But how and why we make financial choices depend largely on local factors: Government regulations, regional banking operations and technologies and, most importantly, individual needs. Our research team has set out to explore how such influences are driving decisions about money in Myanmar, one of Asia's poorest countries that, until recently, was relatively closed to the outside world. Even today, as Myanmar's economy steadily opens up, many people still struggle to access the formal financial instruments like bank loans and credit cards that many of us take for granted. Afford Two, Eat One aims to explain how Myanmar's poor are formally and informally transacting, saving and investing—and to identify some of the vast opportunities for stimulating local financial activity. Our findings reveal both traditional practices and new trends shaping Myanmar's changing financial landscape, and they offer insights critical for developing future services that address the needs of the poor. Funded by the Institute for Money, Technology and Financial Inclusion at the University of California, Irvine, the team includes designers, analysts, strategists and researchers from Yangon- based Proximity Designs, design strategy consultancy frog, and Studio D Radiodurans. By collecting evidence, stories, photographs and other data, we aimed in particular to: • Build a comprehensive understanding of poor people's formal and informal transaction practices.. • Establish a baseline of findings, insights, and frameworks that will guide and inspire future developments in transformational services and concepts. • Identify opportunities for expanding use of and access to financial services and products in under-served and newly opportune areas. As our report shows in depth in the following section (Background & Context), Myanmar is at a defining moment in its history: The economy is expanding, international sanctions are easing, significant investments are pouring in, and land values are increasing dramatically. In some areas, property is more expensive than it is in nearby Singapore. Technology adoption is also sky-rocketing as Myanmar—previously on par with North Korea in terms of mobile adoption ranks—aims to catch up to its neighbours. The cell phone penetration rate is expected to increase by 50 per cent over the next three years, up from just 12 per cent today (Deloitte/Ericsson 2012). High-speed 3G wireless networks now being built will enable access to mobile computing for the first time in Myanmar. The country will have unprecedented choices, options and opportunities around money. This report presents a snapshot of Myanmar's local economic landscape from a qualitative, behavioural and cultural perspective. We’ve seen an unprecedented opening— shaped by President Thein Sein, democracy advocate Aung San Suu Kyi and others—that has transformed the political landscape. Yet despite this progress, Myanmar faces a future fraught with difficult political, economic, and social challenges. Myanmar was governed by military rule for more than 60 years, from its independence from Britain in 1948 through the 2012 elections. The damaging effects are still felt on many levels. Past repression of non-military-affiliated businesses casts a shadow over today’s entrepreneurs. Repeated demonetisation of Myanmar’s currency has eroded trust in the kyat. The 2003 banking crisis and a lack of central regulation still breed tensions between individuals and institutions. Finally, a legacy of foreign hostilities and economic sanctions makes investment and trade feel volatile and risky. ABSTRACT This thesis mainly consists of three empirical chapters related to understanding the characteristics, economic impact and the demand for gambling in Thailand. Beginning with a review of the theoretical and empirical literature, this confirms that socio-economic and demographic data are important determinants of the level of gambling participation and gambling expenditure. A Logit model is then used to estimate the participation of gambling. The results suggest that the number games, such as the government lottery, the underground lottery, are popular among old gamblers whereas football betting is popular for adolescents. In the past, most casino customers were old gamblers, but at present the number of young gamblers who participate in casino has considerably increased.

In fact, it’s quite hard to find a Thai who’s never bought a lottery ticket. That may not seem a particularly remarkable fact. But ask Thais how they decide which numbers to buy and things can get distinctly bizarre. The fact is, there are virtually no lengths Thais will not go to in order to get that winning combination of numbers. Gamblers the world over pray to their gods for success and inspiration, or simply to be given one last chance to hit the big time. But few – in the West anyway – will head to church to ask their local vicar for lottery numbers. In Thailand, however, a visit to the temple or a shrine to pray for the right numbers is commonplace, and some monks have a reputation for being able to divine which digits will do the trick. Other Thais visit fortune tellers for lottery advice. When a respected Buddhist monk dies, many people will go to the monk’s temple to pay their respects but also in the hope of getting lottery hints – maybe the date of the monk’s birth or death or, if he was hospitalized before his death, the number of his hospital room. Other sources of numbers are car registration plates, addresses or telephone numbers. The system is very different compared to the western world. So, here is how it goes.

On the one hand, unemployment is argued to be a leading cause of gambling. On the other hand, gambling can cause unemployment in the second-order via gambling-induced poor health, falling productivity, and crime. In terms of significant effects, previous studies were able to establish an association, but not causality. The current study examines the time-sequence and contemporaneous causalities between lottery gambling and unemployment in Thailand. The Granger causality and directed acyclic graph (DAG) tests employ time-series data on gambling- and unemployment-related Google Trends indexes from January 2004 to April 2021 (208 monthly observations). These tests are based on the estimates from a vector autoregressive (VAR) model. Granger causality is a way to investigate causality between two variables in a time series. However, this approach cannot detect the contemporaneous causality among variables that occurred within the same period. The contemporaneous causal structure of gambling and unemployment was identified via the data-determined DAG approach. The use of time-series Google Trends indexes in gambling studies is new. Based on this data set, unemployment is found to contemporaneously cause gambling, whereas gambling Granger causes unemployment.

It aims to analyze the possibility of replacing lotteries with lottery- linked saving instruments issued by banks in order to boost the long term savings of the low-income group. Data used in this study are from preliminary survey of 4,000 observed poor in Bangkok. Results of the survey confi rm that lottery is the most popular fi nancial investment among the Thai poor in Bangkok since their face of limited investment alternatives. Their behaviors in terms of their buying lottery indicate the promptness of the poor in responding to the program of mobilizing their lottery-money to long term savings.
