Long considered one of the best-kept secrets in higher ed u ca tion, the word is starting to get out about the ex cel- lence of Murray State University. Students don’t just pick Murray State - they’re drawn to it.

As one of the best public liberal arts universities, Murray State has attracted students of high academic standing. In fact, entering MSU stu- dents have the highest ACT average of all regional campuses. They are accustomed to challenges, and they are not disappointed. Murray State’s highly-respected liberal arts curriculum is built on a core of courses called University Studies. University Studies is designed to edu- cate each student broadly in the various areas of human knowledge: the arts, the humanities, the natural sciences and the social sciences. Equally important, the curriculum helps students develop communication skills vital to becoming a responsible citizen and a lifelong learner.

The Campus Since its founding in 1922, Murray State has gained a reputation for having one of the most beautiful campuses in the country. Adding to the natural scenic beauty of the campus are the many well- maintained and aesthetically-pleasing buildings. Over the years, MSU has kept its historical look despite making several additions. Currently, the university has three major building projects under way and several others on the drawing board. Most notably, the university World-Wide Recognition just completed a project which included an impressive entrance to the U.S. News & World Report magazine has recognized Murray State Uni- campus and a fence reminiscent of the ones which encircle the many versity’s continuing excellence as a top tier university for 15 consecutive thoroughbred horse farms which Kentucky is known. From the classroom to the residential college room, the Murray State experience is one which students will harbor for a lifetime. In the classroom, educators are dedicated to seeing each student reach his or her potential. Class size is about 30 to 35 students. Outside of the classroom, Murray State off ers many athletic and social programs. Intramural sports operate year-round, while fraternities and sororities allow students to form bonds with “brothers” and “sisters” which will last a lifetime. Murray State also attracts a wide array of nationally- acclaimed speakers, top concerts and other events. Perhaps the biggest event on campus each year is Homecoming. Each fall, thousands of alumni return to Murray State to renew old friendships and visit the place they called home for four years.

Racer Athletics The university’s intercollegiate athletic programs are a source of tra- dition, school pride, spirit and entertainment for students, alumni and community members alike. Competing at the highest level of college athletics, MSU is a member of NCAA Division I and is a founding member of the Ohio Valley Conference with its 16-team program. Murray State is committed to athletic excellence, which is evident by its 96 OVC championships in the 54 years that the Racers have been competing in the league. One of the greatest benefi ts of Racer athletics to Murray State is the attention and acclaim which it brings to the university. The Murray State men’s basketball team has achieved extensive notoriety by competing in the NCAA Tournament in most years. Also, the Racers fi nd themselves being written about in such publications as Sports Illustrated, ESPN The Magazine, The Sporting News, USA Today and dozens of publications and newspapers across the country. Additionally, Murray State is featured several times each year on ESPN and Net South as part of their college basketball and football broadcasts. Also, four major cities (St. Louis, Nashville, Memphis, Louisville) are within a few hours’ driving distance from Murray. One of the biggest attractions in western Kentucky is scenic Kentucky Lake and the Land Between the Lakes. Just a 15-minute drive from the Murray State campus are boating, fi shing, hunting, camping and hiking opportunities, which students often take advantage of during fall and spring weekends.

In 1974, Dr. N.B. Pavalotos donated a horse named Violet Cactus to the university. In 1976, Violet Cactus began the tradition of running a 400-meter lap around the track encircling the football fi eld after each Racer score, and did so for eight years to the tune of “The Old Gray Mare.” Violet Cactus died in May 1984 at the age of 15 and is buried in the northeast corner of the stadium, but today, Racer One (right) carries on that proud tradition. Murray State is the only Division I school to use the nickname “Racers.”

With an eye to the future, Murray State completed construction on Clark Hall, the newest residential college in 2007 (above). Building projects have been ongoing on campus for the last few years, as Murray State continues to grow and develop into one of the leading four-year liberal arts universities. Another construction project that is nearing completion is Phase II of the science complex. Phase I was completed adjacent to Alexander Hall (below), the education building was completed in 2003.

Racer student-athletes put in many hours to be the best they can be. That same com- mittment carries over to academics as Racer student-athletes are provided the necessary aca- demic facilities, resources and personal attention required to excel in the classroom. From the fi rst class to the time when they walk the stage on graduation day, MSU student-ath- letes are given every opportunity to succeed. With question, the diff erence in the Racer ath- letic program’s adademic success is the Weaver Academic Enhancement Center. Built in 1997, the Weaver Center is a state- of-the-art academic facility which has aided hundreds of Racer student-athletes in its 11 years of existence. The Weaver Center also features a spacious study lab where student-athletes can meet with tutors or study independently. Numerous student-athletes have stated the Weaver Center was a major part of their edu- cational success at MSU because of the tools it provided. The Weaver Center gives MSU student-athletes a place where they can accomplish their class- room goals.

CHAMPS Life Skills Program

The Murray State athletic department makes it a priority to prepare the student-athletes to succeed in life. To further that endeavor, MSU Athletics offi cially joined the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills Program in 2005. The goal is to prepare student-athletes for the day when they transition from their college careers to being responsible and productive members of society. The mission of the CHAMPS program is to provide opportunities for personal development. The focus of the program is on the individual as a whole - academically, athletically and emotion- ally. Murray State is one of 126 NCAA Division I institutions and confernce offi ces implementing the CHAMPS program.
