North Korea tests submarine-launched missile — South (4.01/5) SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea on Saturday tested what appeared to be a submarine-launched ballistic missile in the Sea of Japan, the South Korean defense ministry said, with the US and UK strongly condemning the test. “North Korea launched a projectile which was believed to be a submarine- launched ballistic missile (SLBM) around 6:30 pm (0930 GMT) in the East Sea (Sea of Japan) near the northeastern port of Sinpo”, a defense ministry spokesman said. “We are keeping close tabs on the North Korean military and maintaining a full defense posture”, he said. Korea sub missile test a ‘catastrophic failure’—analysts | North Korea warns of strike on Seoul’s presidential palace The missile flew 30 kilometers (18 miles) but the launch “appeared to have failed,” he added. UK Foreign Minister Philip Hammond said the test showed North Korea’s “blatant disregard” for its international obligations, while the US described it a “clear violation” of UN Security Council resolutions. “We call on North Korea to refrain from actions that further destabilize the region,” US State Department spokesman John Kirby said in a statement. North Korea has been pushing to acquire SLBM capability that would take its nuclear strike threat to a new level, allowing deployment far beyond the Korean peninsula and the potential to retaliate in the event of a nuclear attack. It has conducted a number of what it says were successful SLBM tests, but experts question the claim, suggesting Pyongyang had gone little further than a “pop-up” test from a submerged platform. The test-firing comes as North Korea gears up for a rare and much-hyped ruling party congress early next month, at which leader Kim Jong-Un is expected to take credit for pushing the country’s nuclear weapons program to new heights. Numerous analysts have suggested the regime might carry out a fifth nuclear test as a display of defiance and strength just before the congress opens. Tension has been high on the divided Korean peninsula since Pyongyang’s fourth nuclear test in January and rocket launch a month later that was widely seen as a disguised ballistic missile test. The UN Security Council responded by imposing its strongest sanctions to date over the North’s nuclear weapons program. Pyongyang has responded by staging a series of short- and mid-range missile tests and claiming a series of significant technical breakthroughs in its nuclear strike capability. It claimed it had miniaturized a nuclear warhead to fit on a missile and successfully tested an engine designed for an inter-continental ballistic missile that could reach the US mainland. While some experts say the claims are exaggerated, most acknowledge that the North’s nuclear and ballistic missile program have made significant strides. N. 3 Friends and family hold private memorial after Prince cremated (2.01/5) Prince's "most beloved" friends and family have held a private memorial for the music superstar after his body was cremated. The American musician died at his Paisley Park estate near Minneapolis on Thursday morning after he was found collapsed in a lift. He was 57. A private ceremony celebrating his life was held at Paisley Park on Saturday, attended by Prince's sister Tyka Nelson and brother-in-law Maurice Phillips. Prince's body has been cremated and the "final storage" of his remains will be private, his publicist Yvette Noel-Schure said. She said: "A few hours ago, Prince was celebrated by a small group of his most beloved family, friends and his musicians, in a private, beautiful ceremony to say a loving goodbye. "Prince's remains have been cremated and their final storage will remain private. "We ask for your blessings and prayers of comfort for his family and close friends at this time. "The cause of death remains unknown and it will be at least four weeks before we receive the results of the autopsy. "An announcement will be made at a future date for a musical celebration. " One woman who attended the memorial told the Press Association: "It was actually a party. People danced and ate. " Percussionist Sheila E and bassist Larry Graham were among the mourners who attended the small service. Flowers from inside Paisley Park were handed out afterwards to fans gathered outside the estate. Prince was a Jehovah's Witness which required a funeral to take place within a week of his death. He was found by staff members on Thursday morning, more than 12 hours after he was last seen alive when he was dropped off at Paisley Park. Police are investigating whether foul play was involved in his death after authorities said they had "no reason to believe" the Purple Rain star killed himself and there were "no obvious signs of trauma" on his body. Celebrity news website TMZ reported that the singer overdosed on a painkiller called Percocet six days before his death, forcing his private jet to make an emergency landing in Atlanta, Georgia. Tributes have continued to pour in for the singer, with Eric Clapton crediting Prince with helping him escape a "massive downward spiral with drink and drugs" after he saw Purple Rain. He also said Prince inspired his 1986 hit Holy Mother. Meanwhile, Will Smith revealed he was one of the last people to speak to Prince the night before his death. Writing on Facebook, the actor said: "Jada & I mourn with all of you the loss of a beautiful poet, a true inspiration, and one of the most magnificent artists to ever grace this earth. 4 Dave Chappelle calls Prince's death 'the black 9/11' (2.00/5) Dave Chappelle has called Prince's death 'the black 9/11,' as he paid tribute to the late pop star in a four-hour stand-up set. The comedian dedicated his show at the Chapel in San Francisco in the early hours of Saturday to Prince as he shared his memories of the late musician, who died on Thursday at the age of 57. 'I almost thought about not coming tonight, but my band was like, 'Yo, Prince would definitely not condone that,' the 42-year-old told the crowd, reported The San Francisco Chronicle. 'And now there is no place I'd rather be.' Scroll down for video 'This is black 9/11,' he said of the public mood after Prince's death. But he added: 'It's so much better that we grieve together.' The comedian's backup band played Nothing Compares 2 U and Kiss while the stage was lit with purple light as Dave reminisced about his memories of Prince. He said he learned of the musician's death after reporters called him for comment. 'I kept wondering all day, 'Why are they calling me?,' he said. 'I'll tell you what: I didn't know him well, but I knew him well.' Dave famously impersonated Prince in a 2004 sketch for his Chappelle's Show. The skit showed the pop star killing it on the basketball court and then serving up pancakes to the losers after the game. It was based on a story Charlie Murphy told about a time he and brother Eddie Murphy were invited to hang out at Prince's house in 1985. Prince was also a big fan of Dave's impersonation, even using a photo of the skit for the cover of his 2014 single Breakfast Can Wait. Dave also released at statement about Prince's death to WCCO CBS Minnesota on Friday, calling the Little Red Corvette singer 'a musical giant.' 'As a city, they exported a musical giant,' he said of Prince's home town. 'His admirers are a community that spans the globe. His legacy is an immense offering of music, love and laughter. And a fight for fairness to artist,' Dave said in the statement. 'Nothing of this world will begin to fill the void of his absence except his memory. And he added: 'Scientifically a memory is almost neurologically identical to an experience. 'So remember your loved ones often. Forget their faults and remember the best of what they made you feel. In that way... all of us are immortal gifts to one another that keeps on giving.'

Jasmine Curtis-Smith’s big bro now her lover on-screen No, it was not “strange” at all. TV5 actress Jasmine Curtis-Smith asserted that she didn’t feel ill at ease being paired with Richard Gutierrez in Carlo J. Caparas’ fantasy series, “Panday.” To backtrack a bit: Richard was involved with Jasmine’s older sister Anne Curtis ages ago. People merely jumped to conclusions, she explained. “They kept saying it was weird, so I ended up imbibing it and thinking the same thing,” Jasmine responded to the Inquirer’s question. “But there was really nothing to feel awkward about.” Tapings are going smoothly, she related. “It’s fun. Richard is ma-chika (chatty). Between takes, we talk about the TV shows that we enjoy. I recently introduced him to ‘Orphan Black.’ That is how we build rapport on the set.” They also joke about their common history. “I once teased him that I was only 4 years old when I met him,” she recalled. “He countered that he was 15 then.” For the record, she clarified that she was 9 when Richard and Anne were a couple. Needless to say, Jasmine never imagined that her sister’s ex-beau would one day be her onscreen lover. Quite adamantly, she insisted that she never found him attractive back then. Richard was definitely not her childhood crush. “I was a baby then,” she exclaimed. “For me, it’s automatic… I will never look at my sister’s boyfriend that way. At the time, I treated Richard as a kuya ().” To have the “feels” for Richard, she gasped, would be “incestuous.” In any case, Jasmine volunteered that her current love life is “happy.” She’d rather not “compare” this present relationship with previous involvements, specifically with actor-singer , which can only be described as stormy, to say the least. (There were reports that Anne didn’t approve of Sam.) “Every step I took has brought me to where I am now,” she turned introspective. “I am still growing up. Whatever I learned from the past, I use it in the present.” She told the Inquirer that she is currently dating a non-show biz guy who has show biz connections. The rumor mill has identified the “constant date” as Jeff Ortega and “he is related to Coleen Garcia,” Jasmine noted. Another persistent question is whether Jeff has gained Anne’s stamp of approval. A photo of Anne dining with Jasmine and Jeff has cropped up in cyberspace. “Just because we have a photo together doesn’t mean he’s already off the hook,” Jasmine quipped, quick on the draw. “He is still ‘under observation.’ My parents and sister will always look out for me.” It seems that Jasmine can very well take care of herself, though. In “Panday,” she was tasked to learn arnis, muay Thai, jujitsu, wing chun. “On my first day, I had to do a fight scene. It’s a new challenge for me. Good thing, I enjoy mixed martial arts,” recounted Jasmine, who now sports a chestnut tan that’s courtesy of “a Davao trip.” Apart from “Panday,” Jasmine is also working on “Forever Sucks,” a web series from D5 Studio Originals (the online arm of TV5). In “Forever Sucks,” which combines such youthful genres as horror and romantic comedy, she plays a vampire who works in a call center’s graveyard shift. “It’s awesome to be part of a pioneering show,” she said.

Covering Kobe, Manny: 2 farewells in a week LOS ANGELES—All my life as a sports fan, it had always been headlines about Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers, or Manny Pacquiao and his stunning knockouts, that I woke up to. I’m 26, and Kobe had played 20 years with the Lakers, trying passionately to become the next Michael Jordan. Pacquiao, meanwhile, had been a pro boxer for about 21 years, 15 of those spent headlining Philippine newspapers as he obliterated weight classes, starting with his first US fight. When I say “all my life as a sports fan,” I mean it. Bryant drops 81 points, Pacquiao shuts down “Golden Boy” Oscar de la Hoya; the Lakers raise their banner 16, the Filipino boxer wins his eighth division belt; 20 years of Kobe, 15 of Manny. I got to watch them—cover them—say goodbye in all kinds of emotional funk in the span of five days, live, all-access. Deep inside, I felt like I was part of the crowd in both instances, needing to draw from the deepest corners of journalism ethics to keep myself glued to my seat, seemingly unaffected by the hoopla. I had seen Pacquiao train countless of times and heard him speak in press conferences and interviews even more, but that night at MGM Grand Garden Arena was the first time I got to see the Filipino boxing champ in action from just rows behind the ring. It was overwhelming as it was amazing to hear the roar of the crowd a hundred times louder live than on television. Nervous energy Naturally, I was pulling for Pacquiao, as I had always done even before writing about him became my line of work. It’s hard to bet against him and his punishing punches that had brought down champions—most of them bigger than him—one after the other. Yet there was a nervous energy inside the arena, or maybe that was just me. There was heightened anticipation to see if Pacquiao could, for one last time, go out as the ruthless fighter he once was in what could be his final fight. That was evident with how the 14,665 fans inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena rose to their feet every time Pacquiao tagged Timothy Bradley with combinations, though not as potent as they used to be, like a knockout of the old days was about to happen anytime now. Sitting at Row F, I exhaled a heavy breath not realizing I had been holding it in because, like the fans, I had been waiting for the same thing. Scoring machine There was the same mystery surrounding Bryant’s finale. Two weeks before, Shaquille O’Neal challenged the former scoring machine to put up 50 in his final game, but Bryant turned him down. There was no doubt that fans, who came to Staples Center in droves in their Kobe gear, wanted a big game from Lakers’ longtime superstar, but with how Bryant had been diminished to occasional scoring outbursts here and there, it was hard to count on it. Add to that, the fact that the Lakers are terrible, second worst in the league if records were concerned, and for most of the night, not even Bryant’s final game could seem to change that. The Utah Jazz built an early lead against the Lakers, but nobody was looking at the score. All eyes, including mine, were on Bryant, who seemed on pace for a career night. The rabid supporters probably didn’t care whether the Lakers got victory No. 18 in their last game of the season, but I did. If that were any ordinary Lakers game, my heart would be making somersaults in jubilation as the team I absolutely hated was losing. Only this time, with the home team down by double digits with half a quarter to play, I was rooting for the Lakers to win. On a rare occasion, I was rooting for Bryant, one of the fiercest competitors the game had ever seen, to go out the way he deserves to. Different circumstances Their farewells may have held the same theme, but Pacquiao and Bryant were both leaving their sport under different circumstances. Bryant, whose tail end of his career was marred with frustration over injuries, decided it was time to hang up his sneakers when his body could no longer endure the wear and tear that comes with his sport. Pacquiao, who still packs a mean punch at 37, felt he needed to quit to get into a whole new arena that is politics. Yet despite that, everything harmonized for their final dance. These sports heroes who gave their hometown crowd something to take pride in for decades—from trophies in LA to belts for the Philippines—bid adieu to the admiring crowd in almost the same manner: As winners they have always been. And it had been an absolute pleasure to watch. There was 1:09 left in the 12th round when the MGM crowd began their final salute to Pacquiao, one section after the other getting on their feet even as action on the ring was nonexistent— Manny had won this bout and Bradley looked too spent to land a haymaker. Kobe received his final applause at the two-minute mark of the game in what had been an emotional night for the Lakers franchise, and that was even before he singlehandedly spearheaded a late Lakers rally in a show of old brilliance en route to the win. And there it was, the end of an era in sports as my generation’s sports icons closed a chapter in their respective careers. For the final time, Kobe Bryant, as gold confetti swirled around him, waved to the crowd on April 13 in Los Angeles, just as Pacquiao climbed up his corner and raised his arms five nights before in Las Vegas. This is the kind of ending you’d pay to watch over again. In my case, the kind of thing you’d want to write about at least once in your life. Lucky for me, I had the chance to cover two historic farewells in one week.

Despite busy career, Julie Anne San Jose all set to graduate This coming May is sure to be a momentous month for Julie Anne San Jose’s career and personal life: She will be celebrating her 22nd birthday, releasing her third solo album, holding another major concert and more importantly, graduating from college. “Finishing my studies has always been a top priority for me. And I’m really happy that I’m finally fulfilling this dream of mine,” the singer, who’s set to earn her degree in mass communications at the Angelicum College, told the Inquirer at a recent press conference. Despite the success singing has given her, Julie Anne never lost sight of her goal of having an education because, she pointed out, a career in the entertainment industry is but fleeting. “I don’t know how much longer I’ll be in this industry. But should I find myself out of the limelight in the future, at least I’ll have a fall back,” Julie Anne said, adding that she believes that having a diploma is perhaps the “best gift a child can give his or her parents.” With all her show biz engagements, it’s remarkable that the GMA 7 talent has managed to complete her course in four years. Needless to say, it wasn’t easy. “I’ve been stressed these past few weeks, because I still have to finish a lot of requirements,” said Julie Anne, who is running for honors. “Well, hopefully!” In fact, as she’s wrapping up last-minute school work, Julie Anne has already begun preparing for her coming concert, “In Control,” on May 14 at the Kia Theatre (call TicketNet at 911555). “I’ve been working out these past few weeks for me to be fit enough to carry out the dance numbers well,” she said. Mounted by Dreamstar Events and GMA 7, the concert is also a celebration of Julie Anne’s 10th year in show biz, as well as a reflection of how she has evolved, from an aspiring singer joining talent contests to a diamond-selling recording artist, who has already performed in some of the country’s biggest venues. “It’s also a way of expressing my gratitude to the people who have become part of my journey, and to the fans who help me overcome obstacles,” related Julie Anne who recalled that her father used to be against her entering the entertainment industry. “My father once asked me to quit show biz; now, he drives me to work!” The repertoire, she related, will be composed of OPM tunes, covers of foreign hits and her body of original material. The singer is expected to dish out her newer songs, like “Tidal Wave,” from her latest EP, “Forever”—a collection of ditties that meld R&B and electronic dance music. “I want to continue down this route. It’s a departure from the type of music I did in the past, which was more on ballads,” said the singer, whose 2012 single, “I’ll Be There,” achieved quadruple platinum status. “Fans can expect more of something similar in my new album.” E-mail [email protected]

Consumer groups want blood over ‘Comeleak’ OUTRAGED consumer advocacy groups, information technology professionals and concerned voters are considering bringing complaints for the impeachment of election officials after a massive leak of personal details of more than 55 million registered voters from a database of the Commission on Elections (Comelec). The hacking of the Comelec’s database, now known as “Comeleak,” could lead to failure of elections and exposed millions of registered voters to the risk of identity theft, the angry groups said during a forum in Makati City on Saturday. “We have to teach the Comelec a lesson … Impeachment is the only way to hold the impeachable officials of the Comelec accountable,” Tonyo Cruz of TXTPower, a consumer advocacy group composed of cell phone users, said. LOOK: Comelec website hacked Can’t be used for fraud The Comelec had no comment on Saturday on the impeachment threat. But James Jimenez, spokesperson for the commission, said the leaked data could not be used for electoral fraud. “No. That’s one of the things we have always been sure of. Because of the elections, we have different sets of computers. They will not be run on the same servers. We will not even use that website,” Jimenez said. “We have personal verification on Election Day. We will not be using a polluted source,” he added. Jimenez also denied the Comelec website was unprotected. “No one in this day and age would put out a website without some sort of protection,” he said. “But we have to remember that hacking attempts are continuous attempts over time until they are able to find a way,” he said. “We never denied the breach happened. We know the breach happened,” he said. On Friday, Jimenez, said the leak would not affect the integrity of national elections on May 9, as the automated balloting would be run on a different server, not on the one that was hacked. National Bureau of Investigation agents arrested a suspect in the hacking of the Comelec’s website last month, Paul Biteng, 23, a new graduate of information technology, in his home in Manila on Wednesday night. READ: Comelec hacker arrested, asks NBI chief for a selfie NBI officials said they were hunting down Biteng’s alleged accomplices, believed to be members of the hacker group Anonymous Philippines. The second group is believed to be behind the massive leak of data from the Comelec’s website containing personal information of more than 55 million registered voters. Possible consequences Reginald Tongol, a lawyer and information technology professional, spoke about the possible consequences of the leak at the Makati forum. “The elections will push through by hook or by crook. It would be more of a failure of elections or massive fraud,” Tongol said. He said it would be easy to fake IDs, as the leak would give fraudsters a pool of information to use. READ: Hackers forged Palace site “Before they could fake IDs with fictitious details. But now the information can be accurate,” he said. Lawyer Toby Purisima said the people and the Comelec should be more vigilant now because of the leak. According to consumer advocates at the forum, the Comelec may still be responsible even if the leak does not affect next month’s elections. With reports from Estrella Torres, Leila B. 10 NBA: Celtics’ Thomas escapes suspension after swing at opponent NEW YORK, United States — Boston Celtics guard Isaiah Thomas was relieved to hear on Saturday that he won’t be suspended after what he said was an inadvertent swipe at the head of Atlanta Hawks guard Dennis Schroder. The incident came in the first quarter of the Celtics’ 111-103 victory over the Hawks in game three of their NBA Eastern Conference playoff series on Friday, a win that saw Boston trim the deficit in the best-of-seven set to 2-1. READ: NBA reviewing if jump-on-back foul should be flagrant | NBA: Grizzlies forward Barnes banned for off-court move An inspired Thomas poured in 42 points, but many observers thought he’d be missing game four. Instead he was assessed a flagrant one foul by the league but not suspended. “I’m really focused on game four, but I’m glad I wasn’t suspended,” Thomas told reporters at Celtics practice on Saturday. “I knew what I did. On replay, yeah, slower version, it’s going to look like I looked at him and tried to hit him. But I didn’t. “I’m just glad I wasn’t suspended and I can help my team.” Germany’s Schroder was still angry about the incident after the game. Both players were assessed technical fouls for a heated exchange shortly after Thomas, who was pointing at something with his left hand, appeared to swing his already extended arm at Shroder’s head as the Hawks player moved past him. “I’m not going to let nobody slap me in my face. I told him that,” Schroder told the Atlanta Journal- Constitution. “If you want to play like that, we’ll play like that. I was mad.” In other post-game disciplinary action on Saturday, the NBA fined Celtics guard Marcus Smart $5,000 for flopping in the second half.

NBA: Pain-free Curry set to return Sunday for Warriors LOS ANGELES, United States — Golden State expect star guard Stephen Curry to play against the Houston Rockets on Sunday, after he trained without pain in his injured right ankle. “I expect him to play, he looked fine,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said after Curry practiced with the team Saturday. READ: NBA: No concerns after Curry ankle scan — Warriors | Harden’s late shot lifts Rockets over Warriors 97-96 The reigning NBA champion Warriors lead the Rockets 2-1 in their best-of-seven first-round Western Conference playoff series. Curry missed the last two games — including a 97-96 loss to the Rockets in Houston on Thursday — after spraining his ankle in the series opener. Curry joined in a five-on-five training game with teammates and was listed as “probable” for Sunday’s contest. “We went full-court, five-on-five and he didn’t have any pain this morning or after the workout,” Kerr said. “So we’re expecting him to play, but we’ll see how he is tomorrow morning.” Kerr could restrict Curry’s minutes as he seeks to make sure his star is fit for a deep playoff run. “The conditioning and the rhythm is an issue, after being out that long, but we’ll monitor it,” Kerr said. “Steph doesn’t generally take too long to get his rhythm back, so I think he’ll be fine. But we may have to alter the substitution pattern a little bit and get him out earlier, depending on his wind.” Curry, who averaged 30.1 points per game and made a record 402 three-pointers in the regular season, had wanted to play on Thursday, but was overruled by Kerr and team medical staff.

Help the (stray) beasts, animal advocates urge bets ANIMAL welfare advocates have urged candidates to consider the plight of their voiceless four-legged “constituents” and provide safe shelters for stray dogs and cats. Beebom Aquino and Angela Dominique Bassig, of animal-welfare groups Hope for Strays in the Philippines and Cara (Compassion and Responsibility for Animals), lamented that dogs and cats in were routinely euthanized in city pounds due to the lack of space to house the animals. In an interview with the Inquirer, the two expressed hope the next administration would provide a small portion of land in a province near the metropolis for a “no-kill” shelter for strays. “For us, it’s a matter of giving them a safe, comfortable place to live in, or for the sick ones to live out their remaining days,” said Bassig. The two also host fundraising events to help finance rescued dogs’ veterinary care. “The put-to-sleep method (PTS or euthanasia) is part of many city ordinances concerned with managing strays in pounds,” said Aquino. “We, however, are personally against this.” Under Republic No. Act 8485 (the Animal Welfare Act of 1998) the killing of animals is allowed for specific reasons, one of which is animal population control. Euthanasia of strays is also allowed under RA 9482 (Anti-Rabies Act of 2007). The two Pateros residents, who share a three-level townhouse with 18 adopted dogs and one cat, suggested that a one-hectare lot somewhere—such as Bulacan—would be a good place for strays. “We’d be willing to manage it,” Bassig said. Aquino and Bassig also volunteer at the Pateros municipal pound, which has become a no-kill facility since they began helping out there last June. There’s only one caretaker, Mang Celso, they said. The mayor was supportive, added Bassig, but noted that the local government was short of funds for the pound’s maintenance. They could only pay for the rent of the lot, which is privately owned. More recently, Aquino and Bassig have been working closely with the Manila city pound. It’s a partnership that began when they adopted one of the dogs, a Labrador mix that was given up by its owner who was moving to the United States. “Kobe was very aggressive when we first met him in the Manila pound. But the second we reached [the pound in] Pateros, he [started] walking with me and didn’t want to leave my side. The aggressiveness went away. Now he lives with us,” said Aquino. To date, the couple have put up for adoption 27 dogs from the Manila city pound. Pateros had 18 dogs when they took over last year—now they’re down to four, thanks to all the people who adopted pets. Formerly full-time employees in the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry, Aquino and Bassig shifted careers to accommodate their animal welfare advocacy. They also do rescue work. Alerted through Facebook, the two once went as far as Pangasinan to rescue an abused dog, fueled by nothing more than “passion,” Aquino said. A Facebook page called Save Manila Pound Dogs and Cats was created by one associate early this year and received overwhelming response in the beginning, Aquino said. “The problem with the Manila pound is that no one has stepped up again. The page reached over 1,000 members, but only 10 percent donated, and only 3 percent actively adopted,” she said. “The last batch of dogs we put up for adoption was in March.”

Myriad of sites reveal themselves in magical coastal city of Miami I’m in south Florida, heading down Interstate 95 (I-95), the main Interstate highway on the east coast of the US. In some areas, this heavily trafficked road, which runs from Maine to Florida and serves major cities such as Boston, New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, DC, reaches four and even five lanes in each direction. Beginning in the northern state of Maine at the Canadian border, I-95 (despite a few small patches yet to be completed in Pennsylvania and New Jersey) ends its nearly 3,200-kilometer run in the southern part of the city of Miami. Reaching the outskirts of Miami, I spot white apartment towers and high-rise office buildings gleaming in the sun. I recall Florida’s reputation as the “Sunshine State” and so far, nature has not let it down. Welcome to Miami, the city of museums, nightlife and ethnic food, also known as the “Magic City,” the “capital of Latin America” – a city replete with the sounds and flavors of the Caribbean. The city’s mosaic includes thousands of residents from Cuba, Argentina, Venezuela, Colombia, and Spain. Demographically, the population of Miami-Dade County, which includes Miami, Miami Beach and other smaller municipalities, contains about 2.7 million persons. Approximately 123,000 Jews, including 5,200 Israeli adults, live in the 1,300 sq.km. Miami- Dade County, which has been described as “brash, beautiful, exotic and vibrant.” Since two-thirds of the population are of Hispanic origin, Miami remains one of America’s great multi-cultural cities. Business-wise, Miami serves as the headquarters of Latin America operations for more than 1,400 multinational corporations, including Cisco, Disney, Exxon, Microsoft, Yahoo, Oracle, and Visa International. Like many visitors, I begin my usual visit to Miami by heading to the Bayside Market Place, a 6.5-hectare, waterfront area of more than 100 shops, restaurants, and attractions that sometimes feature free concerts. While the area is very touristy, it is close to Bayfront Park, an attractive waterfront public space. One of my favorite haunts is the nearby American Airlines Arena, the home of the Miami Heat basketball team and a venue for major music events. Israeli basketball fans, many of whom follow the Cleveland Cavaliers, once led by Israeli coach David Blatt; remember that the star of the Cavaliers, LeBron James, bolted from Miami to Cleveland. Israeli fans also know that Micky Arison, Israeli-born, American businessman and chairman of Carnival Corporation, is the owner of the Miami Heat. Hardrock Café Miami, a popular watering hole, is situated in Bayside Market. Located nearby is Museum Park, a lush greenway. Here tourists scan the Port of Miami, the cruise capital of the world – funneling more than four million passengers a year to destinations in the Caribbean. Any snapshot of Miami features the Freedom Tower, one of the historic buildings in downtown Miami. Built in 1925, the peach-colored Mediterranean Revival tower was the home of the now-defunct Miami News. After the overthrow of the Batista regime in 1959 in Cuba by Fidel Castro, the structure served as a processing center for Cuban immigrants who fled the Communist takeover. Today the edifice hosts art shows and cultural events. Book lovers flock to Miami every November for the Miami Book Fair International held at the downtown campus of Miami-Dade College. Another attraction is the Historical Museum of South Florida. The city cherishes its art, especially in such facilities as the Perez Art Museum Miami. A visit to the Adrienne Arscht Center for the Performing Arts is recommended. Art also can be viewed outdoors. Travelers drive to the Wynwood Art District, bounded by North 36th St., North 20th St., 1-95 and Northeast First Avenue, where they discover funky galleries sandwiched between auto repair shops. This area features one of the largest openair street art installations in the world, the Wynwood Walls. I spent much of an afternoon at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, 3251 South Miami Ave, a subtropical setting not to be missed. Vizcaya was built as the winter estate of Chicago businessman James Deering, (1859 to 1925). The house contains antique artworks and furnishings collected in Europe and the US, including outstanding fabric paintings. It also features formal lush gardens so beautiful that brides in their white gowns come to take pre-wedding photos in the gardens. The view of Biscayne Bay is magnificent. I OFTEN break up a visit to Miami, especially in the summer when the temperature reaches 90+ degrees (F), by taking a sightseeing cruise around Biscayne Bay. The glistening bay water remains a wonderful backdrop, especially if your heart’s desire is see the huge billionaire yachts and the mansions on Fisher Island and Millionaire’s Row, or as they love to say in Miami, “the homes of the rich and famous.” It is exciting to view the downtown Miami skyline and Port of Miami. You can board Island Queen Cruises docked at Bayside Marketplace. I stopped at the Miami Marriott Biscayne Bay, 1633 North Bayshore Drive, Miami, (marriottbiscaynebay.com). Located at the intersection of Miami Arts and Design districts, the hotel is minutes to the Port of Miami, South Beach, Bayside Marketplace, American Airlines Arena and Jungle Island. A short drive brings one to the new Marlins Park, home of the Miami Marlins baseball team. The hotel features 31 floors with 600 guest rooms, including 21 suites, including stunning views of the bay or downtown Miami. Miami Marriott Biscayne Bay is only 12 kilometers from Miami International Airport, the gateway to South America. A favorite site in Miami is “Little Havana,” where you can partake of Cuban culture, with no passport required. Stop there, if you can, on what is called “Cultural Fridays,” the last Friday of the month when the whole neighborhood feels like a block party on Calle Ocho, which is actually Southwest Eighth Street between 13th and 17th Avenues. Wander past restaurants, markets and monuments related to Cuban history, including Domino Park, where men play spirited games of dominoes, a national pastime in Cuba. Area restaurants abound, though most tourists head to Versailles Restaurant, 3555 Southwest Eighth Street, at the far western end of Little Havana. Miami still attracts even long-time residents of South Florida, including many from the Jewish community who once lived in Miami and moved north to Palm Beach County, an hour’s drive north. Many South Floridians, like Marshall and Bernice Cohen of Boynton Beach, often travel to Miami. Their daughter, son-in law and grandchildren all live in Miami-Dade, and Cohen taught in the Miami-Dade school system for many years. They still attend High Holiday services at Temple Judea, Coral Gables. Others frequent kosher restaurants in Miami-Dade. Three Jewish community centers flourish in the area, as do 81 synagogues, of which 52 are Orthodox (23 are Chabad), seven are Sephardic, 12 are affiliated with the Conservative movement, seven with the Reform movement, two are Reconstructionist; and one “other,” according to Dr. Ira M Sheskin, editor of the American Jewish Year Book. After you’ve seen the myriad of sights in Miami, head to nearby Miami Beach with its glamorous South Beach, the Jewish Museum of Florida, the Holocaust Memorial, the Bass Museum of Art and Bal Harbor. 14 Bets warned not to fly ‘colorum’ NOW IT’S “colorum” aircraft. The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) has warned politicians renting airplanes to fly to campaign stops not to deal with unlicensed aircraft operators. In a statement, Capt. Beda Badiola, CAAP assistant director general of the Flight Standard Inspectorate Service (FSIS), said an aircraft was considered to be “colorum” if it does not have an aircraft operator certificate (AOC). “The AOC basically serves as the license for an air carrier to operate commercially,” Badiola said. He said that under Republic Act No. 9497 —or the Civil Aviation Authority Act of 2008 —it was the CAAP through the FSIS that issued AOCs to air carriers that had a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity (CPCN) issued by the Civil Aviation Board. In essence, Badiola said, an air carrier that had an AOC was “guaranteed” to have a “system in place to ensure the safety of its passengers.” “Passengers who avail themselves of travel insurance will find it difficult, if not almost impossible, to collect from an insurance firm should the air operator have neither an AOC nor a CPCN,” he said. He said CAAP records showed only 36 air operators had AOCs. Badiola said that under the law, any Philippine air carrier may apply for an OAC. “The CAAP [is reminding] the public, particularly politicians renting aircraft for their campaign… [without an AOC, an aircraft is like] a public utility vehicle that cannot legally ferry passengers without a franchise, and it would be considered colorum,” he said. 15 Gabriela asks Duterte to call off supporters DAVAO CITY—Gabriela has called on presidential candidate Rodrigo Duterte to ask his supporters to stop their attacks on the women’s group, saying it had already acknowledged the efforts of the mayor’s campaign team, including his apology for the rape joke. “We hope the apology is meant to recognize the mistake and an assurance that it will never happen again,” Gert Ranjo-Libang said in a open letter to the mayor. Despite this, Libang said, the attacks by the mayor’s supporters continued. “Sadly, the issue is far from over. Numerous individuals and groups claiming to be Duterte supporters are waging a cyber campaign to discredit Gabriela and Gabriela Women’s Party. We are now subjected to cyberbullying with the spreading of malicious and incorrect facts about our organization,” Libang said. A meme circulating online accuses Gabriela of not doing anything for the drought-stricken farmers in North Cotabato, especially for those who were killed and hurt in the violent dispersal on April 1, but said that it was quick to criticize Duterte for the rape joke. Gabriela was among the groups that provided assistance to the Kidapawan farmers who were hurt and arrested. Members of Gabriela in Davao City said several Duterte supporters mistook the group for another women’s group that filed a complaint against the mayor. That group was allegedly allied with Liberal Party presidential candidate Mar Roxas. Libang said the attacks on Gabriela online appeared to be orchestrated and aimed at crippling the group, which has unflinchingly criticized the present as well as past administrations for failing to uphold women’s rights and welfare. “The posts of different persons are obviously orchestrated because the content and graphics are the same. Because of the flood of negative contents every second, we are having difficulty tracking genuine concerns that need our clarification,” Libang said. Gabriela said cyberbullying, which includes the flooding of its Facebook inbox, would affect the services of the group, particularly in responding to alerts and distress calls channeled through their social media accounts. “Our Facebook inbox, which is meant to receive requests for help, is flooded with spam messages. This keeps us from immediately responding to people who are expecting support. These actions of persons and groups who support Mayor Duterte’s candidacy deny victims who seek our urgent assistance,” Libang said.

Urgent repairs ordered on Boeing 787 Dreamliner engines A irlines have been ordered to carry out an urgent fix on 176 Boeing 787 Dreamliners because of an engine icing problem. The instruction has been given by the Federal Aviation Administration Authority in the US and follows an incident on Jan 29 when one of the two engines on a Japan Airlines 787 shut down in mid-flight and could not be restarted. However the pilot was able to land the plane safely using one engine. Describing the problem as an “urgent safety issue”, the FAA has given airlines until the first week in October to complete the work. In the meantime pilots have been instructed to carry out special ice removal procedures during flights. It is the latest in a series of problems encountered by the 787. Billed as the most sophisticated aircraft ever made, its maiden flight was delayed by two years. The FAA, the US aviation safety regulator, said the problem which applies to an estimated 176 Dreamliners using a particular engine produced by GE – the GEnx-1B PIP2. According to the FAA directive, the root of the problem is due to damage being sustained because of ice shedding on the fan blades, causing them to rub against another part of the engine. “Susceptibility to heavy fan blade rubs, if not corrected, could result in engine damage and a possible in-flight non-restartable power loss of one or both engines,” the FAA said. "The potential for common cause failure of both engines in flight is an urgent safety issue," the administration added. "Ice shed from the fan blades caused the blades to rub against the fan case, resulting in engine vibration," GE Aviation spokesman Rick Kennedy said. The company said it hoped to avoid disruption to schedules and was working with airlines to tackle the problem, estimating that the repairs would take about 16 hours to complete. It is anticipated the work will be done by the end of September. "Ice shed from the fan blades ... causing the blades to rub against the fan case, resulting in engine vibration," GE Aviation spokesman Rick Kennedy told CNN. The company said it hoped to avoid disruption to schedules and was working with airlines to tackle the problem, estimating that the repairs would take about 16 hours to complete. Only last year safety investigators ordered an urgent review of lithium iron batteries on the 787 after a fire on a Japan Airlines Boeing 787 in Boston in 2013. The history of the Boeing 787 has been problematic. Its fibre glass construction was hailed as the future of aviation, improving not only fuel efficiency but passenger comfort. But even before the aircraft entered service there were lengthy delays and ANA, the first airline to fly the Dreamliner, received the plane three years behind schedule. Since entering service there have been problems reported with its batteries and, in June 2013, United Airlines had to make an emergency landing at Houston after problems were discovered with the Dreamliner’s braking system. A Boeing spokesman said it was working with GE to investigate the issue and complete the work required by the FAA. Repairs have already been carried out on 40 aircraft

Police find owner of tiger that roamed Conroe A day after a young tiger was spotted wandering the streets of Conroe wearing a collar and a leash, police have tracked down its owner. Authorities are not naming the owner, but there will be a hearing in the coming weeks to determine what will happen to the animal. "The police would like to thank the concerned citizens of our community, and actually from far away communities, for their help and concern regarding the tiger found yesterday," authorities said in a release. "We have located the owner and are currently working together to find the safest and best solution for permanency for the tiger. " Statewide, it is possible for the owner of a tiger to legally keep the exotic animal, provided the owner follows registration and insurance requirements. However, according to Conroe's municipal code, the city has a stricter ordinance that prohibits residents from keeping or harboring a "dangerous animal" in the city. On Thursday, Conroe Police Department spokeswoman Dorcy McGinnis said the owner would be issued a citation if he or she lived in the city. The Conroe Police Department received several calls starting at 11:50 a.m. Thursday from residents who saw the tiger wandering Coral Cove Pass near League Line Road and Longmire Road. Animal control officers responded and took custody of the tiger, which is young and female. The tiger was wearing a collar and had a leash attached, and is trained. Jonathan Gessner saw the tiger crouching in the bushes and as he got closer, the animal began shaking its rear. He considered running away, but decided he wanted to see what it would do. "Out of nowhere it took off running towards me, put her paws on my shoulders and started licking me in the face," Gessner said. "I was really scared at first. "

Pasadena police explain viral video of woman's arrest A viral video showing a police officer apparently dragging a woman out of a vehicle in Pasadena this week is making the rounds, with a member of her family outraged at what she calls the brutality in the 22-second clip. Mandy Sumpter-Stevens, who says she's a relative of the woman in the video, posted the clip late Wednesday on Facebook. In her written description, Sumpter-Stevens said the person in the video is her aunt, who she says is disabled and mentally challenged. It’s only 22 seconds of what the Pasadena Police Department says was a much more complicated situation. Spokesman Vance Mitchell told the Houston Chronicle that the woman in the video, 60-year-old Linda Grimes, was driving the wrong way down a feeder road, going against three to four lanes of oncoming traffic at around 5 p.m. Wednesday. She was finally stopped, Mitchell says, in the 200 block of Beltway 8 near Texas 225 in Pasadena. "The officer got out of his car, once she finally stopped. She didn't seem to be paying much attention," Mitchell says. The woman wouldn't open her door or window to the officer, but he noticed that another door on the car was open and reached in that way to turn off the ignition, Mitchell says. The woman resisted the officer's efforts to get her out of the car. At one point the woman's head can be seen hitting the pavement, but according to Mitchell, the video shows just a brief part of the interaction. The woman is handcuffed and the officer pulls her off camera. Mitchell says Grimes was arrested and taken into custody, where she was found to be intoxicated. She was charged with driving while intoxicated. According to Harris County court records, this arrest was Grimes’ third DWI charge. She was previously charged with DWI in February 2012 and in 1981. Grimes was released on $5,000 bond with a return court date scheduled for May 26 in the 228th State District Court. Sumpter-Stevens could not immediately be reached for comment.

RNC adopts resolution on Texas-style prison treatment AUSTIN -- Texas' success with rehabilitation and treatment programs in its prisons is about to get a national audience. On Friday, a Republican National Committee panel adopted a resolution advocating the expansion of treatment and rehabilitation programs for non-violent offenders as a way to lower recidivism rates and save taxpayers billions in incarceration costs. The resolution will be considered for adoption at the GOP national convention in July in Cleveland. "Texas has success with these programs, and we are the first of 10 states named in the resolution as having adopted these programs that have successfully reduced incarceration costs and making communities safer," said Texas GOP Chairman Tom Mechler, a former chairman of the Texas prison system's governing board who helped get the resolution adopted during a planning meeting in Florida. "Many states have looked to Texas on this . .. Our recidivism rate is down to 21.7 percent. California is at 65 percent. " Adoption of the resolution contrasts with the sentiment of the party two decades ago, when tougher punishment was at the top of the GOP agenda, at a time when candidates were calling for putting criminals away for longer sentences and spending less on treatment programs to pay for more prisons in Texas and other states. Those policies have faded in recent years, as spiraling costs to operate large prison systems with high-recidivism rates have fueled calls to spend taxpayer money on programs that work at reintegrating non-violent offenders back into communities as productive citizens as opposed to just keeping them locked up. Mechler said Friday's vote for the resolution was unanimous. Alabama, Georgia, Kansas, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, South Dakota and Utah also are named in the resolution as having made improvements in their justice systems with new diversion and treatment programs for non-violent offenders. "These policies increase personal responsibility, remove government obstacles to putting ex- offenders back to work, and use proven and effective faith-based, educational, and rehabilitative programs which allow these individuals to lead productive, crime-free lives," the resolution states. "The RNC urges state legislators and Congress to coordinate with families and faith-based communities, provide substance abuse treatment to addicts, emphasize work and education, and implement policies that cut costs while obtaining better outcomes. " In addition, the GOP resolution calls for "a reevaluation and elimination of excessive government regulation where inadvertent noncompliance has been deemed a criminal offense" - - a first step to reevaluating many low-level drug offenses and property crimes in a move that has been increasingly supported in recent years by conservatives and business and advocacy groups nationwide.

Two young men murdered within hours of each other in Umm al-Fahm Within a matter of hours on Saturday, two young men in Umm el-Fahm were shot dead in separate shootings in the crime-ridden Arab city in the Wadi Ara region. In the first incident, around 5 p.m. police received a call about a man suffering from gunshot wounds in the city’s Al-Bir neighborhood. The victim, later named as Muhammad Agbariya, 26, was taken to Emek Medical Center in Afula, where he later died of his wounds. Around two hours later, Hussein Mahajna, 27, was found shot in the city, and was also rushed in critical condition to the Emek Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Both murders are being investigated by the Coastal District’s central investigative unit. The Coastal District police spokesman said that both victims were known to police and that detectives have not ruled out a connection between the two murders. The spokesman added that no arrests have been made, and that due to a gag order on the case, police cannot provide details about how the murders were carried out, and if the shooters arrived on foot or by vehicle. The murders are the latest in a city that – like communities across the Arab sector – has for years suffered from a disproportionately high rate of violent crime. Earlier this month, the Israel Police appointed a Muslim officer – Jamal Hachrush – to the rank of assistant-chief, the second highest on the force and the highest rank ever held by a Muslim. Hachrush will be tasked with running a new branch of the police that will deal specifically with the problems facing the Arab public. The branch, which has yet to be launched, is part of a multiyear multi-billion shekel plan by police to open 10 new police stations in Arab communities and to recruit 1,300 more Arab police officers. Hachrush’s promotion was first announced by Police Commissioner Insp.-Gen. Roni Alsheich during a Knesset committee meeting in February, in which he said crime in the Arab sector is unacceptable and a source of great suffering for everyday citizens. He also presented figures that illustrate the disproportionately high crime create among Arab Israelis, who make up about 21 percent of the population but account for 59% of murders and 32% of property crimes. Their communities are also overrun by illegal firearms – which, while expensive, are widely available on the black market – and plagued by family disputes, organized crime, and the drug trade.

Scores & Stats NEW YORK -- Brett Gardner's ninth-inning at-bat began with him thinking about getting on first base, stealing second and letting Carlos Beltran drive him in. It evolved to him getting a favorable count and anticipating a fastball. And when Gardner guessed right, the swing turned into a dramatic game-winning home run with two out, giving the New York Yankees a 3-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday. "Not necessarily," Gardner said when asked if he was trying to go deep. "Early in the at-bat, I was thinking about laying a bunt down and trying to steal second and give Carlos a shot at it. "(First baseman Steve) Pearce was kind of playing with me over there a little bit. He started out back and then he came up. I saw him moving in. Once I went 2-1 and then he missed with 3- 1, I felt like I was going to get a fastball to hit. It was just a matter of where. "The where part for Gardner was a fastball by Erasmo Ramirez (4-1) over the plate slightly above the knees. Once Gardner connected, the ball turned landed in the second deck at in right field and touched off a wild celebration at the plate. "If he was going to hit something hard or if a homer was gone, it had to be to the opposite side, but I didn't execute the pitch," Ramirez said. "He was looking for something around the strike zone and hit it as hard as he can and he did. "Gardner's second career home walk-off home run and sixth such hit of his career ensured Beltran along with the rest of the Yankees would be meeting the left fielder at the plate to mob him and celebrate New York's second straight win and seventh in 16 games this season. "He's got pop," Yankees catcher Brian McCann said. "The 2-1 pitch was that whole at-bat. Carlos on deck, everyone knows a fastball's coming. He put a big swing on it and hit it a long way. "Before Gardner's dramatic drive, the Yankees got their first two runs in unconventional ways. New York scored first on a wild pitch by Blake Snell during an at-bat to Alex Rodriguez, who ended the first by getting robbed of a two-run home run by left fielder Desmond Jennings. The Yankees held the lead until the fourth when Corey Dickerson doubled over Gardner's head and Kevin Kiermaier homered off the right field foul pole in the sixth. New York finally got some kind of rally going with two outs in the seventh. With a 2-2 count, Jacoby Ellsbury reached base on catcher's interference for the third time this season. Gardner followed with a hard ground ball that deflected off left-hander Xavier Cedeno's glove and allowed McCann to score the tying run. "It was a little different," Gardner said. "It's not how you would draw it up. But at this point we'll take it any way we can get it. "The Rays unveiled Snell, their top pitching prospect and he did not disappoint. Snell settled in after a shaky first and allowed one run and two hits in five innings. Snell was in line to become the first starting pitcher to win his major league debut in New York since Anibal Sanchez June 25, 2006, for the Florida Marlins. He struck out six and threw 90 pitches. One of those strikeouts was of Rodriguez, whose 1994 debut with the Seattle Mariners came when Snell was a 1-year old. Tampa Bay lost for the 19th time in its last 29 visits to New York and scored three runs or fewer for the 13th time this season. Other than the fourth and sixth, they had little offense against Tanaka. "Offensively, it was a little bit of a, it was a lot of a grind," Rays manager Kevin Cash said. "We just couldn’t quite get anything going off Tanaka. He was really tough, he kept the ball down, and we knew that coming in, but it’s still, it’s still tough to lay off some pitches. "They get the lead, they turn it over to the two big boys and that's how they're going to win ballgames. "NOTES: New York OF Aaron Hicks was unavailable Saturday because of a sore left shoulder he injured trying to make a diving catch in the fourth inning Friday. After the game, manager Joe Girardi said Hicks has bursitis and will be unable to do any activity for four to five days. ... The Rays optioned RHP Danny Farquhar to Triple-A Durham to make room for LHP Blake Snell. It is Tampa Bay's first transactions this season. By their 17th game last season, the Rays had made 22 moves and this is the deepest the team has gone into a season without a transaction since 2007. ... New York RHP Branden Pinder has a partial tear of his UCL and will decide in a few days to undergo Tommy John surgery or rehab the injury. Pinder was placed on the disabled list Friday and the original diagnosis was a strained right elbow.

Upcoming Pisgah Center Offerings By Don Mallicoat- Well, it feels like spring is finally here. Folks are thinking about getting outdoors and there are some great outdoor education opportunities coming up. The N. C. Wildlife Resources Commission is offering 13 outdoors programs in May at the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education in Transylvania County. The events, which are free, are open on a first- come, first-serve basis and pre-registration is required by registering online. We are not going to give details on each of the 13 events here but you can see them all at the Commissions website, www.ncwildlife.org. Go to the Education icon at the top of the page. Here are a few we found interesting. First up is an Introduction to Fly Fishing class on May 7 or 16 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Participants will learn the basics of fly fishing including equipment, knots and casting. You will then spend a couple of hours on the nearby Davidson River. All materials are provided and participants should provide their own lunch. If you are looking for something for the kids, try Nature Nuts: Life Cycles on May 9 or 28. This two hour program will help kids 4 – 7 learn about the interesting life cycles of various critters that call the mountains home. It includes a hike through the forest. Once you have completed the Introduction course you may want to check out On the Water: Davidson River on May 23. Here you will get to practice your newly learned fly-fishing skills under the supervision of experienced instructors. Participants will learn about wading, reading the waters, fly selection, presentation, casting, knots and stream entomology. This one is limited to six anglers ages 12 and up. There are other offerings to include other fishing courses and one on outdoor photography. The Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education is located near Brevard, just south of Asheville, by the Davidson River in Transylvania County. The center features nature trails and five large aquariums representing aquatic mountain habitats. The center is adjacent to the Bobby N. Setzer State Fish Hatchery, where trout are raised in 54 raceways. The center is open Monday through Saturday from April through November and Monday through Friday from December through March. Hours are 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Another popular activity as weather warms is sporting clays shooting. We have noticed increased traffic at the store the last couple of weeks as people are looking at and buying shotguns as they get into the sport. Occasionally a novice clay target shooter will ask about reloading their shotgun shells. I started reloading shotgun shells nearly thirty years ago as a way to save money while shooting. As with many things there has been a change in the market. My advice to anyone getting into sporting clays is to buy commercially produced shells if shooting 12 or 20 gauge. Why? Because of the rise in cost of components, particularly powder and lead shot, it is just as inexpensive to buy standard target loads as it is to reload them; especially if you can get them on sale. There are a couple of exceptions. If you shoot much sub –gauge like 28 and.410 then there is a definite cost savings so load all you can. What are the exceptions? First if you shoot a lot, and I mean several hundred rounds a week, you can buy bulk components at a reduced price and save some money. The other exception is if you want to develop a specific load to fit your gun and the game you are shooting. Here’s an example from my own experience. We took in an old Damascus twist side by side shotgun at the store that is in excellent condition. I want to shoot clays and hunt with it. Since it can’t handle the chamber pressure of modern shot shells, I’ve can purchase vintage shells, load and shoot black powder which are very dirty, or find a low pressure load using smokeless powder and reload my own. I chose the latter. At the same price per round for standard target loads, I’ll be using Alliant Extra-Lite powder pushing a 7/8 ounce load from a Federal paper hull at standard velocity of 1200 fps. The chamber pressure is only 6,100 psi, about half that of a regular target load. So if you are wanting a special load for your target shooting or hunting, shot shell reloading may be the ticket.

The three-vehicle accident happened along Texas 105 East near South Walker Road after 11 a.m. According to Montgomery County Hospital District EMS , two people were killed in the wreck and three others were transported to Conroe Regional Hospital. One of three people transported to the hospital was critically injured. Multiple reports indicate an 18-wheeler carrying lumber turned over in the accident. Two other cars also were involved in the collision. Texas Department of Public Safety troopers and other local officials were at the scene. Handgun carrier fires at vehicle used by thieves A person registered to carry a concealed handgun confronted three men suspected of stealing clothes from a Woodlands sporting goods store, then tried to shoot out the tire of their vehicle as they tried to flee the parking lot, authorities said. The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office said in a news release that the incident occurred about 12:25 p.m. Friday when three men entered the Academy store at 1360 Lake Woodlands and made off with "large amounts of assorted clothing merchandise. " The concealed handgun carrier witnessed the theft, followed the suspects and confronted them. The suspects drove off in a gold Ford minivan that had been reported stolen in Harris County. Authorities said the getaway vehicle crashed into numerous vehicles and a tree in the parking lot. The suspects were able to get away, traveling at a high rate of speed, despite the effort to shoot out a tire. They were still at large Friday evening. Authorities said the license plate on the stolen vehicle was DMH0999.. Teacher accused of exposing self to girl student A Hogg Middle School teacher was arrested and charged with indecent exposure Thursday after allegations that he exposed himself to a student. The suspect allegedly exposed himself to girl walking to another school in the Heights. The Houston ISD employee has been reassigned off campus as police investigate. "HISD takes situations such as this very seriously, as the safety of students is always the district's top priority," school officials wrote in a statement Friday. Teen charged in slaying of good Samaritan A teenager has been accused in the shooting death Friday morning of a good Samaritan who tried to protect a woman during an argument along a street in southwest Houston. Hector Henriquez , 18, is charged with murder in the shooting, which happened about 12:30 a.m. in the 7100 block of Troulon Drive near Lugary Drive, according to the Houston Police Department . Sgt. Kenneth Daignault , an HPD homicide investigator, said the victim was sitting in his parked car when he saw the suspect, later identified as Henriquez, engaged in an argument with woman. The argument possibly turned physical, and the good Samaritan got out of his car and intervened to protect the woman, who was later identified as Henriquez's girlfriend. That's when Henriquez pulled out a gun and shot the victim. The wounded man was rushed to Southwest Memorial Hermann Hospital , where he was pronounced dead. His name has not been released. 31 Probing the cosmos: Is anybody out there? - CNN.com (CNN) -- From a remote valley in Northern California, Jill Tarter is listening to the universe. Her ears are 42 large and sophisticated radio telescopes, spread across several acres, that scan the cosmos for signals of extraterrestrial origin. If intelligent life forms do exist on other planets, and they try to contact us, Tarter will be among the first to know. Are we citizens of Earth alone in the universe? It's a question that has long fascinated astronomers, sci-fi authors, kids with backyard telescopes and Hollywood executives who churn out spectacles about alien encounters. Polls have found that most Americans believe that some form of life exists beyond our planet. "It's a fundamental question," said Tarter, the real-life inspiration for Jodie Foster's character in the 1997 movie "Contact. " "And it's a question that the person on the street can understand. It's not like a... super-collider or some search for neutrinos buried in the ice. It's, 'Are we alone? How might we find out? What does that tell us about ourselves and our place in the universe?' "We're trying to figure out how the universe began, how galaxies and large-scale structures formed, and where did the origins of life as we know it take place? " Tarter said. "These are all valid questions to ask of the universe. And an equally valid question is whether the same thing that happened here [on Earth] has happened elsewhere. " Watch a preview of CNN's "In Search of Aliens" series » Thanks to advancements in technology, scientists hope to get an answer sooner rather than later. Rovers have snapped photographs of the surface of Mars that show fossil-like shapes. NASA hopes to launch within a decade a Terrestrial Planet Finder, an orbiting observatory that would detect planets around nearby stars and determine whether they could support life. Such developments are catnip to scientists like Geoffrey Marcy, a professor of astronomy at the University of California-Berkeley who has discovered more extrasolar planets than anyone else. "It wasn't more than 13 years ago that we hadn't found any planets around the stars, and most people thought that we never would. So here we are not only having found planets, we are looking for habitable planets, signs of biology on those planets," Marcy told CNN. "It's an extraordinary explosion of a field of science that didn't even exist just a few years ago. " Then there's Tarter, whose quest for signs of extraterrestrial life kept her on the fringes of mainstream science for decades. While pursuing her doctorate at UC-Berkeley, Tarter came across an engineering report that floated the idea of using radio telescopes to listen for broadcasts by alien beings. It became her life's work. In 1984 Tarter founded the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute (SETI) in California. Using telescopes in Australia, West Virginia and Puerto Rico, she conducted a decade-long scouring of about 750 nearby star systems for extraterrestrial radio signals. None was found, although Tarter had some false alarms. In 1998, she intercepted a mysterious signal that lasted for hours. Tarter got so excited she misread her own computer results: The signal was coming from a NASA observatory spacecraft orbiting the sun. Today, Tarter listens to the heavens with the Allen Telescope Array, a collection of 20-foot-wide telescopes some 300 miles north of San Francisco. The dish-like scopes are a joint effort of SETI and UC-Berkeley's Radio Astronomy Lab and have been funded largely by Microsoft co- founder Paul Allen, who donated more than $25 million to the project. Unlike previously existing radio telescopes, which scan the sky for limited periods of time, the Allen Telescope Array probes the universe round the clock. Each of the 42 scopes is aimed at a different area of the sky, collecting reams of data that are continually studied by computers for unusual patterns. Then the listeners must filter out noise from airplanes and satellites. "We're listening for something that we don't think can be produced by Mother Nature," Tarter said. "We're using the radio frequency, other people are using optical telescopes... and in both cases we're looking for an artificial nature to a signal. "In the case of radio, we're looking for a lot of power being squished into just one channel on the radio dial. In the optical, they're looking for very bright flashes that last a nanosecond... or less, not slow pulsing kinds of things. To date we've never found a natural source that can do that. " Signals that any extraterrestrials might be transmitting for their own use would be difficult to detect, Tarter said. Astronomers are more likely to discover a radio transmission broadcast intentionally at the Earth, she said. Astronomers at SETI, however, are not sending a signal into space in an attempt to communicate with aliens. University of California professor Marcy is skeptical about the existence of intelligent alien life and believes our galaxy's vast distances would make communication between Earth and beings on other planets almost impossible. "The nearest neighbor might be halfway across our galaxy, 50,000 light-years away. Communicating with them will take a hundred thousand years for a round-trip signal," he said. Still, Tarter remains undaunted. The Allen Telescope Array already does in 10 minutes what once took her scientists 10 days. When the project is completed, it will have 350 telescopes that, combined, can survey tens of thousands of star systems. "We can look in more places and more frequencies faster than we ever could. And that will just get better with time. We're doing something now we couldn't do when we started, we couldn't do five years ago," she said. "Think of it as a cosmic haystack. There's a needle in there somewhere. If you pull out a few straws, are you going to get disappointed because you haven't found the needle yet? No. We haven't really begun to explore. 33 French Jewish leader calls for closure of main BDS bank account NEW YORK – The president of the Representative Council of French Jewish Institutions (CRIF) called for the Credit Mutuel bank to pull the plug on the account of the main anti-Israel BDS group in France. The Jerusalem Post had uncovered the account with the bank of La Campagne BDS France, which targets Israel with economic warfare. Roger Cukierman, the head of CRIF, told the Post on Wednesday that “a boycott [of Israel] is forbidden by law” in France, and said the BDS France account should be closed. France’s 2003 “Lellouche law” bars boycotts based on national origin. French courts have enforced the Lellouche law by fining BDS activists. Frédéric Monot, a spokesman for Credit Mutuel, said, “We do not disclose information covered by banking secrecy, but we strictly respect the application of French law.” BDS France did not immediately respond to a Post query. After the Post exposed its existence in February, BNP Paribas terminated the account of the main BDS group in Germany – BDS Campaign. BDS Campaign had an account with BNP Paribas’s subsidiary DAB Bank in Munich. According to sources in France, BNP Paribas shut the BDS Campaign account because it was in violation of the Lellouche law. A planned New York State anti-boycott law would impact Credit Mutuel’s office in Manhattan. “The New York legislation would certainly adversely affect those banks. In a time of crisis that is growing more acute by the day, Americans and New Yorkers want to stand with our strategic democratic ally Israel and against hatred peddled by the BDS movement,” State Assemblyman Charles Lavine said in early April. A spokesman for Credit Mutuel in New York declined to answer a Post query. Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan said, “We continue to urge all financial institutions to carefully consider the potential legal, reputational and ethical consequences of facilitating the activities of BDS groups.” According Credit Mutuel’s website, it is a “French banking network consisting of 5,390 local cooperatives and mutual funds.” The bank has 7.4 million customers.

'Remarkably high' number of UK profit warnings, research says The number UK companies making profit warnings is "remarkably high" despite a significant downgrade in expectations for earnings, according to a report. Quoted businesses issuing profit warnings hit 76 in the first three months of the year, down from 77 in the same quarter of 2015, the EY profit warnings report found. Meanwhile, the research said the number of firms warning over profits reached 17.2% in the 12 months to the end of the first quarter, up from 16.5% over the same period in 2015. High-profile profit warnings this year include supermarket Tesco, betting giant William Hill, Burberry and Sports Direct. The research said weaker oil prices and slower global growth have "dented" expectations for UK businesses. It added: "The volatile start to 2016 created uncertain and difficult conditions for companies reliant on the contract cycle. Central bank action has soothed market concerns, but the global economy is still struggling to build momentum. "Meanwhile, companies are clearly still coming to terms with the intense competition that comes as a result of overcapacity and disruption across many sectors. " The report found the FTSE sectors leading the profit warnings in the first quarter of this year were support services with nine, general retail with eight and media with seven. Christian Mole, EY retail specialist, said: "We've seen in recent years how rising operational costs and the hard bargain driven by the UK consumer have chipped away at the benefits of rising disposable income and demand. "This year looks no different, with additional challenges and opportunities that will further differentiate between retail's winners and losers. " He added: "Retailers that emerge as the winners will be those who can significantly improve their productivity and remain relevant to customers. "Much of what we have seen in recent years has taken the form of short-term responses to problems of space, price and technology that need long term solutions. Retailers will win market share by being bold with new propositions. "

Final piece of type 1 diabetes puzzle solved A complete picture of the areas that the immune system attacks to cause type 1 diabetes has finally been revealed by scientists. The study, published in the journal Diabetes, discovered the fifth and final critical target at which the immune system errantly takes aim. The team at the University of Lincoln say the findings could help develop new ways to prevent and treat the disease. Diabetes UK said the findings were "impressive". In type 1 diabetes, the immune system destroys the beta cells that make insulin - the hormone needed to keep blood sugar levels under control. Studies looking at the unique antibodies made by patients with type 1 showed there were five key targets that the immune system attacked. But working out exactly what they were has been like identifying someone from their silhouette. Studies long ago discovered some of the targets, but the final one has proved elusive for two decades. Dr Michael Christie, who led the research at the University of Lincoln, told the BBC: "With this new discovery, we have now finished identifying what the immune system is targeting - we have the complete picture. " The targets are: The more technically named ones are largely involved in secreting or storing the hormone insulin. Knowledge of some of these targets is already being used in a trial at King's College London that is aiming to stall the progression of type 1 . But Dr Christie says having the complete picture could help transform care for type 1 patients. He said: "Once the immune system decides it wants to get rid of something it's very hard to stop, so diabetes has proved to be a difficult disease to prevent. "So we're hoping that, by having identified the major targets in the disease, we can find ways to prevent it by blocking the immune response to these five proteins without leaving that person vulnerable to infections. "With recent improvements in our understanding of the disease I'm very hopeful we'll develop a treatment now; I have a lot more confidence than even five years ago. " There are two main types of diabetes - Type 1 diabetes can develop at any age, but usually appears before the age of 40, particularly in childhood. Around 10% of all diabetes is type 1, but it is the most common type of childhood diabetes, so it is sometimes called juvenile diabetes or early-onset diabetes Type 2 diabetes is largely caused by poor lifestyle. Around 90% of adults with diabetes have type 2, and it tends to develop later in life than type 1. Source: NHS Choices Dr Emily Burns, from the charity Diabetes UK, said: "In order to prevent type 1 diabetes, we need to fully understand how the immune response that damages insulin-producing cells develops in the first place. "Dr Christie's impressive research is helping us to do just that. "We hope that the findings here will be used to improve the identification of those at risk of type 1 diabetes and, in the long term, inform the crucial development of therapies. 37 MPs call for junior doctors contract trial A group of cross-party MPs has called on Jeremy Hunt to trial the new junior doctors contract in a small number of trusts in a bid to prevent next week's all-out strike. Labour's Heidi Alexander, Conservative Dr Dan Poulter, Lib Dem Norman Lamb and the SNP's Dr Philippa Whitford told the Health Secretary in a letter that they want an independent evaluation of the so-called "weekend effect" which sees higher mortality rates for patients admitted at weekends. The move comes after the Health Secretary announced he would impose the contested contract, whether or not it had the support of the British Medical Association (BMA). The letter explains that concerns have been raised about the impact of the contract, were it imposed, and said it believed the BMA would not go ahead with next week's strike if the Government agreed to the proposal. A BMA source said that if the Government agreed to limited trials of a pilot of the contract, representatives would be prepared to meet them to discuss the possibility of calling off the strike on Tuesday and Wednesday. The MPs write: "You will be aware that medical leaders, royal colleges and patient groups, have said the imposition or unilateral introduction of the contract is the wrong approach and risks permanent damage to the future of the medical workforce. "If it remains your intention to introduce this new contract, we believe it should be piloted in a number of trusts/across a number of deaneries and for its impact on patients, staff and the "weekend effect" to be independently evaluated. " An evaluation would lead to a "real understanding of the problem" so targeted changes can be made and a pilot would allow for misunderstandings about the contract to be cleared up. The Government said it had 75 meetings with the BMA and three years of talks, and delaying reform further would mean not taking an important step in improving weekend care. A spokesman said: "We have always said that we want to introduce this contract in a phased way - for around 11% of junior doctors from August - precisely so any initial problems can be ironed out. That's why this is simply ill-informed political opportunism from the same Labour Party responsible for the flawed contracts we have now. "

Hansen weighs up All Blacks midfield options WELLINGTON, April 24 (Reuters) - Malakai Fekitoa and Ryan Crotty are likely to get the first crack at cementing a midfield partnership for the All Blacks when they face Wales in June, according to coach Steve Hansen. Hansen needs to develop a new midfield this year after Conrad Smith and Ma'a Nonu ended their international careers following New Zealand's successful World Cup campaign in England last October. "There's no doubt they spent a lot of time together and gave us a powerful combination," Hansen told the Sunday Star Times of the former Wellington duo's international pairing. "It's going to be difficult to find ready-made people but we still have Malakai and Ryan, both have been around a bit. "Malakai has had plenty of opportunity to grow and mature and it's going to be exciting to see how he goes now he's going to be one of the top dogs. "Every time Ryan Crotty has played for the All Blacks he's been outstanding. He's a player in the Conrad Smith mould. He's not X-factor but he's certainly reliable. " Crotty has played 15 tests since his debut in 2013, while Fekitoa, a member of the World Cup squad last year, has 13 test appearances since 2014. Hansen said other players were also in contention, with World Cup winner Sonny Bill Williams likely to be involved later in the year after his Olympic commitments with the All Blacks sevens side finish. Waikato Chiefs inside centre Charlie Ngatai, who made his All Blacks' debut off the bench against Samoa last year, has impressed this year while Auckland Blues' Rieko Ioane, who has been used mostly as a wing, would also be in the equation. "Ngatai is playing really well (and) Rieko Ioane's best position is probably going to be centre. He's going to be involved with the sevens but will be free later in the year," Hansen added. "There's some candidates there we've just got to make sure we pick the right ones and build them; to give them the opportunities Conrad, Ma'a and Sonny had. " (Reporting by Greg Stutchbury; Editing by Peter Rutherford)

Japan's Haru Nomura leads Swinging Skirts LPGA Classic DALY CITY, Calif. (AP) — Haru Nomura shot a 1- under 71 in cool and breezy conditions Saturday at Lake Merced to maintain a three-stroke lead in the Swinging Skirts LPGA Classic. The 23-year- old Japanese player had three birdies and two bogeys to reach 10-under 206 with one round left. She won the Australian Women's Open in February, pulling away to beat top-ranked Lydia Ko by three strokes for her first LPGA Tour title. Ko was six strokes back at 4 under after a 73. The two-time defending champion will be 19 on Sunday. "My game wasn't really up to it today," Ko said. "It was pretty average. But I felt like chipping, short game-wise it was good, but I wasn't making the putts that needed to go in for birdie or those crucial par saves. ... I've just got to stay positive. " South Africa's Lee-Anne Pace and South Korea's Na Yeon Choi were tied for second. Pace had a 69. She won a 2014 event in China for her lone LPGA Tour title. "Obviously, the conditions are going to be the same tomorrow probably, a little cooler, I think," Pace said. "But just the same thing. On a course like this you have to play on the right side. You have to stay below the hole keep it in the fairway and on the greens. " Choi shot 71. She won twice last year and has nine LPGA Tour victories. "It was tough," Choi said. "I think especially the greens were so firm and a lot of holes have front pins, so it's hard to stop the ball around the pin. ... I like chasing, so I feel great about this tournament and this week and about my game. I have confidence, so just keep playing aggressive. " So Yeon Ryu was 5 under along with Brooke Henderson, Catriona Matthew and Gerina Piller. Ryu, the first-round leader after a tournament- record 63, followed a second-round 75 with a 73. Henderson has seven straight top-10 finishes. The 18-year-old Canadian chipped in for birdie on the par-5 18th for a 69. "I kind of mis-hit my approach shot there, but was able to come back with a nice chip-in and make the day feel a little bit better than it was," Henderson said. "I'm really close and my game is close to being really good. I just have to stay patient and keep doing what I'm doing. " The 46-year-old Matthew shot a 71, and Piller had a 72. "It was really hard," Piller said. "The pins were a lot tougher today. They put a lot of them on the front, and the course is firming up again. Yesterday it was pretty soft with the rains. But front pins make it pretty difficult to get it close. And the wind, you've got to accommodate for the wind, accommodate for the cold, so it just makes it a tough day. " Minjee Lee also was 4 under after a 74. The 2012 U. S. Girls' Junior champion at Lake Merced, the Australian won last week in Hawaii for her second LPGA Tour title.

Watford have history of writing fairy tales in FA Cup semi-finals There are not many people who can say they have played in an FA Cup semi-final, fewer still who were in goal and Gary Plumley is the only one of them who came out of retirement for a one- off game to do so. The former goalkeeper, now 60, had set his gloves aside to focus on running Romans wine bar he had opened in Caerleon, Wales, when he received a phone call on the landline — this is 1987 — from his father, Eddie Plumley, who was chief executive of Watford. Watford’s No 1 Tony Coton had broken a thumb and was out of their upcoming semi-final against Tottenham, Eddie told his son, and manager wondered if he would sign some forms as a back-up. ‘We joked that you’d never lose two goalkeepers in a fortnight,’ Plumley recalls. There were few goalkeepers around who were not at a club but of the required quality to step in unlikely scenario they were needed. Taylor asked Pat Jennings, but he politely declined, and Plumley had spent the majority of his career at Newport County, where he played in a Cup Winners’ Cup quarter-final in 1981, and was on the books at Leicester, where he trained with Peter Shilton, as a youngster, so had the requisite experience. Watford’s No 2 Steve Sherwood played in goal for the two games leading up to the Spurs match, but four days before kick off he dislocated his thumb. An 18-year-old David James was at the club but Taylor would not risk destroying his confidence in such a major fixture, so Plumley, who had remained in Wales not expecting to play a part, received his second unexpected phone call at Romans from his father in the space of a week. ‘As soon as he told me, I jumped in my car and drove home — but no- one was there,’ Plumley says. ‘My wife Debbie was with my mother-in-law. This was the days before mobile phones, so I left a note on the kitchen table and left for Watford. ‘At Hilton Park services I rang home from a phone box and Debbie had found the note by then. She asked what I was doing there. I explained. “Come off it,” she said. “Where are you really?” This went on for a while. Beep-beep-beep, the pips went and I’d used up my money. She saw the newspapers the next day and realised I was telling the truth.’ It was the biggest story in football for a few days and I show Plumley the video of a Thames News report on his propulsion to Watford’s goalkeeper. ‘That’s not me, surely,’ he says of his 31-year-old mullet and moustachioed self, resplendent in full Watford tracksuit, being interviewed on the six o’clock news show. ‘That brings back some memories, crikey. I’ve still got an old video somewhere with all the clips and news stories. I’d have to find a VHS player that still works to watch it back.’ Plumley remembers it fondly, but this fairytale had a bitter ending for Watford’s supporters. A Spurs team including Glenn Hoddle, Chris Waddle, Ossie Ardiles and Clive Allen played them off the park and won 4-1. Plumley is shown another video of the highlights and winces at the first as he spills Allen’s shot into the path of Steve Hodge who scores. ‘When he hit it, it moved in the air, it swerved, I tried to trap it next to my body,’ Plumley says. The second is a humongous deflection off a defender from another long-range Allen effort. ‘Bloody hell, there’s nothing you can do about that.’ At this stage he adds: ‘I think my wife hid the video.’ The third, from Paul Allen, beats him at a near post, but is a powerful strike. ‘I’ve seen goals scored like that all the time.’ The final strike is a wonderful team move finished by Hodge again. Plumley cannot recall that one from memory, but watching it back remarks: ‘Fabulous. What a side they had. If we were still playing now we wouldn’t have beaten them.’ Plumley wishes he had glanced up at the 41,000 filling Villa Park, or had a picture with one of the overflowing stands behind him. But he was so focused on the game it is a blur. Afterwards, Spurs goalkeeper Ray Clemence ran the length of the pitch and put an arm around his shoulder. Ardiles came into the dressing room to shake his hand. Elton John, Watford chairman at the time, also came in and spoke to him. ‘He was as glum as everybody else. No- one was really saying much,’ Plumley remembers. ‘I knew him a little before because when dad joined Watford as chief executive every year Elton had a marquee on the lawn of his house and a party for the players and their wives and kids. It was fantastic. ‘We went to this garden party and stayed overnight at his house. As the day wore on and the families started leaving it was only Elton and his manager and PA and my family that were left and Graham and his wife Rita and their girls. ‘Elton said to me: “Do you play squash?” Yes, I replied. “Are you any good?” I’m OK. “Fancy a game?” He had a squash court in the house. ‘This was bloody bizarre. It’s 12 o’clock at night. I was thinking I’d better go to bed. “Come on,” he says, “let’s have a game". I beat him the first game so he says best of three. I said how about we have a side bet — if I beat you I’ll take one of those Ferraris in your garage. He had a number of cars. I beat him again. I still didn’t get the Ferrari!’ He did, however, receive recompense, indirectly from Elton John’s pockets, for his FA Cup cameo and the club sent him a cheque for £250 a few weeks afterwards. Plumley spent it on a fridge, which his family refer to as the Watford fridge. It is still going. Plumley’s nephew James, 28, is a Watford fan and they attend games together. ‘He says I’m lucky it was only four,’ Plumley says, laughing. Watford goalkeeper has been arguably their best player this season. But if he and Costel Pantilimon and their remaining goalkeepers were injured, would Plumley answer the call again? ‘I can’t find my boots, I don't think my back would allow me, and I’m not fit anymore,’ is his resounding response. ‘A question I get asked is if I’d go back and relive it and do it again. The answer will always be yes. There aren’t many people who can say they have played in the semi-final of an FA Cup.’

Israeli victims of Brussels bombing leave hospital in time for Passover Chaim Winternitz will never forget the twin blasts that shook Brussels’s Zaventem Airport on March 22, leaving him paralyzed with 17 shrapnel wounds across his entire body, a broken leg and damaged hearing. Last week, barely a month later, the 28-year-old Jerusalem man left Hadassah-University Medical Center’s orthopedic department in Ein Kerem to celebrate Passover with his wife and five children. Winternitz, who will begin a lengthy process of physical therapy at the hospital after the holiday, credits the Jerusalem- based charity Saad V’Marpe for its assistance. The organization, founded in 1997 by Chaim Mordechai “Motti” Fried, the father of seven and a Belgium native who made aliya 20 years ago, seeks out the wounded and the infirm, and provides them help including paying for medication, filling out medical forms, and paying for transportation to and from treatment. On most days, Fried walks the corridors of hospitals like Shaare Zedek Medical Center and Hadassah looking for patients to assist. But March 23 – the day after the Brussels attacks – he flew to Amsterdam and then drove to Brussels, looking for Israelis wounded in the explosions. Ten days later he flew Winternitz and his brother, Mendel, on a private plane back to Israel. While Chaim will return to Hadassah for physical therapy, Mendel – who suffered severe burns in the attack – also faces a long period of ongoing treatment at Hadassah after the Passover holiday. The brothers were part of a group of 20 Belz Hassidim from Belgium and Israel who were at the airport during the attack. Fried praised the medical attention in Belgium, but said “the care given to trauma and terrorism victims at Hadassah, I think, can’t be compared to anywhere else in the world.” Fried said this was the first time in the organization’s two decades of service that it has flown abroad to bring terrorism victims back to Israel for treatment. “For 20 years we have been helping people in emergency situations. In cases where it happens outside the country, we have to help our brothers”, he said. Chaim Winternitz thanked Fried and Saad V’Marpe. “There aren’t enough words to explain what he did for me and for us. From the big things to the little ones also.”

NHL-Ducks deliver 5-2 win over Predators April 23 (The Sports Xchange) - David Perron and Sami Vatanen each had a goal and an assist to lead the Anaheim Ducks to a 5-2 win over the Nashville Predators in the fifth game of the Stanley Cup Western Conference quarterfinals Saturday. Ryan Garbutt, Cam Fowler and Ryan Kesler also scored, Ryan Getzlaf and Jakob Silfverberg contributed two assists apiece, and goalie Frederik Anderson stopped 27 shots for his third successive playoff victory, giving the Ducks a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series as they return to Nashville for Game Six on Thursday night. Ryan Johansen and Miikka Salomaki scored their first playoff goals for the Predators, who received 27 saves from goalie Pekka Rinne. Garbutt broke a 1-1 tie with his fourth career playoff goal at 16:23 of the second period. After winning the puck from Predators' Shea Weber and Mike Fisher in the left corner, Garbutt whacked it between a lunging Rinne and the right post for his first goal of the series. Vatanen extended the lead to two goals at 8:34 of the final period, seconds after leaving the penalty box for hooking. Jakob Silfverberg freed Vatanen for a breakaway, and Vatanen fired a wrist shot under the crossbar for his first playoff goal. Salomaki used his first career playoff goal to narrow the margin with 6:31 to play. Weber fired a slap shot that hit Salomaki, who swept the deflection inside the left post. But Fowler responded with a power-play goal 11 seconds after Mike Ribeiro received a slashing penalty. Fowler powered a slap shot from the top of the slot inside the right post with 3:21 remaining. Kesler's empty-net goal ended the scoring with 1:46 left. Johansen gave Nashville a 1-0 lead 14:13 into the second period before Perron tied the score 22 seconds later. Anaheim defenseman Simon Despres secured a loose puck in his own end but slipped while the Predators' Colin Wilson was checking him from behind. Wilson retrieved the puck in the left corner and passed to Johansen, who flipped a backhand under the crossbar for his first point since Game One. But at 14:35, Perron fired a slap shot from the blue line near the right boards that deflected off the left ankle of Nashville defenseman Roman Josi. The puck ricocheted so high that Rinne leaped to try to grab it. But the puck wobbled tantalizingly over his glove. Perron's goal was his first in the playoff in four years and the third of his career. Both goalies made crucial saves early. With 2:16 gone in the game, Rinne stopped Corey Perry twice while the Predators were short-handed. Rinne used his left leg pad to stop Perry's shot near the left post before blocking Perry's attempt to convert the rebound. Then with 8:11 left in the first period, Andersen made a lunging glove save on Josi's slap shot after Josi received Viktor Arvidsson's pass during a 2-on-1 breakaway. In the second period, Andersen's kick save foiled Josi, who spun to avoid a check from defenseman Cam Fowler before faking to his backhand and shooting 4:40 into the period. Eight minutes into the period, Nashville defenseman Mattias Ekholm shoveled a backhanded shot from the top of the slot that hit the crossbar and bounced over the glass. About 15 seconds later, Rinne made a pad save against Ryan Kesler's wrist shot on a breakaway from the right wing. (Editing by Peter Rutherford)

Loophole allowing non-parole prisoners out early to be closed by plan A loophole that potentially allows some of Australia's most notorious criminals to be freed from jail so they can be placed in aged care could be would be closed under a new proposal. Plans are being considered to build a specialist 'aged care facility' for criminals serving life sentences without parole, which would stop prisoners applying for early release once they reach an age where more care in required. The dedicated centre would house Australia's worst criminals, such as serial backpacker murderer Ivan Milat, and killers Allan Baker and Kevin Crump, and could be located in Sydney, according to the Sunday Telegraph. Victims of Crime Assistance League vice-president Howard Brown told the newspaper building a special location would ensure people serving life sentences 'die in custody'. 'If a prison doesn’t have the capacity to provide adequate care, they do have the capacity to seek release,' Mr Brown said. 'The victims of these horrendous crimes just want to ensure that person dies in custody.' The newspaper also claims either Crump or Baker, who were jailed for the rape, torture and murder of Virginia Morse in 1973, had recently written a letter seeking early release. One of the two men pleaded with a parliamentary committee to live out their final days 'in the garden'. Under the current system, prisoners who are overly frail or ill are sent to a hospital unit at Long Bay Correctional Centre in Sydney's south. Daily Mail Australia contacted the NSW Department of Corrective Services for comment.

W-18 hits street-drug market: 10,000 times stronger than morphine Adolphe Joseph, 34, of Miramar, Florida, was sentenced to ten years and one month in federal prison in March after admitting he had fentanyl shipped to from China, according to the Sun Sentinel. But Joseph also had vast quantities of another drug found at his home that did not fall under the sentence. Prosecutor Anita White told the judge that law enforcement found more than 2.5 pounds of W-18 when they searched his home. It was unclear who supplied it to him. White told the judge: 'It kills people' and added that it was troubling Joseph had the drug. But Joseph's lawyer Zeljka Bozanic urged the judge to disregard the W-18: 'It's not a crime to have it, at this point.' Speaking on 4/20 day this year, Canada's Health Minister Jane Philpott said: 'One of the biggest challenges right now in Canada is the fentanyl problem — that is one of the areas where we are seeing the most dramatic rises. 'There are other new drugs that have recently come to our attention in the Canadian scene. One is something called W-18 which we are very concerned about. Those are probably some of the biggest concerns on our radar.' No tests are currently available to detect W-18 in the blood or urine, which means that it may well have been partly responsible for the escalating deaths attributed to heroin seen across North America. Its incredible potency is noted even among seasoned drug users. A man identified as Trippman on Bluelight.org , an international message board that educates the public about responsible drug use, comments: 'I don't think any sane drug user would ever consider playing with this substance. 'Sounds incredibly dangerous, even for those with opioid tolerances.' Scientists at the University of Alberta developed W-18 in the 1980s as a potential painkiller, though it and other strains in the 'W' series, which ran from W-1 to W-32, have since been used mainly for research. Out of the 32 varieties of the drug, W-18 is the strongest, according to CBS.

New Zealand's Savea withdraws from Olympic contention WELLINGTON, April 24 (Reuters) - New Zealand's rugby sevens side suffered a major blow in their preparations for the Rio Olympics after loose forward Ardie Savea opted to withdraw from contention in order to concentrate on the 15-man game. The 22-year-old openside flanker had played in two tournaments in the sevens World Series in Wellington and Sydney before returning to Super Rugby duty with the Hurricanes. Savea had been expected to be available for the final two tournaments in Paris and London next month, which would have ruled him out of Super Rugby for at least a month, but New Zealand Rugby said on Sunday he would not vie for selection. "We're naturally disappointed that we can no longer call on the services of such a great sevens player," said NZR's general manager for rugby Neil Sorensen. "He could well have made a huge impact at Rio as he's a classy player and he proved that again in Wellington and Sydney. However, we understand his reasons. "As we said from the outset of our Rio programme, playing sevens was very much a personal choice for players. " Savea was impressive in his two tournament appearances for the All Blacks sevens side, proving a handful at the breakdown in securing turnover ball. His ability to break tackles and run with the pace of a back was also important for the team. New Zealand won both the Wellington and Sydney tournaments in which they had all of their Super Rugby players available. They also won the Vancouver tournament with sevens specialists, though have struggled to dominate the tackle area without the Super Rugby players, who are typically bigger due to the greater contact in the 15-man game. The express pace of players from the United States and South Africa has also left them exposed out wide at times, while they have also been hit hard by injuries with at least five core members having problems ahead of Rio. Fiji lead the World Series on 147 points, having also won three tournaments. South Africa are second on 139 with New Zealand third on 135 points. Kenya won the latest stop on the 10-city circuit in Singapore last week. It was their first tournament victory. (Reporting by Greg Stutchbury, Editing by Peter Rutherford)

Kerry Katona is planning a new tattoo in honour of the late David Gest They had been close pals for ten years. And Kerry Katona is reportedly planning to get a tattoo honouring the late David Gest, 62, who passed away earlier this month. The 35-year-old has struggled with the showbiz legend's sudden passing and is said to be designing a special tribute to her close pal. Scroll down for video A source told the Daily Star : 'They were so close and spoke on the phone nearly every day. Kerry has said that she wants to create something to remember him by. 'She is thinking of having a cross on her back, because David was mad about them and loved the symbol, so she thinks that would be a fitting tribute.' The former Atomic Kitten singer struggled to contain her emotion during an appearance on ITV's This Morning shortly after his passing. 'David Gest was my bestest friend in the whole wide world for the last ten years… Gobsmacked. David was like Peter Pan… he was an 18 year old in a 62 year old body,' she recalled. 'I’ve had some of my most amazing memories and experiences because of David. He took me to Memphis for twelve days… and the shock of losing David, it’s been a massive shock to us all. 'And I’m absolutely and utterly devastated and I keep thinking he’s going to ring up and say it’s a joke… he’d ring me at least twice a week,' she said of David, who famously gave her etiquette lessons in 2012's My Fair Kerry. Gest was also a huge part of her children's lives which inevitably led Kerry to make the decision to get herself inked. Currently, Kerry has tattoos of her children Molly, Lilly, Max, Heidi and Dylan-Jorge, as well as a number of other inkings, including a large rose on her shoulder. She also has a tattoo of her third ex- husband George Kay's initials which she plans on getting removed. Previously, Kerry had also mentioned that she wanted David to officiate at her wedding to her now estranged beau George. Police and paramedics were called to the luxury Four Seasons Hotel in Canary Wharf where David was staying at around 10.20am on Tuesday last week. David was believed to have been suffering from pneumonia and high blood pressure, with one friend claiming he was disorientated from the drugs. The insider told the Daily Mirror : 'He seemed strung out and went off the radar at times. He was taking some really strong medication because he was suffering from nasty chest problems that just wouldn’t go away.' 'He also suffered from high blood pressure, which he had special tablets for, and had been on sleeping pills for years because he suffered from insomnia – he always slept at weird times.'

Earth Day: Subic corals are nursed back to life SUBIC BAY FREEPORT—To mark Earth Day here on Friday, a nongovernment organization (NGO) took to the seas. Sangkalikasan Producers Cooperative has spearheaded efforts to nurse coral reefs back to health in Subic Bay, one of nine sites in the country where the NGO would carry out coral transplantation techniques under the reef restoration program of the government. Restoring coral reefs damaged by destructive fishing activities and pollution would “contribute directly to the protection of coastal communities,” said Sangkalikasan project leader Jose Ramirez. By “providing natural barriers, (the reefs improve) our marine ecosystem services, develop fishery resources, and enhance our underwater tourism industry,” he added. According to Ramirez, “coral reefs sustain marine life and are the most diverse ecosystem on Earth.” Funded by the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research Development of the Department of Science and Technology, the coral restoration in Subic Bay would serve as a model project for beach resorts and coastal communities in the country, the project leader said. Ramirez said the group has partnered with All Hands Beach Resort to restore the damaged coral reefs after Grande Island Resort closed down in late 2015. “The coral restoration in Subic Bay began in August last year. We set up coral nursery units (CNUs) and collected coral fragments found around Grande Island Resort,” Ramirez said, adding that the fragments are attached to the CNU for quick recovery and regeneration. The process also increases the coral’s survival rates upon transplantation in degraded reef sites. Sustainable fisheries The program uses asexually reproduced corals to roll out coral transplantation technology meant to improve the productivity of coral resources for sustainable fisheries. “After Grande Island’s closure, accessing the established CNUs was a great challenge. We had to look for a place where the corals we were nursing could adapt to the water’s right temperature and cleanliness,” Ramirez said. The search led Ramirez’s team to All Hands Beach Resort, which is also known for its marine life conservation activities. In Subic Bay, Sangkalikasan has transplanted a CNU in a 75-square-meter area of water about 490 meters away from the shoreline of the beach resort. There are 10,000 coral fragments being revived in the project site. So far, the program has established 538 CNUs and transplanted 487,158 coral fragments. A single CNU, which is made of metal frame, is designed to hold 500 coral fragments and can be used several times a year. The CNU design and the coral transplantation technique use marine epoxy, clay, nails and cable tie. RELATED STORIES Discovering Subic Bay’s hidden coves Experience aquadventure on pink isles

Party Spurns US Senate Candidate Who Almost Won in 2010 Democrat Joe Sestak came tantalizingly close to winning a seat in the U. S. Senate six years ago and is hoping Tuesday to secure a rematch, but the party establishment wants nothing to do with him, pouring millions into the campaign of his chief rival. The former two-term congressman and retired Navy rear admiral is wearing his outsider status as a badge of honor as he seeks the nomination to take on Republican Sen. Pat Toomey this fall in a race that could tilt control of the Senate. He has said that he is fighting "for the soul of the Democratic Party," and that political party leaders "aren't in it for people any longer, they're in it for power and themselves. " "I'm not a politician," he said when the candidates were asked at a Friday debate if they would represent a break with the status quo. "Four-and-a-half million dollars — half of it by my own Democratic Party — has been put in against me," he said. Party-endorsed candidate Katie McGinty focused instead on the Republican incumbent. "I'll do something very different from what Pat Toomey has done. Pat Toomey has sold out the middle class," she said. McGinty, a former state and federal environmental policy official, has trumpeted the broad range of support she has received, from President Barack Obama to Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid to former Gov. Ed Rendell. At the same time she has sought to tap anti-establishment sentiment by looking to the general election. Sestak's frosty relationship with party leaders dates to 2009 when he was recruited to challenge then-Republican Sen. Arlen Specter, then was asked to step aside when Specter switched parties to the delight of Democratic Party leaders. But Sestak refused to drop out — even after former President Bill Clinton was recruited to dangle a government job offer in front of him. Sestak went on to beat Specter in the primary and lose to Toomey by only 2 percentage points in the 2010 general election, upsetting the Democrats' plans for regaining the seat in a state where they outnumber Republicans 4-to-3. Sestak again doesn't figure into the Democrats' plan. The resulting tension has shaped a race in which McGinty's side has outspent Sestak's two-to- one. She has been aided by nearly $2 million from a national party committee and $1.75 million from Washington-based Emily's List, which backs female candidates who support abortion rights. Despite the fundraising disadvantage, the 64-year-old Sestak has led nearly every independent poll. But a large bloc of undecided voters — nearly one in three, according to a new Franklin and Marshall College poll — is adding uncertainty to Tuesday's election. Sestak spent the last six years as a regular on the local party event circuit around Pennsylvania, earning loyalty from rank-and-file activists. He also walked across the state last year to kick off his campaign. The party's search for an alternative candidate ended last summer when it tapped McGinty, 52, a member of Gov. Tom Wolf's administration who had also worked for Al Gore, Bill Clinton and former Gov. Ed Rendell. She has run a radio ad voiced by Obama and Vice President Joe Biden made a campaign stop for her in Pittsburgh. McGinty said in one TV ad that Obama endorsed her "because he knows I'm a fighter. " She has drummed out that theme in her ads, presenting herself as a champion for the middle class and women's causes, the 9th of 10 children of a Philadelphia cop and a diner waitress. In recent days, her campaign and Emily's List have also aired attack ads against Sestak. Sestak has leaned on his military service and touted endorsements by two of the state's largest newspapers, The Philadelphia Inquirer and Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He has also told the story of his young daughter's successful fight with brain cancer as his motivation for running for Congress in 2006 and backing Obama's signature 2010 health care law. One wild card is how a third candidate, John Fetterman, will affect the race, even though he trails badly in the polls and fundraising. He's best-known in western Pennsylvania, where he is the 46-year-old mayor of the impoverished steel town of Braddock, about 10 miles outside Pittsburgh. He is 6-foot-8, scowling, bald and tattooed, and his liberal and unconventional campaign — he has dropped in on bars, rock music venues and hookah lounges — has won over some younger voters. A semiretired owner of a spring manufacturing shop, Joe Vodvarka, was also added back on the ballot in recent days after a dispute in court over whether he had submitted enough signatures. His family has run his low-profile campaign. ——— Associated Press writer Errin Haines Whack in Philadelphia contributed to this report. ——— Follow Marc Levy on Twitter at www.twitter.com/timelywriter. 57 Blake Shelton plays family man with girlfriend Gwen Stefani and sons Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani have been inseparable since they began dating in November. And the relationship is already a very serious one, as the country crooner has also been devoting a lot of time to his girlfriend's three sons - Kingston, nine, Zuma, seven and two-year- old Apollo. Playing the picture perfect family man, the 39-year-old spent an afternoon with the busy mom and her brood of boys in Los Angeles. The Make Me Like You songstress had her hands full as she carried Apollo in one hand while staying glued to her phone with the other. But the multi- tasking mom took it all in her stride, and looked happy and relaxed. Their marriage broke up amidst reports that Rossdale had been cheating on Gwen with their children's nanny, Mindy Mann. Stefani sat down with the New York Times last month to promote her solo album and dropped a heavy hint that there was indeed scandal at the heart of her divorce. 'If I could, I would just tell you everything, and you would just be in shock. It’s a really good, juicy story,' she said. Gwen wouldn't be drawn on any more details except to acknowledge that separating from the father of her three children after 13 years of marriage left her in despair. Recalling how she felt at the time, she told the Times: 'I’m gonna die. I am dead, actually. How do I save myself? What am I going to do? How do I not go down like this?' In the end, it was music that saved her. 'I have to make music out of this. That’s what God wants for me,' she said she thought as she contemplated her life going forward. Being offered a gig as a judge on The Voice helped provide a new focus, as did the friendship and ultimately new romance with fellow judge Shelton, who split from wife Miranda Lambert last summer. She now only gets to be with her boys 50 percent of the time, something she describes as 'the most unjust, unbelievable system.' Meanwhile, Mindy Mann, the Australian nanny said to be behind Stefani's marriage breakup, is pregnant with a baby boy. Mann worked for Stefani and Rossdale from 2008 until last year.

I was a slave basically and used to get beaten all the time.' The talented dancer explained that he survived on rotten fruit from market stalls, and was forced to endure snowy conditions without even a coat to keep him warm. 'I got the feeling that no one wanted me at all,' he said. Ian revealed that one night when he was sleeping rough in Barnsley South Yorks he was attacked by strangers. He said: 'Two guys offered me a warm room and I was naive and said yes and they raped me. I didn’t go to the police because I didn’t want my mum and dad to find me. 'These things are haunting. They don’t go away. I’ve had therapy and tried to commit suicide but my point is don’t give up. I want to inspire people to realise you are never too old to achieve your dreams.' MailOnline have contacted a representative for Britain's Got Talent for comment. And the star came slightly closer to achieving his fantasy as he wowed the judges and crowds alike with his audition on Britian's Got Talent. Joined by his wife Ann, the couple - who have been married for 44 years - shook their hips to a jazz version of Beyonce's Crazy In Love, before winning over the crowds with their bold and age-defying dance moves. Racing around the stage with the vigour of a couple half their age, Ian, and Anne, 61, even had the judges on their feet as David, Alesha Dixon and Amanda Holden mirrored the pair's dance moves. Introducing their performance by explaining that the song choice was about their lives, the former military personnel also had the audience at home on their side, with David cheekily tweeting: 'These two remind me of @simoncowell and I.' The couple, who knew each other for just ten days before they decided to get married, didn't have long to anxiously await their fate as David soon sprinted across the judges table to hit the golden buzzer. Having spent the majority of the performance dancing on the table, the funnyman had no trouble reaching over and stomping on the button in glee, whilst the other judges smiled and laughed along at the spectacle. Even Simon was won over by the fun-loving couple as he piped up: 'I knew David was going to do that, but actually for once, I get it. 'It’s acts like you that make me love this show and love this country.' David added: 'I think you really are the spirit of Britain’s Got Talent. You’ve spent your whole lives doing something else, you have this beautiful relationship... and you picked a Beyonce song for no apparent reason.' Simon is now the only only judge yet to hit the golden buzzer, whilst Ant and Dec have also failed to do the honours. Amanda chose 12-year-old singer Beau McDermott as her act, whilst Alesha opted for the choir, 100 Voices of Gospel.

Queen’s letter describing falling in love sells for £14,400 A letter written by the Queen describing how, as a young princess, she was smitten with a naval cadet who was to become her husband has sold at auction for £14,400. The two-page letter was penned in 1947 by the then Princess Elizabeth and sent to Betty Shew, who was writing a book about the couple’s wedding, Sky News reported. By then she was 21 years old and the letter describes how their romance blossomed dancing at Quaglino’s and Ciro’s two London night clubs. The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh have been married for more than 68 years. "The first time I remember meeting Philip was at the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth , in July 1939, just before the war. (We may have met before at the coronation or the Duchess of Kent's wedding, but I don't remember). "I was 13 years of age and he was 18 and a cadet just due to leave. He joined the Navy at the outbreak of war, and I only saw him very occasionally when he was on leave - I suppose about twice in three years. "Then when his uncle and aunt, Lord and Lady Mountbatten, were away he spent various weekends away with us at Windsor. Then he went to the Pacific and Far East for two years as everyone there will know,” she wrote. "We first started seeing more of each other when Philip went for a two-year job to the R. N Petty Officers School at Corsham - before that we hardly knew each other. "He'd spend weekends with us, and when the school was closed he spent six weeks at Balmoral - it was great luck his getting a short job first them!” The letter, which was written on headed notepaper with the royal crest, was sold to a private collector at a sale at Chippenham Auction Rooms Rooms in Wiltshire.

PETER HITCHENS: America isn't our special friend. It ruined us Now will we grasp that the United States is not our friend, but a foreign country whose interests are often different from ours? President Obama’s blatant intervention in our internal affairs is not a sudden breach of a soppy ‘special relationship’. The USA’s only real special relationship is with Saudi Arabia, a 70-year-old hard pact of oil, money and power, welded together with such cynicism it ought to make us gasp. Barack Obama’s open desire for us to stay inside the EU is by no means the first or worst example of White House meddling here in these islands. Bill Clinton forced us to cave in to the Provisional IRA in 1998 and his successor, George W. Bush, continued the policy by making us do Sinn Fein’s bidding afterwards. Washington came close to scuppering our recapture of the F alklands in 1982. And with the current state of our Armed Forces, which can nowadays do nothing without American support, I often wonder how the White House and the Pentagon would behave if Argentina once again seized Port Stanley. If anyone thinks Hillary Clinton is a great friend of Britain, they’re in for a big surprise. But surely the Americans fought with us shoulder to shoulder against the Kaiser and Hitler? Not exactly. The USA (quite rightly) fought for its own interest in both great wars, not for us. When we ran out of money after the First World War, Washington seized the chance to force us to limit our Navy, and so began to overtake us as the world’s major naval power. We had feared Germany would do this. It is one of the great ironies of history that it was the USA that ended British sea power. In the blackest months of the Second World War, just after the fall of France, the US Congress demanded almost every penny we owned before it would authorise the famous Lend- Lease programme. Secret convoys of Royal Navy warships carried our reserves of gold bullion (estimated to have been worth £26 billion in today’s values) across the Atlantic – mostly never to return. Billions in negotiable securities went the same way, and British assets in the USA were sold off at absurdly low prices. I don’t blame the Americans for this. In 1934, Britain had defaulted on her giant First World War debt to the USA. This is now worth up to £225 billion in today’s money, depending on how you calculate inflation. We still haven’t paid it off, and never will, though it’s not considered polite to discuss it and it’s one of those facts so grotesque that most people refuse to believe it when first told of it. During the Hitler war, the USA gave us enough aid to stay in the fight, but not enough to recover our former economic strength. The eventual peace was made on American terms, and Soviet terms, with us as onlookers. And after the war, Marshall Aid came with strings – open up the British Empire to outside trade, and then begin to dismantle it. Not wanting to get embroiled in any more European wars, the USA also put a lot of effort into creating a permanently united Europe. Documents came to light in the 1990s, probably by accident, showing detailed CIA involvement in the European Movement. I regard America’s behaviour as perfectly reasonable. It’s the sort of thing we used to do when we were top nation, and had more sense than to squander our wealth on idealistic foreign wars. I like America and Americans, lived there happily for two fascinating years, and wish them well. But I never forget that the USA is another country, not a friend or even a cousin. Nor should you. BRILLIANT HELEN IN THE FRONT LINE OF AN IMMORAL WAR Best film of the year so far is Eye In The Sky in which Helen Mirren, in beautifully tailored camouflage, plays a British Army colonel trying to decide whether to launch a deadly drone strike on a terrorist safe house in Africa. The late and much lamented Alan Rickman, in his last on-screen role, plays a red-tabbed general who has to deal with the politicians and their dithering. The target house is crammed with front-rank terrorist commanders. But just outside it sits an innocent little girl, selling loaves of bread. What do you do? I won’t tell you what they do, but I am surprised we’re not much more worried about this form of warfare. Victims of ordinary bombing from the air are famously angered and frustrated by being subjected to an attack to which there is no defence. But this is much more alarming. A woman at a desk in Nevada, by squeezing a trigger, can (without any risk to herself) obliterate or dismember another human being thousands of miles away, tearing them to shreds or dissolving them in a lake of fire. An older generation than mine would have mumbled in mild tones ‘That’s not cricket!’ But today’s ruthless anti-terror macho man will reply: ‘We’re dealing with terrorists. The rules have changed. You can’t use chivalry when fighting with such people.’ Bystanders will see these attacks for themselves, or may be scorched or wounded by them. It is more than possible, for it happened to a wedding party in Yemen in December 2013, that entirely innocent people will be vaporised by mistake. Will their relatives be more or less likely to turn against us, once they have witnessed such events? Precisely because it is so risk-free to us, it is outrageous and infuriating to those who see it on their own streets, who will feel as if we are treating them as insects to be casually swatted. No doubt it will allow us to kill, by remote control, all kinds of people we don’t like. But is this moral? Would we send someone to walk up to them in the street and shoot them without warning or any kind of judicial process? And would we accept it if a foreign power launched such attacks on our soil? I find it especially interesting that governments (such as ours) which sniffily refuse to execute convicted murderers, and so defend us from armed violence, are content to support this form of warfare. How can arbitrary killing from the sky be right, and execution after a fair trial be wrong? Glad as I am to see the long-delayed decision to support some of what’s left of our steel industry, I grind my teeth in fury that nothing was done to help the honest, hard-working steelmen of Redcar, who now miserably face the loss of their homes as their murdered town sinks into enforced idleness. Here’s a solution. Most members of our Government seem to regard the industrial areas of Britain as a foreign country. Fine. Then let them admit it openly, and so include Redcar and the rest in the swollen, uncuttable foreign aid budget. Simple, eh? Graffiti attacking the regime has begun to appear in North Korea. This is the beginning of the end. Nothing so undermines authority, stability and order as the appearance of these hideous scribbles. While visiting the decrepit, bankrupt Hermit Kingdom a few years ago, I concluded (after observing several citizens prone and unconscious in the street) that its people survived mainly by drinking too much rice wine. Perhaps they have now run out of that, too.

Alex Reid blasts Katie Price for using alter-ego Roxanne against him They were barely married a year but Katie Price and Alex Reid are still locked in a bitter feud, five years after their divorce was finalised. The cross-dressing cage fighter's latest swipe at his ex-wife sees him claim 'she tried to destroy me' and pass partial blame onto her for the £400,000 worth of debt he's lumped with. Alex, 40, accused 37-year-old Katie of damaging his opportunities for work by being deliberately controversial about his transvestite alter-ego Roxanne as he spoke at length about his money woes in a new interview with the Mirror. Scroll down for video 'Then she used it all against me. I want to put the record straight. I am heterosexual, though I don’t deny I’ve experimented. But I am not having a sex change.' Alex claimed the mother-of-five exaggerated the involvement of Roxanne in his life to such an extent that she painted him out to be somebody's he not which has subsequently cost him jobs, according to him. He went on to divulge details about his stressful money situation, saying: 'How bad are things? I haven’t got a pot to p**s in.' Alex is thought to owe lawyers £75,000 in legal costs accumulated after splitting with Katie in 2011 and Chantelle Houghton - who is the mother of his daughter Dolly - a year later. Additionally, his Portugal holiday home - estimated to be worth around £275,000 - has plummeted in value meaning he's left forking out for a mortgage he can't afford but unable to sell. Adding further strain to the purse strings, he owes out £50,000 in money borrowed from friends and family. Katie's rep declined the offer to comment and MailOnline is awaiting further clarification from Alex's camp. Alex's latest outburst follows on from his most recent dig which involved him saying Katie needs to 'move on' as he prepares to marry fiancée Nikki Manashe. The 40-year-old has blasted recent comments made by the TV personality about his cross-dressing alter ego Roxanne as 'disgusting' and has insisted it's time for the star to 'leave him alone'. Speaking to Star magazine about Katie's remarks on Loose Women, the cage fighter said: 'I was disgusted and shocked. It's never nice to hear someone put you down on national TV and, as much as she's entitled to her own opinion, I believe she should be a lot more responsible.' Katie and Alex got together in 2009, two months after her divorce from first husband Peter Andre. They were married in Las Vegas less than a year later and confirmed they had separated in January 2011.

Barack Obama leaves Britain amid cheers and jeers Barack Obama is jetting out of Britain after provoking a whirlwind of cheers and jeers during what is likely to be his final visit to the country as US president. As Mr Obama headed to Germany on the last leg of his tour of the Middle East and Europe, his dramatic intervention in the Brexit battle continued to infuriate the Leave camp, but a warm response at a town hall-style meeting with young people in London gave him a rapturous goodbye. Following the question and answer session in Westminster, Mr Obama met Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, before heading to Hertfordshire for a game of golf with Prime Minister David Cameron. The president used the town hall meeting to urge young people to reject cynics telling them they cannot change the world. He praised the close relationship between the US and the UK, which he said had improved dramatically since the British "burned down my house" - a reference to the torching of the White House in the war of 1812-1814. The president insisted now was the best time in human history to be alive as he urged the audience to ignore cynical voices saying that nothing could change. "Take a longer, more optimistic view of history," Mr Obama said. Asked about his biggest achievement in the past eight years as president, Mr Obama cited bringing in health insurance and dealing with the financial crash. "Saving the world economy from a great depression, that was pretty good. I'll look at the scorecard at the end. I think I have been true to myself," he added. Though he did not refer directly to his controversial remarks that a post-Brexit Britain would be at the "back of the queue" when it came to American trade deals, Mr Obama said that generally such economic agreements were difficult due to "parochial" interests and "factions" within countries. Mr Obama said racial tensions in America still needed to be dealt with and people could not be complacent just because an African-American was in the White House. "One of the dangers is that by electing a black president people say there must be no problem at all. " Asked which grass-roots movements had been most impressive, Mr Obama cited the marriage equality campaign. "It's probably been the fastest set of changes in terms of a social movement that I've seen," he said. The president said he started out backing civil partnerships but gay friends helped persuade him that did not go far enough and full marriage equality was needed. Mr Obama praised Mr Cameron for being "ahead of the curve" on LGBT rights issues. A Sikh questioner called for movement on issues like discrimination at airport security. Mr Obama insisted it was explicit US policy not to racially profile at airports. The president also praised the Black Lives Matter movement for raising awareness but warned that you "can't just keep on yelling" at people who want to sit down and talk. "Seek out people who don't agree with you. That will teach you to compromise. Compromise does not mean surrendering what you believe," he said. Asked about the peace process in Northern Ireland, Mr Obama said it was an example of what could be achieved when the US and Britain worked together. He said the greatest allies in the fight against terrorism were Muslim Americans. "If we engage in Islamophobia we are not only betraying what is essential to us, but, just as a practical matter, we are engaging in self-defeating behaviour if we are serious about terrorism," he said. Though billed as an opportunity for young people to connect with Mr Obama, there were also some famous faces in the audience including Annie Lennox, Benedict Cumberbatch, Holly Valance, Bank of England governor Mark Carney and designer Ozwald Boateng.

Maine Sunday Telegram News Carver County Sheriff Jim Olson said during news conference that the investigation was ongoing, but that there were no obvious signs of trauma on the body and “we have no reason to believe this was a suicide.” The 57-year-old musician was found dead at his home Thursday morning. Despite his debauched stage presence and erotically charged music, Prince had a reputation for clean living and an ability to put on shows that were electrifying in their athleticism. But after his death – following a series of canceled shows, a reported emergency plane landing for medical treatment and a subdued hometown appearance – questions are being raised about whether he was hiding health problems from his fans. An autopsy was completed Friday to determine what caused the death of the “Purple Rain” superstar, though officials said it could take days or weeks before results are released. Prince was found unresponsive in an elevator at his Paisley Park compound in suburban Minneapolis and could not be revived, sheriff’s officials said. Prince had spoken about struggling with childhood epilepsy, and friends said he had hip trouble. His former percussionist, Sheila E., told The Associated Press that Prince suffered the effects from years of jumping off risers and speakers on stage while wearing high heels. “There was always something kind of bothering him, as it does all of us,” she said. “I hurt every single day. You know we’re like athletes, we train, and we get hurt all the time. We have so many injuries.” Despite problems with his hip and knee, Prince “kept doing it because he loved doing it and it was something no one was doing,” she said. Prince’s cousin Chazz Smith said he could not comment on reports about Prince’s health and would not say when he last saw his cousin. “I can tell you this: What I know is that he was perfectly healthy,” said Smith, who formed a band with Prince when they were kids. Smith said Prince swore off drugs and alcohol as a kid, and the group they played with saw a lot of music greats fall, so “we decided to never get into that stuff, and no one did.” Celebrity website TMZ.com, citing unidentified sources, reported last week that Prince fell ill as he returned from Atlanta to Minneapolis early on April 15, and that his flight made an emergency landing in Moline, Ill., where he was briefly hospitalized. Asked whether Prince’s flight made such a landing at the Quad City Airport in Moline, public safety manager Jeff Patterson said Friday that a private Falcon 900 plane made a “medical diversion landing” at 1:17 a.m. that day. He said the plane requested an ambulance at the airport and a patient was taken to the hospital. He would not identify the patient or the plane’s owner, or provide the aircraft’s tail number. The singer’s death came two weeks after he canceled concerts in Atlanta, saying he wasn’t feeling well. He then played a pair of makeup shows April 14 in that city, apologizing to the crowd shortly after coming on stage. At one point early in his first show he briefly disappeared from the stage without explanation. After about a minute he returned and apologized, saying he didn’t realize how emotional the songs could be. He played the rest of the show without incident, repeatedly jumping up from the and pacing around the stage between songs, and performed three encores. In the later show, Prince coughed a few times, though the show was again energetic. Then came the reported emergency landing en route to Minnesota. The night after that, Prince hosted a dance party at Paisley Park, where some fans said he looked fine and seemed irked by reports of an illness. “Wait a few days before you waste any prayers,” he said. But by his high-energy standards, it was a subdued appearance. Prince didn’t play except to tap out a few notes on a new purple Yamaha piano, and lingered only for a few minutes before disappearing. Prince was slated to perform a surprise set of shows earlier this week in St. Louis but canceled last week because of health concerns, a promoter said. Promoter Steve Litman said Friday that he had been working for weeks to set up two surprise pop-up shows on April 18 at the Fox Theatre in St. Louis. Litman said that tickets were set to go on sale April 15, but that Prince’s representatives told him on April 14 that Prince needed to back out because of concern he might have to cancel as a result of illness. Prince disclosed in a 2009 interview with Tavis Smiley that he was born an epileptic and had seizures when he was young. It was unclear if his epilepsy carried into adulthood. In 2009, Prince, a member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses, told an interviewer with the Los Angeles Times that he didn’t do drugs “or I’d give you a joint” to share while they listened to music. Heather McElhatton worked on and off as a set decorator for Prince’s video shoots at Paisley Park from 1988 to 1998. She said she never saw Prince take drugs or drink during her time there. “I never saw him use a single drug, ever, but he did have a lot of energy. He could shoot for two days straight,” McElhatton said Friday. “Was it natural energy? Was it augmented energy? I don’t know. I never saw him eat.” Sheila E. said that’s the man she knew, too. “It’s just like being a football player and a basketball player. You know he really took care of himself. He ate well. He ate better than me,” she said. She said she hadn’t talked to him for at least six months but tried to reach him after reading reports that he needed emergency medical attention. She said the man who answered told her Prince was sleeping and would let him know she called. “He said he was good,” she said.

Brisbane, North Queensland set pace in NRL SYDNEY (AP) — Last year's finalists Brisbane and North Queensland continued to set the pace in Australia's with heavy wins in the weekend's eighth round. Brisbane beat Souths 30-8 to start the round on Friday but paid a heavy price for the win, losing hooker Andrew McCullough to a serious knee injury and ending with two players — Joe Ofahengaue and — on report. The win kept Brisbane atop the table with 14 points, two points clear of North Queensland who beat Parramatta 32-16 in a see-sawing game. Cronulla has the chance to draw level with North Queensland when it plays Penrith on Sunday while Melbourne can also improve to 12 points when it hosts the New Zealand Warriors in one of three games played on Monday's ANZAC Day national holiday. Both Brisbane and North Queensland needed a late flood of points to overwhelm their eighth-round opponents and their ability to produce those strong finishes emphasized their premiership credentials. Brisbane led Souths 14-0 at halftime and protected their goalline for 53 minutes as they chased a 97-year-old competition record by holding opponents scoreless for three consecutive games. But England's Sam Burgess rallied Souths who closed to within six points when captain Greg Inglis scored the first points the Broncos have conceded in 213 minutes. Souths closed within six points before Brisbane surged away with a try to Corey Oates — his seventh of the season. Souths had been forced to make 63 more tackles than Brisbane in the first half and the effort told late in the second as the Broncos padded their lead with tries to Jordan Kahu and Corey Parker. North Queensland preserved its unbeaten record at home in 2016 but faced a tougher test from Parramatta than the scoreline indicated. Parramatta led 16-14 in the 66th minute when five- eighth Corey Norman was sin-binned for obstruction. leveled the score with the resulting penalty and North Queensland exploited its numerical advantage with late tries to Antonio Winterstein and a double to Michael Morgan. Canterbury held onto fifth place with a 21- 20 win over Gold Coast, sealed by a Josh Reynolds field goal in golden point extra time. Canberra crushed Wests 60-6 to move into sixth place. Wests trailed 12-6 after 17 minutes before conceding 48-straight points for their sixth-straight loss and their heaviest-ever defeat by Canberra. Josh Hodgson was outstanding for Canberra, playing a role in five of their 11 tries, running for 105 meters and making 22 tackles. Jordan Rapana crossed for four tries on the right wing.

Fury as the Bard is dragged into refugee row The BBC was accused last night of using its Shakespeare celebrations to push a 'Left-wing, pro-immigration agenda'. An obscure passage known as the 'immigration speech' was never performed in the playwright's lifetime, yet it was selected as one of the excerpts on BBC2's Shakespeare Live! last night. Tory MP Peter Bone said: 'They've gone out of their way to find a piece of writing which fits the Left-wing establishment's pro-immigration agenda and it's a shame. 'You'd have thought they could at least have found something which was published under Shakespeare's name for a start.' Read by Sir Ian McKellen, the speech appears in a play called Sir Thomas More, originally written by Anthony Munday about Henry VIII's Lord Chancellor. Shakespeare is thought to have inserted 17 lines which quote More trying to calm an angry mob looting immigrant businesses. The statesman asks them how they would feel if they were 'wretched strangers forced to seek refuge in a modern land'. The choice of text was made by Gregory Doran, artistic director of the Royal Shakespeare Company. Doran, who married his partner, actor Sir Antony Sher, last year, claimed last week that Shakespeare was gay.

Overseas, Obama begins the long goodbye LONDON (AP) — Back home, President Barack Obama has eight months, a dogfight over the Supreme Court and scores of campaign speeches for a successor ahead of him. But overseas, the president already has begun a long, slow goodbye. As Obama wrapped up his valedictory trip to London on Saturday, he looked very much like a president on his way out the door, reflecting on his tenure and eager to shape how he is remembered. At a town hall with young people, he was asked to look back far more than forward — and he readily obliged. He offered advice for the next president, whoever that is. And then he carved out an afternoon to get out on the links with Prime Minister David Cameron, one of the few world leaders he's made a point of describing as a close friend. "I think that I have been true to myself during this process," Obama said, reflecting on his presidency and his accomplishments. Obama said he was proud of his health-care overhaul, the Iran-nuclear deal, his handling of what he described as hysteria around the Ebola crisis and "saving the world economy from a Great Depression. " "That was pretty good," he said. The president acknowledged his victory lap was premature, saying, "I don't think that I'll have a good sense of my legacy until 10 years from now. " But it is hardly too soon for the presidential farewells to begin. Presidents regularly use their last year of foreign travel for sometimes sentimental stopovers in international capitals. The trips can be a way to attract attention while voters at home are distracted by the race for the next president. For Obama, they provide a last chance to capitalize on his relatively resilient popularity abroad. There are limits to what Obama can accomplish on his farewell tour. "I can give you one iron law: The president cannot shape his legacy. And he certainly can't shape it on the basis of trips, public relations and White House press statements in this last year in office," said Anthony Cordesman, a foreign policy analyst at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. "But every president I can think of during my adult life has tried. " The White House tested its playbook in London. While the president arrived to lend a hand to Cameron, who is bogged down in a campaign to keep Britons from voting to leave the European Union, that was only a slice of his trip. Obama's political intervention was wrapped in appeals to British sentimentality. On Friday, Obama filled his day paying social visits and making memorable snapshots with the next generation of British royals, including 2-year-old Prince George. The toddler got to stay up late in his bathrobe to meet the American president and first lady Michelle Obama. On Saturday, Obama stopped at the Globe theater on the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare's death. He toured the replica of the open-air playhouse the Bard designed in the 16th century and listened to Hamlet's "to be or not to be" soliloquy. Obama's visit took a relatively leisurely pace. His days have started later and ended earlier than they used to. His golf outing at The Grove with Cameron marked the first time he'd managed to exercise his golf obsession abroad. Obama is due Sunday in Hannover, Germany, a trip that is also viewed as a political favor for a close ally. Obama is expected to defend Chancellor Angela Merkel against criticism on trade and her stance on refugees. It will likely be his last trip to Germany, as well. At his London town hall, Obama fielded a question from a woman who came out as "non-binary" — identifying as neither exclusively male nor female — who pressed Obama on transgender rights. A Sikh man asked him about U. S. policies on religious profiling and discrimination. But largely the group wanted him to reflect on his tenure and offer advice. Obama passed up the chance to comment on the fierce campaign to succeed him. He said he'd love to see the next president focus on early childhood education, something his administration has not made a top-tier priority. He told young activists to eschew purity for practicality, specifically directing his comments at the Black Lives Matter movement. But Obama made no reference to his current battle with Congress over his nominee to the Supreme Court. His longest discussion of pressing policy matters was on trade. The president noted he'd not yet passed the Trans Pacific Partnership, a massive trade deal with Asian-Pacific nations, and that the Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment pact remains unfinished. But Obama made no promises about either deal's completion before he leaves office. He does, he noted, still have time to get more done. "Eight months and 52 days — not that I'm counting," he joked. "I just made that up, I actually don't know. It's roughly something like that. " ___ Associated Press writer Darlene Superville contributed to this report. ___ Follow Kathleen Hennessey on Twitter at http://twitter.com/khennessey ___ This story has been corrected to show that Prince George is 2, not 3.

Images from the scene show dozens of responding emergency vehicles with lights flashing. Witnesses spotted a stretcher being carried out. Social media messages described the panic on a smoke-filled Red Line train. Local authorities have reportedly blocked off the area between Albemarle Street and Wisconsin Avenue. Most people that were being evacuated complained of the “incompetence” of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), stating that communications had been horrible. DC Fire and EMS have tweeted out that there had been no casualties, but there is still smoke between the Friendship Heights & Tenleytown/AU stations. The incident was caused by “trouble inside a mechanical room,” DC Fire and EMS reported on its Twitter account. According to the emergency response team, the heavy smoke is concentrated around an insulator that caught on fire at the platform. DETAILS TO FOLLOW

Rafael Nadal through to final of Barcelona Open for ninth time Rafael Nadal reached the final of the Barcelona Open for the ninth time by beating German Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3, 6-3 on Saturday. The world number five from Spain next meets defending champion Kei Nishikori after the Japanese ousted Frenchman Benoit Paire 6-3, 6-2. Nadal will equal former Argentine great Guillermo Vilas' record of 49 claycourt titles if he wins on Sunday. He impressively beat Kohlschreiber and the German failed to get going when a spark was needed. Nadal broke his serve three times and saved the only break point which he conceded to Kohlschreiber. Nadal holds an 8-1 win-loss record against Nishikori, but expects a tough final. 'I will have to play my best,' he said. Nishikori dominated Paire, finishing the match with a total of five of nine break chances converted. 'It's been great these three years here so I hope I can play a great match tomorrow,' Nishikori said. The second-seeded Japanese took an early lead at 3-2 after Paire risked a drop shot that fell into the net to cede his second service game. It got worse for the Frenchman when he committed consecutive double faults to cede the last two points of the first set. Paire was erratic, mixing unforced errors and trick shots, including a between-the-legs drop shot that he unsuccessfully tried to repeat on the match's last point.

Thousands of Families in Limbo 2 Months After Gas Blowout It's been two months since a blown-out natural gas well was capped and officials spoke of thousands of uprooted families returning to their normal lives. But nearly half of the 8,000 families who left home at some point have yet to return, many still worried about the possibility of another leak and potential health hazards from chemicals in the gas that spewed uncontrollably for almost four months. Andrew Krowne's family is among those whose lives remain in limbo. Krowne, his wife, toddler and four other young children, are going into a fourth month at a hotel — paid for by Southern California Gas Co. —where they have celebrated four birthdays, including his wife's 40th and just last week, his daughter's fourth. "Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, birthdays, Easter, everything's been in the hotel," Krowne said. "It was basically, stay away from (home) like it was the plague. " The Krownes and others packed up to escape symptoms ranging from nausea to nosebleeds, rashes to respiratory problems — or to avoid breathing air they feared would cause future health problems as the SoCalGas storage facility gushed 100,000 tons of climate-changing methane. Concerns in Porter Ranch and surrounding communities were reinforced last weekend by a small gas leak and oil spill at another company operating in the Aliso Canyon, one of the nation's largest natural gas storage fields and the major supplier for Southern California. SoCalGas points out that public health agencies have found air in the community safe, but it has been forced by courts to extend paying for temporary housing while the county health department tests homes for chemicals. The department, which initially gave the all-clear signal, has fielded 300 complaints from residents since the leak was capped Feb. 18, and a survey found more than 60 percent still reporting symptoms. Facing a much longer haul than it expected when it offered to pay for an additional week of lodging after the leak was sealed, the company now plans to move people from hotels to what it says are high-quality, longer-term apartments with kitchens that will prevent them from having to shuffle between hotels. SoCalGas spokesman Chris Gilbride said the county has created uncertainty for residents by continuing to push for housing extensions while performing tests for some 200 compounds, many of which are found indoors and in common household products. "The Department of Public Health's methodology appears designed to test everything that may be found in indoor air regardless of any relationship with the gas leak and we expect they will fail to produce any results that help residents understand whether the gas leak impacted their indoor air," Gilbride said. Displaced residents, angry about the leak's effect on their lives and frustrated with lagging reimbursements for meals and mileage, are not happy about being uprooted again. "I don't want to move to downtown LA in some crappy accommodation," said Janet Terterian, who has been staying with her dogs in a Four Seasons hotel. "I want to go home, but then when I was going home, I was getting sick. " Terterian is so fed up, she's selling her house and plans to leave the area. She's having trouble finding a buyer for the spacious four-bedroom home she bought three years ago for $800,000 and listed in March for $1.1 million. Sales of Porter Ranch homes dropped 44 percent in the three months after the foul smell of gas began wafting over the area, compared with the three months before. The median price, which was just over $700,000 in March, remained stable during the period, according to RealtyTrac. The gas leak could have an impact on future development. The county has put a moratorium on all new residential development near the gas facility, holding up the luxury 188-home Hidden Creeks Estates, said Tony Bell, a spokesman for county Supervisor Michael Antonovich. The gas company had estimated costs related to the leak at $250 million to $300 million, but that was before the housing period was extended several times and doesn't include dozens of lawsuits or regulatory action. It said insurance should cover most of it. As the state investigates the cause of the blowout, the 114 other wells in the field are undergoing rigorous tests before the company can resume injecting gas into wells a mile-and-a-half underground. The company said it expects to resume operations by the end of the summer. The facility typically supplies gas-fired power plants during summer demand spikes and energy officials have warned that blackouts are possible without the facility's gas supplies. A consumer group and environmentalists have criticized such claims as a scare tactic to justify keeping the facility in operation. Krowne and others who live nearby are fighting to get the facility shut down. He's also fighting to stay in the Courtyard Marriott, where his family is packed into adjoining rooms, rather than move to an apartment. "They're ever so gently putting their hand on your back and forcing you to do this," Krowne said. "The whole point of this process is to make it so unbelievably hard on the resident so you give up and go home. "

‘Vindictive’ Polish leaders using new war museum to rewrite history, says academic A spectacular new museum of the second world war is at the centre of an extraordinary row between international academics and Poland’s political leadership, amid claims that the country’s ruling Law and Justice party is putting history at the service of politics. Due to open in December in the northern city of Gdańsk, the museum is billed as one of Europe’s prestige cultural projects for 2016. It comprises 13 storeys – six of them underground – and has been built at a cost of £72m. Dozens of countries across Europe and beyond have donated artefacts, including a Sherman tank and a Soviet T34 tank. The British historian Norman Davies, who is revered in Poland for his many books about the country, has been closely associated with the project for eight years and heads its high-ranking international advisory board. He told the Observer that attempts by the Law and Justice government to hijack the museum are “Bolshevik’’ in style and “paranoid’’. He said: “The Law and Justice government does not want a bunch of foreign historians to decide what goes on in ‘their’ museum.’’ The Oxford-based academic said one of the driving forces behind government hostility towards the project in its present form was Law and Justice strongman Jarosław Kaczyński, “who runs everything like a personal politburo.’’ There is also increasing evidence that a new “politics of memory” policy is being used to settle scores with political rivals, such as the former Solidarity leader Lech Wałęsa and the European council president Donald Tusk, prime minister of Poland at the time of the Smolensk air disaster that killed Lech Kaczyński, Jarosław’s twin brother. Both men are particularly associated with the city of Gdańsk. A government move to take control of the new museum appears to have been long planned. Soon after coming to power last autumn – when the new museum was almost complete – the Law and Justice government announced the creation of another museum in Gdańsk, at Westerplatte, where the first shots of the second world war were fired. Last week culture minister and deputy prime minister Piotr Gliński said he was considering merging the flagship museum with the as-yet-unbuilt Westerplatte museum. “This way he would create a new institution, with a new director,” and ultimately take control of both museums, said a spokesperson for Gdańsk city hall. Davies said he believed the moves against the second world war museum were coming directly from Kaczyński. “He is behaving like a Bolshevik and a paranoid troublemaker. Law and Justice are the most vindictive gang in Europe. Gdańsk is a particular target because of the association with Wałęsa and Solidarity, and Tusk, who is Gdańsk-born, is a history graduate and laid the foundation stone of the museum. Kaczyński was in Solidarity and managed Wałęsa’s election campaign before he became president of Poland [in 1990]. Wałęsa sidelined him, and Kaczyński has been planning his revenge ever since.’’ The historian said that the permanent exhibition planned for the museum was a “complete narrative of 1939-1945’’, put together by an advisory board with experience of building museums. “It is strongly about Europe, with an emphasis on the war as it concerned Poland. There is a substantial section about the Holocaust.’’ Kaczyński, who engineered his party’s landslide parliamentary election victory last October, has devised a “politics of memory’’ policy that aims to highlight Polish heroism and sacrifice throughout history. Last month the opening of a museum in Markowa commemorating the bravery of the Ulma family in saving their Jewish neighbours was fast-tracked. In a measure of the importance of the event for the government, the opening ceremony at the tiny homestead museum was simultaneously translated into five languages and streamed to Polish embassies in 17 countries. In a further move under the “politics of memory’’ banner, the government has proposed legislation that would punish the use of the phrase “Polish death camps’’ where “Nazi German death camps’’ is more accurate. Poland’s chief rabbi, Michael Schudrich, said: “It is hurtful for all Poles to hear of Polish death camps. It sounds like the Poles did it. They didn’t. The Germans did. This government wants to emphasis the positive things Poles did during the war. “The question is, will they de-emphasise the denouncements that occurred? Will they emphasise the righteous Gentiles while forgetting the informers? We do not know yet.’’ Last week the Princeton historian Jan Tomasz Gross – who wrote in September 2015 that Poles during the second world war killed more Jews than they killed Germans – was questioned by a prosecutor on the charge of “insulting the nation’’. The “politics of memory’’ policy has its own department in the ministry of culture and in part depends for its daily running upon measures, condemned by the United States and a range of European bodies and officials, to control the media, the internet and the judiciary. When state television broadcast the Oscar-winning Polish film Ida , the screening was preceded by a 12- minute warning to viewers of alleged historical inaccuracies “The ‘politics of memory’ policy appears to work largely by insinuation,” said Davies. “When I first heard about it 20 years ago, I thought it was aimed at picking up what the Soviets had left out of Polish history. Fair enough. But now that Law and Justice is in government, we are seeing it as it is: a xenophobic attempt to rewrite history. As a historian you can’t help but see the parallels: the [communist] Polish People’s Republic had a ‘history policy’, and here we go again.’’ The ministry of culture and two Law and Justice politicians did not respond to the Observer ’s request for comment.

Mayor sends displaced flood victims to hotels Mayor Sylvester Turner moved on Friday to make good on his promise to provide temporary housing for flood-displaced residents – most from the Greenspoint area – by securing hotel accommodations for families who had been living in city shelters. City health and housing officials, together with Red Cross volunteers, began checking families out of the city's last remaining shelter at about 6:30 p.m. Friday, loading them into METRO buses and taxis that would transport them to one of seven Greenspoint-area hotels. On HoustonChronicle.com: Displaced Greenspoint victim cries tears of joy Four days after floodwaters tore through 1,800 Greenspoint apartments, the city was prepared to house 139 families – everyone who was registered at the M. O. Campbell shelter as of Friday morning – for up to a week at a total cost of about $139,000, according to the city's flood recovery coordinator Bill Kelly. The effort is set to be financed by the nonprofit Greater Houston Storm Relief Fund, which Turner said has taken in well over $1 million in three days. "He wants them to be in a place that's comfortable. Right now they're sleeping on cots in a high school gymnasium," Turner spokeswoman Janice Evans said. "A hotel is a bed with a shower and you're not sleeping with a bunch of other people. You've got more privacy for your family. It's just all those comforts that we all would like to have. "

BBC pledges half of workforce will be women by 2020 Women will make up half of the BBC workforce on screen, on air and in leadership roles by 2020, the corporation has announced. It says it will "go further than ever before" to represent women, disabled people, ethnic minorities and LGBT people with its new diversity targets. The corporation wants to "meet or better" other broadcasters in representing the UK population by 2020. The BBC said it had made "good progress" but "there's more to do". "Almost half of our workforce is made up of women and the proportion of our workforce who are black, Asian and other ethnic minority is at an all-time high," a spokesperson said. "We'll continue doing what works but also develop new and innovative ideas to do even better, and we'll set this out in our new diversity strategy shortly. " At present, 48.4% of BBC employees are women, with women in 41.3% of leadership roles. The BBC has pledged that 15% of its workforce will be drawn from black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) backgrounds in staff and leadership roles by 2020, as well as ensuring the same percentage for on screen, on air and in leading roles. Disabled people will make up 8% of the workforce and lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) people will also comprise 8% by 2020. The targets will apply to all genres of programming but will not be programme specific, it said. Mark Atkinson, chief executive at disability charity Scope, said it was "positive to see the BBC, and other broadcasters like , reaffirming their commitment to on and off screen diversity this year". "We work with many talented disabled actors and aspiring presenters who are pushing hard to get a break. But it is still a huge struggle for disabled people to make it in the industry and there are too few opportunities," he said. In a statement, a BBC spokesperson said the proportion of staff from ethnic minorities was "at an all-time high" but it will "undertake to deliver more". "Significant steps forward have been taken but it is important to us that the BBC is truly representative of our all our audiences - diversity is more than any single characteristic," the spokesperson said. "We are the BBC and must be held to a higher standard. The range of the BBC's programme and services, and the fact that we will make sure that our approach to diversity is hardwired in everything we do, make these targets even more ambitious. "

Paul Gambaccini says he wouldn't pay to watch rock veterans perform It

has been dubbed the greatest rock gig of all time with Sir Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones and The Who all due to perform. But despite the unprecedented all-star line-up, broadcaster and music doyen Paul Gambaccini will not be going to the concert in California later this year – because he says the rock idols are past it and cannot do justice to their back catalogues. Gambaccini, 67, dubbed ‘the professor of pop’, said he was content to have seen the acts in their heyday. He added: ‘Having seen all of them multiple times in their prime, I don’t feel the need to see them again. ‘I don’t want to name individuals but the line-up does contain some people who are past their best voice and, you know, in my profession you pay very close attention to the voice. ‘I actually have an aversion to seeing heritage acts when either their voices are frayed or they don’t have the physical energy they used to have.’ Sir Mick Jagger, 72, McCartney, 73, and Roger Daltrey will take part in a three-day ‘mega music festival’ in October alongside Bob Dylan, 74, Neil Young, 70, and 72-year-old Roger Waters of Pink Floyd. It is not yet known how much tickets will cost, but each act is expected to earn millions. However, Gambaccini, who has a music show on Radio 2 and presents Radio 4 music quiz Counterpoint, said he could see the attraction for younger fans. He said: ‘I saw the late Muddy Waters when he was elderly, supporting Eric Clapton. Had he not gone on tour as an elderly man, I would never have seen him. So I am delighted that new generations can see these acts.’

Congo Republic president names one-time opposition leader as PM BRAZZAVILLE, April 23 (Reuters) - Congo's President Denis Sassou Nguesso named former finance minister Clement Mouamba as prime minister, bringing a one-time opposition leader into the government, state television said on Saturday. The appointment comes a month after Sassou Nguesso was elected to a five-year term that extends his long rule over the oil producing country. Sassou Nguesso led Congo between 1979 and 1992 and returned to power after a civil war in 1997. Mouamba was a senior member of the Pan-African Union for Social Democracy (UPADS) but was expelled from the opposition party for participating in consultations that preceded a referendum last October on changing the constitution to allow Sassou Nguesso to serve a third term. "I have no complex about coming to greet the head of state, the head of the village. Whatever the nature of the problems, I take responsibility for what I have done," he said at the time. The central African country has been gripped by political violence since the election. Human rights group Amnesty International said on Monday the government bombed residential areas in the country's south, reportedly killing at least 30 people. There was no immediate comment from the government, which has in the past denied targeting civilians. (Reporting by; Writing by Matthew Mpoke Bigg; Editing by Andrew Hay)

Protesters gather at Planned Parenthood in Salt Lake City to call for an end to abortion SALT LAKE CITY -- Around 30 people gathered outside Planned Parenthood in Salt Lake City Saturday afternoon to send a message: abolish abortion. The protesters joined hundreds of people across the country for a national protest against Planned Parenthood, organized by #ProtestPP. #ProtestPP calls itself a coalition made up of state and national pro-life groups. A small but mighty crowd stood their ground, as their cheers and chants echoed outside the clinic. "We love babies, yes we do! We love babies, how about you! " sang the mixture of adult and kid protesters in unison. "They are taking a life, and they need to realize that," protester Patience Kunz said. ProLife Utah , who organized the local rally, stated it wanted to put an end to taxpayer subsidies for Planned Parenthood. The group's leaders are calling for people to vote for candidates this year who promise to do just that. "A baby in the womb deserves the same rights and protections that the rest of us do," said ProLife Utah President Mary Taylor. She said in addition to calling for an end to legal abortion, she said the protest was meant to show support for David Daleiden. Daleiden faces criminal charges after releasing videos last year that supposedly showed Planned Parenthood officials talking about harvesting and selling tissue from aborted fetuses. Planned Parenthood has said the videos were secretly recorded, heavily edited and falsely portrayed the organization's participation in tissue donation programs. The Salt Lake City clinic stayed open on Saturday, and patients walked in and out a few yards away from the protest. CEO of Planned Parenthood Association of Utah Karrie Galloway gave FOX 13 a statement that reads: The people supporting ProLife Utah said more than anything, they wanted to spread awareness. "I hope that they all just branch out... do their research, learn a little about it," Kunz said.

How to be upper crust enough to join the patio pizza party Once upon a time, the pizza oven was a strictly professional piece of kit, found only in winding Neapolitan backstreets and noisy New York trattorias. Vast, brick-lined and spewing smoke, they required space, an endless supply of wood and a lifetime’s expertise in the pizza-making art. Now, though, they’re a full-blown British back garden phenomenon, with sales booming over the past year. Despite our damp, cool weather and national predilection for cheap takeaway pizzas that are indistinguishable from their steam-softened cardboard boxes, our nation of shopkeepers – or should that be shop-goers – is slowly morphing into the land of alfresco pizzaioli. Who knew? In fact, the outdoor pizza oven has become the essential accessory for any self-respecting gourmand. You can make your own, if you’re handy with bricks and clay, but for the rest of us, there are dozens of gleaming new models available, from cheap and cheerful to the altogether more grown-up. But, I hear you ask, what’s wrong with the supermarket pizza anyway? In a word, everything. The difference between a true Neapolitan pizza (all blistered, chewy crust, a thin slick of tart tomato sauce topped with small, bubbling pools of molten mozzarella) and its mass-market equivalent is immense – crown jewels as opposed to Barbie’s tiara. The former is one of the greatest things that could ever pass your lips; the latter, barely edible depression. So the fact that the home cook can whip up a decent pizza, with the minimum of effort, is good news for us all. The key to all these pizza ovens is heat, and lots of it. A good one will reach an optimum working temperature of about 450C – around twice as hot as a domestic kitchen oven. Searing stones cook the base, while the fierce heat crisps the top and melts the mozzarella into gooey loveliness. It should take no longer than two or three minutes to transform soft, pasty dough into burnished, billowing brilliance. You also get that wonderful characteristic scent of woodsmoke. One of my indoor favourites is the £385 Chadwick pizza oven, a piece of kitchen art that works on top of a gas cooker. The results are sublime. But spring has sprung, and the air is thick with the siren call of alfresco eating. I put five models to the test to find out whether they create pizza perfection… or merely sub-supermarket stodge. THE HEAT IS ON... IT'S TOM'S OVEN TEST

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley talks about upcoming Parliament session The upcoming Parliament session is expected to be a high decibel clash between the ruling benches and the Opposition as Union Finance Minister and senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley hinted in an exclusive interview with India Today. Jaitley said that the government would take on the Opposition on several issues ranging from the changing of affidavit in the Ishrat Jahan case during UPA regime to the ongoing Uttarakhand crisis. Jaitley also accused the Congress of having helped Vijay Mallya. Jaitley called into question the role of the Uttarakhand Assembly Speaker in the Constitutional crisis that the state is gripped in. “The Uttarakhand issue should certainly be debated upon. The way the Constitution was violated there when the previous government was in power is unprecedented; such an instance cannot be found in history. They failed to pass the budget and the Speaker, without doing his calculations, declared that it had been passed. Democracy runs on math. To declare the failed budget as passed, there can be no bigger violation of the Constitution,” said Jaitley. He said the moment the Harish Rawat-led Congress government in Uttarakhand failed to get the budget passed, it lost all right to remain in power. When asked about the observations of the Uttarakhand High Court which apparently went against the Centre, Jaitley declined to comment, saying the matter was sub-judice in the Supreme Court and could not be discussed, either in the Parliament or outside. Also, Jaitley accused the Congress of trying to disrupt the working of the Parliament despite not having numbers. “We always talk to the Opposition as the country is faced with huge legislative businesses to take care of, but if the Congress believes in disrupting the Parliament without having numbers then I don’t have anything to say,” he said. Speaking about BJP’s strategy to checkmate the Congress by raising issues such as saffron terror, given that Colonel Purohit had been given a clean chit, Jaitley said it was the prerogative of members to raise and discuss issues. “Such issues which become public knowledge can always be discussed by MPs, like the revelations in the Ishrat Jahan case and those in the case of Colonel Purohit,” Jaitley said. Regarding the Mallya muddle, Jaitley said the present dispensation was battling the ‘sins’ of previous governments. “NPAs is big issue and if the issue of Vijay Mallya comes up we will certainly have a discussion. We have taken steps to ensure recoveries; after all, these are sins of the previous government which we are trying to solve. We are bearing the brunt of it,” Jaitley said. And would the Opposition try to corner the government over the issue of drought? “It is not a matter of criticism but of providing relief. Objective criteria are in place under which we are helping the state governments,” Jaitley said.

Now Hillary Clinton sticks her oar into the Brexit debate White House candidate Hillary Clinton has also waded into the Brexit debate to warn Britain against leaving the European Union. The presidential front-runner is the second American heavyweight to voice opinion on the upcoming referendum, after Barack Obama intervened at a press conference in London last week. The former secretary of state's senior policy adviser, Jake Sullivan, told The Observer: 'Hillary Clinton believes that transatlantic cooperation is essential, and that co-operation is strongest when Europe is united. 'She has always valued a strong United Kingdom in a strong EU. And she values a strong British voice in the EU.' The latest foreign intervention came as Leave campaigners launched a furious backlash against Mr Obama, branding him an irrelevant 'lame duck' after the US president warned Britain would be at 'the back of the queue' for American trade deals if it backed Brexit. Justice Minister Dominic Raab led the personalised attacks against Mr Obama as the Leave campaign tried to shift the emphasis of the campaign to immigration. He said: 'This is really about a lame duck US president about to move off the stage doing an old British friend a favour. 'I have got no doubt that future US trade negotiators are going to look to other opportunities - I think the British will be first in the queue, not at the back of the queue.' The attack came after Mr Obama set out in stark terms that Britain would not be able to strike a free trade deal with the US 'any time soon' if it leaves the European Union (EU) because Washington's focus would be on reaching agreement with Brussels. Former Tory leader and ex-work and pensions secretary Iain Duncan Smith moved to switch attention to immigration as he insisted the living wage would provoke a 'stampede' to Britain from poorer EU nations. He wrote in The Daily Mail: 'I cheered the introduction of the national living wage, but when take-home pay in Britain is already more than five times higher than in the poorest EU countries, such a jump in wages will surely lead to another stampede to our borders. 'To make the living wage work for British people, we need to be able to control the number of people coming in.' Ukip leader Nigel Farage also savaged Mr Obama's trade deal remarks, insisting the president did not know what he was talking about and was being manipulated by Number 10. 'He said Britain would be at the back of the queue, no American would ever say 'back of the queue', Americans don't use the word 'queue', Americans use the word 'line',' Mr Farage told BBC Radio Four's Any Questions. 'Therefore, what Obama said when he said we would be at the back of the queue, he was doing the bidding of Cameron, and Number 10, and doing his best to talk down Britain, and I think that's shameful.' Tory former defence secretary Liam Fox said Mr Obama's views would be irrelevant after the looming US presidential election. 'We have a referendum at the end of June, presidential elections are in November, so whoever it is that will be at the helm of the United States won't be Barack Obama. So, to an extent, whatever he says today is largely irrelevant,' he told BBC Two's Newsnight. 'It will be the next president, and the next congress, who will be in charge of any trade arrangements.' Leave backer and former foreign secretary Lord Owen told BBC Radio 4's Today programme Mr Obama's trade embarks had been 'crafted' in Downing Street. London mayor Boris Johnson stood by his remarks that Mr Obamas comments were 'perverse'. At a joint press conference with Prime Minister David Cameron, the president stressed the referendum was a 'decision for the people of the United Kingdom' and he was 'not coming here to fix any votes'. He added: 'I think it's fair to say that maybe some point down the line there might be a UK-US trade agreement, but it's not going to happen any time soon because our focus is in negotiating with a big bloc, the European Union, to get a trade agreement done. 'The UK is going to be in the back of the queue.' Mr Cameron said the referendum was the 'sovereign choice of the British people' but added: 'As we make that choice, it surely makes sense to listen to what our friends think, to listen to their opinion, to listen to their views, and that's what Barack has been talking about.'

Bayern Munich should be scared of reborn Fernando Torres A couple of months ago you would probably not have bet a thin dime that Fernando Torres might end the season as one of the chief protagonists, threatening to win serious trophies. Then again that’s exactly the way it felt to most people the last time a rank outsider, Chelsea, won the Champions League — back in 2012. It was then that Torres, something of a waif and stray at Stamford Bridge by then, popped up with that dramatic breakaway goal at the Nou Camp to knock out holders Barcelona. A habit he seems to have adopted. Then, in circumstances sufficiently dramatic to match Manchester United in 1999 and Liverpool in 2005, he came on as a late, late substitute in the final, won a corner with his last touch of normal time and watched Didier Drogba rocket home one of the all-time great headers from it in order to make the match 1-1 and take it to an extraordinary period of extra-time. The opponents that night of May 19 four years ago? Bayern Munich. So you would imagine that Pep ‘Mr Scrupulous’ Guardiola already has his file open on El Nino. And also that Bayern’s players and fans, Philipp Lahm in particular, will be wondering: ‘Is he really back?’ Five goals in five games before this weekend suggests the answer: ‘Yes’, so Bavarians beware. Lahm and Guardiola have both been made to suffer by Torres — it was Herr Pep who was in charge of Barcelona that night in the dramatic semi-final of 2012 and the Catalan went directly into his office that evening to tell the late Tito Villanova: ‘That’s it, I’m quitting in May — I’ve had enough’. Lahm? Well it was he who had the advantage on Spain’s centre forward in the 2008 European Championship final and should have been able to clear the ball when Xavi sent the Madrileno barrelling through on Jens Lehmann’s goal in the first half. But Torres somehow hurdled the diminutive German, wriggling around his challenge and stabbed the ball past the advancing keeper for a 1-0 advantage which made Spain champions for the first time since 1964. The three will be reunited this week in Atletico’s seething Calderon Stadium. And El Nino’s recent eruption of form, confidence, fitness and leadership couldn’t have been better timed. Even though he’s been a magical player, capable of power, invention, technique, pace, height, a range of goals, record-breaking statistics and a cool, cold-blooded head for winning big matches there have been moments this season when there didn’t look a great argument for Atletico renewing the contract which ends in June. It made me recall a time, at Chelsea, when Torres gave me to believe that the footballing life weighed heavily on him. He told me that he couldn’t wait to get back to Madrid and that the best thing about his neighbourhood in London was the large majority of foreign, often Asian, inhabitants who were totally disinterested in football and, thus, left him well alone. But don’t mistake that for millionaire disdain. When I’ve been around Torres in situations where fans turn up to queue for a photo or an autograph I don’t think I’ve ever seen a world famous athlete spend more time, exhibit more generosity in his reactions. Since rejoining Atletico, he became aware of a 10- year-old who had deluged the club with requests to meet Torres. One day he scheduled it and it happened. The youngster was beside himself: he watched training, received an Atletico shirt signed by El Nino and there was conversation too. The kid’s mum said to her son: ‘Tell Fernando who your hero is’. ‘Well, it’s you and it has been all my life,’ the youngster told the World Cup winner. ‘But I do have another hero and that’s my friend back home because he’s spending most of the year in hospital and every time he comes back to his house, he hopes he’s won his battle. But, then, he needs to go back to hospital again.’ It transpired that the kid in question had leukaemia and Torres told his admirer, firmly: ‘I’m not a hero, your friend is the real one. The mother who works 12 hours a day every day to support a family of five because she’s on her own — that’s a hero. Those are the people to admire.’ Obvious, you’d say. But decent advice from a superstar to a star-struck kid. ‘People seem to think that football increasingly about “me, me, me”, being the guy who scores the goals, thinking about a fancy new haircut, better and better cars — and that’s not what football is,’ says Torres. ‘It’s not what young kids need to see or learn from. Business, money — that’s what drives football now and often footballers are the most culpable. We promote the opposite of the humility which is vital.’ Torres’ unfulfilled dream, in case you’re interested, isn’t to win this Champions League and play a more significant part than the last time he won the trophy but to have been at university in his late teens and early Twenties. ‘During that phase of your life when you are opening up, learning, forming yourself,’ he says. What got in the way of him going to university, having excelled at school, was the explosion of his career. Captain of Atletico at 19, double European champion (goals in each of the finals) before that. For all that he was disparaged for his form after leaving Liverpool, this is a man with medals for four European championships, goals in all four finals, the Champions League, the Europa League (goal in the final again) 100 goals for Atletico and a role in the goal which won Spain the World Cup Final. Troubles and medals he’s had, but not in equal share. The advice he’d give a 17-year-old Fernando Torres if he could? ‘Talk little, listen a lot.’ It’s a big week for the humble El Nino.

Slice of the Good Life: Springtime penne This is a dee-lish, light yet heartwarming dinner for all the family to enjoy. The flavours are a dream. SERVES 4 olive oil, for cooking 100g (3½ oz) shallots, peeled and cut into long very thin slices 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed or very finely chopped 1 tsp dried red chilli flakes 400g (14oz) asparagus, woody stems trimmed and cut on the diagonal into 2.5cm (1 in) pieces 250g (9oz) cherry tomatoes, halved 250g (9oz) fresh or frozen peas 400g (14oz) gluten-free penne 30g (1¼ oz) rocket, roughly chopped 10g (½ oz) basil, leaves only, roughly chopped parmesan or nutritional yeast flakes, for serving salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 Bring a large saucepan of salted water to the boil over a high heat. 2 Meanwhile, heat a generous amount of olive oil in a separate pan over a medium heat. Add the shallots, garlic and red chilli flakes and cook for about 2-3 minutes, or until they start to melt and become translucent. You don’t want the shallots to burn or have colour. Add the asparagus, tomatoes and peas and continue cooking for 7-8 minutes until the veggies are cooked through but still have a crunch. 3 Once the water is boiling in the saucepan add the pasta. It is important to slightly undercook the pasta by about 2 minutes in this recipe. (See also Tip below). 4 Once the pasta is ready, remove about 60ml water with a ladle and set aside, then strain the pasta straight away and add it to the vegetables with the reserved pasta water. Allow the water to absorb into the pasta and finish cooking, season with salt and pepper, then add the rocket and basil. 5 Serve with a little parmesan or a sprinkle of nutritional yeast flakes if you want to keep it dairy-free. TIP Gluten-free pasta likes to stick together, so make sure to stir occasionally. Don’t add olive oil to the pasta water, as this causes the oil to coat the pasta when you drain it, which will inhibit it from absorbing the sauce! In a new study published in PLoS Genetics, USC Stem Cell researcher Lindsey Barske from the laboratory of Gage Crump and her colleagues identify the roles of key molecular signals that control this critical timing. Previous work from the Crump and other labs demonstrated that two types of molecular signals, called Jagged-Notch and Endothelin1 (Edn1), are critical for shaping the face. Loss of these signals results in facial deformities in both zebra fish and humans, revealing these as essential for patterning the faces of all vertebrates. - sciencedaily.com

Shah Rukh Khan's Fan raises questions about celebrity culture and fans In the anthology film, Bombay Talkies, released in 2013, Anurag Kashyap tells the story of a young man from Allahabad who makes the journey to Bachchan’s house in Bombay, with a bottle of homemade murabba. Kashyap told the Wall Street Journal: ‘It’s about how a star’s persona affects everyday life in India: how their dialogues are etched in stone, how each one of us unknowingly emulates our favourite onscreen characters.’ Journey Shah Rukh Khan’s Fan treads similar territory. In a double role, Khan plays Aryan Khanna, a Bollywood superstar, as also Gaurav Chandna, Khanna’s obsessed fan, who makes the journey to Khanna’s (read Shah Rukh’s) bungalow. He comes from a middle class family in West Delhi’s Inder Vihar. The neighbourhood of DDA flats is brought alive on screen, complete with black Sintex tanks, bundles of pipes and wires and mohalla talent nights. From the terrace, one can see the Metro lights blinking in the distance. I’ve long felt that Khan needed a good script, that he still has something to offer as an actor, something he hasn’t done since Chak de! India. The formulaic Chennai Express might have gotten him a new audience, a different generation of kids, but for us old fans, it was plain boring. We, like SRK, had grown up. Like many others, I saw Baazigar, Darr and Anjaam in single screen theatres when they first came out. In Fan, Maneesh Sharma gives Khan a taut script, which is all story and no songs, and directs a thriller that often doesn’t seem like a thriller but something else - good drama that is close to real life, with several psychological layers. Middle class West Delhi is brilliantly observed and committed to screen. Sharma, who grew up in Pitampura, stays close to his roots. Fan raises questions about celebrity culture and the fan/ superstar binary, but goes beyond that. It doesn’t try to send any messages. For the most part, it concentrates on telling the story of these two characters, as simply as possible. In the process, it raises questions about identity and fame, but feels no need to provide any obvious answers. The premise of the film never bogs it down; Fan is a triumph of storytelling. Khan’s performance is terrific. It’s only after the film is over that the viewer starts to think: there is more to this than meets the eye. In that sense, Fan is genuinely thought-provoking. You empathise both with the obsessed fan as well as the world-conquering superstar. Chandna doesn’t start out as a stalker, he becomes one during the course of the film. He is the only child of loving parents who chop vegetables together. The inside of his room is not very different from the superstar’s house –it’s a shrine to stardom. In one scene, the fan manages to blag his way into the superstar’s house and smashes up his award trophies, framed photos and the banjo from DDLJ. Do these objects really matter? Acting SRK plays the fan so convincingly that for the most part, I forgot that it was him acting. By playing his own fan, he collapses the distance between his two selves - a star can be his own biggest fan, leading to a kind of duality within one’s own self. The script forces Shah Rukh to tap into this, the over-the-top self confidence of the superstar is coupled with the hurting vulnerability of the fan - they both are part of the same fantasy. Both Aryan Khanna and Gaurav Chandna are shown to have normal lives, the moment they step out of this fantasy. In one scene Aryan tells Gaurav: Look, our backgrounds are similar. I grew up in a similar middle class neighbourhood, in a similar family and we went to similar schools. Khanna has his wife and kids. Gaurav runs a small internet cafe and is a simpleton in a harsh society. It’s people who are cruel. They will judge the superstar, as much as they do the oddball. Both will be pulled down with scathing viciousness. Both are punished for being different. It’s the way of the world. Stardom The bubble of stardom is a bubble, albeit one filled with luxuries. The star is cut-off from reality, even if he doesn’t want things to be that way. He has no way of knowing who is a genuine friend and who isn’t. Do they love you because you are Shah Rukh or do they love you for who you are? Can the two ever be separated? Fan gives us a glimpse into that loneliness. The crazy fan extends a hand of friendship, if one can call it that. At least it is genuine. Which is why Aryan always forgives him. He tries to save Gaurav till the very end. He literally offers his hand to save him, when he slips and falls over from the terrace in the final scene. It’s the fan who pulls away. Aryan doesn’t want him to do so. After the film ended, I walked out into the foyer of the theatre and pressed the arrow button for the lift to come up. While the lift was still lost somewhere in the chute, I realised I had left the ticket in the soft drink holder of my seat’s armrest. I wanted to keep it as a memento. I had a fan moment. I went back and recovered it. It’s in a secret hiding place now. I won’t tell you where it is. The writer’s new book, ‘House Spirit: Drinking in India’, is out in May

Offspring's Asher Keddie and Kat Stewart set to bring babies on set She plays an obstetrician on one of Channel Ten's most popular dramas, which just happens to be titled Offspring. So it's no surprise that actress Asher Keddie will be bringing her one-year-old baby boy Valentino on set when the show's sixth season resumes filming. Speaking to The Daily Telegraph , Asher's co-host Kat Stewart, who plays her sister on the show, revealed she will be taking her newborn daughter Georgia, nicknamed Gigi, to the 'family-friendly' shoots as well. 'I think it will only enrich the experience of doing the show having them around,' the 43-year- old the publication. The brunette beauty, who portrays Billie Proudman on the drama, revealed on Sunday that she and her husband David Whiteley were overjoyed to welcome their daughter Georgia five weeks ago. She is already mother to a son, four-year-old Archie, who also accompanied her to shoots on previous occasions. 'Archie was on set with me when he was really little and I'm doing the same with Gigi,' she said. Meanwhile lead star of the show, Asher, who plays protagonist Nina Proudman, welcomed her son Valentino with husband Vincent Fantauzzo in March last year. She is also a step-mother to artist Vincent's son Luca from a previous relationship. Last September the news emerged that the show has been renewed for a sixth season, after having wrapped up in 2014 following five drama-filled seasons. Earlier this month it emerged that shooting will begin in Melbourne on April 25 and continue until July. The shooting dates were revealed in a Star Now casting call posted looking for pregnant woman who are 'happy for their newborns to feature' in the upcoming 2016 series. The advertisement by production company EndemolShine Australia stated: 'Offspring: Season 6 for Channel 10 are on the hunt for newborn babies to feature in the show! 'We are looking for women who are currently pregnant who would be happy for their newborns to feature in the TV show. All standard Infant Employment Guidelines will apply. 'Shooting Begins 25 April until July - so if you are due anytime between now and the end of July, please apply below and let us know your due date.' Daily Mail Australia has reached out to Network Ten and EndemolShine Australia for comment. This follows the announcement on the official Offspring Facebook page back in September, confirming there will be a sixth season hitting our screens next year. 'The story continues… We’re excited to announce that Offspring will return to TEN for a sixth season in 2016,' read the brief statement. It is also believed that Patrick Brammall - who plays Leo Taylor, the recent love interest of Asher's character Nina - may well be returning for season six. This came after a Ten spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia the previous month: 'We are in talks with the production company and hopeful Offspring will return, but nothing is definite.' For more than a year the network had stated it was still locked in discussions with the show's producers to commission a sixth season. In October 2014, Beverley McGarvey, chief programming officer at Ten, told Daily Mail Australia a final decision regarding the popular program had not been made for 2015. 'We want Offspring to return in 2015. We are in discussions with the producers and they are, in turn, in discussions with the key creatives and cast,' she said. It had previously been reported that Offspring would not return due to financial reasons. As the series passed its 65th episode, the production will no longer receive a rebate from Screen Australia, increasing the costs of making the show. Speculation began about whether the series, starring Logie Award-winner Asher, would return in 2015 after the season five finale last year appeared to neatly tie up the characters' storylines. The 'final' episode ended on a happy note with Nina finding love with Leo, and knowing she wants to continue her work as an obstetrician following the death of her husband Patrick. At the time, frustrated fans took to social media, urging Ten to announce a sixth season. Created by Debra Oswlald and John Edwards, the show has won and been nominated for countless TV awards. It starred some of the country's top acting talents including Eddie Perfect and Kat Stewart. One of the most memorable storylines included the devastating on-screen death of Nina's lover, Dr Patrick Reid, played by Matt Le Nevez. Nina later struck a romance with tradesman Thomas - but the love turned sour following a cheating scandal. She subsequently found a spark with male nurse Leo played by Patrick Brammall. Nina's original love interest - before Dr Patrick arrived on the scene - was fellow medical practitioner, Dr Chris Havel, played by Don Hany. And back in 2015, Don said he was keen to return to the TV series if it got the green light. Speaking to Daily Mail Australia at the ASTRA Awards in Sydney, the 40-year-old said: 'Of course, I would love to go back... it's a fun show'.
