CLUB HAPPENNINGS A lot has been happening within the club in the last couple of months. Highlights have been Old Car Day on 1st September at Bethany where over 240 vehicles attended (including some street rods for the first time), representing over 35 clubs, and the famous Gawler Swap Meet , with record numbers of sellers and a good buyer attendance. Our annual club auction at the September meeting raised about $700 towards club funds. We have also had the Annual Dinner at the Barossa Chateau, thoroughly enjoyed by all in attendance. President Mike presented the Hard Luck trophy to Gavin Launer in recognition of not only problems with the , but also problems with his ticker. This is the first time that I believe that hard luck with other than mechanical devices has been recognised. Mike also presented the President’s trophy to Alvin Jenkin which has resulted in your editor having head (as in swollen) trouble. We have seen the resignation of club registrars Allan Kempster and John Drage . Allan has given many years of service and wise counsel in this area, and he will be sorely missed in this role, but a rest will be good for him and Cynthia (who has the major responsibility of keeping him under control). John has also provided sterling service over a much shorter period, and I am sure that he would have continued to do so had he been able. Heaps of thanks to both of you and we wish you all the best in the future. Allan and John have been replaced by Martin Stephens and Brett Unsworth who have been recognised by the Department of Planning Transport and Infrastructure as authorised Registrars for the club. Their contact details will be found on page 2 of this Journal for any queries you may have in relation to concessional registration and the Code of Practice. We have also seen the resignation of Colin Curtis as Federation Representative. Again thank you Colin for carrying out the difficult job of communicating to and from Federation meetings. A big thank you to Gerry Petrus for volunteering to take on this role. A new position of Publicity Officer has been created, and the committee has appointed Trevor Bellchambers to take on this role. Membership Secretary Ron Stephens has done a great job of cleansing the membership database and has worked with E-Torque facilitator to sort out all the email addresses. All members who did not renew this year have now been removed, all residential address records have been recorded, and no rejections are occurring on E-Torque mail outs. We reckon that the records were 100% correct on 15 th September, which means that there was probably a 1% error on 16 th September. With 291 memberships and 475 members, things don’t stand still for long! Ron does a great job of keeping the records up to date. The Registrars have now advised DPTI of persons holding log books from the GVVCVC who are no longer financial, and it is expected that DPTI will contact those persons in due course. The club car trailer has had a total refurbishment and upgrade due to the efforts of Allan Kempster, Peter Bailey, Gavin Launer, and Doug Pellisier , and is almost unrecognisable as the one originally purchased. Contact Peter Bailey to hire it but please note that its maximum payload is 1500 Kg which excludes loading most 4 wheel drives and probably many 50’s and 60’s American cars. It certainly excludes the editor’s P5 which is 1600 Kg dry. Your legal towing capacity may be further limited by your tow vehicle and towbar rating, check this in the vehicle handbook before using it. Allow 500Kg for the trailer weight before adding the load to determine where you are in relation to vehicle towing limits. Hire is to club members only at $20 per day. By the time you will have read this, the Bay to Birdwood Classic will have been completed, including the GVVCVC event on Wednesday 25 th September which had over 70 participants booked in. Thanks to Trevor Unsworth and Barry Bywater for organising this event. Coming up we have the Snowtown 135 th Anniversary run on Saturday 12 th October and an evening run to Karl Lindners Collection on 22 nd October, a couple of slightly different runs to the norm and yet further opportunities to run your vehicles and meet with fellow club members. Then in November we have the traditional “bring your vehicle” BBQ meeting on 19 th with a guest speaker from the Sydney to London Marathon committee to tell us all about it and give opportunities to be involved. The marathon commences in April 2014. See your opportunity on Arfa’s page to purchase a Hillman Hunter and replicate the 1968 win by this make!

GVVCVC Journal October 2013. Page 3 30 YEARS of the GAWLER VETERAN VINTAGE AND CLASSIC VEHICLE CLUB It seems like only last year the club celebrated 25 years of existence. The first official meeting was in March 1984, and the first run was to Rosedale. So our 30 th Anniversary will be in March 2014. A committee has been established to determine a suitable way of celebrating this milestone. November Bring Your Car BBQ Meeting Our meeting on Tuesday November 19 th is the traditional Bring Your Vehicle and BBQ night commencing at 5.30pm. The BBQ will incur a cost of $2 per person. Vehicles will be judged and prizes issued on the night. More details at the October Meeting. We have guest speaker from the Sydney to London Marathon rally (see page 7) Membership Report for August and September 2013. We had five new Members join us in this period. Simon and Kim Michelmore with their 1972 Holden Belmont Utility. Stephen (Steve) Salisbury and his 1967 Morris Mini . Robert (Bob) Francis and his 1970 Ford Fairmont XW Sedan Michael Jacob and his 1972 Honda KB750K2 Motorcycle. Our Membership Total is now 476 consisting of Joint 184=368, Single 108. Also 1 Pending Joint and 7 Pending Singles. A Big Gawler Veteran Vintage & Classic Vehicle Club welcome to these new Members…. Ron Stephens Membership Secretary Editors Comment: Interesting and unusual to have two prospective members at our September meeting both owning 1950 MG TDs! Bit of a change from all the MGBs coming into the club recently. Almost 40 members did not renew their membership for the 2013/2014 year. There are a number of reasons for this to occur including relocation, no longer having a vehicle, or age catching up with people. Sadly, some of those who have not renewed have had a long and significant association with the club. David Norman was the recipient of the President’s Trophy in 2000/2001 and 2004/2005 and was Secretary for a number years. Rod Zerk was a foundation member and past President, and John and Vanessa Eason, Robert Freeman, Elsie McInerney, Joy Miels have been long term members. The contributions of these people to the club has been greatly appreciated.

President’s Trophy Awards The President’s trophy is presented each year to the member whom the President of the club believes has made a significant contribution to the activities and objectives of the Gawler Veteran Vintage and Classic Vehicle Club The following is a list of recipients of the GVVCVC President’s Trophy since its initialisation in 1988 1987/88 Bob Carr 1988/89 Vin Barry 1989/90 Don Ormsby 1990/91 Max Harris 1991/92 Allan Kempster 1992/1993 Max Harris 1993/94 Trevor Bellchambers 1994/95 Peter Bailey 1995/96 Don Ormsby 1996/97 Corrie Wake 1997/98 John Riley 1998/99 Andy Jackson 1999/00 Pud Freeman 2000/01 David Norman 2001/02 Lorraine Bywater 2002/03 Trevor Unsworth 2003/04 Bob Perry 2004/05 David Norman 2005/06 Allan Kempster 2006/07 Trevor Unsworth 2007/08 Alvin Jenkin 2008/09 Lyn Mitchell 2010/11 Peter Bailey 2011/12 Fred Chapman 2012/13 Alvin Jenkin

Sydney -London Classic Marathon Rally 12 April - 11 May 2014 This rally will possibly be via Gawler, and the club has been requested to provide support for the first part of stage 2 which commences at Renmark. We have a guest speaker from the organising committee at our November meeting. Over 75 people have registered their interest in participating with a large variety of vehicles. At this stage there are no Hillman Hunters registered! Listings include an Austin 1800, Lotus Cotinas, several Escorts, several Mercedes and Porsches, Datsun Zs of various sizes, a Renault 12, Mustangs, Peugeot 404, Volvo, Skoda, Falcon XY GT, a Monaro, Perana and DeNoble (whatever they are??), Lancias and Alfas. All cars must have been manufactured before 31 Dec 1981 (Apparently the Perana was a Ford Capri modified in South Africa with a 302 Windsor V8 and built in about 1970. Art Clarke asked the question re the DeNoble on a web forum and got this response: “Me thinks a Denoble 430ST is a one off prototype that Laurence Noble built from something made pre Dec'75, like a '69 Buick Wildcat or '65 Lincoln Continental, with a dirty great big 7L 430 cubic inch V8 in it. ”) This is the provisional route map. GVVCVC Journal October 2013. Page 8 Run Reports Run organisers are requested to nominate someone on the run to provide an article for the Journal, and also someone to report on the run to meetings (preferably a separate person for each). A report sheet is available to assist in reporting and is on the web site at http://gawlercarclub.com/pdfs/run_report_template.pdf . Reports should include some statistics on number of cars and people on the run plus information of a general nature. Photos of the run are earnestly sought by the Editor and the Webmaster. Barossa Run Wednesday17 th July Bruce Williams (photos for this event appeared in the August Edition) Approximately 40 members including children met at Gawler and enjoyed a scenic run through Bethany to The Woodcarvers Haven located between Angaston and Eden Valley. The weather up there was cold and windy so we were all glad to be able to move inside where a large display of carved rocking horses beautiful tables tools etc were exhibited. The owner gave an interesting talk on how the system was worked to produce these items. Lorraine Bywater attends classes there on a weekly basis and has carved a large rocking horse which sits proudly in their home lounge-- What a woman. Devonshire tea was enjoyed by all there. We then drove to the Tanunda Club and enjoyed a good lunch. The backdrop in that Club is a marvel and changes with the seasons. From the Club we drove to Steinys Metwurst factory on the outskirts of Tanunda where one of the staff gave us an explanation of the process used and explained the difference between Salami and Metwurst. Generous samples were provided but the adults had difficulty getting near these as the school holiday mob were ravenous at that time Mike Mary & Molly Osbourne all the way from Ardrossan had a wheel bearing problem and also had a blowout within sight of their hometown on the way back home But they got home safely.. This run was enjoyed by all and was another good run by the Bywater Mob Hamley Bridge Run Sunday July 28 th by Lois Lane The run started out as a mystery run until a destination was decided upon. We needed a longer run to blow the cobwebs out of the car. Everyone left Tafe on a warm sunny winter’s day at l0am on Sunday 28th July. I drove my Purple People Eater with my personal driving instructor in attendance. We were surrounded by fields of green all the way. Morning tea stop was at Balaklava. Most of the town folk were at church, so we had the town pretty much to ourselves. The trip went smoothly and without any mishaps to Hamley Bridge. But there were no speciality shops open anywhere, so our purses got a rest. After a delicious lunch and chat we headed for home leaving all the kitchen duties to others. It really was a ‘lazy Sunday afternoon’ remember that song by the Small Faces 1968? (So long ago). Lois Lane

Morning tea at Balak David Moule and Fairlane The Harvey boys (Anne Williams reported that: Approximately 35 members departed Gawler heading for Mallala. Corrie had organised the weather well and it was great for mid winter. After passing through the town we then drove on to Balaklava where we all stopped for a morning tea break. Some had a walk around the main streets and took in the feeling of the town. Most had taken their own morning tea which was good as only one shop was

GVVCVC Journal October 2013. Page 9 open. After a good chat we all moved off via Owen then to Hamley Bridge where we had coffee, juice, soup and great main roasts in the Institute building. Some of us needed to go for a walk up the main street to walk off our lunch Thanks to Corrie for organising a good run on such a nice day and I am sure that this was enjoyed by all.)

Police Museum Run 25 August 2013 Bruce and Anne Williams 40 Club members attended including our loyal members Mike Mary and Molly Osborne all the way from Ardrossan. The Police Museum is located adjacent to the Old Adelaide Jail and is run mostly by voluntary retired police officers. A very interesting presentation was given about the history of the S.A. Police force, this being the first established in Australia. A great Morning Devonshire tea followed . A large range of police equipment being displayed through 4 fully equipped rooms including a re-enactment of a murder scene with a dead woman and various clues as to how the murder was carried out. Another room had many badges including badges from the over 28000 various police forces in the U.S.A. We then moved into the Horse Stables and were given a breakdown of their workings. We were also introduced to a Female Officer and her Horse. Further along we walked through a Garage where old police transport was displayed. Old Motor Bikes Cars and a Black Maria all in good condition. Most of the group then drove down to Port Adelaide and on to the Birkenhead Tavern which is located in a top setting on the Harbour where we enjoyed a sumptuous luncheon. It was a really good day out and another fun run by Barry and Lorraine Bywater

Old Car Day, Sunday 1 ST September 2013 The weather was perfect for the Fathers day run to Bethany. Those who turned up early were fortunate to observe the parade up Bethany Road of the Northern Territory Variety Bash Vehicles. There were over 240 vehicles present with an extremely high turn out for the run starting at Fremont Park in Elizabeth. For the first time we had a street rod on a run and another 4 turned up late in the day. Over 35 clubs were represented, and several on their first outing to Old Car Day said they will be back next year (despite it falling on Monday in 2014). It was great to see cars loaded with kids and grand kids. Oldest vehicle was a 1922 T model Ford from the Barossa club, and there were several unique and rare vehicles present. The one that caught the editor’s eye was the 1971 Citroen SM, one of only 8 in Australia. There were several tear drop caravans out on the day which added to the picnic atmosphere.

GVVCVC Journal October 2013. Page 10 Probably the best story of the day was from the 2 BSA motorcycles that parked near the house down the back. They were ridden by father and son, and they wanted to know what was going on. They had decided to have a nice quiet picnic with the family (in the accompanying 4WD) at Bethany to celebrate Fathers Day, and copped this crowd. A big thank you to those who helped out on the day, particularly Bruce Williams and his band of parking marshalls, and Lesley Russell for keeping the kettle going.

Old Car Day Elizabeth via Virginia to Bethany , (co-ordinators ) Martin Stephens / June Kent by Dabtoe 0930 Weather sunny and perfect for a day out in the old cars. We got off to a slow start, as the organizers did not have the run and attendance signing-on sheets, but not to worry it gave us more time to socialize and get to meet the car owners from other attending clubs who were joining us for the run (Austin 7 club, Early Holden club, Chrysler club and the MG car club). The large turnout was unexpected, 72 vehicles were accounted for and possibly a few others which were not on the attendance sheet (by the time the appropriate forms arrived, delivered in the white Jaguar there was quite a line up) but we still managed to be on our way by 0945. It was a leisurely drive out to Virginia for morning tea or breakfast as desired, some participants set up their chairs in the car park and brewed up while some fortunate Fathers were taken around the nursery and treated to a father’s day present - even though they probably paid for it themselves. By 1100 we were all on our way again via Angle Vale where we met up with the proud owner (three weeks only) of a bright orange ’34 Chevrolet hot rod, who had contacted us but was concerned re early morning commitments (“No worries mate, we’ll pick you up as we come through”). Then on to the Northern Expressway, this allowed some of the participants to put their foot down and blow the cobwebs away or as one driver remarked getting ready for the Bay to Birdwood Classic on the Freeway. By 1205 the last of the rear guard back-up group, Martin & Glenys, and Dave & June arrived at Bethany. It must be noted that June was relieved to get there in the same car she started in, Norm was not required this year but he was there in spirit. As far as we could see everyone parked up as directed by the vigilant marshals and then proceeded to enjoy the rest of the afternoon having a picnic tea and generally socializing. Needless to say many enjoyed the opportunity to view the vehicles of the other attendee’s. ELIZABETH VEHICLES:- Austin 14, Chevrolet 1, Chrysler 14, Dodge 3, Ford 3, Holden 8, Hudson 1, Jaguar 1, Jenson 1, Jowett 1, Mercedes 2, Morris 2, M.G. 13, Oldsmobile 1, Peugeot 1, Rambler 1, Rolls Royce 1, Sunbeam 2, Toyota 1, Triumph 2. Admittedly there was a minor hiccup with a shortage of run direction sheets and commemorative windshield stickers. Unwarranted comments are not necessary, particularly from OUR fellow club members. This run commencement point is subject to only a vague idea of how many will actually attend as people coming from Adelaide join here for convenience. On this occasion the organizers decided it was appropriate to give what they had to our visitors; those that were listening were advised of this fact and that more would be printed for those who wanted them - just keep in mind that they do this because they like to and at their own expense.

Unfortunately some of the visitors missed out on going to the morning tea at the Virginia nursery because unfortunately they followed some of our members who had elected to travel their own route! If you do not wish to participate wholly in the designated route, or to socialize with others, there is no need to come to the starting point. It is your choice to make your own way to Bethany if you so desire, and then sign an attendance sheet on your arrival, thus making it easier for the drivers of the backup vehicles to ensure nobody gets left on the roadside enroute. (This last point was drawn to the co-ordinator’s attention by a much

GVVCVC Journal October 2013. Page 11 appreciated phone call from a member of the Austin 7 Club, apologising for some of their cars missing the Virginia stop.)

Martins Great day out, but what about later? Old Car Day was great, the weather was great, the car ran great, the company was great, BUT on returning home . . . “WELL” The reliable "old" car was tucked away behind the roller door and the owners went inside for a nanna nap. About an hour later it was decided to reorganise the cars, moving the commuter Audi out the front as they were going out to dinner. Fortunately this wasn't left until the last minute as the drive mechanism on the roller door decided it was time to self destruct. The door would only go up about a foot before the mechanism began either making horrible graunching noises or simply jamming solid! Perhaps they could use their 4WD parked out the front, BUT this was misfiring slightly???? Continue with the door was the decision - and after several fruitless attempts one of the guide tracks was removed so the door could be dragged into a raised position by struggling with an over-the-top grip on the drum. The vehicles (behind the roller door) were duly swapped around with the you beaut Audi ready to go, out the front. Needless to say that bloody Murphy was still around and getting the door back down again proved to be more difficult than getting it up, but half hour later it was achieved and the house owner was now somewhat sweaty and decidedly dirtier. Some would say no big issue, drama over, BUT the Audi had other plans. Running to a very tight schedule for dinner now (after cleaning up and getting changed) it was time to pick up one of the other dinner guests who, of course, wasn't ready. However this was not an immediate concern as the Audi indicators, power windows, and sun roof (open) had decided to stop working. A quick check of fuses did not shed any light on the cause, but by this time it was discovered that neither did the lights; they had joined the other non- functioning components. Not game to shut the engine off, in case that wanted a rest too, it was decided to return for the misfiring 4WD . (And not a Lucas Component anywhere! Editor) The open top Audi was deposited on the driveway and journey was completed without any further problems BUT it did mean dinner was half hour later than intended. On returning home a thumb through the Audi's owner manual suggested that an auto cut out feature had been overly diligent with the car starting impeccably and everything working again!!! PS A new panel lift door will be replacing the roller door shortly by a professional company,as he was not game to stand on the yellow wheelie bin again and break his other ankle! Annual Dinner August 24 th This was a great night at Chateau Barossa with 79 people in attendance to celebrate another year of activity of the club and make presentations to active members. As mentioned elsewhere Gavin Launer was handed the “Hard Luck” trophy and Alvin Jenkin the President’s trophy. Entertainment by John Kampes was first class and most appropriate for the night. John is a former Formula V competitor. 10 people booked who did not attend, of these only 2 sent an apology due to ill health. The club is considerably out of pocket as a result and Payment is sought. Gawler Swap Meet Sunday 15 th September The weather was a bit inclement on this, the biggest of Swap Meets in SA and this probably kept some buyers away, but it did not impact on sellers with a record number approaching 400 sites. In excess of 3,000 buyers enjoyed the opportunity. Both sellers and buyers were well controlled thanks to the efforts of club members who put in a great day. The Holden/Ford/Chrysler stocks predominated but there were a few of the older items for those prepared to search. There was a good variety of vehicles in the display area. Great to see Bob Perry returning to his best on the PA system. Did you get that fortune that you were seeking Bob?

GVVCVC Journal October 2013. Page 14 BOYS AND THEIR TOYS Pictured here with his ‘toys’ is GVVCVC member Colin Wilksch . Colin has always been interested in old cars and bought his first car 27 years ago — a 1949 Morris Minor Low-Lite which he purchased from the Kernich family in Nuriootpa and he has completely restored it. He purchased his second old car 14 years ago, again a Morris Minor 1000, 1959 model. This was in very good condition, only driven by an elderly lady and, after a little ‘tidying up’, this car is in pristine condition. Colin recently bought a customized 1972 VW — a real looker. “I’ve got 3 sons” Colin said, “so I’ve got to leave one car for each”. Colin was raised in Williamstown and became interested in cars when his father bought the first family car in 1958— a rather very late entry into the motoring world. Colin worked nearly all his life with the E & WS Department (now SA Water), starting in 1954 with the construction of the South Para Reservoir and later, the Warren Reservoir to Paskeville mains line. He spent 2 years at Elizabeth and then was transferred to Maitland as second-in-charge at that Depot. During their time there, from 1964- 1975, Colin and his wife Marj’s 3 sons were born, in between Marj’s busy time of being a teacher. In 1975 they were transferred to Riverton Depot when Colin was supervisor for 23 years, until he retired in 1998.Colin spent 44 years with SA Water and retired to Gawler in 2004.Colin plays indoor bowls for the Lutheran Club and is an active member of the Gawler Vintage Veteran and Classic Car Club. Another boy with his toy is Gavin Launer . After leaving Clare High School in 1965 he started work for Farmers Union, the Stock Agent Company. Through hard work (grape picking, pruning on weekends), scrimping and saving, he purchased his very first car — a 1967 Morris Mini Deluxe — it had wind-up windows and a heater! Soon after he was transferred to Kangaroo Island for an 18-month stint then on to Lameroo for another 6 months. The Mini accompanied him to Tumby Bay where he stayed from 1970-1974.During this time he married and had their first son. Late 1974 Gavin was transferred to Cowell as Branch Manager where their second son was born. With a family and a company car, the faithful Mini was sold — a sad day! It was still in pristine condition. In 1979 Gavin was again transferred as Manager of the Eudunda branch. He resigned in1981 to take up the position of Station Manager of the Katherine Lehman School in Wau, Papua New Guinea. This was a daunting yet exciting experience with many life lessons learnt .Gavin and his family returned to Australia and settled in Gawler in 1985. After approximately 12 years in Real Estate and 14 years as Manager of Gawler Aged Homes, Gavin retired in 2010 and was looking for a project — it happened to be a 1967 Mini Deluxe in rather poor condition. Approximately 2 years later, after a complete restoration, his toy had its first run — complete with the original number plate from his first Mini (thanks to the Registration Department).Having learnt from this project, Gavin is now restoring a 1953 Morris Minor ute and with 2 sons, like Colin, it’s one for each. He also has a 1953 Velocette 350 motorcycle which is already claimed by his grandson (aged 7).Gavin is also a member and Secretary of the Gawler Vintage Veteran and Classic Car Club and plays indoor bowls for the Lutheran Club.

Chang Jiang motorcycle outfit Chang Jiang Motorcycles were built exclusively for the Peoples Liberation Army from the 1950’s to the 1980’s. All were fitted with sidecars and equipped with machine guns, ammunition boxes etc. Apparently they were built using tooling purchased from BMW in 1938, hence the horizontally opposed twin cylinder motor. This example was imported from China in 2011 and resides in Warwick Qld. It is a 1956 model with a 750cc motor and has 4 forward speeds and reverse.

3. 750 The Roewe 750 has been manufactured since 2006 in Nanjing, China. It looks like the last model out of UK and uses a 2.5 litre V6 engine based on the Rover KV6 engine. The body is stretched by 103mm over the last Rover Model. It was launched in Chile and Peru in 2008 as the MG 750. Ford has purchased the rights to the “Rover” name, so the Chinese had to find a different name. Interestingly, The Corporation owns the right to the MG brand and continued to manufacture the MG TF in the UK until 2010!
