Roberts presented information to the leadership of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in January of 1922 that fundamentally challenged the entire premise of their religious beliefs. New research shows that in addition to church leadership, this information was also presented during the neXt few months to a select group of highly educated Mormon men and women outside of church hierarchy. This group represented many aspects of Mormon belief, different areas of eXpertise, and varying approaches to dealing with challenging information. Their stories create a beautiful tapestry of Mormon life in the transition years from polygamy, frontier life, and resistance to statehood, assimilation, and respectability. A study of the people involved illuminates an important, overlooked, underappreciated, and eXciting period of Mormon history. -

Signatures on file in the Graduate School. iii Abstract Recent studies have reconsidered the Mormon Culture Region in light of its 1880{1920 transition to American political and economic norms. While these studies emphasize conflicts between the Mormon establishment and the non-Mormon federal government, Mormon/non-Mormon relations within Utah have received little direct attention. Based on religious affiliations recorded in the 1880 federal census of Utah Territory, this study uses historical GIS to visualize the composition of Utah's \Mormon" and \non-Mormon" towns. The results highlight the extensive presence of religious minorities in Utah's settlements. Case studies of farm villages, mining camps, and urban neighborhoods probe the social and economic contexts of non-Mormon presence in Utah. These studies, based on Sanborn maps and city directories, explore the geographical mosaic of Mormon and non-Mormon residence and business activity. These variegated patterns, often absent from historical accounts of the region, enable localized analyses of the ensuing decades of cultural conflict, transformation and assimilation. Back of Beyond Books proudly releases Catalogue #19. We continue to feature books and ephemera from the American West but you’ll also find numerous pages of Americana, Travel and Photographic material along with Explora- tion, Mining and Native Americana. We’ve also picked up small collections of Poetry and Art Books which have been fun to catalogue. Perhaps my favorite genre of Catalogue #19 are the 21 Promotional items from western states and communities. These colorful pamphlets, mostly from the early 20th century, would make any Chamber of Commerce proud. It’s always interesting to see what items sell quickly in each catalogue. I of- ten guess wrong so I’ll leave the decisions up to you. Several items of note, however, include: The best association copy known of Cormac McCarthy’s Blood Meridian--inscribed to Edward Abbey, a beautifully bright advertising poster for the ‘Field Self Discharging Rake’, a scarce promotional for the Salt River Valley of Arizona, a full-plate tintype from Volcano, California, and six large format albumen photographs depicting archaeological sites of Arizona and New Mexico by John K. Hillers. I’m also taken with the striking and rare Broadside for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, the very clean re- view copy of Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring and the atlas from the Pike Expe- dition published in 1810. Thanks to my staff at the store for working around the piles and boxes of books. If you’re ever in Moab our shop is open daily; please stop in. Fact: the Sugar Beet Is
THE SUGAR INDUSTRY IN UTAH Leonard J. Arrington Utah achieved prominence in nineteenth-century America for its efforts to produce sugar from sugar beets; and the production of beet sugar contributed substantially to Utah’s economy for almost one hundred years. A first bold attempt was made in the early 1850s, when LDS leaders studied French manufacturing, formed a company, imported 500 bushels of seed, transported heavy machinery from Liverpool to New Orleans, then by riverboat to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and thence via fifty-two ox teams across the plains to the Salt Lake Valley, where it was placed in a factory at “Sugar House,” south of Salt Lake City. Though beets were raised and processed, the factory never quite managed to solve the chemical problems of converting Sewing sacks of refined U and I sugar beets grown in alkali soil into granulated sugar. circa 1935 With the further development of the beet and its manufacture, and with the increased population in the territory, a renewed attempt was made in the 1880s. Particularly active in keeping interest in the industry alive was Arthur Stayner, a horticulturist from England, who used his energies and property in experiments with sugar cane, sorghum cane, and sugar beets. In 1887 Stayner received a $5,000 bounty from the legislature for the first 7,000 pounds of marketable sugar produced in Utah. Stayner visited other early experimental sugar-producing plants, and with passionate earnestness he solicited the support of the LDS Church and business leaders in the formation of a company to finance further investigations. -

Near-Death Experiences and Early Mormon Thought
Thought Communication, Speed of Movement, and the Spirit's Ability to Absorb Knowledge: Near-Death Experiences and Early Mormon Thought Brent L. Top, Ph.D. Brigham Young University ABSTRACT- Three of Charles Flynn's (1986) "core elements" of near-death experiences (NDEs) have special interest to members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) because of their striking similarity to the doctrinal teachings of 19th-century Mormon leaders and theologians. This article illustrates these three NDE characteristics-thought communi cation, speed of movement, and the ability to "absorb" knowledge-by com paring contemporary NDE accounts with both the religious teachings of 19th-century Mormon church leaders and the accepted doctrines of modern Mormonism. Virtually all of the recent studies of near-death experiences (NDEs) have included accounts of those who have "died" discovering en hanced abilities, far beyond earthly abilities, in the areas of commu nication, travel and movement, and the acquisition of knowledge. These three different aspects of the near-death experience, included in Charles Flynn's (1986) list of "core elements" of the NDE, have special interest to Mormons. There are striking similarities between the modern descriptions by NDErs concerning thought communica tion, the speed of their movements, and their ability to absorb knowl edge, and the theological teachings of early Mormon leaders in the Brent L. Bury 1 In the second year of his reign as King of the Neo-Babylonian Empire, Nebuchadnezzar II dreamt of a large stone that rolled down the side of a mountain, shattered a great metallic statue, and grew into a mountain range large enough to cover the earth. The accomplished ruler, who went on to oversee the construction of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, as well as the destruction of Jerusalem’s Jewish temple, was no revelator, and so enlisted Daniel, an exiled Jew, to interpret his dream. According to Daniel, the statue, divided into five parts from head to toe, portrayed mankind’s present and future kingdoms. The last, represented by the statue’s iron and clay feet, would be “a divided kingdom.” Unable to unify, “the kingdom will be partly strong and partly brittle. -

Utah's Pioneer Beet Sugar Plant: THE LEHI FACTORY of the UTAH SUGAR COMPANY BY LEONARD J. ARRINGTON The Lehi factory of the Utah Sugar Company occupies a pre-emi nent place among the early sugarbeet factories of America. Commencing operations in 1891, it was the first sugarbeet factory in the Mountain West, the first to utilize beets grown by irrigation, the first to have a systematic program for the production of its own beet seed, the first to use American- made machinery, the first to use the "osmose process" of reprocessing molasses, the first to build auxiliary cutting stations, and the first to have been established as part of a great social and religious movement. This factory also served as a training base for a high proportion of the technical leaders of the sugarbeet industry of the United States. After 75 years it is well to remind ourselves of the truly pioneering character of this first suc cessful sugar enterprise in Utah. The story of the construction of the Lehi plant begins with the efforts of Arthur Stayner, a Mormon horticulturist from England, to make sugar Leonard Arrington is professor of economics at Utah State University. Elizabeth Kane, the wife of Colonel Kane after whom Utah’s Kane County is named kept a journal while in Saint George during 1872-73. (footnote 1) Elizabeth Kane’s Journal A brief excerpt from her journal should aid our understanding of pioneer irrigation. “...but passing Mrs. Lucy’s [Young] house we saw her in the garden. She begged us to come in and let the children see the process of watering it. The result was that we spent a couple of hours there. At this time of the year there is no limit to the time allowed for watering, but later when the crops start, each lot has but three hours in the twenty four assigned to it. The lots in the town are 80 x 160 but most families own two. She has three, one of which is allowed to remain uncultivated, so that she has nine hours water-time for the two lots. The time she says, occurs to each in turn and when it is in the night-time the gardener stays up to superintend it, and at the end of the time wakes the man whose garden is to have the benefit next.
