visited in succession on a journey through utah to arizona published in 1973 the st george journal records the events ofotherher stay in st george during the winter of 1872 73 unknown to the editors of twelve mormon homes the st george journal was among the thomas L kane family papers donated by kent kane elizabeth kane s grandson to the harold B lee library at brigham young university A gentile account of life in utahs dixie is the fourteenth volume in the series utah the Morcormonsmormonsmons and the west published by the tanner trust fund norman R bowen who also edited lowell thomas the stranger everyone knows was a for- mer journalism teacher at brigham young university and the university of utah a city editor of the deseret news and a correspondent for sev- eral national publications he completed most of the editing for kane s journal before his unexpected death in 1992 A short sketch of the life of elizabeth kane written by bowens daughter mary karen bowen solo- mon precedes the text of the journal elizabeth wood a native of liverpool england was born in 1836 soon after her family emigrated to new york elizabeth age sixteen mar- ried her cousin thomas leiper kane of the kane s four children the younger two evan and william accompanied their parents on their jour- ney to utah in 1872 thomas kane s admiration of brigham young and association with the cormonsmormons distressed the religious elizabeth who did not consider cormonsmormons to be christians primarily because of their em- brace of polygamy thomas kane s assistance to the cormonsmormons during their exodus from nauvoo and his intervention when johnston s army de- scended on utah in 1857 were trials for elizabeth the couple s long separa- tions including the time kane served in the civil war however led not only to her studies of literature medicine history and even mormonism but also to her lifelong journal writing thomas kane s persistent ill health exacerbated by a severe war wound led brigham young to invite the kanes to accompany him on his annual winter pilgrimage to the mild climate of southern utah in 1872 elizabeth took with her not only her two young sons and a uncommonly perceptive eye and a curious mind the resulting record of their winter stay written from letters notes and diary entries is an extraordinary account of mormon village life as well as an inadvertent revelation of the reluctant visitor herself though the text is well annotated one editorial deficiency is the absence of an introduction explaining the historical and social background of 1872 st george which would have provided a useful context for elizabeths ob- servationsservat ions another small oversight is the uncorrected reference eliza- beth makes to lucy bigelow young s mother as mrs benbow rather than mrs bigelow otherwise the editor has carefully identified the numerous persons events and places mentioned in the journal elizabethellzabetheilzabethelizabethss journal reveals an educated sensitive intelligent and ar- ticulateticulate woman while her journal is more anecdotal than chronological it covers a wide range of subjects and displays an enviable power of obser- vation and description her numerous historical and literary allusions attest to the extent of her self education strands of sardonic humor occa- sionallysionally weave their way into her colorful commentary especially about polygamists but on the whole she is respectful of her subjects and some- times admiring 1 the journal begins on december 25 1872 with the entry I1I wonder how we shall get through the days here i two months and 175 pages 1 later elizabeth confesses I1I cannot forget what rest and peace of soul I1 have enjoyed among them the Morcormonsmormonsmons 175 the intervening pages record not only the education of an inquisitive mind but also the transfor- mation of a querulous guest when the kanes arrived they found a small community of about eleven hundred people only a few more than the 130 pioneer families who arrived a decade earlier and stayed despite the sear- ing summers constant river flooringsfloodingsfloodings failed crops brackish water alka- line soil and disconcerting isolation larry M logue s A sermon in the desert belief and behavior in early st george utah asks the question why did people who took pride in their rational choices endure living in this place 12 elizabeth s journal begins to answer that question there was no hiding the region s hostility to settlement abandoned fields crumbling foundations and scrawny animals were evidence enough of the desert s destructive and unyielding soil santa clara settlers eliza- beth noted were better off than their st george neighbors she facetiously added that if she were a faithful niece of my uncle sam she would laugh at their industry until their labor proved productive and then drive the accursed cormonsmormons out to make new combs of honey in still remolerremoter deserts for us to eat in turn 89 9090 but she did not laugh the determi- nation she found among the settlers to conquer nature s deficits was too formidable a human force to be ridiculed or exploited enchanting and elizabeth kane had the words to portray its uniqueness A hike to one of the low volcanic ridges that edged the community yielded a panorama she frequently described ranges of mountains that had been entirely hidden from us down in st george by the red cliffs that wall in the val- ley 11 she wrote rose before us tier on tier behind the sugar loaf bluffs we saw the pine valley mountains robed in new fallen dazzling snow but its purity was partly overshadowed by a great snow cloud that rested on the summits of that mountain group alone its shadows darkened the slopes while the bright mountain peaks here and there pierced through its soft masses and rose into the sunny atmosphere above as if they would fain float off and become clouds themselves 15 16 no two views from her numerous hikes to the tops of the ridges and plateaus evoked the same response and literary cliches seldom found place in her vividly drawn descriptions the native americans whom she encountered on the streets of st george also claimed many pages ofotherher journal she and her boys were fascinated by their appearance their speech their customs and their culture they listened intently to the stories related by mormon indian scouts and mis- sionariessionaries she recounts in detail the trial of one accused indian and was delighted to see justice served in his acquittal granted by an allwhiteall white court balls dinners and parties while frequent seemed less absorbing to this faithful presbyterian than the weekly LDS services that she regularly men- tioned 1 I mean to remember she explained that it was right and not wrong to worship with the cormonsmormons as with christians 176 the message in the sermons the sincerity and sometimes irreverence of the speaker and especially the joyful singing of the congregation without an organ prompted her to write it is such a comfort to be with people who are in earnest 176 moreover she did not discredit the accounts of spiritual manifestations and eagerly listened to and recorded stories of conversion the beginnings ofthe church and the exodus from nauvoo she also quietly observed the charitable activities of the relief society concluding that much of it was picking up the dropped stitches of the bishops 32 33 flowing like a steady counterpoint to elizabeth s perceptive often elo- quent observations that make up this episodic journal are her disdain of polygamy and wonder at those who practiced it in a community where one third of all husbands had plural wives 1 meaning that at least two thirds of the wives were polygamous elizabeth could not avoid feeling immersed in the practice convinced that a communion of mind and heart could not exist in plural marriages she believed her happiness to be 11 a stronger She begged us to come in and let the children see the process of watering it. The result was that we spent a couple of hours there. At this time of the year there is no limit to the time allowed for watering, but later when the crops start, each lot has but three hours in the twenty four assigned to it. The lots in the town are 80 x 160 but most families own two. She has three, one of which is allowed to remain uncultivated, so that she has nine hours water-time for the two lots. The time she says, occurs to each in turn and when it is in the night-time the gardener stays up to superintend it, and at the end of the time wakes the man whose garden is to have the benefit next.

Balli ABSTRACT This thesis examines the feelings of generational anxiety in the Mormon community from 1869 to 1890 and how those feelings intersected with ideas about reading. During this time, older members of the Mormon community in Utah Territory feared how changes in and threats to Mormon society might negatively affect young people’s beliefs, abilities, knowledge, and adherence to their parents’ religion. Older Mormons recognized a potential ally and enemy in books, newspapers, and other reading materials, which they believed could dramatically shape young people for good or for ill depending on the quality of the material. This thesis argues these older Mormons borrowed many elements from other US literary cultures and repurposed them for distinctly Mormon ends, including achieving theosis (chapter 1), navigating changing dynamics in Mormon families (chapter 2), and building their utopic society, Zion (chapter 3). This research adds to the work of those scholars who have combined the history of Mormonism with book history. It incorporates the voices of everyday Mormons to bring into focus the entire ecosystem of reading for young Mormons by focusing not only on fiction but also on biography, scripture, “Church works,” history, and other genres.

    Thomas L. Kane A Guide to the Sources David J. Whitaker homas Leiper Kane was born in 1822 to John K. Kane and Jane Duval TLeiper. John K. Kane was a personal friend of several U.S. presidents, including Andrew Jackson and James K. Polk, who appointed John to the federal bench in Philadelphia. Until his death in 1858, John remained well connected to the power brokers in Washington, D.C. His son Thomas, also trained in the law, first learned of the Latter-day Saints through Phila- delphia newspaper accounts that described the forced migration of the Mormons from their homes in Illinois in early 1846. Using connections through his father, Thomas began what would be a lifetime role as a friend, mediator, and peacemaker for the Mormons as they dealt with sometimes hostile government officials and tried to combat a negative public image. Thomas traveled west to the Mormon encampments along the Missouri River valley and assisted in the call of the Mormon Battalion in 1846; he publicized their plight in an influential lecture called The Mormons, pub- lished in 1850; and he was a major factor in the peaceful resolution of the Utah War in 1857–58. Thomas continued throughout his life to counsel, defend, and actively seek the welfare of the Latter-day Saints. He worked to soften anti-Mormon legislation while mentoring Latter-day Saint lead- ers like George Q. Cannon in the tasks of working with Congress and the public media to present a more positive and accurate view of the Latter-day Saints.

Cope: Edith Mary Turpin’s Observations about Mormonism 155 “‘I Cannot Refrain from Testifying’: Edith Mary Turpin’s Observations about Mormonism and Plural Marriage” Rachel Cope Edith Mary Turpin, a convert to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints, emigrated from England to America in 1886. Following her arrival in Utah, she penned a powerful letter to her closest living relatives, her half-brother, John Smith Turpin, and his wife, Elizabeth. John sub- sequently responded to Edith’s letter with a short note of his own. The original correspondence—transcriptions of which are included at the end of this article—are currently in the possession of John (Edith’s great-grandson) and Debbie Dester, of Provo, Utah.1 Edith wrote her letter, in part, to inform John and Elizabeth of her circumstances upon settling in Utah. (This appears to be the first letter she has written to them since her departure from England.) However, a more careful reading reveals that this is more than a simple report about her new home. Through the eloquent words Edith penned, one discovers the depth and breadth of her thoughts and feelings—the unification of her heart and mind. Harrisonburg, VA 22802-2462 (540) 432-4468 (540) 432-4488 (fax) (540) 574-4414 (home) [email protected] Though forgotten today, arguably the most celebrated hero of “Romantic” antebellum America was the sickly physician turned explorer, Dr. Elisha Kent Kane. At the time of his early death in 1857, Kane was one of the most celebrated men in America. During his short thirty-seven years of life, this surgeon from an aristocratic Philadelphia family accomplished more than most adventurers who lived to twice his age. Between 1843 and 1855 he traveled through China, East Asia, South America, India, Europe and Africa. He fought in the Mexican American war, made two highly-celebrated journeys to the Arctic, carried on a love affair with spirit-rapper Margaret Fox, and wrote one of the most successful books of the antebellum period. Most impressively, he became such a popular figure that when he died, the nation mourned his death for nearly a month as his casket wound from Havana to Philadelphia via steamboat and rail in a funeral procession that, to date, is still matched only by Abraham Lincoln’s. Because he participated in so many activities in such a short period of time, Elisha Kent Kane’s life provides a unique insight into antebellum America. His explorations exemplify the Romantic spirit that inspired the young nation at this time; his writing and publication efforts illuminate elements of mid-century authorship and book production; his relationship with Margaret Fox exposes aspects of antebellum religion and class relations; and the many performances, books, images, and pieces of ephemera celebrating his life provide a way to examine America’s emerging culture of consumption.

Kane (fig. 1) walked into Mormon Fhistory in 1846, Latter-day Saint leaders promised that his name would long be honored by the Mormons. In part they wanted to bolster Kane’s determination to take the deeply controversial stance of defending the Saints. When Kane announced his decision to travel to the Mormon refu- gee camps in Iowa in 1846, his family responded with panic. His father, John, saw only potential ruin in involvement with such a disreputable cause. “The case has no bright side,” he lamented, as Tom “is about to deal a blow to his own character as a right minded man, which he will feel through life.” He considered it the “veriest hallucination that ever afflicted an educated mind. It bows me in sorrow. All but this I could bear.”1 The Mormons, however, immediately recognized the value of such a well-connected individual, and they treated Kane as royalty when he arrived. When he spoke in public, the applause was “positively deafen- ing.” Kane told his parents, “I am idolized by my good friends.”2 In Sep- tember 1846, as Kane prepared to leave the camps, Patriarch John Smith (fig. 2), an uncle of Joseph Smith, promised him in a patriarchal blessing, “Thy name shall be had in honorable remembrance among the Saints to all generations.”3 As Kane defended the Mormons for nearly the next four decades, Latter-day Saint leaders often reiterated this promise.

Utah State University’s Merrill-Cazier Library houses the personal and historical collection of Leonard J. Arrington, a renowned scholar of the American West. As part of Arrington’s gift to the university, he requested that the university’s his- torical collection become the focus for an annual lecture on an aspect of Mormon history. Utah State agreed to the request and in 1995 inaugu- rated the annual Leonard J. Arrington Mormon History Lecture. Utah State University’s Special Collections and Archives is ideally suited as the host for the lecture series.
