ANNUAL REPORT 2017 LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT • 2017 Dear Friend of TVW: For more than 22 years, TVW has opened the work of state government to the people of Washington and the world. Through gavel-to-gavel coverage of government deliberations and public policy events from around the state, to award-winning programming focused on issues of statewide significance, TVW continues to offer a lens into the inner workings of state government. Following the elections of 2016, we saw a renewed interest in civics, civic engagement, and civil discourse. Seizing the opportunity to tell our story to a new audience, TVW launched Celebrating Civics! providing an opportunity for communities to engage in helping the next generation have a solid understanding of the way governments work and smart strategies to impact change in positive ways. We held our first event in 2017, with subsequent events scheduled in 2018. Even with special sessions taking the Legislature well into July, TVW produced 1,977 hours of gavel-to-gavel programming, produced shows, and public policy events in communities from Olympia to Spokane. In 2017, we were able to begin utilizing cameras installed late in 2016 in the Governor’s Conference Room, significantly improving our ability to cover bill signings, press conferences, and other activities occurring there. Late in the year, we also installed robotic cameras in the new Helen Sommers Building which allows us to cover a number of events in this new state facility in a much more efficient way while providing a road map for future installations in other state agency buildings. 2017 also brought the production of two new shows – TVW@Large takes a look at how the work accom- plished in Olympia impacts the rest of the state, and The Decision focuses on the work of the Supreme Court, highlighting a select group of cases, the history behind them, and “the decision.” While 2017 was an exciting year in many ways I’m even more excited about our future! Daily, I am im- pressed and encouraged by our dedicated and professional team. Our staff is changing the way Washingto- nians understand and interact with their government and, because of them, TVW continues to be an innova- tive and invigorating place to be. And finally, I am extremely grateful to our loyal viewers, donors and Board members for making our unique, challenging, and remarkable adventure such a rewarding experience. Thanks for making this journey with us.
