A computer is an electronic machine that takes instructions from us and gives the result after processing them. Classification of Computers A computer can be classified in two ways: 1. According to purpose 2. According to size According to Purpose 1. Analog Computer - It takes different input and gives the result after comparison. For example: Thermometer and Speedometer 2. Digital Computer - It works on the principle of binary mathematics. (Binary means 0 and 1) For example: Calculator and Digital Wrist Watch 3. Hybrid Computer – It is a combination of both analog and digital computers. The digital component does logical and numerical operations, while the analog component serves as a solver of mathematical complex equations. For example: ECG machine According to Size 1. Super Computer - It is the fastest, most powerful and very expensive computer. It is used in weather forecasting, nuclear power stations and animated movies. 2. Mainframe Computer - It is large and powerful computer. It can support hundreds of users. simultaneously. It is used for scientific research and mathematical operations. 3. Micro Computer (Personal Computer) - It is smallest in all types of computers. It has microprocessor as its brain. It supports only one user at a time. It is found in offices, homes and schools. Types of Micro Computers 1. Desktop Computer - Its system unit, input and output devices fit on a desk or a table in schools, homes and offices. 2. Laptop Computer - It is also called a notebook. It is small, light in weight and can be easily carried from one place to another. 3. Tablet PC - It is a portable computer with touch screen. Mobile Devices Definition - it is a small, portable and can be carried in a bag or a pocket. It can also be connected to a PC for exchanging information. Examples are: 1. Smartphone - It allows to make phone calls, send and receive text messages and access the Internet. It also allows to capture images and share it with others. 2. E-book Reader (electronic book reader) - It is a small, portable device designed for reading books. It is electronic version of a printed book. 3. Smartwatch - It is worn on the wrist. It has a touch screen. It can show time and can keep track of our physical activities. It can also show notifications for calls, messages, and e-mails. 4. Digital Camera - It allows the user to take pictures and store them as digital images. These pictures can be copied in a computer and displayed on the screen. 5. Game Console - It is designed to play video games by one or more people. It uses: (i) a handheld controller - as its input device (ii) a television screen - as its output device (iii) hard disk or memory card - for storage (iv) Models of Game Console - Sony Play Station 4, Nintendo Wii, Microsoft Xbox 360 Server Definition - It provides data and information to computers attached to each other through a network. It controls access to the hardware (physical parts of a computer), software (programs or set of instructions) and other resources of the network.
