Alchemy FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Records September 8, 2014 Brian Rocha [email protected] Ryan Feldman [email protected] Burnt Belief Returns with commanding new release, Etymology Newest collaboration between U.K. bassist Colin Edwin (Porcupine Tree) and U.S. guitarist Jon Durant out October 21st Cohasset, MA—The duo of bassist Colin Edwin and guitarist Jon Durant have once again teamed up under their Burnt Belief moniker to release a new album of progressive ethno-ambient fusion instru - mentals titled Etymology. The pair first teamed up for Durant’s 2011 album Dance of the Shadow Planets, a wholly live in the studio documentation of their nascent musical chemistry centered around Durant’s atmospheric compositions and featuring also the talents of violinist Caryn Lin and multi-per - cussionist Jerry Leake. The follow-up to Shadow Planets, 2012’s eponymously titled Burnt Belief was distance recorded, but a fully collaborative compositional affair with Edwin taking equal responsibility for the writing process. Having confidently cemented their working methods and musical connection with the well received Burnt Belief, the duo undertook some live dates in the UK and Ukraine with Kiev based female vocal duo Astarta (as Astarta/Edwin), a project Colin has been working on for some time, but presently on ice due to the current instability in the country. Energized by working together in a live environment again, in late 2013, the duo reconvened to create the present album, Etymology. Whilst still retaining the strong sonic identity laid down on Burnt Belief, Etymology represents a considerable expansion and natural evolution of their sound, not least because of the additional input of three mar - velous drummers (Vinny Sabatino, Dean McCormick and Jose Duque) to complement and reinforce the programmed electronic rhythms. -

Concrete Poetry in England and Scotland 1962-75: Ian Hamilton Finlay, Edwin Morgan, Dom Sylvester Houédard and Bob Cobbing Greg Thomas PhD in English Literature The University of Edinburgh 2013 3 Abstract This thesis examines concrete poetry in England and Scotland from 1962 to 1975. Through the 1950s-70s, international concrete poetry evolved away from constructivist influenced, “classical” ideals of minimalism and iconic visual effect towards principles owing more to Dadaism and Futurism: spontaneity, maximalism, sonority and an emphasis on intermedial expression. Against this backdrop, using close textual analysis supported by primary research, I engage with four poets whose work collectively exemplifies the wide range of values which concrete poetry represented in England and Scotland during the period in question. A movement away from classical ideals can be tracked across the oeuvres of Finlay, Morgan, Houédard and Cobbing; but many aspects of their work cannot be accounted for by this general rubric. -

Version: July 2016 Hailing from the fertile Detroit music scene, T I L E S features Chris Herin (guitar, keyboards), Jeff Whittle (bass), Paul Rarick (vocals) and Mark Evans (drums). Formed in 1992 on the heels of a production deal with Gene Simmons of KISS, T I L E S has developed a structured-yet-spontaneous compositional style that blends the adventure of progressive rock with an aggressive hard rock edge. The band has released five studio albums worldwide and recently commemorated their 20th anniversary (with the original line-up intact) by issuing a pair of live recordings, “Off the Floor 01” & “Off the Floor 02”. Eight years after their last studio album, T I L E S returns with the mesmerizing magnum opus “Pretending 2 Run”. Wilson who, after first adopting the moni- ker Porcupine Tree in 1987, recruited an actual band under that name 6 years later and steered it to the point where, today, it’s at the top of its genre. For lack of an- » other name, that genre is still known as TWIN progressive rock. Call it what you will, but it’s the modern equivalent of what King Crimson trailblazed 4 decades ago. Acknowledging the link, Fripp guested on Porcupine Tree’s 2007 album, Fear of a Blank Planet. Tim Bowness: “A big no to both! I did find out after her death that my Mum had dabbled in theatrical productions and had dreams about being an actor, and my Grandmother (who lived next door) had been an accomplished Classical pianist. Despite that, music and the arts never figured highly in my household and my parents actively discouraged me from getting involved in bands.” “As for the area, the immediate surroundings - North Cheshire - were pretty dead in terms of venues and there was little to do except create entertainment yourself. Manchester and Liverpool were only twenty minutes away, so as a late teenager, I had access to a great deal more.!” Total Music: Did you play in any bands we may not have heard of in your formative years and what were you major influences? Tim Bowness: “A few, mainly in the Manchester and Liverpool areas. I‟d have been aged between 18 and 23. My three main pre No-Man bands were Still (from Manchester), After - or sometimes Always - The Stranger (from Warrington) and Plenty (from Liverpool). “Still had genuine musical scope and were quite original for the time I think. We were praised by the likes of Mark Radcliffe, but sadly it came to nothing. After The Stranger was more of a standard 1980s Indie Rock band in a Chameleons/Icicle Works/Smiths style. It had a grounding in King Crimson and Van Der Graaf Generator, so it wasn‟t wholly straightforward.
