ON ATTRACTION OF SLIME MOULD PHYSARUM POLYCEPHALUM TO PLANTS WITH SEDATIVE PROPERTIES ANDREW ADAMATZKY Abstract. A plasmodium of acellular slime mould Physarum polycephalum is a large single cell with many nuclei. Presented to a configuration of attracting and repelling stimuli a plasmodium optimizes its growth pattern and spans the attractants, while avoiding repellents, with efficient network of protoplasmic tubes. Such behaviour is interpreted as computation and the plasmodium as an amorphous growing biologi- cal computer. Till recently laboratory prototypes of slime mould computing devices (Physarum machines) employed rolled oats and oat powder to represent input data. We explore alternative sources of chemo-attractants, which do not require a sophis- ticated laboratory synthesis. We show that plasmodium of P. polycephalum prefers sedative herbal tablets and dried plants to oat flakes and honey. In laboratory experi- ments we develop a hierarchy of slime-moulds chemo-tactic preferences. We show that Valerian root (Valeriana officinalis) is strongest chemo-attractant of P. polycephalum outperforming not only most common plants with sedative activities but also some herbal tablets. Introduction Physarum polycephalum belongs to the species of order Physarales, subclass Myxo- gastromycetidae, class Myxomycetes, division Myxostelida. It is commonly known as a true, acellular or multi-headed slime mould. Plasmodium is a `vegetative' phase, single cell with a myriad of diploid nuclei. The plasmodium looks like an amorphous yellowish mass with networks of protoplasmic tubes. The plasmodium behaves and moves as a giant amoeba. It feeds on bacteria, spores and other microbial creatures and micro- particles (Stephenson & Stempen, 2000). -

In Brazil, the economic potential of the germoplasm of medicinal plants is a wealth to be used and preserved. Native and exotic species are used medicinally in Brazil. Among them, Aloysia gratissima (Gill et Hook) Tronc. (native) and Aloysia triphylla (LHer.) Britton (exotic) both from Verbenaceae Family are highlighted. In this study the meiotic behavior and pollen viability in populations of these species of the genus Aloysia from Rio Grande do Sul State were analyzed. -

Phyla scaberrima (Verbenaceae) is a herbaceous peren- nial species that is distributed from Mexico (center of origin) to Colom- bia, growing in forest and swamp edges or grasslands from sea level up to an altitude of 1800 m. The chemical properties and uses in popular medicine have drastically affected the population size of this species. In this study, we investigated genetic variability in populations of P. scaberrima using AFLP markers. Three AFLP primer combinations rendered a total of 997 markers in a sample of 131 individuals from five populations, including two populations from Mexico and three from Colombia. The average percentage of polymorphic loci, gene diversity and Shannon-Wiener index were 46.62, 0.0695, and 0.119, respectively. Aloysia Citriodora Aloysia Citrodora Is a Species of Flowering Plant in the Verbena Family Verbenaceae, Native to Western South America
Aloysia citriodora Aloysia citrodora is a species of flowering plant in the verbena family Verbenaceae, native to western South America. Common names include lemon verbena and lemon beebrush. It was brought to Europe by the Spanish and the Portuguese in the 17th century and cultivated for its oil. Description Lemon verbena is a perennial shrub or subshrub growing to 2–3 m high. The 8-cm-long, glossy, pointed leaves are slightly rough to the touch and emit a powerful scent reminiscent of lemon when bruised (hence the Latin specific epithet citrodora—lemon-scented). Sprays of tiny purple or white flowers appear in late spring or early summer. It is sensitive to cold, losing leaves at temperatures below 0 °C (32 °F), although the wood is hardy to −10 °C (14 °F). Due to its many culinary uses, it is widely listed and marketed as a plant for the herb garden. Uses Lemon verbena leaves are used to add a lemon flavor to fish and poultry dishes, vegetable marinades, salad dressings, jams, puddings, Greek yogurt and beverages. It also is used to make herbal teas, or added to standard tea in place of actual lemon (as is common with Moroccan tea). It can also be used to make a sorbet. Chemistry The major isolates in lemon verbena oil are citral (30–35%), nerol and geraniol. Extracts of lemon verbena also contain verbascoside.
