Uberlândia: Instituto de Artes, Universidade Federal de Uberlândia, 2018. Esta pesquisa desenvolve reflexões e análises em torno da música e história do Rock Progressivo. Com o objetivo de se traçar um perfil histórico e musical, definindo também suas características mais notáveis, este trabalho contemplou uma descrição de suas origens, alguns de seus principais desenvolvimentos ao longo da história, e como progrediu até os dias atuais. O foco principal do trabalho está na atividade de novas bandas a partir da década de 1990. A pesquisa analisou, de forma descritiva, a carreira e a música de algumas destas bandas que tiveram um impacto considerável no Rock Progressivo e sua comunidade, ao longo do período em foco, traçando também comparações entre esta nova música e os trabalhos de outros artistas influentes neste subgênero nas décadas anteriores. Drafting a historical and musical profile as an objective, this work contemplated a description of its origins, its most notable characteristics, and how it progressed up until current days. The work is focused on the activity of new bands from 1990s onwards. The research analyzed, in a descriptive manner, the career and music from some of the bands that had a considerable impact on Progressive Rock and its community, over the fixated period, also tracing comparisons between this new music and the works of other influential artists in this subgenre on previous decades. Suas origens envolvem não somente desenvolvimentos tecnológicos e musicais, mas também socioculturais, abrangendo o movimento da contracultura que acontecia naquela época. Apesar de ter surgido há cinquenta anos, podemos dizer que esta música é possivelmente mais prestigiada em dias atuais do que foi em algumas décadas anteriores, como por volta de 1980, mesmo que sua popularidade realmente tenha culminado no período em torno do seu surgimento, entre o final da década de 1960 e a primeira metade da década de 1970. Este projeto surgiu, inicialmente, devido ao meu interesse pessoal por este tipo de música. Ao longo de sua história, podemos encontrar diferentes épocas ao longo das quais o Rock Progressivo passou por adversidades, assim como algumas fases de transformação em sua sonoridade, mas sempre foi fonte de um tipo de música experimental e provocativa, expandindo e rompendo os limites do próprio gênero. Isso se deve pelo fato de que as bandas que criam este tipo de música se habituaram a trabalhar sobre um ideal bastante singular, o qual foi de se provocar deliberadamente a evolução do seu gênero musical de uma forma bem específica (ou seja, progredir). Isto aconteceu através da composição de obras complexas, inovadoras, e minuciosamente detalhadas, quebrando com diversas convenções do Rock, oferecendo ao ouvinte uma experiência singular. Ao se observar o trabalho destas bandas, assim como a bibliografia que estuda tal música, podemos citar brevemente algumas formas através das quais este tipo de progressão aconteceu: as bandas incorporavam diversos tipos de conceitos e narrativas na criação de seus álbuns, além da música, envolvendo também a arte e divulgação; acolhendo influencias externas, além da música ocidental; incluindo instrumentos exóticos; e utilizando técnicas de composição inspiradas na música erudita, além de inúmeros outros elementos. O objetivo principal deste trabalho é estudar e analisar esta música que é considerada Rock Progressivo, principalmente em torno da década de 1990, mas inclusive em décadas subsequentes, considerando também os principais eventos históricos que circularam os grupos responsáveis por esse trabalho. É possível se encontrar alguns estudos acadêmicos na área de música popular que estudam este subgênero do Rock, assim como um material bibliográfico considerável, os quais o abordam, principalmente, o período desde o seu surgimento até a sua primeira “crise”, que aconteceu aproximadamente no final da década de 1970. Alguns outros 2 materiais que comentam e consideram esta música nas décadas seguintes podem ser encontrados, entretanto, se focando especificamente sobre o Rock Progressivo a partir de 1990, são escassos, e ainda mais quando se considera a música lançada nas décadas atuais, o que é natural, já que estes tipos de estudos levam tempo. Pressuponho que, ao observarmos os eventos históricos em torno das bandas no subgênero, pode ser possível, além de se cumprir com os objetivos citados, revelar também alguns detalhes pertinentes aos estudos da música popular. Entre os grupos considerados, diversos foram independentes, e se consolidaram em suas carreiras através de festivais e redes de comunicação e distribuição de música underground, as quais não necessariamente tinham sua distribuição limitada aos seus respectivos países de origem. A observação de tais detalhes pode traçar a maneira com que uma “comunidade” de bandas surgiu no início da década de 1990, se desenvolvendo de forma independente e culminando em uma gravadora multinacional. Este trabalho não vai se limitar exclusivamente ao estudo do Rock Progressivo nesta década mencionada, mas vai também, a partir de uma discussão baseada na bibliografia existente, observar e estudar como foi o seu surgimento ao longo da década de 1970, citando as suas características iniciais. Assim como pretendo, brevemente, observar os desenvolvimentos em torno do subgênero na década de 1980. Desta forma entendo que seja possível criar uma referência consistente para comparação entre a música das décadas mais atuais, e essa mais antiga, possibilitando uma apuração mais minuciosa sobre detalhes como preservação de sonoridades, influencias, e também se realmente seria adequado se classificar cinquenta anos deste tipo de música dentro
