From early research in the 1960’s until widespread availability by the 2010’s there has been steady progress towards the goal of being able to seamlessly combine real and virtual worlds. We provide an overview of the common definitions of AR, and show how AR fits into taxonomies of other related technolo- gies. A history of important milestones in Augmented Reality is fol- lowed by sections on the key enabling technologies of tracking, display and input devices. We also review design guidelines and provide some examples of successful AR applications. Full text available at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1561/1100000049 1 Introduction In 1977 many moviegoers were amazed as a small robot projected a three-dimensional image of a woman in mid air. With the words "Help me Obiwan-Kenobi, you’re my only hope", a recording of Princess Leia delivered a message that would change Luke Skywalker’s life forever. In this Star Wars1 scene, special effects were used to create the magi- cal impression that three-dimensional virtual content was appearing as part of the real world. The movie forecast a future where people could interact with computers as easily as interacting with the real world around them, with digital and physical objects existing in the same space. Thirty years later, in the 2008 US presidential campaign, a ver- sion of technology was shown for real. During the CNN election cov- erage reporter Wolf Blitzer turned to an empty studio and suddenly a life sized three-dimensional virtual image of reporter Jessica Yellin appeared beamed in live from Chicago2. Just like Princess Leia, she appeared to be part of the real world, but this time it was real and not through movie special effects. It had taken only thirty years for the Star Wars fantasy to become reality. The CNN experience is an example of technology known as Aug- mented Reality (AR), which aims to create the illusion that virtual images are seamlessly blended with the real world. AR is one of the most recent developments in human computer interaction technology. Ever since the creation of the first interactive computers there has been a drive to create intuitive interfaces. Beginning in the 1960’s, computer input has changed from punch cards, to teletype, then mouse and key- board, and beyond. One overarching goal is to make the computer interface invisible and make interacting with the computer as natural as interacting with real world objects, removing the separation between the digital and physical. Augmented Reality is one of the first technolo- gies that makes this possible. Star Wars and CNN showed how the technology could enhance communication and information presentation, but like many enabling technologies, AR can be used in a wide variety of application domains.

Hiyama (Editors) Evaluation of Virtual Reality Tracking Systems Underwater Raphael Costa1,Rongkai Guo2,and John Quarles1 1University of Texas at San Antonio, USA 2Kennesaw State University, USA Abstract The objective of this research is to compare the effectiveness of various virtual reality tracking systems underwater. There have been few works in aquatic virtual reality (VR) - i.e., VR systems that can be used in a real underwater environment. Moreover, the works that have been done have noted limitations on tracking accuracy. Our initial test results suggest that inertial measurement units work well underwater for orientation tracking but a different approach is needed for position tracking. Towards this goal, we have waterproofed and evaluated several consumer tracking systems intended for gaming to determine the most effective approaches. First, we informally tested infrared systems and fiducial marker based systems, which demonstrated significant limitations of optical approaches. Next, we quantitatively compared inertial measurement units (IMU) and a magnetic tracking system both above water (as a baseline) and underwater. By comparing the devices’ rotation data, we have discovered that the magnetic tracking system implemented by the Razer Hydra is approximately as accurate underwater as compared to a phone-based IMU. This suggests that magnetic tracking systems should be further explored as a possibility

Willis PhD, CAPM, LEED Green Assoc., P.Eng Concordia University Montreal Quebec The miniaturization and increased functionalities of next generation augmented reality (AR) devices, as well as advances in computing technology in the form of cloud computing, is moving the building construction industry closer to adoption of AR devices for use by building construction site personnel. There is therefore a need to understand the potential practical uses of next generation AR devices in building construction site work. A conceptualization of a next generation AR device suitable for use by site personnel is provided. Based on this conceptualization, a focus group of industry professionals and postgraduate researchers have determined that potential practical uses of such a device include: easy access to digital information to support work tasks, live streaming of videos of tasks being worked on, and easy creation of a repository of as-built photographs and videos. Potential applied research studies that will aid in the adoption of next generation AR devices by site personnel include those associated with usability testing, labor productivity measurement and improvement, and suitability testing based on nature of work tasks. The major implication of this exploratory study is that its findings will help to bridge the gap between next generation AR devices and practical use in building construction. There is also an additional ARToolkit entry in the general menu of unity. A bunch of example scenes are available for trials in ARToolkit5-Unity-->Example scenes. The simplest is SimpleScene.unity, where a red cube is attached to a "Hiro" pattern, like the simpleTest example in the original ARToolkit tutorials. The way ARToolkit for Unity organises information is simple: • The mandatory component for ARToolkit is called a ARController. Aside from managing the camera parameters (for example, selecting the video input), it also records the complete list of markers your application will use, via ARMarker scripts (one per marker). • A "Scene Root" will contain everything you need to AR display. It is a standard (usually empty) object with a AR Origin script. the rest of the scene will be children of it. • The standard camera remains basically the same, but is now driven by a specific ARCamera script. By default, the camera is a video see-through (like a webcam). • Objects to be tracked are usually "empty" geomeries (GameObject--> Create empty) to which one attaches a special AR Tracked Object script.

In order to introduce the user to a plausible, near to reality experience, we use augmentation methods to create an environment maintaining its physical properties, while three dimensional virtual objects and textures change it for the needs of a real time and controlled scenario. The augmentation is implemented using marker based techniques while the superimposed objects are rendered through the wearable equipment that the user is carrying. In the current implementation we try to blend intelligent non controllable characters that interpret the users’ choices and actions in order to intensify his or her interest for the story, while the real time events are being acted. The user is free to explore, interact and watch the desired events, while others are being carried out in parallel.
