El estreno mundial del Calendario 2012/2013 se inicia precisamente en España. En concreto en Atapuerca, la localidad burgalesa que con el apoyo incondicional de la Diputación de Burgos organiza un cross que en tan sólo nueve años ha visto como se ha situado en el podio de las grandes citas mundiales, gracias a la excelencia organizativa y al nivel de los atletas que compiten en él, sin olvidar ni descuidar la base participativa. Este año, en el circuito ubicado en el Parque Tecnológico de Atapuerca, junto a los atletas de élite de países como Gran Bretaña, Italia, Portugal, Irlanda, Marruecos, Kenia, Eritrea, Etiopía, Uganda, Argentina y por supuesto de España, participan un total de 3.000 atletas en el total de categorías. Todo un dato que sirve como referencia del culto que esta organización presta por la base. El programa de competición en Atapuerca comienza a las 10 de la mañana, mientras que las dos pruebas estelares, la absoluta de mujeres y la de hombres se celebran a las 12,30 y 14,00 horas respectivamente. IMANE MERGA Y LISET MASAI, CABEZAS DE CARTEL La participación de élite es tan extraordinaria que en esta previa informaremos exclusivamente del amplio elenco de atletas extranjeros, mientras que en futuras informaciones nos referiremos a la participación española. En hombres sobresale la presencia de Imane Merga (Etiopía), el actual Campeón del Mundo de la especialidad, un título que ganó en Punta Umbría (Huelva). Su gran historial lo adorna con la medalla de bronce en 10.000 m.l. lograda en el Mundial de Daegu’2011. Etiopía también estará representada por Dejen Gebremeskal, medalla de bronce en 5.000 m.l. en Daegu’2011 y subcampeón olímpico de esa distancia en Londres’2012. Los grandes rivales de los atletas etíopes serán los keniatas Vincent Chepkok, medalla de bronce en Punta Umbría, Emmanuel Bett, líder mundial del año en 10.000 m.l. con 26:51.16, y Clement Lengat, el actual campeón de cross de África. La excelente participación africana la completa el eritreo Teklemariam Medhim, subcampeón mundial de cross en 2010. Por parte europea, atención a la presencia del italiano Daniele Meucci, subcampeón de Europa de 10.000 m.l. en 2012 y medalla de bronce en 2010, y del portugués José Rocha, medalla de bronce en el Europeo de cross de 2011.. En féminas resalta la gran Linet Masai (KEN), tres veces subcampeona mundial de cross en 2009, 2010 y 2011, además de bronce en 2008 y campeona mundial de 10.000 m.l. en 2009. Kenia completa su gran equipo con Priscah Cherono, subcampeona mundial en 2006 y medalla de bronce en 5.000 m.l. en el Mundial de 2007, y con la prometedora Mercy Cherono, campeona mundial júnior de 3.000 m.l. en 2008 y 2010. Por parte etíope, competirán Oljira Belaynesh, finalista olímpica de 10.000 m.l. en Londres’2012, y Hiwot Wude, finalista olímpica de 3.000 obstáculos en la capital británica. Otra destacada atleta es la eritrea Nazaret Weldu que el año pasado se impuso en cinco carreras de cross del calendario español (Valladolid, San Sebastián, Amorebieta, Cáceres y Maliaño). Entre las atletas europeas brillan la británica Fiounnala Briton, actual campeona de Europa, y la portuguesa Sara Moreira, subcampeona europea de 5.000 m.l. en 2010 y 2012..

Now in its 10th year, the 2019 series will be the first that will conclude just weeks before a global championships. Athletes earn points in the first 12 meetings to qualify for two finals. As part of the overall US$8million in prize money available across the series, the finals offer a prize purse of US$3.2 million. $100,000 is at stake in each of the 32 Diamond disciplines, including $50,000 for each winner along with a stunning Diamond Trophy and a wildcard entry to the IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019. In 2018, 360 million viewers from across 161 countries spanning all six continents worldwide watched the world’s top athletes compete in the IAAF Diamond League, an increase of about 78 million on the previous year. Further emphasising the IAAF Diamond League’s global credentials, athletes from 83 different countries took part in the 2018 season, with 34 of them producing winners across the series. The 2019 IAAF Diamond League – which takes place in Africa, Asia, Europe and North America – will set the scene for the world’s third-largest sporting event.
