Jurnal Komunikasi, Malaysian Journal of Communication Jilid 26(2): 17-32 MALAYSIAN REALITY TV: BETWEEN MYTH AND REALITY JULIANA ABDUL WAHAB UNIVERSITI SAINS MALAYSIA Abstract The privatization policy that was introduced in 1983 by the Mahathir administration opened up the flood gates for the establishment of TV stations run on a commercial basis as well as for Malaysian media practitioners to produced more local programmes. However, most of the locally produced programmes tend to be mere copies of the western genres. The popularization of these genres is also an indicative of the process of the globalization that has taken place. Since 2000, Malaysian television industry has witnessed the mush- rooming of a ‘new’ television genre called reality TV. The ‘new’ genre was popularized by the introduction of reality TV game shows, namely Survivor and Amazing Race, which received favourable response from the Malaysian audiences. Subsequently, Malaysian’s first version of reality game show, Explorace was introduced on TV3. The phenomenon spreads rapidly in the later years. Satellite TV station Astro, on its part, has redefined and introduced a ver- sion of musical type reality TV, Akademi Fantasia which become a huge craze in Malaysia. Since then, more and more so-called reality TV shows within the musical programmes have inundated almost every local television channel. The study attempts to trace the development of locally produced reality TV shows and to as- sess this phenomenon within the context of the Malaysian televi- sion industry and within the process of globalization. Equally im- portant, the study seeks to uncover the myth and reality of the new genre.

Exploiting Idols A case study of international TV formats trading in the absence of intellectual property protection1 Authors2: Martin Kretschmer & Sukhpreet Singh 1 Forthcoming 2010 in Robert Burnett & A.J. Zwaan (eds), Your Fans are Waiting: An academic volume on Idol. Research for this case study was funded under ESRC (UK) Grant No. RES–186–27–0012 (2008-09): ‘The Exploitation of Television Formats: Intellectual property and non-law based strategies’. 2 Sukhpreet Singh ([email protected]) is an Associate Lecturer in Media Management and a Research Fellow at the Centre for Intellectual Property Policy and Management, Bournemouth University, UK. Martin Kretschmer ([email protected]) is Professor of Information Jurisprudence and Director of the Centre for Intellectual Property Policy and Management (www.cippm.org.uk). Martin Kretschmer was the principal investigator of the ESRC project; Sukhpreet Singh was the lead researcher, carrying out the bulk of the empirical work. The research design was developed jointly. We would like to acknowledge the contribution of Jon Wardle, Director of the Centre for Excellence in Media Practice at Bournemouth University, www.cemp.ac.uk), who (as a co-applicant of the ESRC grant) was responsible for the digital resource of the project: http://tvformats.bournemouth.ac.uk. 1 Abstract Television formats have become a major export industry for Britain and the United States (who together account for nearly two thirds of all format hours broadcast annually worldwide). Yet, there is no such thing as a television format right under copyright law. Any producer is free to develop game, reality and talent shows that are based on similar ideas.

  • Reality Television Programs in Malaysia: a Dream Come True?
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Sunway Institutional Repository Sunway Academic Journal 3, 73–86 (2006) REALITY TELEVISION PROGRAMS IN MALAYSIA: A DREAM COME TRUE? MOY TOW YOONa Sunway University College ROMANA GARMAb Victoria University, Melbourne ABSTRACT Reality television programs have changed the media landscape drastically since the turn of the millennium. Owing to its interactive nature, reality television has become a highly marketable advertising vehicle. In view of its rising popularity and potential in marketing, the influence of these programs is of public interest. This study examines what motivates the viewers in Malaysia to watch reality television programs. Using factor analysis, five motivation factors were extracted: suspense; personal identity and social interaction; engaging/entertaining; romance or attractiveness of contestants; sensation seeking. Three MANOVA models were used to explore the relationship between group differences due to gender, age, education background and the composite of the five motivational factors. Significant multivariate effects were found for all the three models considered. Univariate effects were also found for three of the factors, revealing some interesting findings of those who are fascinated by reality television programs in Malaysia. Key words: Reality television programs, motivation, involvement, factor analysis, reliability analysis, MANOVA. INTRODUCTION When the television program Survivor debuted in the summer of 2000 in North America, the “reality television” genre became intensely popular. Subsequently, many new reality shows have been launched everywhere. The dramatic rise in the popularity of reality television shows at the present time can be considered as phenomenal in the world media landscape.
