Page 3 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE By Stanley Hammer A House of Learning Torah Study with Yudit Natkin

We are well aware that Shabbat is the For several years our community has been the capstone or spiritual culmination of beneficiary of Yudit Natkin’s informative and well the week, when we come together for prepared Thursday morning discussion of the weekly services, community luncheon, and Torah portion. I attended Yudit’s class during the week Torah study. Too often, however, we preceding the reading of the portion Ki Tissa (ETZ overlook or fail to appreciate that HAYIM, p. 523). As is her custom, Yudit prepared thought during the weekdays Beth David provoking handouts, and with the class, examined verses offers valuable and inspiring chronicling what Southern Jews sometimes refer to as opportunities to study Torah. the “unpleasantness of the Golden Calf incident.”

Last month I gladly modified my work schedule for one Yudit led a discussion of Moses reaction upon week in order to attend our Torah and Talmud study and seeing the Golden Calf, his breaking of the Tablets and discussion sessions — regularly held on Tuesday and his dialogue or tense encounter with G-d. She also drew Thursday mornings at Beth David. These regular weekly an interesting comparison between Moses and Noah. classes or discussion groups reflect Beth David’s commitment to providing quality adult education “What Page Are We On?” programs. Beth David is fortunate in that several members of our Pirkei Avot with Rabbi Ben-Gideon congregation are skilled daveners and Torah readers; their familiarity with our Shabbat liturgy and synagogue Each Tuesday morning Rabbi Ben-Gideon and our rituals ensure a rich and traditional weekly service. At Director of Education, Jason Cathcart, lead a session the same time, many of our members report that our discussing portions of PIRKEI AVOT (depending on traditional service is sometimes difficult to follow, and which version you read, the translation is “Teaching of therefore less meaningful. the Sages” [Rabbinical Assembly Siddur] or “Ethics of the Fathers.” [Art Scroll]. In an effort to facilitate a better understanding and appreciation of our services, in March Rabbis Joshua I attended a Tuesday morning session and enjoyed and Rebecca Ben-Gideon will hold three classes participating in Rabbi Ben-Gideon’s spirited discussion exploring the history and structure of our Shabbat of PIRKEI AVOT, 1:16, in which Rabban Gamliel instructs service, including instruction on how to “navigate” the readers to “Make for yourself a mentor, remove yourself siddur. Please contact the synagogue office if you are from doubt and do not frequently tithe by estimation.” We interested in attending these sessions on consecutive discussed the interpretations of this verse. Sunday afternoons beginning March 17th.

Rabbi Ben-Gideon led the assembled group of inquisitive March Madness—and our 17th Annual Book Sale participants in a lively discussion of Rabban Gamliel’s instruction in light of Torah portions in Deuteronomy Finally, through our book sale we are providing adult addressing the role of rulers or kings, and in light of the learning opportunities for the greater community. Learning about our differences is informative and should help us find Rabbi Joshua Ben-Gideon respect for one another. In the face of these differences, discovering universal values is often inspiring.

The rabbis appreciated their differences with Dami and were inspired by their (our) shared value of respect for parents. My participation in the Greensboro Interfaith Clergy Mission at the beginning of February has resulted in a deepening of my appreciation for the religious life of our Christian brothers and sisters AND given me a deep font of inspiration for our shared values and goals—in the world, in North Carolina and right here in Greensboro.

Page 5 EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE By Corie Hampton On the third Monday of As services began, I immediately felt comfortable. Since January every year, we everything was in Hebrew, I was able to participate in the observe MLK Jr. Day. For service, just as I do here at Beth David. It dawned on me at many, that means a day off that moment, no matter where we are in the world as Jews, work or school. I thought about how this bridge barriers, create would affect the Jewish community; would women be solutions to social problems, participants in services? Would there be a mechitza (a and move us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a “Beloved dividing wall)? The Conservative movement has come so Community.” This year at Beth David, we cooked for our far since 1950, would the community members at Centro monthly StreetWatch program, which helps to feed Sefardi be aware of these changes? I got my answer when approximately 150 displaced individuals in downtown I entered Centro Sefaradi on Shabbat morning. The service Greensboro. was led by a young female hazzan.

While Beth David was contributing to those in our local The last shul we visited was Adath Israel, the orthodox shul. community, I had the opportunity to travel to Cuba on a It was great to see that even with a small Cuban Jewish mission with my Greensboro Federation Leadership community (1,500 people), there were still denominational Institute (G-FLI) cohort to contribute to the Jewish options to practice whatever form of Judaism felt community there. The trip to Cuba was an incredible experience. Our first day in Cuba we visited El Patronato, one of the three shuls in Overall, my visit with the Jewish community in Cuba was Havana. We learned that El Patronato has a huge pharmacy very rewarding. I was able to see first hand that there is an in its building where both Jewish and non-Jewish active and engaged Jewish community, even though community members can come get medicine. After religion was not common in Cuba for so long. It was good speaking with the president of El Patronato, we attended to be able to give back to a Jewish community in need of their Kabbalat Shabbat service. The service was led by our support. If you are traveling to Cuba soon, I highly community members and at the end a group of teenagers suggest arranging a visit with one or all of the shuls there! lead the closing prayers. This was followed by a community Shabbat dinner in the basement of the building. With the help of the North American Jewish community, El Patronato is able to offer Kosher chicken for Shabbat dinner, a true need since chicken is not easy to come by like it is here in the United States.

However, the next morning was by far my favorite experience of the trip. In the morning, we visited Centro Sefaradi, the Sephardic synagogue and community center for Shabbat morning services. This synagogue also has a pharmacy, and this is where all of the medicine we brought with us was donated. I wasn’t sure what to expect at first, would the service be all in Hebrew and I would be able to follow along, would they use Spanish and I’d be lost, could I follow the siddur? Their siddur had both Hebrew and transliterated text. The transliterated text was very fun to read, because it was transliterated for Spanish speakers.
