A BY·LAW TO AMEND BY·LAW NO. 7718 "A BY·LAW TO ADOPT A NEW COMMON SEAL OF THE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF KINGSTON, AND TO CANCEL AND ABOLISH THE COMMON SEAL NOW IN USE BY THE SAID CORPORATION" (Update To 2000)

The Council of The Corperalion of Ihe Cily of Kingslon hereby enacls as follows:

1. By·Law No. 7718 of The Corperalion of Ihe City of Kingslon entitled , 'A By·law To Adopl a New Common Seal of Ihe Corporalion of Ihe Cily of Kingslon, and 10 Cancel and Abolish Ihe Common Seal Now in Use by the Said Corporation-, is hereby amended as follows:

1.1. Seclion 3 is hereby amended to delele the words 'Clerk·Complrolier has certified Ihal he' and 10 substitute therefore the words ·City Clerk has certified that she", so that Section 3 shall now read as follows: "3. This By·Law shall come inlo force and lake effecl on the dale ll1allhe Cily Clerk has certified that she has received delivery of the new Common Seal of the Corporation of the City of Kingston.-

1.2. Schedules "A- and "B" are hereby repealed and the new Schedules "A" and "8" attached hereto are substituted therefore .

2. This By-Law shall come into force and take effect on the date of its passing.

THE SHIELD There are three central elements In the design. The Martello Tower is a unique, outstanding feature of Kingston's wateliron! and has symbolized the City for over 150 years. It symbolizes strength and firmness of resolve. Also, it rep resents Kingston's extensive military connections and its lengthy historical development. Above the Martello Tower are three golden Antique Crowns representing the three partner municipalities (the fonner Township of Kingston, the former City of Kingston and the former Township of Pittsburgh) which combined in 1998 to form the new City of Kingston. The antique crown is the traditional heraldic symbol for municipal corporations. The Blue and White Waves represent the confluence of three bodies of water in Kingston: Lake , SI. Lawrence River and the Cataraqui River/Rideau Canal system. The red background depicts the national colour of .

THE The Crest (the area above the shield) refers to the name of Cataraqui, one of Kingston's early names, and it is derived from the aboriginal word meaning "rocks rising from the water". It refers to the limestone fortifications and buildings which are a prominent feature of Kingston's past and present, rising as they appear to do from the water. The symbolizes the fu r trade that was the paramount reason for the founding of a settlement in the seventeenth century, which eventually became the Ci ty of Kingston. The Beaver is situated on a limestone rock thai rises from the bodies of water that surround Kingston. The bodies of water are symbolized by Btue and White wavy bands. The red on the symbolizes Canada's national colour.

SUPPORTERS Tile Shield is supported on the left by a Griffin commemorating Count Frontenac and the French foundation of the City of Kingston. Count Frontenac used two of these mythical animals as in his Coat of Arms. On the right, the represents Kingston's early British origins and is derived from the Coat of . Also, it refers to the fa ct that for a short period in the mid-nineteenth century, Kingston was the seat of government of the United Provinces of Canada. The collar of leaves around the neck of each represents Canada and the rural aspects of the City of Kingston

MOTTO SCROLL The outer edge of the Scroll and the words of the are depicted in gold referring to golden fields of crops, thus symbolizing the rural aspects of the City of Kingston. The blue band of the Scroll represents the bodies of water bordering the City of Kingston and it symbolizes the naval, shipbuilding, shipping and recreational sailing elements of Kingston's history.

MOTTO ANTIQUITATE CIVILITA TE HUMANITATE: This motto may be freely translaled as 'A CIVIL AND CREATIVE COMMUNITY WITH A PROUD PAST'.

FLAG According to the classic ru les of heraldry, the city's new Flag combines the principal colours and key elements of the Shield reshaped to serve as a banner. The three antique crowns are arranged to renect the geographical arrangement of the three former municipalities thai combined to form the City of Kingston.

BADGE The Badge consists of the Martello Tower from the Shield surrounded by a cIrcle of interconnected Maple leaves, with a red background symbolizing Canada's national colour.

And around the outer edge of the face of the seal the words "THE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF KINGSTON" and "ONTARIO"
