the military sovereignty of Italy.
