The most important concept in a NRW reduction effort is the ‘Awareness, Location & Repair’ or ‘ALR’. In this concept, any leak has to be dealt with in the shortest time possible to minimize the amount of water loss. The longer leaks happen, the more water will be lost. We have to be aware of the leak occurrence as soon as possible, have the leak located as soon as possible and have it repaired the soonest possible. The state of Kelantan is situated north of Malaysia, bordering Thailand. The water supply operation is managed by a state owned company, Air Kelantan Sdn PROJECT DETAILS Bhd (AKSB). AKSB manages 7,500 km of pipeline and about 250,000 customer accounts, with a treated Location: water production of 480 Million Liters Per Day (Mld). The state of Kelantan, Malaysia

The Kelantan state has been facing a high NRW level of Client: more than 50% for many years. Aged assets has largely Air Kelantan Sdn Bhd contributed to the water losses. However, the effective reduction of NRW would involve a big capital Project Value: investment and this has been a major hurdle for AKSB. RM45 Million In February 2013, RWS has been awarded with a 2-year Duration: NRW reduction contract by AKSB. The scope of work 2 years mainly involves the establishment of DMAs, Active Leakage Control, Reservoir Monitoring and Pressure Management.

At the end of the 2-year contract, RWS managed to KEY ACHIEVEMENTS reduce the NRW level from 53% to 47%, saving 68 Mld in the process. In addition, RWS established 40 more DMAs to make a total of 190 DMAs in the state. • Establishment of 40 DMAs Furthermore, more than 53,000 leaks found and repaired within the contract period. • Maintenance of 190 DMAs

• Reduction of NRW level from 53% to 47%

• Optimization of production and maximized billing revenues

• Improved supply pressure for customers

LEAKAGE REDUCTION CONTRACT 05 FOR RIYADH CITY, SAUDI ARABIA

Riyadh is the capital of Saudi Arabia with a population of approximately 6.5 million, covering a vast 1,800 km2 area. Due to the lack of surface water in the country, PROJECT DETAILS water supply mainly comes from underground water and desalinated water from the sea. Location: Riyadh City, Saudi Arabia The municipal water supply, managed by the National Water Company, is obtained from a desalination plant Client: located 450 km away. The water scarcity and the high Saudi Tumpane Pte Ltd cost of treated water production makes water a valuable commodity in Riyadh. Project Value: RM17 Million The city of Riyadh experiences intermittent water supply due to shortages and therefore, leakage Duration: management is more important than ever to ensure 30 Months. Completed in 2011 adequate supply to customers. Intermittent supply also causes pressure surge within the system which can cause pipe breakages and supply cuts. The demanding condition posed a real challenge since leak detection activities and repairs can only be done effectively during water supply schedule with immaculate planning KEY ACHIEVEMENTS and coordination. • Establishment and maintenance of At the end of the contract, the leakage level for the 45 45 DMAs DMAs reduced from an average of 37% to 13%, saving 54 Mld in the process. • Physical Loss saving of 54 MLD

• Reduction of NRW level from 37% to 13%

TCOT was originally Aug 2014 – Dec 2016 constructed in the early 1980s and was designed to produce 240 kbd of stabilized crude containing 0.5% Basic Sediment and Water (BS&W).

The stabilization system consists of 2 trains with crude heating and separation facilities. The design basis crude composition includes a maximum water content of 5% by volume. However, the current incoming BS&W of 16-37% (vol) in the inlet crude oil to TCOT process facilities is much higher than the maximum water in the original design. The volume of water being sent from offshore platforms for the volume of oil production has increased over the years since the TCOT facilities were first commissioned in 1983.

In addition, TCOT is facing sand accumulation issues, contributing to emulsion destabilization. Due to these various issues at TCOT, a separation improvement and desanding system will be implemented that covers major modification of separation trains, equipment upgrading, installation of sand removal system, Instruments improvement and modification of related piping network.
