2012-13 RACERS MEN’S TENNIS 19 Tennis Facilities

The Murray State men’s and women’s tennis teams play all outdoor matches on the Bennie Purcell Tennis Courts, conveniently located on the MSU campus. With eight lighted and well-maintained hard-courts, the facility is one of the best in the Ohio Valley Conference. In the summer of 2005, the courts underwent a complete resurfacing.

The facility was named in honor of former legendary MSU men’s tennis coach Bennie Purcell, the father of current men’s head coach Mel Purcell.

The senior Purcell coached tennis at Murray State for 27 seasons, earning 11 OVC championships along the way. He was inducted into the Intercollegiate Tennis Associations’s Hall of Fame in 1998 and the Murray State Athletics Hall of Fame in 1969. Purcell came to MSU in 1948 to play basketball, where he became one of the top players in school history. His number 21 jersey is one of the only nine in the rafters of the CFSB Center. He laster served as an assistant basketball coach under Cal Luther before taking over the men’s tennis program. Purcell still resides in Murray and remains an avid supporters of Racers athletics.

The Rosemary and Harry L. Crisp II Soccer and Tennis Complex was constructed on the Murray State campus adjacent to the Purcell Tennis Center. The complex, which was completed in the Fall 2008, houses three separate locker rooms, a sports medicine area, a concession area, rest rooms, team storage, and a player’s lounge. The facility hosted its grand opening on Sept. 5, 2008.
