Notable horses in each category are emphasised in green boxes. The mare had achieved new heights of stardom when achieving the ‘impossible’ in 2018 – completing the ‘Arc’ and Breeders Cup double – and continues to attract new supporters to the sport. Enable will be bidding – for the second time – for a historic third success in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in 2020. Beaten by French trained Waldgeist in the 2019 renewal, it seemed that Enable’s opportunity to make history was over until owner Prince Khalid Abdullah stepped in with the ultimate sporting gesture – she would race again in 2020 as a six-year-old. Enable started the 2020 season with a defeat in the G1 Eclipse Stakes (2000m) at Sandown Park with trainer John Gosden citing fitness as a possible cause of defeat. The mare bounced back to Group One glory with an easy success in a three-runner King George and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2400m) at Ascot and had a perfect trial for the ‘Arc’ with a comfortable win in the G3 September Stakes (2400m) on the all-weather at Kempton Park. It was debated after the 2019 ‘Arc’ that Enable had left her race behind in a titanic struggle with Crystal Ocean in the King George and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. With that in mind, John Gosden has cleverly campaigned the mare to avoid clashes with the top middle-distance performers: she avoided Love in the G1 Yorkshire Oaks (2400m) at York and swerved Ghaiyyath in the G1 Juddmonte International Stakes (2000m) at York. The Juddmonte owned super-star potentially faces her toughest ‘Arc’ test in 2020. Despite trainers, horses and jockeys suffering a disrupted season, a top-class field is expected to gather at Longchamp. Enable will have to concede weight to the top three-year-old filly Love, out-stay champion stablemate Stradivarius and reverse form with the improving Ghaiyyath. Can Enable make history with a third Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe? Of course she can! Just like stablemate Enable, Stradivarius broke his maiden as a juvenile on the all-weather surface at Newcastle in November 2016 under the floodlights. Spectators were unaware that they were witnessing a champion in the making. As a three-year-old Stradivarius returned with a victory in a handicap at Beverley (2000m) and looked like a name for the notebook. Success in the G2 Queen’s Vase (2800m) at Royal Ascot was followed by a first win in the G1 Goodwood Cup (3200m) at Glorious Goodwood and a third in the G1 St Leger (2900m) at Doncaster behind Capri. In 2018, Stradivarius was able to shine and dominate the staying division. He remained unbeaten in five starts including the G1 Ascot Gold Cup (4000m) at Royal Ascot and a second G1 Goodwood Cup (3200m). Success in the G2 Lonsdale Cup at York (3200m) marked the completion of a new million- pound bonus scheme in the UK to encourage and attract stayers to compete at the top level. It was a programme of eat, sleep, win, repeat for Stradivarius as he ended the season with a one and a half- length victory in the G2 British Champions Long Distance Cup (3200m) at Ascot on soft ground. It was a similar story in 2019. Wins in the G2 Yorkshire Cup (2800m), G1 Goodwood Cup (3200m) and G1 Ascot Gold Cup (4000m) alongside a second million-pound bonus which confirmed Stradivarius’ position at the top of the staying division. Even a narrow defeat in the G2 British Champions Long Distance Cup (3200m) did little to harm the horse’s reputation. Like 2020 itself, this season has been mixed and unconventional for the champion stayer. Rescheduling forced connections to drop in trip on seasonal reappearance, finishing third in the G1 Coronation Cup (2400m) at Newmarket (usually held at Epsom Downs). Royal Ascot may have lacked spectators but Stradivarius was able to produce one of the most visually impressive performances scoring by ten lengths in the G1 Ascot Gold Cup (4000m) before achieving an historic third victory in the G1 Goodwood Cup (3200m). Last Sunday he ventured to France for his first race start in the G2 Prix Foy (2400m). Settling behind the leader in a small field of six, he stayed on in the closing stages of the race but was held by the winner. With regular jockey Frankie Dettori favouring ‘Queen of the Turf’ Enable, Stradivarius will have to forge a new partnership in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. The narrow defeat in the G2 Prix Foy (2400m) at Paris Longchamp has demonstrated that the horse has the turn of foot required for an ‘Arc’. The question is however, can the champion stayer become a middle-distance master? Given it is John Gosden training it is safe say that any horse he presents for a feature race can never be dismissed. A son of leading French sire Siyouni, Sottsass is a half-brother to Sistercharlie who was transferred to America following a second in the 2017 G1 Prix de Diane (2100m) and has subsequently won seven Grade Ones including the G1 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (2200m). The success of the family led to Sottsass’ half-sister (by Dubawi) selling for two point five million euros at this year’s Deauville Select Sale. Sottsass was only raced twice as a juvenile and broke his maiden in a Clairefontaine maiden in October 2018. The colt improved considerably from two to three-years-old and recorded a first success of 2019 in the Classic campaign when scoring in the Listed Prix de Suresnes at Chantilly (2000m) before beating hot favourite Persian King in the G1 Prix du Jockey Club (2100m). A win in the G2 Prix Niel (2400m) confirmed the colt’s spot in the G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (2400m) running credibly to place third. 2020 has been mixed for Sottsass. Starting a short-priced favourite in the G2 Prix d’Harcourt (2000m) at Longchamp, he finished fourth behind Shaman.
