Wray Associate Professor of Biobehavioral Health *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School iii ABSTRACT Women’s empowerment, which is the focus of the United Nation’s fifth Sustainable Development Goal, has been a concern of the global community for several years. While empowerment is defined and measured in various ways, scholars believe that a context-based definition is required to measure empowerment in developing countries due to their different cultural, political, and economic circumstances (Tosun, 2002; Tucker & Boonabaana, 2012). This is particularly true when it comes to measuring women’s empowerment resulting from development such as tourism. The role of tourism development on perceptions of women’s roles and responsibilities has been influential to the extent that communities no longer expect women to focus only on reproduction, they, too, can work outside the home, take on leadership responsibilities, and more (Khani, 2012). To explore the intersection between women’s empowerment and tourism development, this study focused on the experiences of local women in one tourism destination—Ramsar province in Northern Iran. The research question I answered was: What are women’s perspectives on empowerment? In answering this question I uncovered women’s perspectives on empowerment and the degree to which tourism development may have affected their perspective. Using a qualitative approach, I uncovered 10 themes pertaining to women’s perspective on empowerment. The themes included having a formal job or an informal activity (e.g., raising vegetables for family use), and being good-tempered, risk taking, brave, and responsible. They also included being a game changer who influences others iv and efficiently doing their job and achieving their goals; challenging norms (e.g., selecting their preferred hejab); being trusted and involved in philanthropic activities; being financially (e.g., having income) and intellectually (e.g., making decisions and expressing ideas) independent; taking care of their family (e.g., support husband, children, and family members) and managing their house (e.g., cleaning, cooking, managing household finance) at the same time; being sociable and able to interact with people from different cultures; being educated and/or informed about societal issues; making progress through nurturing successful children and contributing financially and non-financially to the survival of their family; and having faith in God and being hopeful that God will help them when they are in need. One-half of the women believed they were empowered. The other women, who identified as “somewhat empowered” or “not empowered,” believed their limited or non- existent empowerment was due to their inability to reach their goals, find a job, balance their work life and home life, and/or because of their limited work experience. Hence, the results indicated that empowerment is not a zero-sum concept. There is a spectrum for empowerment that includes empowered, somewhat empowered, and not empowered, all of which present differently in terms of what constitutes empowerment. In addition, the study provided evidence of “leveled empowerment,” suggesting that a woman can feel empowered and not empowered at the same time. These perceptions have their roots in a woman’s own expectations and priorities. These findings are in contrast with templates offered in the literature, which propose two categories of empowerment—empowered v and disempowered (e.g., Boley, Ayscue, Maruyama, & Woosnam, 2017; Panta & Thapa, 2017; Scheyvens, 1999). Through applying an inductive approach, which is unlike most deductive studies conducted with women in Iran, this study contributed to the literature by uncovering 10 themes associated with empowerment, 2 of which (i.e., behavioral characteristics and faith) are new to the literature. Mengkudu is a plant that has many advantages and carbohydrate content as 51,67%. Coconut fiber has high enough cellulose content as 43,44%, with high carbohydrate content and high cellulose content they can be utilized as basic ingredient in the making of bioethanol. The purpose of this research is to determine the best condition in the process of making bioethanol from them. Bioethanol was made by fermentation which was helped by bactery, that was Saccaromyches cerevisae or often known as bread yeast. The results of this research were obtained fermentation time and volume of the stater used in making bioethanol from mengkudui fruit in order to get the best content bioetanol is in 60 hours using a stater volume of 10% which produces 6.26% bioethanol, while for the manufacture of bioethanol from waste Coconut coir is at 72 hours using a 6 gr volume of starch which produces bioethanol 13.80%. These factors include the ever-increasing population and urbanization, technological developments, change in attitudes and lifestyle, rural-urban migrations, people’s attachment to their birthplace and reverse migrations, the rise of villagers’ capitals, economic reconstruction, rural destitution, and development of transportation and communication. This study has been initially concerned with exploring the number of second homes across the world. The configuration and spatial model of second homes have then been studied. The study area covers rural regions of Ramsar County in Mazandaran province (4 rural districts including 256 villages and settlements). Geographically speaking, this area encompasses four major regions: coastal, plain, foothill, and highland. The findings suggest that there are 7674 second homes (56.30% of total residential units) spread over the area’s rural regions. Distance from the city and rural road decide second home configuration and residential density. Also, there can be observed two types of houses: modern and traditional. There is a temporary population of almost 30660 in Ramsar County, constituting 43.8% of the total population of 70000. Field studies and library research shape the present study.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the attitude of the local community towards the development of ecotourism, its effects and consequences, their level of support, and the factors affecting it. Method: The method is survey and cross-sectional. The sample of the study consists of households of Janat Rudbar in Ramsar, Mazandaran. Research data was collected by applying census method. Findings: The results of the research showed that, firstly, the attitude of the local community towards ecotourism is positive; secondly, the local community is aware of the socio-cultural, economic, and environmental impacts of the rural development projects; and, finally, the level of support of the local community of ecotourism development is relatively high. Moreover, the results of the research have shown that there is a relationship between local community supports from ecotourism development projects and socioeconomic components. Practical Solutions: The approach towards ecotourism is effective in its success in terms of improving the quality of life both for local people and their environment.

    Statistical analysis of wind force ACCEPTED MANUSCRIPT Mehrab Ekraghanbari1, Ehsan Jahani2* 1 M.Sc., Department of Civil Engineering, University of Mazandaran, Babolsar, Iran 2 Department of Civil Engineering, University of Mazandaran, Babolsar, Iran ABSTRACT In this study, at first, the maximum wind speed has investigated in exchange for different return periods in Ramsar, Nowshahr, Qaemshahr and Babolsar city. For this reason, data associated with the wind maximum annual speed in these cities have been collected from 1373 to 1397. To calculate the maximum wind speed, first- order Extreme Type I distribution has been used. It has also been attempted to examine the probability of wind speed distribution of case study cities according to different functions. For this purpose, different functions such as Normal function, Weibull function, Lognormal function, Gamble Max function, Gamma function and Bur function have used. Also, in this study, for the design of various functions, the EasyFit software has been used. Results show that the maximum wind speed as well as wind-based pressure for Ramsar, Nowshahr and Qaemshahr cities have found to be numerically larger than the Iranian National Building Code (Part 6th). However, for Babolsar, these values are less than the values of the Iranian National Building Code. Unfortunately, the results showed that the design was not safe for Ramsar, Nowshahr and Qaemshar cities based on this code, because the structures should be designed to be less than the maximum wind speed and lower wind pressure than the actual values. Considering the importance of analyzing and precisely designing structures against wind and speed wind, it seems that similar research should be done for other cities in order to obtain validate and safe values for those cities.
