Laranth leaves, saying that she will set up the meeting with Yimmon, and I-5 asks that the group now vote on Sal's plan. But he had said them that day, and he knew what was coming next. Books by Michael Reaves. While Jax believes that I-5YQ holds some of those answers, he never imagines that the truth could be shocking enough to catapult him to the frontlines of a plot to kill Emperor Palpatine. Perfect justice! Making him sentient and giving him a presence in the Force cheapened the character's appeal, in my opinion. However, the entire series never moves far enough away from what feels like a role-playing adventure set in the Star Wars universe. Michael Reaves makes his home in Los Angeles. I-5 finally says that he wants to hear everyone's opinions before making his decision, but he will give Jax's view the most weight. Michael Reaves has written several other Star Wars novels since then. Jax begins to respond, but they halt the conversation rather than have it in front of Kajin. And an edited past at that. Things get complicated since Kaj can't control his temper, Jax's old friend, Laranth, doesn't want to hang out with him anymore, Darth Vader wants to have a talk with him, and his other friends might not be as loyal as he thinks. Jax, however, says that he doesn't know what his answer will be. It picks up shortly after Street of Shadows my review. Vader asks Dejah who has the bota, and she replies that she doesn't know, and then reveals that one of the Inquisitors is actually Jax in disguise. Reaves dashed my hopes on that score completely. Spoilers follow. Even the showdown with Darth Vader feels silly and almost bland. Jax is a Jedi, living undercover in Coruscant — despite the stupidity of such a move — his life should be more interesting than trying to decide if the local constable knows he's a Jedi or not. Another reviewer commented that Reaves should stay out of Jedi lore, and I'm inclined to agree. Also available from:. Coruscant Nights III: Patterns of Force Writer I would have preferred to see him die at the end, like how his father died at the end of Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter. Vader, however, is confident that he can figure it out without the holocron, and pours the contents of the vial into a receptacle on his chest plate. I commend him for attempting to put a new spin on the Jedi, but it didn't work and came off as being a bit silly. Just a moment while we sign you in to your Goodreads account. At the end of the book, though, decades of history especially Legends history! I was not very fond of Kajin Savaros. This reminds me a lot of the episodes of pretty much all the Star Treks — bad things happen, good things happen, reset. The focus for the trilogy seemed to be characterization of Reaves's characters, and it succeeded in that aspect. The original trilogy definitely ended on a high note, tho I get it. But Jax is also involved in another struggle -- to unlock the secrets of his father's death and his own past. This line of motivation is nonsensical for any being, but certainly makes no sense for someone as logical and cowardly as Rhinann. Please try again later. I can't wait for the last book. Search books and authors. Of course it helped that the main character was one of his own and not one of the franchise mainstays that you can't kill because, let's face it who would read a book where Han Solo got killed or believe it? So fast paced, so much happens in so little time! Like this: Like Loading After years of waiting in the shadows, Darth Sidious is taking the first step in his master plan to bring the Republic to its knees. To anybody familiar with Darth Maul there is no doubting the conclusion. Plus, I found it to be silly and unrealistic, even by Star Wars standards. It is an easy read and the pace never gets bogged down. Rhinann, meanwhile, has learned that Tesla has been narrowing his search for Jax to an uncomfortable proximity, and finally decides that he has overstayed his welcome, setting up transportation for the next day, regardless of whether he has obtained the bota plant extract or not. One of the people who figures out who he is literally just does a name search and is like, "Oh, look, a Jax Pavan is on the Imperial list of Jedi who are unaccounted for. LucasBooks will keep on hauling all new prequel information through the mud even though pre-TPM, no one had any right to this rampant, half-educated speculation. Reaves continues to be very sloppy with descriptions and details, both logistical and in- universe. I rather enjoyed the noir feel the books had, but it was lost without a strong plot to compliment it. Kajin feels the Force like water; sometimes, it feels like a steady stream to him. Nov 05, Chad Bearden rated it really liked it Shelves: star-wars-novels. Very Superstitious: Great Supernatural Mysteries. Unfortunately, he can barely contain it, bringing upon him an Inquisitor. Two people died and one was sent away! Some, he knew, hoped to understand it completely and ultimately; to settle once and for all the millennia-long debate over whether it had one face or two and where the potential for darkness lay—in the Force itself or in the wielder of the Force. As for the entire Coruscant Nights trilogy, I wasn't impressed. Jax, in his Inquisitor disguise, manages to get close enough to the ISB Central Office to sense that Laranth is being tortured, but he cannot sense Kajin. Lastly, I liked how this novel touched on so many important concepts, but namely this one: what distinguishes the good guys from the bad guys? Coruscant Nights III: Patterns of Force Reviews However, he did leave himself plenty of hooks for a future series. Jax tells I-5 that he can sense him, and that this means I-5 wouldn't be able to get close enough to Palpatine to assassinate him. It was basically a 'I own this book, I will read it and be done with it' case. And the Bota from previous book series is in demand by the Inquisitors. Inspired by Your Browsing History. Darth Vader plays a significant role. Seriously, the scene on the very front of the book never occurs in the story. I have other complaints that brought this down to two stars, but they involve some major spoilers for the ending so read on at your own risk: view spoiler [-There's little to no emotional consequence for the fact that Jax's party was cut in two.
