1 Chapter Seven Cold Commodities: Discourses of Decay and Purity in a Globalised Jazz World Haftor Medbøe Since gaining prominence in public consciousness as a distinct genre in early 20th Century USA, jazz has become a music of global reach (Atkins, 2003). Coinciding with emerging mass dissemination technologies of the period, jazz spread throughout Europe and beyond via gramophone recordings, radio broadcasts and the Hollywood film industry. America’s involvement in the two World Wars, and the subsequent $13 billion Marshall Plan to rebuild Europe as a unified, and US friendly, trading zone further reinforced the proliferation of the new genre (McGregor, 2016; Paterson et al., 2013). The imposition of US trade and cultural products posed formidable challenges to the European identities, rooted as they were in 18th-Century national romanticism. Commercialised cultural representations of the ‘American dream’ captured the imaginations of Europe’s youth and represented a welcome antidote to post-war austerity. This chapter seeks to problematise the historiography and contemporary representations of jazz in the Nordic region, with particular focus on the production and reception of jazz from Norway. Accepted histories of jazz in Europe point to a period of adulatory imitation of American masters, leading to one of cultural awakening in which jazz was reimagined through a localised lens, and given a ‘national voice’. Evidence of this process of acculturation and reimagining is arguably nowhere more evident than in the canon of what has come to be received as the Nordic tone. In the early 1970s, a group of Norwegian musicians, including saxophonist Jan Garbarek (b.1947), guitarist Terje Rypdal (b.1947), bassist Arild Andersen (b.1945), drummer Jon Christensen (b.1943) and others, abstracted more literal jazz inflected reinterpretations of Scandinavian folk songs by Nordic forebears including pianist Jan Johansson (1931-1968), saxophonist Lars Gullin (1928-1976) bassist Georg Riedel (b.1934) (McEachrane 2014, pp. -

There is every reason to remember Holmboe, who was President of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters Abel’s mathematics teacher at Christiania Cathedral School from when Abel was 16. Holmboe discovered Abel’s talent, inspired him, encouraged him, and took the young pupil considerably further than the curriculum demanded. He pointed him to the professional literature, helped Your Majesties, Excellencies, dear friends, him with overseas contacts and stipends and became a lifelong colleague and friend. -

For 45 years, he has been a major force, producing a prodigious and creative body of work that expands beyond jazz. Surman’s extensive discography as a leader and a side man numbers more than 100 recordings to date. Surman has worked with dozens of prominent artists worldwide, including John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, Chris McGregor’s Brotherhood of Breath, Dave Holland, Miroslav Vitous, Jack DeJohnette, Terje Rypdal, Weather Report, Karin Krog, Bill Frisell, Paul Motian and many more. Surman is probably most popularly known for his longstanding association with the German label ECM, who began releasing Surman’s recordings in 1979. Surman has won numerous jazz polls and awards and a number of important commissions. Every period of his career is filled with highlights, which is why Cuneiform is exceedingly proud to release for the first time ever this amazing document of the late 60s 'Brit-jazz' scene. Born in Tavistock, in England, Surman discovered music as a child, singing as soprano soloist in a Plymouth-area choir. He later bought a second- hand clarinet, took lessons from a Royal Marine Band clarinetist, and began playing traditional Dixieland jazz at local jazz clubs. -

Biography Jan Gunnar Hoff Norwegian pianoplayer and composer (born 1958) educated at the Jazzdepartment, Trondheim Conservatory 1986-89 and at NMH Oslo, composition 2001-2002. Hoff´s background includes classical piano, progressive rock and jazz. His career as a jazz musician started in 1976 with piano trio and continued as a backing musician for drummer Jon Christensen and other jazz artists at local clubs. Hoff has worked as a professional musician since 1979 and as early as 1982 he toured with Arild Andersen and Nils Petter Molvær in Northern Norway. In 1987 he participated in an all star Norwegian combo presenting Jan Garbarek's anniversary composition for the Federation of Norwegian Jazz musicians, FNJ. Hoff has played and collaborated with Alex Acuña, Mike Stern, Pat Metheny, Maria Joao, Kenwood Dennard, Audun Kleive, Bjørn Kjellemyr, Mathias Eick, Tore Brunborg, Lars Danielsson, Cæcilie Norby, Fathy Salama, Martin France, Chick Corea a.o. In 2005 Hoff received the prestigous Edvard Grieg prize as a composer for his jazz mass Meditatus. He wrote the commission work “Free flow songs” for Vossajazz in 2005 and the piece “MAGMA” for legendary US guitarist Mike Stern in 2006. Hoff´s last solo CD MAGMA (2008) has an international line up with Mike Stern, Mathias Eick, Maria Joao, Eivind Aarset a.o. In 2008 and 2009 Hoff has performed and toured in Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Croatia, Iceland, Austria, Italy, Sweden, USA, England and Norway, including major cities such as New York, London, Stockholm, Zagreb and Moscow. Kristin Asbjørnsen www.kristinsong.com Singer and songwriter Kristin Asbjørnsen is one of the most distinguished artists on the vibrating extended music scene in Europe. During the last decade, she has received overwhelming international response among critics and public alike for her unique musical expression. 2018 saw the release of Kristin’s Traces Of You. Based on her assured melodic flair and poetic lyrics, Kristin has on this critically acclaimed album explored new fields of music. Vocals, kora and guitars are woven creatively into a meditative and warm vibration, showing traces of West African music, lullabyes and Nordic contemporary jazz. Lyrical African ornaments unite in a playful dialogue with a sonorous guitar universe. Kristin sings in moving chorus with the Gambian griot Suntou Susso, using excerpts of her poems translated into Mandinka language. During 2019 Kristin will be touring in Europe in trio with the kora player Suntou Susso and guitarist Olav Torget, performing songs from Traces Of You, as well as songs from her afro-american spirituals repertoire. Kristin is well known for her great live-performances and she is always touring with extraordinary musicians. The Norwegian singer has featured on a number of album releases, as well as a series of tours and festival performances in Europe. Her previous solo albums I’ll meet you in the morning (2013), The night shines like the day (2009) and Wayfaring stranger (2006) were released across Europe via Emarcy/Universal. Wayfaring stranger sold to Platinum in Norway. Kristin made the score for the movie Factotum (Bukowski/Bent Hamer) in 2005. Kristin collaborates with the jazz pianist Tord Gustavsen (ECM). -

Komponisten, tekstforfatteren og verket utgjør det første leddet i den musikalske nærings kjeden. En av NOPAs viktigste oppgaver er å løfte frem det norske repertoaret. Vi har hatt Sammen med GramArt laget NOPA kampanjen #utenmusikk særlig fokus på å løfte frem repertoaret medlemmene har for å rette oppmerksomheten mot innholdet i loven. -

As a youth he played SE/CVR Nr.:32978665 flute and alto sax, studied drums, recorded as a singer, guitar player and bandleader, and Bank: Handelsbanken then commenced professional studies on the bass at the Helsinki Pop & Jazz Conservatory. Reg.: 7621 Laukkanen later concentrated on composing and arranging, with Henrik Otto Donner ao. as Konto Nr.: 2137244 his teacher, and studied conducting with Maria Schneider. Laukkanen continued his studies at the Sibelius Academy, where he earned a Master of Music degree in Jazz Composition. Currently he is writing a doctoral dissertation on jazz rhythm at the Doctoral Study Program of Music and Drama in Finland. Jere Laukkanen is currently working as Head of Degree Programme and Senior Lecturer at the Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, Degree Programme in Pop and Jazz Music. He is a much sought-after arranger, composer and conductor, and has written for all major Finnish television channels and numerous orchestras, including UMO Jazz Orchestra, Vantaa Pops Orchestra, and Lahti Symphony Orchestra. Besides his own band, Jere Laukkanen Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra, for which he is the sole composer and arranger, he has conducted jazz orchestras like UMO, Berklee Jazz Composers’ Big Band (USA), Radio Romania Big Band, and Estonian Dream Big Band.
