    B’er Chayim Bulletin February 2018 Shevat - Adar 5778 107 Union Street Cumberland, Md. 21502 301-722-5688 Cumberland Theatre production to feature Temple members B’er Chayim’s own Betsey Hurwitz-Schwab and Doug Schwab will be reprising the roles played years ago by Doug’s parents, Jane and Leonard Schwab, in two productions of the play Love Letters at the Cumberland Theatre. The show will be performed Saturday, February 17 and Sunday, February 18 as a fundraiser for the theatre’s Capital Improvement Fund. Written by A.R. Gurney, Love Letters was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The play centers on two characters, Melissa Gardner and Andrew Makepeace Ladd III, who sit side by side at tables and read the notes, letters, and cards that have passed between them throughout their separated lives. In them, they discuss their hopes and ambitions, dreams and disappointments, victories and defeats. Tickets are available on the Cumberland Theatre website and at the box office before each performance. B’er Chayim plans variety of activities to celebrate Purim Purim begins this year on the evening of Thursday, March 1 and will be celebrated at B’er Chayim over the course of several days. On Sunday, February 25 at 1 p.m., the Temple will host an after- noon of Hamantaschen baking. Some supplies will be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring their favorite dough, fillings, and tools.     The Origin of Mishloach Manot1 Rabbi Menachem Penner Max and Marion Grill Dean, RIETS • Rabbi, Young Israel of Holliswood • RIETS '95 The Reason for the Mitzvah of Mishloach Manot There are two classic understandings of the mitzvah of mishloach manot. The author of Terumat HaDeshen (Siman 111), Rabbi Yisrael Isserlin (Germany, 1390-1460), sees the gifting of food items as a way to ensure that every person has sufficient food for a proper Purim seudah. This would explain why according to the Maharil, mishloach manot must be food items that are ready to eat.2 If the receiver hopes to make use of mishloach manot delivered on the morning or afternoon of Purim, the food would need to be precooked in order to be served at the afternoon seudah. We already find the concept of caring for the poor and needy at times of joy in the Chumash. The Torah tells us with regard to the Shalosh Regalim: ְו ָש ֹ ַמ ְח ָתּ ִל ְפנֵי ה' ֱא ֶֹלקיָך ַא ָתּה And you shall rejoice before the L-rd your G-d, you, and your son, and ִוּבנְָך ִוּב ֶתָּך ְו ַע ְב ְדָּך ַו ֲא ָמ ֶתָך your daughter, and your man-servant, and your maid-servant, and the ְו ַה ֵלּ ִוי ֲא ֶשׁר ִבּ ְשׁ ָע ֶריָך ְו ַה ֵגּר ,Levite that is within your gates, and the stranger, and the fatherless ְו ַהיָּתוֹם ְו ָה ְאַל ָמנָה ֲא ֶשׁר ְבּ ִק ְר ֶבָּך and the widow that are in the midst of you, in the place which the L-rd ַבּ ָמּקוֹם ֲא ֶשׁר יִ ְב ַחר ה' ֱא ֶֹלקיָך .your G-d shall choose to cause His name to dwell there ְל ַשׁ ֵכּן ְשׁ מוֹ ָשׁם.

    Models of Religious Affirmation – Certainty, Skepticism, and Acceptance Leon Morris Rabbi Leon A. Morris is the President of Pardes. Our time is marked by great uncertainty. For many of us, contemporary theology is less about what we know to be true with absolute certainty, and more about religious ways of organizing and conceiving the world. We reflect upon God’s reality and our conception of ‘the good life’ while being keenly aware of all that lies beyond our full comprehension. We seek to connect with the other, to form communities of shared purpose, and to feel a sense of genuine continuity with the Jewish past. Many of us hunger for a sense of commitment and obligation that allows us to move beyond (but not entirely reject) our doubt and skepticism in order to give our lives a sense of deeper meaning and purpose. The Rabbis’ expansive reading of Esther 9:27 may provide us with just such an approach.     The Jewish Year: Celebrating Holidays The Jewish Holidays The Jewish calendar finds its origin in the colorful accounts of the history of the Jewish people. History provides the stories, meaning and direction in the lives of Jewish people. The Jewish year consists of 12 lunar months, with the beginning of every month (Rosh Chodesh – the New Moon) being a minor festival. In biblical times, the Sanhedrin fixed the new moons by actual observation, and the dates were announced by messengers from Jerusalem. Astronomical calculation later determined the dates. While time moves ever forward – time also moves in a circle. Day follows night, spring follows winter. The Jewish holidays punctuate the yearly cycle. To understand a holiday, we usually examine its historical development, and choose the way in which we are comfortable learning the special cus- toms associated with it. As those who came before us traveled through the calendar, liturgies were created in order to provide us with the meaning and teachings of each biblical text.
