Palace celebrated 24 fabulous years on Ocean Drive! This one-of-a-kind anniversary party featured beats by DJ Cindel, and, of course, there isn’t a party at Palace without outrageous performances by all of your favorite queens! EDISON FARROW BRINGS US SMASH SUNDAYS @ CHALK BY JAMES CUBBY

One of Miami’s hottest event promoters, Edison Farrow, known as the godfather of South Beach gay nightlife and for events such as Martini Tuesdays, the Simple Life at Buck 15, and HYPE Fridays, brings us his newest night called Smash Sundays at the newly opened Chalk, a ping pong and billiards lounge. For the Grand Opening of Smash Sundays Edison has double billed the night as a Grammy Viewing Party and a B52s After Party. Wire caught up with Edison to learn more about Smash Sundays.

What can we expect from your new weekly party, Smash Sundays at Chalk? Smash Sundays will be like no other event currently happening in Miami. Chalk is a beautiful, chic Ping Pong and Billiards Lounge. So, people will be playing games, drinking, socializing and possibly dancing between the tables! We will have a week- ly Happy Hour 9 to 10 p.m. with $4 Rokk Vodka drinks.

Will there be themes every week? Yes, we are launching with a Grammys viewing party for the Grand Opening. The Grammys start at 8 p.m. So, there will be complimentary Rokk Vodka from 8 to 9 p.m. Our third week will be Oscar’s night.

Will DJ Deejay Smeejay be spinning every week? Yes! Smeejay will be there every Sunday. He will be spinning fun, campy music. He has a great appreciation for music and always pulls out some unexpected fun music.

Will pool and ping pong be part of your party? If so, any tournaments planned? Yes, Chalk is a Ping Pong and Billiards Lounge. So, Ping Pong and Pool are a big part of the night. I would love to have tournaments a little down the road.

Tell us why you chose Chalk as the new location for your weekly party. I love this venue. They did an outstanding job with the space. I had a Martini Tues- days at Chalk and everyone loved the night and the venue.

What are the special ingredients that Edison Farrow mixes together to make a good party? A special venue is always very important, along with great music and fun people. I always try to invent a party that has never been done before in Miami.

What’s the typical crowd at an Edison Farrow party? I have been promoting events for over 11 years. So, I have a huge and varied email list. I get all types of people at my events, but each event winds up finding its own audience. I am also currently hosting Martini Tuesdays and HYPE Fridays at MOVA. Mark your calendars: Carnival is a-comin’. Falling in mid-February, it is technically a holiday-before-a-holy-day, being the herald of Lent, a six-week party-pooping period of fasting and penitence that remembers Christ’s 40 days in the wilderness. Which meant that if you were going to have any fun all at all, best to get it all out on the day before. Presto! Carnival was born. Meaning “to remove meat” in acknowledgement of the bland Lenten diet, Carnival, has since become one of the largest world-parties on the planet, with celebrations held on every continent. Steele’s five top party towns for all you party-boys are:

1) , Brazil The no brainer. An all out bonanza of Latin flesh samba-ing at 180 mph, in 2011, Rio saw its population jump by a solid one million (a 33% increase over 2010) as people from all Brazil and the world came for this most popular of Carnivals. If you haven’t booked your hotel yet, be prepared to pay through the nose - this is South America’s top tourist draw, and is booked months in advance. It doesn’t hurt that Rio is also one of Latin America’s gay-friendliest cities.

2) New Orleans, USA Mardi Gras, Carnival - it’s all the same holiday, and New Orleans revolves around this one day, with krewes duking it out for top honors. Beads, boys, bongs - what more could you ask for? The lower French Quarter is the gay corner of the party. Today, there are eight Gay krewes in New Orleans: Amon Ra, Armeinius, Mwindo, Lords of Leather, People of Substance, Petronius, Queenateenas and Satyricon. A Gay Note: The Night of the Black Mask is held the Friday before Mardi Gras and is the South’s oldest leather block party.

3) Goa, India Okay, we admit it’s not the first country you would think of for what is usually consid- ered a Latin holiday, but the state of Goa, on India’s western coast, existed for over 400 years as a Portuguese colony. Head to the capital of Panaji, where the festival called Intruz rocks on for three solid days as the legendary King Momo rules over the fun. Celebrations, from traditional drumming and local nighttime dancing to full-on parades are held all over the city, but for the best of the best, nothing beats the Red and Black Ball.

4) Barranquilla, Colombia Carnival shuts this town down. Officially an UNESCO Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, if you’re not a party-monster, boy are you in the wrong place. Colombia’s biggest party fuses the energies of Europe and Africa into a bacchanalia of street dances and musical and masquerade parades. Beginning on the Saturday before Shrove Tuesday with the Battle of the Flowers, the Great Parade on Sunday and Monday is marked by a Caribo-Latin orchestral festival, while things go critical-mass during the Fat Tuesday blow-out, when the legendary king of the party, Joselito Carvajal, is buried (until next year).

Who are some new artists or bands that you love?

Kate: I’ve actually been listening to Lana Del Rey. I really like her new album. Her voice is very beautiful and her lyrics are really great too. I’ve also been having a little festival of my own with Joe Strummer and the Mescale- ros, Big Audio Dynamite and The Cure. And I love !

When you lost one of your band mates, Ricky, from AIDS/HIV-related complications how did that influence or change the band’s direction?

Keith: Ricky was so distinctive in his style. He was such an original. We didn’t think that we would continue with- out him. We didn’t think that we could continue without him. He and I used to write the music together. So I didn’t see how it was possible for us to continue. So I moved to Woodstock and continued writing for the next two years. Then one day I played some of my stuff for the girls and we thought maybe we could continue. But with that deci- sion I made the decision to switch to guitar. Which was interesting because I’d never really played guitar before. I didn’t really think about it. I just felt it was something I should do. So it really changed things. To me it’s like two completely different bands. There was the band with Ricky and then there’s the band after Ricky.

What do you have planned for us on February 12 in Miami?

Keith: We’re adding some new songs to the set. So they’ll be new to us as well. That always adds a little extra energy to the show when you’re doing something you’ve never done before. It keeps you on your toes. I should say “new old songs” because they’re songs we haven’t performed in a long time and we have to re- learn them. Sometimes we even change the arrangement around to suit our mood. I mean sometime when you go back to a song you wanna do it a little differently. But we don’t stray too far from the original. Our shows are always high energy. So get ready to get your go-go on!

A LATIN BRUNCH AT SEA ABOARD THE BISCAYNE LADY This year’s Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival, scheduled from February 23-26, has an im- pressive itinerary of events including the Brunch at Sea hosted by Chef Douglas Rodriguez, known as The God- father of Nuevo Latino Cuisine, and award-winning Chef Aarón Sanchez, known for his authentic Latin cuisine. Don’t expect a typical brunch as Brunch at Sea will be on the Festival’s Party Boat, The Biscayne Lady and will be a Latin affair. The brunch will combine the vibrant Cuban cuisine of Chef Douglas Rodriguez with the Mexican- inspired style of Food Network star Aarón Sanchez for a swinging salsa affair mixed with brunch-style foods, Diplomatico Rum and Montecristo Cigars.

Brunch at Sea is now celebrating its second year, and some 350 guests will enjoy this energetic brunch affair as The Biscayne Lady cruises around Star Island, Palm Island, and Hibiscus Island for about 90 minutes before returning to shore at Bay- side Marketplace. Hosts Chef Rodriguez and Chef Sanchez will have the premier station at the front of the ship, serving Latin inspired brunch dishes. Chef Rodriguez, a pioneer in the culinary world, has an impressive track record that includes several award-winning restaurants, best selling cookbooks and numerous television appear- ances. Chef Rodriguez’s current sensation, De Rodriguez Cuba on Ocean, offers a new twist on classic dishes with an authentic experience. Chef Sanchez, co-star of Food Network’s hit series, Chopped and Heat Seekers, is the culinary visionary Expl_Expo_wire_qtr_ad_CMYK_Expl_Expo_wire_qtr_ad 1/24/12 6:51 PM Page 1 behind Tacombi Tacqueria in and Crossroads at House of Blues na- tionwide as well as being the owner and executive chef of Centrico, located in New York City, and Mestizo, located in Kansas City. Chef Sanchez is one of the country’s leading contemporary Latin Chefs.

Joining Chefs Rodriguez and Sanchez will be Guest Chefs Timon Balloo and Pichet Ong, who will have stations on the ship with Pichet located on the upper level serv- ing up desserts. As Executive Chef of Sugarcane raw bar grill in mid-town Miami, Balloo brings his experience to the table earning him a collection of favorable re- views including three stars by The Miami Herald. Chef Pichet Ong is known for “mix- ing classical and modern flavors to create “whimsical sweet and savory foods at his iconic restaurants (P*ONG, Village Tart), dessert bar (The Spot, Bubble Lounge) and bakery (Batch).”

The Festival’s Party Boat will not only be filled with great food but also live music from a salsa band located on the top deck and a group of professional salsa danc- ers. For cigar aficionados, there will be a cigar station offering up smokes from Montecristo. Diplomatico Rum will be just one of the specialties served at one of the four bars on the ship. Dress for the Sunday cruise is casual cruise-type wear and it’s recommended that women not wear high heels, as the steps on the ship are steep.

Brunch at Sea sets sail Sunday, February 26 at 11 a.m. at Bayside Marketplace (401 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami) and returns to dock at 1:30 p.m. Tickets are still available for this exciting culinary adventure. Visit www.sobefest.com.
