This year is fl ying by, it is hard to believe that July is already here. Mary Lou and I were very busy during the month of June and before we knew it the month was over. We started the month representing the Club at the Grosse Isle Commodore’s Ball. The ball had a Scottish theme, with the decorations and food created to provide a taste of Scotland. We then attended the Blessing of the Fleet ceremony continuing a long-standing tradition of the Club. On the fourteenth of the month we attended the Race. We ended the month joining the fl eet cruise to MacRay Harbour. Combining these activities with our work schedules provided us with a very busy month.

I would like to thank P/C Fr. Stan Fraser for once again presiding over our traditional Blessing of the Fleet. It was truly a very enjoyable event.

I would also like to thank P/C Rick Zangari and the Race committee for a great Cana- dian Club Race. The activities surrounding the race, both on and off the water, were well organized and orchestrated. It was a great day for the sailors who were participat- ing in the race as well as the spectators who watched from the patio.

This time of year the patio is by far the best area of the Club to sit and enjoy dinner or relax and have a drink. From the patio you are provided a great view of , the River and Lake St Clair. You can relax and watch the boats entering and leaving Lake St Clair, get a glimpse of the freighter traffi c on the or watch the various species of birds that frequent the waterway between the Club and the Island. Mary Lou and I enjoy the patio, spending as much time there as our schedules permit. There are still lots of good weather days ahead, come out and enjoy the patio. Financially, June was a good month for the Club. Our cash fl ow is strong and the bank accounts healthy. Our management staff work hard behind the scenes ensuring our records are accurate and up to date. Over all our fi nancial position is well controlled and in very good shape.

There are numerous events planned for the Club in the month of July. Please check the calendar in the Log as to when they are scheduled so that you do not miss out.

I also would like to remind everyone to make reservations when possible for the din- ing room and Club events as it helps us make your time at the Club enjoyable.

Mary Lou and I will be at the Club as much as we can and are looking forward to seeing you there… Your Place…On the water.

Frank

4 WWW.WINDSORYACHTCLUB.COM VICE COMMODORE’S REPORT GEORGE MCMAHON

The month started off with a very nice Blessing of the Fleet. I had the honour to participate in this traditional service that began centuries ago in Mediterranean fi shing communities and is meant to ensure a safe boating season. P/C Fr. Stan Fraser blessed over 25 boats that passed in procession in front of the Flag Offi cers. Those of you on the Patio also witnessed this wonderful tradition in its full splendour. Thanks to all who participated. This was quickly followed the next weekend by a Fleet Cruise to Robert and Cheryl Troup's SANDBAR. There our hosts welcomed approximately 80 guests to their restaurant and boat dock facilities. This is now a well-attended annual event by boaters and non-boaters alike. The following weekend P/C Rick Zangari and his Race Committee hosted our annual Canadian Club Race. Over 200 guests packed the Club on a gorgeous Friday afternoon to witness the 58 boats that passed by our Patio Wall. Members of the Race Committee also waited until four in the morning for those boats to cross the fi nish line. It was a great Race!

While this is all taking place Lance and his Entertainment Committee continue to spew out fi ne Friday evening music for all to enjoy. Both Stephanie and I were there to see Bigg Wiggle and enjoy the company of over 200 guests that attended to the Club that Friday evening. Come out Friday night for an hour or two - I know you'll enjoy it.

Mother Nature still throws us some curve balls; therefore, we had to move our Men's Day Event to July 10th. P/C Dan Caster and P/C Robert Troup are defi nitely working overtime to move all the various parts together again to accommodate the new date. We also had to get a few volunteers together to sandbag the north east corner of the Patio in case of fl ooding. Thanks to all who pitched in to make it happen.

Upcoming events are the Kid's Pool Party, Ladies Summer Social Dinner, Red Solo Cup Party and our Fleet Cruise to Algonac. Lots to do to entertain us - and give you every good reason to come out and join us at our wonderful Yacht Club.

Hopefully by the time you read this entry, the weather will somewhat resemble the warm summers of years passed that we all remember so fondly. The high water is creating havoc with many boaters in the area being severely affected. Many of our own WYC Members who keep their boats at the Lakeview Park Marina have been the most displaced with the full closure of the marina and their subsequent relocation to LaSalle, Belle River and wherever else they could manage to fi nd one of the few remaining coveted slips for the season. Wherever they are, we will all continue to gather together for our scheduled fl eet cruises and enjoy whatever comes. Bring on the sun! Our harbour is full this year with a waiting list that only became longer once the aforementioned closure of the city marina took place. Our docks are somewhat higher than our neighboring harbours and we continue to do the anti-rain dance in hopes of preventing any issues for us and our city in general. Mind you, if the water rises enough to affect our docks, we may have a lot more to worry about than a place to dock our boats. Our weekly sailing races are on hiatus right now until August, but we had a great spring session. I’ll attempt to describe to you what takes place each week to run these races, at least as well as a power boater can fi gure out what the heck is going on. We have a great group of WYC Member volunteers that run the races with a crew of seven out on Tomfoolery as well as three land-based crew Members. On any typical Wednesday night, we all head out at 6 PM and travel to the red race starting mark which is about 3 km into Lake St Clair. Once there, the crew will measure the wind speed and direction which then determines where Tomfoolery will be positioned in order to act as the other end of the starting line. Once anchored, I leave the helm and allow V/C George McMahon to take over in order to make the radio announcements to the racers. We also have two crew Members that take to the binoculars in order to do an inventory of the 30 to 40 boats that typically show up for each race, as well as two crew Members that hoist the various signaling fl ags up and down to start each race. Our weekly series has fi ve different starts spaced out fi ve minutes apart starting at 7 PM with the last start at 7:20 PM. Each start has boats of differing size and style, the difference of which can certainly not be described by a stink boater. During that time, I am either taking videos of the starts (if the wind is good and the action exciting) or cleaning the boat if it’s a boring night. (as observed by a power boater and jet skier with a need for speed!) P/C Rick Zangari is on the bridge making sure none of the boats cross the starting line before the big red cannon on the bow of the boat sounds. Back on shore, the ladies are waiting to record all the exact times that each boat crosses the fi nish line while P/C Terry Henry is sitting at the Race Committee fl ag marking each boat’s completion with a blast of the air horn. As you can see, once again, the WYC has a lot of Member volunteers who work hard to make sure our long held traditions carry on. Call me at 519-562-4849 if you would like to enquire about helping out in any way. After all, it’s Your Place…On the Water. Tom 7 ADVERTISING OPPORTUNITY CARRY YOUR MESSAGE!

I cannot believe how quickly June went by at the Club! With the annual Blessing of the Fleet, the Canadian Club Race – not to mention our weekly Spring Race Series and entertainment – WYC has been hopping. But there’s more to come. This month, Members can look forward to another fl eet cruise and the Kid’s Pool Party (July 14), Metro Day (July 10) as well as the Red Solo Cup Party (July 20) and Ladies Summer Social Dinner (July 17). If you haven’t yet reserved your spot, book now. I’d like to thank everyone for getting involved. It’s the way you truly get the most out of your Club! It’s great to see our Members liking WYC’s social media. It would be wonderful you could also share those images and videos with your friends and colleagues. That way, they can see why it’s such a great idea to join our Club. Be an ambassador! I also encourage you to submit photos of your great times at WYC (be it a special event or dinner with friends) to [email protected] so we can share them on Facebook and Twitter. A note to anyone taking videos with an Android phone – for compatibility reasons - shoot your video in landscape mode so they appear correctly when posted on social media. With only ten weeks left until Labor Day we need to make good use of every weekend. Rain or shine, rest assured, I’ll be donning my foul weather gear if need be.

Water levels continue to rise in the area, and I have been told that it will not crest until mid July. With that in mind, safety around the Club is a high priority. Testing of the water around each vessel for paralyzing electrical shock is ongoing to protect its Members. Swimming in any of the harbours is strictly prohibited. Please ensure cords are kept high and dry. If anyone notices anything out of the ordinary, please bring it to the attention of a Yards & Docks Committee Member.

In order to assist other WYC Members who moor their vessels in other marina’s and visiting reciprocal Clubs, please be mindful of notifying Tim when you will be away for more than 24 hours. Tim can be reached at- [email protected] This will give Tim the opportunity to better advise those who plan on visiting and enjoying what the greatest little Club on the water has to offer.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at the Club, Paul

Happy Canada Day! (as of this posting) So June has come and gone with a fl ash! Weather did not dampen our Blessing of the Fleet Day. Bigg Wiggle did not disappoint either as we jammed out in the dining room, patio and lookout rooms. Defi nitely our biggest dining night since I arrived in April. However, that title was put to bed by the C.C. Race Night the following week where we were even busier still!

I would like to welcome our newest addition to Chef BJ’s team ....Sous Chef Stan Spanos. I am told he has previous Club experience and I’m confi dent, as is the Chef, that he will fi t in seamlessly here with our great staff.

We did a soft rollout of a feature wine program I am trying to implement. As there have only been positive comments so far on the fi rst label I will be moving forward with some other labels this month.

A couple of Member Events to put on this month’s calendar include the re- scheduling of our Men’s Day on Wednesday July 10th. The annual Kids Pool party will be on Sunday July 14th. Some reservations have started to come in for the Ladies Summer Social with cocktails and a fresh summer plated entrée with dessert on Wednesday July 17th. Finally, The Red Cup Solo Party will take place on Saturday July 20th; reservations are open for this Full Facility Event. Email [email protected]

Racing Night will not be happening during the month of July as I’m sure everyone knows. Remember also, the bar is now open at 9am with our Sunday Breakfast service. As always suggestions and requests are very much welcome……..

22 WWW.WINDSORYACHTCLUB.COM RACE REPORT RICK ZANGARI

As I write this report, we have just completed the 47th Annual Canadian Club Invitational Yacht Race. We had 58 boats sail past the Club to receive their memento from Canadian Club and 2 – 70’ boats that couldn’t get close enough to receive theirs. Overall we had 61 boats start and fi nish the race. Phantom, from Crescent Sail Yacht Club was the fi rst boat to fi nish at 11:03:30, after sailing the short course. The overall winner was Equation, out of Bayview Yacht Club. They fi nished the long course at 11:52:12. The last boat to fi nish was Susan Marie. They fi nished at 03:51:13 and received the traditional “Double Cannon”. I want to thank all the members of the Race Committee for their work throughout the spring series and during the Canadian Club race. I also want to thank P/C Dan Caster, Dan Lambden and Lady Sandie and Terry and Lady Nancy Turner for taking out our Canadian Club guests on their boats. Thanks also to John Shorten for the photography. Our Wednesday night series is taking a summer break until August 14th. The Fall Series starts on Wednesday August 14th. Even though there won’t be any race fi nishes for you to watch, our patio is still the best place to sit by the river. See you around the Club, P/C Rick Zangari

24 WWW.WINDSORYACHTCLUB.COM HOUSE REPORT RUTH HEBERT

Welcome to Summer! One of the best spots in Windsor, is right here on our own patio at WYC! Whether it be on a Friday night with friends or on a quiet Sunday afternoon with you and your sweetheart, you can’t beat the view. For your best dining and refreshment experience, we ask that you let us know that you will be joining us ahead of time if possible. We know that sometimes last-minute decisions are made and reservations are overlooked, however to make your experience memorable we want to ensure you receive the best service. By assisting us with this, we can have the right amount of staff on hand to achieve the great experience we all strive for. Although, we don’t take reservations on the patio, if we are aware that you are coming, we can ensure that both wait and galley are staffed appropriately. Hope that the weather improves so we will be able to enjoy the best spot on the river! Remember it’s Your Place….On the Water!

Ruth MARINE TRAFFIC REPORT Did you know that your Club, Windsor Yacht Club, is a member of a worldwide known website? The Windsor Yacht Club is a receiving station for MarineTraffi c.com, (Global Ship Tracking Intelligence | AIS Marine Traffi c), headquartered in Athens, Greece. This website shows you a worldwide live map of the earth’s waterways. WYC is a receiving station for Tankers, Freighters, Cruise Ships and Pleasure Craft within a reception distance of Avg.: 7.5/Max. 9.7 shown in nautical miles, Area Covered 369 km². You can register your boat on MarineTraffi c if you have a MMSI number, most VHF radios have this available now. As long as you have data available you can transmit your boat location on the Great Lakes or anywhere in the world. Your family and friends are also able to track your location whether you are on the water or not as long as your register your boat with MarineTraffi c. www.marinetraffi c.com Something else good to know, the WYC Fleet Captain or any boater can fi le a Float Plan which is highly recommended by the Coast Guard, Border Agencies and Canadian Power and Sail Squadron, where family and friends can see what your destination is. Our Windsor Yacht Club receiving is Station no. 4047. We have been receiving signals since early 2018. Our equipment was provided to us at no cost by MarineTraffi c. The MarineTraffi c organization also monitors our online time and we are acknowledged by being awarded badges for recognition. One of the advantages with the application is you can search info for any tanker, freighter, cruise ship, as well as your own vessel regarding length, width, year built, cargo and country of origin and more options than stated. Once registered. you can also upload pictures and specs of your vessel so others can see the details of your boat . Don’t be surprised if you see similar boat names as yours several times when you register. 25 Div. of Windsor-Essex Janitorial Inc. 2019 CHILDREN’S FISHING DERBY THANK YOU!

On May 25, the WYC hosted 34 children at the annual fi shing derby along with dozens of parents and grandparents. While everyone came out in eager anticipation of reeling in “the big one”, the silver bass decided it was time for a siesta and stayed safely out in Lake St Clair for the day. Thankfully, we had lots of minnows (thanks to John St Pierre!) for the kids to play with. Luckily it was one of the fi rst perfect weather days of the year and everyone in attendance enjoyed being out in the sun. Congratulations to our “biggest fi sh” winners Hunter and Joseph along with our “most fi sh” winners Zack and Wesley. All four took home beautiful trophies – in some cases the fi rst trophies they have ever won! Thank You to Mary Colthurst, Bambi Blondin and Janice Bechard for helping to measure of all the fi sh that were reeled in – it can be quite the sight to watch them measure the fi sh for the kids. All the kids also appreciated the efforts of our in-house “professional shopper” Cindy St Pierre for picking out all the toys that every single one of them went home with. P/C Chris Colthurst and P/C Denis Blondin were also invaluable in providing the audit skills to ensure an accurate count of all the fi sh reeled in. Our biggest “Thank You” goes out to all the Members named below whose fi nancial contributions make the annual fi shing derby the great success it is. You are the Members that make the WYC such a great Club! Thank You to… Chris Abt Don Rodzik Jack Sullens Greg Barlow Ron LaBute Stewart Dawson Brad Somers Chris Busch Bob Coulter Nick Colthurst Paul Ouellette Tim O’Sullivan Dan Lambden P/C Randy Moir P/C Dan Caster P/C Rob Troup P/C Brian Ducharme P/C Jerry Holt P/C Chris Colthurst P/C Stan Fraser P/C Terry Henry P/C Brian LaBute P/C Ken Crooks P/C Denis Blondin P/C Don Willson P/C Gary Tingle P/C Alan Johnson P/C Rick Zangari P/C Ted Saxby P/C Daniel Hofgartner V/C George McMahon Comm Frank Dolan
