Report by John Knight Blessed by a gorgeous autumn day, and the promise of an interesting program, a large gathering arrived at Anne and Michael’s Durras property. The warm and dry conditions of recent weeks continue, and the expected display of Sunshine Wattle, Acacia terminalis did not eventuate, but the bushland around North Durras did present us with quite a diversity of plants to keep everyone interested. During a relaxed morning tea, enjoyed on the deck in the sunshine, the meeting kicked off with a ‘show and tell’ session. Phil and Catriona were once again to the fore, with a range of Banksias and Hakeas. A highlight was Hakea bakeriana, a medium sized shrub which is found in the heaths of the central coast. Foliage is a bright fresh green, and although it looks prickly, is quite benign. Brilliant pink to red flowers are borne on older wood, but still well presented. Catriona put in a plug for the Isopogon and Petrophile Study Group, which she and Phil lead. And with flowers as shown on her Isopogon cuneatus specimen, it is little wonder members get enthusiastic about these plants. Then comes the revelation that for success, they are best grafted onto hardy eastern states rootstock. Phil continues to experiment with this process, and is having good success using a hybrid of Isopogon mnoraifolius from the northern tablelands. Banksia vincentia, the most recently named Banksia, occurs in a swampy area near industrial development at Vincentia on the NSW South Coast. There are just a few plants remaining in the wild, and the population is seriously threatened by development and changed drainage patterns. -

The 392 hectare park was proclaimed in 1979 to conserve a remnant block of native vegetation, in particular the northern-most population of Brown Stringybark (Eucalyptus baxteri). Kaiserstuhl Conservation Park preserves a substantial number of habitats for native fauna and helps to protect the soil and watershed of Tanunda Creek. More than 360 species of native plant are found within the reserve, many of which are of conservation significance. Bird species of conservation significance recorded within the reserve include the Diamond Firetail, White-browed Treecreeper, Elegant Parrot and Crescent Honeyeater. Kaiserstuhl Conservation Park also has a rich cultural heritage. The reserve is of significance to the Peramangk people and Ngadjuri people who have traditional associations with the land. Kaiserstuhl Conservation Park has also been a valuable source of material for botanical research. Dr Ferdinand von Mueller and Dr Hans Herman Behr collected Barossa Ranges plants from the area between 1844 and 1851. -

Abstract: Mediterranean southwestern Australia experienced two successive days of extreme (> 45 °C) maximum temperatures and hot winds during the summer of 1991, resulting in adult mortality and extensive crown damage in a sclerophyllous mallee-heathland. To investigate the relationship between leaf attributes, plant environment, and heat tolerance in sclerophylls, measurements of plant height, leaf clustering, leaf morphology (thickness, dry density, area, perimeter/area ratio), percentage crown damage, and percentage mortality, and categories of exposure to wind, shade, and bare soils were recorded for 40 heat-damaged and 14 undamaged co-occurring species. Analyzing the entire dataset by principal components analysis showed that undamaged species had thicker leaves (on average 61% thicker) than species with damaged leaves and were more exposed to wind, sun, and bare soil. Thicker leaves are a common response to hot, dry, and more exposed environments and are more heat tolerant than thinner leaves. A separate analysis of the Proteaceae (25 damaged and six undamaged species) showed a similar trend to the overall dataset. -

The Action Plan was developed in 2018 in consultation with experts, stakeholders and the public. The intent of the draft Action Plan is to provide a guiding framework for a specifically environmental dimension to Australia’s response to Myrtle Rust – that is, the conservation of native biodiversity at risk.
