The young woman, abandoned on the island of Naxos by Theseus, is depicted here at the moment in which Bacchus arrives before her. The god of wine and intoxication, seeing her desperate, wanted to marry her. For this wedding, Bacchus gave her a golden diadem created by Hephaestus which, launched into the sky, went to form the constellation of the Corona Borealis. Bacchus in the copper examined wears a large red cloak and under it wears a cheetah skin. Arianna, on the other hand, is naked and only a cloth wraps part of her body, only partially hiding her nudity. The young woman sits near a fountain surrounded by cupids. The work is to be ascribed to the hand of Mariano Rossi, a painter trained in Palermo with Filippo Randazzo. In 1744 we know it in Naples in the workshop of Francesco Solimena, with whom he learned the technique of good fresco. In 1750 the painter moved to Rome where he collaborated with Marco Benefial and, in 1766 he was welcomed to the Accademia di San Luca. His art expresses an excellent synthesis of the best Neapolitan craftsmen, demonstrating a careful study of the examples of Solimena, Luca Giordano and Corrado Giaquinto, but renewed by Roman classicism with results of the highest quality. Rossi's fame is mainly due to the fresco made for the vault of the entrance hall of Villa Borghese in Rome, depicting the Apotheosis of Romulus welcomed by Jupiter in Olympus (1774) and for having painted The Dream of Pope Innocent III in the church of Santa Maria all'Ara Coeli. Commissioned by the king of Naples, Ferdinand IV, he then decorated the vault of the hall that acts as an antechamber to the royal apartments of the Royal Palace of Caserta. In this hall, the painter also depicted The marriage of Alexander the Great with Rossana (1787). The works of Mariano Rossi, recognized as one of the greatest painters of the Italian eighteenth century, can be found throughout Italy and especially in Sicily, where, among many companies, he 1 / 3 anticSwiss 02/10/2021 08:00:41 http://www.anticswiss.com painted the basin and apse of the Cathedral in Palermo. In 1767 he returned to Sciacca, painting works for the various city churches including: the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in the church of Giummare and The Virgin who consoles souls for the church of Purgatory. His career was marked by prestigious assignments: in addition to commissions at the Royal Palace of Caserta, in Turin he created the frescoes of the second chamber of the archives of the Royal Palace (1770-71).
