E-mail: [email protected] In 1974, the lofty ambition of a BBC drama producer to manufacture a ‘prestige’ international hit along the lines of Elizabeth R (BBC2, 1971) came unstuck. In this case study, the authors consider the plight of Churchill’s People (BBC1, 1974-75) during a time of economic strife in the UK and industrial unrest at the BBC, and ask how a series which combined so many skilled writers, directors and actors could result in such a poorly-received end product. Churchill’s People is also placed in a wider context to assess its ‘neglected’ status, the authors drawing parallels with other historical drama of the era. The series’ qualification for being ‘forgotten’ is considered in relation to its struggle in the ratings against strong competition, the ‘blacking out’ by unions of production at the BBC for eight weeks and the subsequent pressures on transmission times, prompting the authors’ consideration of a more qualified definition of ‘lost’ drama, i.e.

This arti- film locations cle addresses the creation of a ‘Soviet feel’ through the use of Helsinki locations in cityscapes films such as Gorky Park (Apted, 1983) and Telefon (Siegel, 1977) in the geopoliti- Helsinki cal context of the Cold War and Finland’s location as both a hub for international Soviet Union espionage and something of a border zone between the eastern and western power blocs. This analysis is connected to a broader consideration of Cold War geography, cinematic cities as body doubles and the ‘agentiality’ of urban spaces in film. In the opening shot of the Charles Bronson vehicle Telefon (Siegel, 1977), the camera pans down from a large, red-brick nineteenth-century Russian Orthodox church towards an empty street covered in snow. The morn- ing sky is sunless, grey and heavy. The cityscape is almost void of colour, painted in a palette of brown, beiges and greys. There is little traffic on the streets.     Players – Willie Bell – Hewn of Scottish granite Willie Bell was an unsung hero of Leeds United’s rise to prominence during the Sixties. He was never as big a name as his defensive compatriots, Gary Sprake, Paul Reaney, Jack Charlton and Norman Hunter, but he was a consistent force at left-back for the Yorkshiremen between 1962 and 1967. Always more than willing to risk life and limb for the cause and throw himself in where it hurts, Bell was an unashamed hard man, renowned for his determination and guts, difficult to beat in the tackle and a good distributor of the ball. Norman Hunter: “The real hard men were those who went into challenges without even sensing danger or caring how they might end up. They were truly fearless. Willie Bell was one of the bravest men I have seen in my life. He never blinked, he never flinched, he just went for it.” Bell was also a fiery individual who could be expected to stand up for himself when needs must, as evidenced by one incident in 1967. On their way to a semi final clash with Chelsea in the FA Cup, Leeds had to endure a marathon battle in the fifth round against Willie Bell ... Scottish hammer Sunderland and there was a crowd invasion towards the end of the second replay at Boothferry Park. Johnny Giles snatched a late winner from a dubious penalty, sparking a pitch invasion. Billy Bremner: “As the ball went into the Sunderland net, some of their supporters went wild. They surged on to the pitch to vent their displeasure in no uncertain terms and one fellow, twirling a haversack round and round in the air, made straight for Willie Bell.
