She is interested in collection development, statistical analysis of library use data and intellectual property searching. Erdmann is also Purdue's Representative to the Patent and Trademark Depository Library Program and is active in the Engineering Libraries Division, American Society for Engineering Education and the Patent and Trademark Depository Library Association. Page 14.314.1 Page © American Society for Engineering Education, 2009 Changing Library Vendor Contracts: A Case Study in Acquiring E- Books from an Online Book Vendor Abstract Safari Tech Books Online offers several options for providing computer books to campus users. Purdue University used the vendor for 1 ½ years and discovered that the current titles option was not working as well as expected. The option included providing access to the current year and two previous years for all available publishers and was less labor-intensive for the library staff. A statistical analysis was done that examined the use patterns, including most heavily used books and publishers, as well as books with and without catalog records. This paper discusses the new option chosen and compares the statistical use patterns before and after the change. The university library ultimately changed its plan to more closely meet user needs by limiting the number of publishers, maintaining high use titles, and selecting specific titles as needed. Additionally, problems that were encountered before and after the change are discussed.

  • ENGLISH LITERATURE Summer Learning SET TEXTS FOR
ENGLISH LITERATURE Summer Learning SET TEXTS FOR AUTUMN TERM These are the books you need to buy and read before the course begins. Check the ISBN number carefully before you order so that you get the right edition! Remember: these are the two most important books on this summer reading list. So not only will you need to make sure that you have actually read them, you will also need to make sure that you have read them well. According to David Lodge, 'narrative, whatever its medium – words, film, strip cartoon – holds the interest of an audience by raising questions in their minds, and delaying the answers.' You need to be very alert to this on your first reading, as you can never have that first reading again. On any subsequent reading, you will already have a knowledge of the story as a whole, which will inform your reading of any of the parts. So, whenever you close the books below, stop, summarise what you've read, and the questions that these pages you’ve read raise – whether that's about what's going on, who that character that's just been introduced is, what they're referring to, or what you think it might mean for us and how we live our lives today. There is no question too big or too small. Record these questions as they occur to you, in a reading journal, and bring this with you on the first day of term. The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood (1996 edition, Vintage, ISBN: 978-0099740919) There's a reason this is now a 'smash hit TV series'; in fact, there are several.

  • Newcastle University Children's Literature Unit Seven Stories
Newcastle University Children’s Literature Unit Seven Stories Check-List of Books on the History, Criticism and Theory of Children’s Literature 6th Edition August 2014 Peter Hunt Visiting Professor, Newcastle University, UK [email protected] This check-list comprises English-language books and substantial pamphlets; booklists, conference papers, and special issues of journals are included where they seem likely to be of lasting value or have acquired historical interest. The core subject-area of ‘children’s literature’ is, of course, overlapped by dozens of specialisations, and books are designed for different audiences. I have included only those texts that seem to me to be directly and substantially relevant to my idea of the core; I have not made any decisions on the basis of quality. I have excluded titles whose relevance to the core seems to me to be marginal (for example, biographies of Kipling), specialist areas which do not directly relate to children’s literature (for example, studies of folk-lore), ephemera (booklists or books that have dated severely), mass-market products (for example, popular biographies of J. K. Rowling), and books focussed primarily on classroom applications. Many authors have accumulated significant numbers of specialist studies (Carroll, Ransome, Philip Pullman, L. Frank Baum, George Macdonald and so on) and there has been a proliferation of fan and niche publishers (notably on religion). It is clearly impossible to include all of these; I have provided a sampling as a basis for electronic searches. Much scholarship can be found in Annotated Editions of children’s ‘classics’, and these can be found in the new Check-List of Annotated Editions of Children’s Books on this web-site.

  • The British Library the Harlem Renaissance
THE BRITISH LIBRARY THE HARLEM RENAISSANCE: A SELECTIVE GUIDE TO MATERIALS AT THE BRITISH LIBRARY (REVISED) By Jean Petrovic 2017 Page Introduction 2 Participants in the Harlem Renaissance 4 General Works 107 1 INTRODUCTION The rich surge in African American arts and letters that took place in 1920s was not limited to Harlem, nor even to New York City. However, the intensity of the movement in that city, and the sheer number of black writers, musicians, and scholars who lived and worked in Harlem has ensured that it is forever linked with the era. Today most historians recognise 1917 as the year in which the Harlem Renaissance began. Three events occurred that help to justify this choice. First was the publication of two poems by Claude McKay in Seven Arts, the first work by a black writer to appear under a white imprimatur since Paul Lawrence Dunbar’s dialect pieces twenty years before. Second was the opening on Broadway of three plays about black life by a white writer, Ridgely Torrence. These plays were remarkable not only because they were performed by black artists but because they contained none of the usual racial stereotypes. Finally, on 28 July Harlem experienced its first Silent Parade when some ten to fifteen thousand African Americans marched down Fifth Avenue to protest against continued racial inequities. Eighteen years later, in the grip of the Great Depression, the first race riot erupted in Harlem and it is this year, 1935, that is generally regarded as marking the end of the Renaissance. To understand the Harlem Renaissance it is necessary to appreciate both the changes that occurred within the African American community and the cultural shifts that took place in American society as a whole during the 1920s.
