Dear Roncalli Catholic Family: As the year draws to an end, I reflect on the first semester, my first as President of my alma mater. I have been blessed with the opportunity to get to know the faculty, staff, alumni, students and parents of the Roncalli Catholic family. It really is the people, each with their own story, their own role, that make our school special. Roncalli Catholic has a long-standing tradition of being a community that works together to prepare our young people for life. We are a Pride, a family working together to bring out the very best in each of our individual students. This was never more evident than in the opportunities I have had to visit with our students. One theme seems to be a constant throughout their stories. Our students say Roncalli Catholic is providing them with the academic and spiritual foundation they need to make her dreams and goals a reality. Ann O’Connor President With a record high enrollment of 410 students, 85% are able to attend RCHS because of Roncalli Catholic of tuition assistance, made possible by the on-going support of our entire community. High School Alumni, parents, past-parents, grandparents, and friends are all vital to continuing our mission of providing the next generation with a quality Catholic education to help them meet life’s challenges and opportunities with Wisdom, Courage and Faith. Beginning on (page 24), you will find a complete listing of the many donors who gave so generously to support our students and our mission during the last fiscal year. In this issue of Pride Magazine you will also find photos and stories about the dedication of our new S.T.E.A.M. Lab (page 6); our new alumni spotlight feature and alumni reunion stories (page 16); our outstanding students (throughout); and our 16th annual High Tea (page 8). Our December issue also serves as our Annual Report of financial activity for the 2014-2015 fiscal year (page 26). With Christmas right around the corner, our faith and gratitude will inspire our generosity and compassionate giving. As you know, our Annual Fund campaign is now underway and year-end gifts can be made on-line through our secure website. Support benefits each of our individual students and our entire school community through tuition assistance, facilities enhancements and on-going innovation in teaching. Please consider joining me in supporting this annual fundraising effort. As always, thank you so much for your support of our school and our mission.

Merry Christmas and Happy 2016!

Sincerely,

Ann O’Connor President Class of 1978

Brother Wilmot, SJ Creates Cross for Rchs Prayer Garden In October, a new cross was installed in Roncalli Catholic’s prayer garden. The donated spiritual art is the work of long-time school volunteer Brother Mike Wilmot SJ. Made 100% of railroad spikes obtained from rail yards in the Omaha area, the cross stands about four feet tall and is displayed on the ledge overlooking the quiet reflection area. Br. Wilmot has been sharing his spiritual artwork with the metro area for close to 30 years. Mostly crosses, his artwork can be found in or on the grounds of various Catholic schools, churches and even in homes. He has been known to donate his work to school and church auctions, such as Festa del Leone, for individuals to purchase. Perhaps the largest and most well-known Wilmot cross is on display in the courtyard between St. James Church and its school, standing close to 15 ft. tall. Wilmot said that one took several volunteers as well as a crane to install. Following a 30 year career teaching and coaching at Creighton Prep, Wilmot began volunteering to help coach our Crimson Pride basketball team in 2001. Br. Wilmot is the founder of Gesu Housing Inc., a non-profit organization that provides hard-working, lower-income families in the North Omaha community with the opportunity to purchase their own home. He felt called to help the community while working on the construction of the Jesuit Middle School of Omaha, which opened in 1996 and has become a leader in inner-city Catholic Education for boys in grades 4 - 8. The Roncalli Catholic prayer garden was created last Fall by then Senior Jared Nigrin (Roncalli Class of 2015), for his Eagle Scout project. Class Retreats led by NET Ministries This year, Roncalli Catholic’s annual Class Retreats were led by NET (National Evangelization Teams) Ministries of Minnesota, September 28 – October 1. According to full-time RCHS Chaplain Fr. Chi Igboanusi, the annual retreats inspire our students to fuel and live their faith. “The impact of the Class Retreats is so powerful,” said Fr. Igboanusi. “Through prayer and guided activities, the NET Team inspired and challenged our students to step-up and live their faith each and every day.” Since 1981, the organization has led more than 29,000 retreats, ministering to more than 1.7 million young Catholics. Roncalli Catholic’s 101 Seniors participated in a retreat called Leadership: A Reality Check; the retreat theme for 91 Juniors was Anchored in Hope; 134 Sophomores focused on Living Life to the Fullest as a Disciple; and the Freshman retreat for 122 students was called Inner Strength and Beauty as a Child of God.
