“I loved working with Tina on the purchase of my first home because she really listened to what I was looking for and helped guide my decisions with her expertise. When I was ready to sell that home she recommended ways to get the space ready, and the selling price was more than I could have imagined. When my husband and I ‘accidentally’ found our forever home, we did not hesitate to call her. She once again gave us the advice and guidance that secured the purchase of the home over 3 other buyers and helped us sell my husband’s home quickly and again for more than asking. Tina not only made these stressful transactions manageable by keeping in close contact with us – we always knew what was happening, but more importantly, she was always enthusiastic and super positive. Tina goes above and beyond and is an absolute pleasure to work with.” The Barrette Family #1 Sales Agent 14 Years in a Row! 2006 - 2019 #1 LISTING AGENT FOR 13 YEARS 2000 + HOMES LISTED For over 115 years, people have relied on Andersen. Experience the difference.

HAVE BEEN TO PARIS THREE TIMES – when I was 18, in my early 30s, and again eight years ago, for my stepson’s wedding. But each visit was brief. Paris was as magical as everyone said, but it was always a place I passed through on my way to somewhere else. So last winter, in need of diversion, renewal and enlightenment, I conjured up another visit to the City of Light – only this time I wanted my trip to begin and end in Paris. I imagined walks that would take hours and storied cafés where I would while away an afternoon watching elegant and aloof Parisians go about their day. I started reading books, making notes and building up my tolerance for red wine. I went in search of my melancholy, existential self and felt Paris was the place I would find it. And yet, as the year wore on and Paris got closer, the trip and my life began to morph into something else altogether. First, my big brother, who had been teaching and living in Singapore for the past 10 years, decided to drop by Paris for a few days on his way back from Asia en route to Ottawa. When friends of his, who are now living in Portugal, heard about his Paris stopover, they too, decided to fly in and join us for a few days. And then, a man I’d met some months ago was added to the mix. Now, instead of 10 days walking the streets of Paris all alone in the November rain, a party was shaping up. And, isn’t this life in all its glorious inconsistency and surprising IN THE CITY OF colours? I thought I wanted to run away to Paris, to escape the day-to-day, to find excitement, to reconnect with a part of me that had lain dormant for several years. And, as Paris is famous for doing, light it delivered all the magic in the world – the magic of life itself.

FOR SOME, THE APPEAL OF 70s-STYLE ARCHITECTURE NEVER REALLY WENT AWAY. THAT WAS CERTAINLY THE CASE FOR DESIGNER PHILIP CHOUINARD OF URBAN HOME WINDSOR AND RICK JEFFREY, WHOSE SOUTH WINDSOR

It was perfect. The home couldn’t have found two more ideal stewards than Philip and Rick. Artistic, creative, and steeped in 70s sensibility, they have retained the integrity of the home’s original design while making it their own. “It was built for a couple and their two daughters in the 70s and although it needed a bit of Philip, citing the preserved harvest gold, acorn, wood-burning fireplace updating, it was in excellent condition,” says in the centre of the living space as “the pièce de résistance.” Deeply avant-garde in its day, the home’s modern, clean, linear design is reminiscent of the type of homes built by Frank Lloyd Wright +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ and the notion of “bringing the outside in.” Diagonal plank cedar

The wall art is Philip’s own creation.

“Not only is it a cool look, it suits the house and is relatively cost- effective and maintenance-free.” To take full advantage of the forest-like setting, Philip recently completed an outdoor room with Backyard Escape Studios that functions as his art studio. A talented artist, many of his paintings hang throughout the home along with works of other artists, family heirlooms and antiques. “This home has many found pieces and collectibles from many eras and countries for a mélange of Mid-century and modern pieces, all sharing a common space with art and pottery mixed in to personalize the space,” he says. “Mixing old and new is a design must I’ve used in many homes I’ve styled for Urban Home.” That design philosophy is very much in play throughout the home – starting in the foyer where a cork feature wall is hung with four large canvasses by Windsor artist Michael Marcon – and lit by three original pendant lights from Ikea. The living area is defined by the iconic acorn ++++++++++++++++++++++++++ fireplace, which is enhanced by a custom sofa (Urban Home) that effortlessly channels 70s style with its leather frame, custom-designed TOP LEFT & LEFT: bench seat cushion and charcoal tweed/boucle upholstery. “It was Vintage chairs in meant to be textural, like a wool coat,” says Philip. the library were reupholstered in green The patchwork cowhide rugs found throughout the home “develop tweed and cowhide. their own patina as they wear down,” says Philip and “cowhide is not ABOVE: The kitchen only pet-friendly, it has its own colours and stories. So many options for your custom design. The vintage teak dining room table was found at Timeless Treasures. It bears the authentic made-in-Denmark stamp and is a very good example of Danish modern and Mid-century modern décor. The saucer light fixture and quirky eye clock are both examples of the work of designer George Nelson. The library makes you expect Mike Brady to walk through the door. Originally, Philip and Rick planned to create an office but found the location too distracting, so they turned it into a library/den. Vintage chairs were reupholstered in green tweed and cowhide, offset with silver nail heads. The striking 3D wooden wall piece was designed and built by Philip from off-cuts of the home’s original tongue-and-groove cedar siding. Nothing says 70s more than macramé – and the macramé hanging was made by Philip’s niece (her online store is called Cedar and Company) – who is very aptly named Farrah. Philip also created interesting art installations from the masks he has collected from vacations in Mexico, Cuba and South America. Downstairs, the basement is panelled in diagonal tongue- and-groove cedar, reminiscent of the home’s exterior. There are vintage collectibles that the couple found in antique and second-hand stores. “I love and appreciate other people’s art,” says Philip. “I want the discarded to be found and appreciated again. And it’s clear she has a talented eye for décor and design that has served her well. Nicole’s Seattle dining room table has found new life as a pair of window seats in the living room and the bench from that same set is now a console table in the upstairs hall. Her neighbour Steve Laing found a piece of wood “in a dirt pile” that, when refinished, became the mantel on her fireplace. Her shelving in the kitchen is reclaimed from a brewery in Old Sandwich Town and the barnboard that forms the striking door to her powder room is from a barn she helped one of her friends dismantle. We like to approach the task of seasonal décor as we would a wardrobe. Just as the weather defines the clothes you wear, so too should it play into what you have in your home. By layering some key elements into your décor, your space will be cosy as can be, regardless of the temperatures outside. Here are some of our favourite ways to crank up the heat, without ever touching the thermostat.

Accessorize in Layers Combine colours, patterns and various textures to lend your home a warmer overall visual impact. An area rug layered over a larger rug or wall-to-wall carpet creates a luxurious, plush effect. By the same logic, double-up on your cushions and throws, too.
