The top seven for Hopkins were Zeke Nnaji, Andy Staf- ford, Dane Zimmer, Kerwin Walton, Charles Johnson, Rayquan Valentin and Andre Gray.

“In business, we have a saying, KYC, which means Know Your Client,” said Aphan Nnaji. “We do that in Dlayla Chakolis of Hopkins scores between basketball, too. Representing a program with seven state titles under coach Ken Novak Jr., Hopkins is coming off a 26-2 season that ended with a section upset loss to Wayzata. Most of that squad will be back.

The Hopkins girls have six state titles under coach Bri- an Cosgriff but have finished runner-up at state the last three years. They are clearly on a mission.

“We talk about that, right away,” said Tara Starks, who coaches the girls in the Pacesetter each year. “You’ve got to have a mission. Otherwise, what are you work- ing for?”

The girls were tough to score against, like their boy Hopkins’ Kerwin Walton finds a crease in the counterparts, and all parts of their game were humming. finals against Park Center. “Our defense was solid. We played well together. We shared the ball. Biggest thing was, we got up and down the floor really well,” said Starks.

The Royals are led by guard Paige Bueckers, generally regarded as the state’s best player. The other starters sere Dlayla Chakolis, Jaide Pressley, KK Adams and Amaya Battle, with Taylor Woodson and Sunaja Agara coming off the bench. They were missing a starting post, Maya Nnaji, who had another tournament.
