Disraeli admired Clay’s life of ‘splendid adventure’, his skill at cards, rackets and billiards, and his ease in society. ‘To govern men, you must either excel in their accomplishments – or despise them. Clay does one: I do the other, and we are equally popular,’ Disraeli wrote in a letter to his father on 27 August 1830 (Disraeli, Letters, 1.155). (The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography).

Clay was the MP for Hull from 1847-1853, when he was unseated after a bribery incident. Four years later, he regained the seat at a by-election and held it until his death. He was also an amateur composer. He married Eliza Camilla Woolrych (an opera singer) and they had six children.
