Fellow Countrymen!
Beginning the publishing of the new Polish newspaper in such a large size from the start, as you can see before you – we examined very well the difficulties with which we will be faced that in near future may prevent spreading of our newspaper – but despite all of this we had the courage to start our publication regardless the considerable financial cost and enormousness of the intellectual work. Today, due to the considerable competition from numerous Polish publications and a large percentage of Polish readers, which exists among the Polish people, there is a need for a certain dose of courage for risking considerable capital, where we cannot be certain whether it will be returned or bring any fruits at all.
Outside the financial side of our enterprise, publishing this paper alone is connected with various unpleasant situations, which can be felt especially here in America, such as many misunderstandings partly with some of the readers and partly with atrocious attacks against us from some editors of other newspapers who consider this writing as sort of factory of pudretów [the face-powder], guano or other not very scented products.
The first evil we will be trying to repeal by raising the education among our readers, who need it - either through publishing proper articles aiming at spreading universal information in the language which is accessible to everyone – we won’t forget to treat a part of our newspaper with the style and quality that will meet the demands of the inteligent part of our society.
This way we will be trying to create from our newspaper the body that will be interesting to the poor as well as the rich, educated and not [educated], men and women. „Polonia“ will be far from promoting discord or disagreements among various classes of our society, of course acting according to the principle: „United we stand, divided we fall“ – our task will be - resolving differences, reconciling conflicting sides - in general finding a sort of modus vivendi between our living elements that stay in everlasting strife, which is encouraged by some Polish newspapers which abuse their position for this purpose.
We will be keeping away from engaging into illicit harassments and incitements, and instead we will be fighting off any signs of such behavior without engagement into private polemics and simply scorning the well-known method of maligning, spitting and gaining from our people, which are so easy to beguile, trust at the expense of humiliating the opponent on patient paper with the pen moistened in the inkwell that is full of the venomous content.
In the content of our newspaper we will place introductory articles concerning current events from our taken parts of Poland or the matters regarding our society in exile in America, into which we will include issues relating to: our associations, education, promotion of our language and preservation of its clarity, writing movement, our relations with other nationalities, our position on the American politics, movement of our people and growth of our settlement etc. As we highlighted our goals, we kindly ask all our fellow countrymen for sending to us all sorts of suggestions and advices from every corner of this country so that we can include all possible sources of information, which otherwise would not be available to us.
Next, we will include political, social, and family information from every part of Poland based on the sources that will directly derive from the Polish newspapers in Europe; and in order to realize the above goal we have taken appropriate steps toward acquiring the first-rate newspapers from the old country. Also, we will also give information according to the earlier highlighted direction about the Polish relations in America, and it will be the first-hand information if it will reach us either through the help of other Polish newspapers, or daily American newspapers, or also the information kindly acquired from the correspondence of our countrymen.
We will use the information from the correspondence with our readers either indirectly by using only certain elements there included, or directly by publishing a complete and original letters of our readers, provided that they have interesting and useful content or style that is suitable for our newspaper. According to the old custom, in the comic section of the paper, which will be resurrected by "The Little Corner of Mr. Osa," we will be trying to fight mistakes and defects of our society with the help of the satire and joke and the single characters through the use of the poems or prose as well as such comical characters like “Kuma Wojciechowa,“ „Krzykajło,“ and similar comical characters - we will be mixing up occasional articles with the humorous form - and also we will be placing in our newspaper the articles treating more serious matters as well as the cheerful ones, affecting the heart as well as the mind – emotion as well as the humor – and it will be guiding and entertaining - enlightening and cheering; and we will be to you Our Beloved Countrymen both a teacher and a friend. Also, we will include in this section of the newspaper a variety of riddles, charades, and puzzles for solving of which we will occasionally be giving an award in order stimulate intensity of the thinking our readers and further develop their thinking technique.
Part of our newspaper will include section dedicated to novels and romances so that our readers could get acquainted with most precious samples of literary pieces of our writers – and at the same time will be promoting the notions of inquiry into the characters of the people and nations – and through the historic novels we will promote the notion of our history.
Also, we will include in our newspaper the newest and most balanced information about important political and social affairs from around the world, which is absolutely necessary for anyone who happens to leave during this century. Moreover, we will keep our readers from Baltimore up to date about the newest market prices and will include the list of Polish letters that are overdue at the post office and could not be delivered due to the lack of the correct address of the addressee.
Finally, we won’t forget to include brief biographic information of our famous men, who whether directly or indirectly have worked for the good of our nation. Thus, we will have the opportunity to express our recognition for their achievements, and at the same time, give opportunity to all classes of our nation to know them better. Having tried to incorporate a variety of information into our newspaper, we are convinced that we will fulfill all requirements of our male and comely female readers. (for who we will prepare more than one surprise); we think, that after closer acquaintance, we will be able to gain mutual support.
We are far from having the desire of getting financial gains from publishing our newspaper – we will be very happy when we will be able to create the newspaper that is healthy, genuine, not infected by the gangrene of the self-interest and digging in someone’s heels. We hope that we will receive support of our fellow countrymen, and our work at the newspaper would provide us with the financial support that suits the dignity of the honestly workingman.
We will support everything what is ours and Polish with the warm feeling of our patriotism - with all our power we will be driving back our enemies who aspire to deprive our people of their national identity and our family soil, which reminds us of our history, our fathers – our precious golden crib, where our mothers swung us their dziatki [babies] to dreams with Polish lullabies instilling in our hearts love for our homeland and Faith of our Fathers. Hence, our motto is „in the name of Faith and Homeland.“ Having Believed that the Polish national identity is inseparably integrated with the Catholic faith - it is certain that with removal of this faith our patriotic spirit, which is the only amalgam linking all our elements, would have to tumble down - and hence the extermination of our entire nationality would be inevitable. So, we will always strongly support the principles of our holy faith everywhere and defend it against any attacks as much as our strength will allow us.
Having submitted to You dear Brothers our faith, our tendencies, and goals, having given you the entire program of the future newspaper - we are urging you to support our weekly newspaper by ordering the subscription and sending the subscription fee– and we from our side will not forget to fulfill our pledges.
On the occasion of the coming New Year accept the sincerest wishes from the entire publishing company of our newspaper – most of all wishing you the peace of the spirit and the heart - sincerity and openness of the mind - to our women wining the hearts of the lovers - to our men to the contrary winning the hearts of their chosen ones – and we wish to everyone individually two million dollars in gold.

We will be issuing our newspaper on the good quality paper even though it will involve increased costs of the newspaper; our newspaper will be issued in a large and legible font – we equipped the printing house of „Polonia“ in variety of ornamental fonts to enhance aesthetic look of our newspaper.
Since our newspaper will be issued on every Thursday of the week, we will try our best to deliver our newspaper to all our readers in a timely fashion so even the readers who live in the most distant parts of the United States will receive it no later than on Saturday – our newspaper will be dispatched day and night.
Due to the enormous costs of our enterprise and the extensiveness of our newspaper, the cost of annual subscription will be two dollars. Those who will pay the full amount of the annual subscription in advance will receive either the Marian Calendar for the year of 1892, or the picture of the religious content presenting the picture of St. Walenty that is placed above the altar in Our Lady of the Blessed Holy Rosary Church in Baltimore, Md.

Philadelphia, Pa. 22 December 1891 Dear Sir! I would like to place following message in your newspaper: Dear Honorable Old Comrades and Brothers! My heart overflows with the joy that we finally, after so many years, lived to see the publishing of „Polonia;“ it is something that for so long we have been waiting for. Also here in Philadelphia, „Polonia“ (the newspaper) and Polonia (the community of Polish people) are famous and in full bloom. There are an increasing number of the Polish businesses and plants that are being established here thanks to the support of our fellow countrymen. According to the old saying: „ The more children there are, the more prayer is needed, and where there is much prayer, God grants his blessing.“ So, we should not think or say that we have enough of everything. It is truth that we have lots of everything, but we always need more, especially brotherly love and kindness to one another. Dear brother, when you establish any kind of business that goes well, and someone else sees that and follows your example; do not hold the grudge against him; do not curse him. POLISH PRIESTS IN BALTIMORE, MD. „Polonia“ Weekly
The Parish Priest of the St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish
Jan Rodowicz
The parish pastor Jan Florjan Joseph Wincenty Rodowicz was born on July 24th 1832 in city of Kruki, in Szawelski district, province of Kaunas [Polish name: Kowno] in Lithuania. He attended theological courses at universities in Wornie, Innsbruck and Munich. He received higher holy orders in Wornie on the 28th of March in 1859.
He came to America on the 13th of May 1870 and he was a priest in Milwaukee, Wis., where two holy temples [churches] built by him attest to his involvement. For past 10 years, he has been in Baltimore, Md., and the new church of St. Stanislaus Kostka is also his work.
Ks. [Rev.] Rodowicz was a teacher at a seminary in Milwaukee, Wis[consin] and is one of the oldest honorary members of the Polish National Alliance in the United States of north America.
The Parish Priest of the Our Lady of the Blessed Holy Rosary Parish
Peter Chowaniec
The parish pastor Peter Chowaniec was born on 17th of January 1856 in Posada zarszyńska, in the Sanock district in Galicia (Galicia - a region in eastern central Europe, north of the Carpathian Mountain).
He completed secondary school schools in Jasło (Jasło – a town located in south-eastern part of Poland), whereas he attended theological courses at the seminary in Przemyśl (Przemyśl is the second oldest city in Poland after Cracow; it lies on River San in south-eastern part of Poland), where he also received lower holy orders.
In 1881 he came to america and settled in the city of Buffalo, N.Y., where in 1880 he also received higher holy orders. Later, he moved to Brown Co., Wis., where he 7 parishes at the same time, which were made up of various nationalities: Poles, Czechs, Germans, and Americans. After some time he took charge of 6 parishes in Swan River, Min. as follows: Perham, Stephan, Aven, Browsville, Brockway, and Swan River, where he built the churches and established parishes. Currently, since y. 1887, he is a permanent resident of Baltimore, Md., as the parish priest of Our Lady of the Blessed Holy Rosary church, which was built thanks to His efforts.

Curate Priest of the St. Stanislaus Kostka parish JÓZEF SKRĘTNY Assitant pastor Józef Skrętny was born on the 11th of October of 1866 year in Nieżychowo, wyżyski district, in Grand Duchy of Poznań (Poznań is also known as Posen – German name for Poznań; it was created in 1815 by the Congress of Vienna and lasted until 1848; Prussian administration changed its name to the Prussian Province of Posen, but Polish people, especially Polish elite, continued to call it the Grand Duchy of Posen; today it is mid-western part of Poland).
He attended theological courses in Levanium in Belgium, where he also received higher holy orders on the 4th of July of 1890.
On the 29th of August, he arrived in America and holds a position of assistant pastor to the reverend pastor Jan Rodowicz, a priest of the aforementioned parish, and he is a strong mainstay for his aged parish priest.

The Address of Mrs. Teofilia Kremer from New York to the Pan-American Congress
Since none of Polish magazines issued in the United States brought itself for literal putting of the memorable speech our lovely patriot Mrs. Teofilia Kraemer, which with the known success she held in Pan-American Congress on the day of October 12th, 1891 in Philadelphia - and having the opportunity of rescuing this speech for future generations by the announcement of such in the columns of our newspaper - we are publishing its literal sound in English language and the Polish translation. About activity of Mrs. Kraemer within the domain of patriotic surges we will still have planty of opportunities to talk about.

Today for the last time he is breathing An old and infirm man – He is moaning, grumbling, coughing, sneezing As though he just had eaten the devil.
What good have you done During the one year of yours – One was ill, and the other one died. And whereas the third one got mad –
That one then again went bankrupt, The wife escaped somewhere from the other, Other then again badly aimed Because there was a healthy hare, and a dog died.
And whereas the girl betrayed that one And gave him the finger – And everything had happened Because of you: Yuck! And hoick!
This virgin is wringing her hands Because the lover let her go – And she is complaining to her dear mum About the bad year, about the bad lot.
Here again salonista (Salonista – the owner of the salon/bar), Continuously is cursing you, That he didn't take advantage of you at all, Because the thirst was bad.
And also those newspaper people They are cursing as to the dog – Ther are readers as many as in "Bazaar," and there is profit for dudu [a very little].
What do you know about the subscriber! He is so worn out, old piece of junk – For this you will have present from us, sticks, club, whip.
Tomorrow the young girl will see Our earthly small world here – And in this small world Everyone will be glad.

Prophecies of the 100 years old Calendar
What will happen in 100 years?
31 December 1991 - we will not be celebrating the New Years Eve.
1 January 1992 - will be the beginning of the year, when the presidential election of disconnected States of southern Russia will be held. 2 January – Mr. Kalasanty Dobrynos [Good-nose] will be celebrating 125th years jubilee of the moment in which his good nose for the first time smelt God's world.
3 January – The main agent of our newspaper bought a lot of the value of 30 dollars (mortgage will remain 22).
4 January - A scientific magazine will be issued, p.t. [under the title] Heca, Kieca koło pieca [Lark, Dress next to the stove], the first editor will be Mr Niw... from Ba…
5 January – Some Polish newspapers will stop using salon expressions (the word salon has double meaning).
6 January – „Polonia“ will be dispatched in the number of 10 millions issues.
Mr. Krzykajło (The name Krzkajło is derived from someone who yells and screams a lot)
One will not believe what is happening in this world! My whole body is still shivering. Not long time ago this madman from NowegoYorku wanted to blow up with dynamite the millionaire Sage together with his clerks. When I remind myself about this, I feel like I am going to faint, and what if entire tenement collapsed and by any chance I was passing by that way; Oh, Saviour, what if the brick was to hit my head, so it would be already end of you Krzykajło and nobody would hear your warning voice any more. After this madman others began to multiply; they started to shoot with dynamite, to write threatening letters, I am afraid to even think about it, and even such a millionaire and noble like Jay Gould got fear and stopped going to the office on Broadway because he was afraid that someone will breake his nose off with dynamite; not beaten into the top of my head I too decided to take my legs by the waist and I legged to Baltimore because here the streets are not as narrow as the streets in New York, that is at least it is possible to escape when the tenement building will start bashing. But my calves still shiver from that, because it is better to be safe than sorry, anyone who wants can laugh at me, but I know that to be square dynamite isn't an onion!
How after this madman others had begun to multiply; they started to shoot with dynamite, write threatening letters, one is afraid to think about what else, and how such a millionaire and [nobleman] like Jay Gould got fear and stopped coming to the office on Broadway because he was afraid that someone would shoot off his nose; and so [not stupid] I held legs in by the waist and farther legged it to Baltimore because here streets are not as narrow as in New York, that at least it is possible to escape in case the tenement will start bashing. But the calves always still shiver under me because when one is guarded he is being guarded by God (strzeżonego Pan Bóg strzeże), and let I be mocked by whoever wants it, I know that dynamite isn't onion and that's it!

But those who banqueted there in the inn Only continued to watch the wanderers And how it is often useful in the pranks Amongst them they got to know the Jew there. Suddenly, in all of this one from the drunken circle, Cries out this way with his concept to the Jew: „Tell us leku or else an evil spirit will kidnap you how far it is from us to Jerycho?“ Soon they surrounded him in the great multitude: „And show us what do you have in this bundle?“ Second then again threw himself at him at the moment: „You must pay for what we drank!“ Other whereas is sneering at him since he is a quick rascal, That one in the bundle is searching traps In the end the last one not a lot of thinking – He is pulling him into the dance and wants to go with him into lively dances. News from Baltimore.
Theatrical Work [Play] by the School Children
During the 25th and 27th day of this month, at the parish school of St. Stanislaus Kostka, thanks to the efforts of Felician Sisters from Detroit the school play took place for the profit of the church of the aforementioned parish. The plots of the theatrical performances constituted of the images from the biblical history referring to the Birth of Christ the Lord. On the nice decorated stage there was creche with the baby Jesus laid on hay in the manger; on both sides of the manger there were the most holy Virgin Mary and St. Joseph; next to the creche there was a little angel and above it there was a choir of angels; everything with the exception of the baby Jesus consisted of live persons. In a few scenes the main characters that accompanied the main episodes of giving birth of Christ were introduced, and included as follows: the dream of shepherd boys - waking them up with chants of angels - bringing gifts to the Lord Jesus, three kings are introducing themselves to Herod - they carry gifts - fleeing of the Most Saint Virgin Mary with St. Joseph and baby Jesus, order of Herod to kill all children, and finaly a group pf all persons and choir of girls (Christmas carols). The entire play was carried out by school children of the St. Stanislaus Kostka parish and it came off superbly. We never expected to see in our young generation so much verve, where many of our adult amateur artists could put themselves to shame when seeing with what courage these school children played entrusted them roles. We couldn't see any sign over of the stage fright which is so often taking control over many persons during their performance on the stage; and most importantly, our little actors and actresses knew their roles superbly, unlike the way it often happens differently to us. Each of the spectators left the place of the show with sorrow and many sighs broke free from the breast up after the happy youthful years. Bravo our children and special thanks to our Felician Sisters.
The next show will be held on the day of the New Year, that is on January 1st, 1892. And so hurry countrymen for this spectacle to remind yourself about youthful years, to refresh heart, and and to make the contribution to the God's glory.
THE NEW PICTURE
To the local church of Our Lady of the Blessed Holy Rosary arrived one of the finest canvassing in the picture of St. Walenty. This image, which is of great sizes and of the outstanding brush, was hung above the large altar. Above the figure of St. Walenty, who blesses large crowds of people swarming at his feet, rises an angel keeping the sash with the inscription: St. Walenty Pray for Us. Under the image there is the following inscription: Franciszek and Antonina from Dojasy Morawskie in y. 1891. with the effort of ks. [Priest] P. Chowaniec. There was taken a photograph of this image, and the publiseher of „Polonia“ Mr. Welzant will try to aquire relevant oil reproductions, which could be purchased in his store at 603 S. Bond, Baltimore St. Md. Subscribers, whereas, which will pay the subscription of „Polonia“ for the entire year in advance will receive this image at the request [free of charge].
THE GUEST FROM NEW YORK
During the 10 days of Christmas enetrteined here citizen Jan Służewski from New York, who maintains the factory of woman's coats at the number 186 [L]udlow street, visting here his brothers Franciszek and Tomasz along with his honourable wife. Mr. Służewski He repeatedly visited our editorial section and he was kind even to accept our agency in New York. We said goodbye to him with sorrow on the 27th of this month with the promise of our near visit in New York.

Fair for the Profit of Construction of the Church
For the profit of construction of the new more extensive church - because it turns out that the current one is relatively much too small for the parishoners - a parish priest ks. P. Chowaniec set up the fair at the school of the parish of Blessed Virgin Mary of the Holy Rosary, which started on Tuesday, d. [day] 29th b.m. [of the current month]. On account of the nobility of the purpose we aren't doubting that all Poles will take the most active part in this extremely pleasant fun, especially that there will be a lot of useful and possible to win valuables - and fortune is fickle - brought up with hands of our Polish virgins.
A Strange Marriage
Andrew I Bowers, native of Richmond, Va, filed a complaint at the local district court Nr 2 for the divorce with Ema A. Bigelowa on the basis of very strange circumstances. He testified in court that he was already married and was forced by the father and the brother of Mrs. Ema to conclude the second marriage. Standing at the corner Lombard and Calvert Streets last Tuesday, unsuspicious of the disaster that soon would take place, he suddenly noticed the father and the brother of Miss Ema armed into the revolver before himself ordering him to get on immediately the carriage, which carried them to the apartment of Miss Bigelow. Having arrived in place, he was led into the room in which Mr. Bigelow, not dropping revolver from the hand, had urgently guarded him while his son ran for the priest in order to immediately settle the ceremony of the marriage. After the short time the marriage ceremony was concluded against his will. From official sources from 2 June they became convinced about the licence of the conclusion of the marriage ceremony by the 20-year old Berta Roop and 24-year old Bowers. If the marriage ceremony indeed took place, of which they have not convinced themselves yet, then the other marriage is of no consequence. The fact is that Bowers chased girls little caring about love and the marriage ceremony and after getting acquainted with Ema promised this to marry her; he seduced the girl by no means thinking of fulfilling the given word and only by the earlier given way the father and the brother of Miss Ema impelled him to the conclusion of the marriage ceremony. Of course, neither the father nor the son knew about the fact that Bowers had already been married.
In „Echo“ from Buffalo we are reading the romantic rhyme which we are giving as concerning us.

Administration of „Polonia“ wants to become an intermediary between Polish employers and workers free of charge - asks then all Polish businessmen and manufacturers to contact our administration, if they needed the worker, and hence helped us with relieving of the repeated unemployment of our workers.
To Polish Workers. Let anyone who is looking for work report to the Administration of „Polonia,“ which will try to, whenever possible, facilitate for him receiving an appropriate job.
