D. SERVICE ACTIVITIES Four times I was invited to go to the Solar Energy Research Institute (now the National Renewable Energy Lab.) in Golden, CO to be on project review panels. Graduate Coordinator, Energy Engineering Program (Solar Option) (1996 - 34 present) Member of the Advisory Committee of the U Mass Lowell Office of Community Service (1996-2004). I donated over 1200 hours to the design, construction, and operation of the U Mass Lowell solar car for the Sunrayce 93. Our group received a first place award for teamwork (for overcoming the most obstacles) and came in eighth out of 34 in the race. I was responsible for operating, maintaining, monitoring, and upgrading the UML electric bus, the first electric bus in New England/New York, which operated every school day from March 1995 to May 1997 linking the university campuses with the Gallagher train station and Middlesex Community College. The bus operated at Logan Airport during the summers of 1996 and 1997 as part of the Clean Air Partners program. I have integrated service-learning projects into nine courses, reportedly more than any engineering professor in the U.S. I have led seventeen groups of students to remote medical clinics in Peru to help install student-designed solar systems for vaccine refrigeration, transceiver radios, lights, and water purification. I have also worked with students for Habitat for Humanity in the design and construction/rehabilitation of energy efficient homes, with AmeriCorps in river water quality monitoring, and with the local Cambodian Mutual Assistance Association in aquaculture system development.
