Sidden Doctor of Philosophy Department of Theater Arts June 2014 Title: Amas Repertory Theatre: Passing as Black While Becoming White Amas Repertory Theatre was founded in 1969 by Rosetta LeNoire, an African American actress who pursued a mission of developing original musicals while practicing interracial casting. The company’s most successful show was Bubbling Brown Sugar (1975). Throughout Amas’s history LeNoire’s complicated perspective on what constituted discrimination sometimes caused her casting choices to be questioned. LeNoire believed in a colorblind theatre and society, however, as the decades passed, her colorblind perspective was challenged by neo-conservative philosophy which states that in a colorblind society no particular group should receive any more privilege than another. This definition of colorblind is used to justify conservative efforts to eliminate affirmative action and undermine race conscious legislation. In the late 1990s, at her retirement, LeNoire, who always believed that color did not matter, turned her theatre over to white leadership, who still operate Amas today. At that point, Amas changed from a company that had, from its founding, been considered to be a black theatre to one that is now white. As the history of Amas unfolds, my study examines the complex politics surrounding the concept of colorblindness. Efforts by Actors’ Equity to promote interracial or, as it is often called, nontraditional casting are also investigated as well as the conservative backlash against race conscious policies, particularly during and after the iv administration of Ronald Reagan. In the present day Amas practices a multicultural mission, however, as my dissertation examines the company’s programming decisions as well as its perspective on race, Amas is revealed to be an example of how white operated theatres, even if unintentionally, through the agency of white power and privilege, are affected by the same institutional racism that permeates American society. My dissertation then challenges Amas and other theatres to take responsibility for staying fully aware of the racially charged issues and tensions that exist in America today. When theatre professionals seek out and are committed to engaging in open dialogue on race they are in a stronger position to make knowledgeable decisions regarding the representation of race on stage. v CURRICULUM VITAE NAME OF AUTHOR: Jean H. Built 1924-25; architects, Crane & Franzheim. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 1024, Lot 7. On June 14 and 15, 1982, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the ANTA Theater and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 5). The hearing was continued to October 19, 1982. Both hearings had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Eighty-three witnesses spoke in favor of designation. Two witnesses spoke in opposition to designation. The owner, with his representatives, appeared at the hearing, and indicated that he had not formulated an opinion regarding designation. The Commission has received many letters and other expressions of support in favor of this designation. DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS The ANTA Theater survives today as one of the historic theaters that symbolize American theater for both New York and the nation. Built in the 1924-25, the ANTA was constructed for the Theater Guild as a subscription playhouse, named the Guild Theater. The fourrling Guild members, including actors, playwrights, designers, attorneys and bankers, formed the Theater Guild to present high quality plays which they believed would be artistically superior to the current offerings of the commercial Broadway houses. More than just an auditorium, however, the Guild Theater was designed to be a theater resource center, with classrooms, studios, and a library. The theater also included the rrost up-to-date staging technology.

It focuses on earlier events such as W. E. B. Du Bois’ editorship of The Crisis and some follow-up of major discussions beyond the period. The handbook also investigates and compiles a large segment of scholarship devoted to the historical and cultural activities of the Harlem Renaissance (1910—1940). The study discusses the “New Negro” and the use of the term.     Catalogue of Photographs of Performers and Shows in the Archives of the Embassy Theatre Foundation The archives of the Embassy Theatre Foundation hold more than 3000 artifacts, including more than 600 photographs of vaudevillians inscribed to Bud Berger (long-time stage man- ager at the Embassy Theatre, known as the Emboyd until 1952); more than 300 posters, playbills, programs, stools, and even guitars signed by the stars and casts of shows that have played at the Embassy Theatre over the past forty years, rang- ing from classic and current Broadway shows to acrobatic groups, choral ensembles, dance shows, ballet, stand-up comedians, rock bands, country singers, travel films, silent films, theatre organists, and so on; and hundreds of publicity photographs of performers, shows, and events at the theatre, primarily from the period following the establishment of the Embassy Theatre Foundation and its rescue of the theatre from the wrecking ball in 1975; and a nearly complete run of the journal of the American Theatre Organ Society. The archive is now almost fully catalogued and preserved in archival housing. Earlier excerpts from the catalogue (available on the Archives page of the Embassy Theatre’s web site) cover the photographs inscribed to Bud Berger and the posters, playbills, programs, stools, and so on from later shows at the Embassy. This is the third excerpt, covering the public- ity photographs of the last forty-five years and a few photographs of earlier events, Bud Berger, and other members of the stage crew.     Lou Bellamy 2006 Distinguished Artist Lou Bellamy 2006 Distinguished Artist The McKnight Foundation Introduction spotlight is a funny thing. It holds great potential to expose and clarify whatever lies within its glowing circle—but for that to happen, eyes outside the pool of light must be focused Aon what’s unfolding within. Theater gains meaning only through the community that generates, participates in, and witnesses it. For McKnight Distinguished Artist Lou Bellamy and his Penumbra Theatre Company, using one’s talents to connect important messages to community is what art is all about. Bellamy believes that theater’s purpose is to focus the community’s attention and engage people in the issues we face together. He relishes the opportunity life has presented to him: to work in an African American neighborhood and develop art responsive to that neighborhood, while presenting ideas that are universal enough to encourage a world of diverse neighborhoods to take notice. This is not a spectator sport. Bellamy is a strong proponent of active art, art driven to do something. Ideally, audience members should see what’s onstage and listen to the message, then carry that message with them when they leave the theater. “You put all these people in a room,” he has said, “turn out the lights, and make them all look at one thing. You’ve got something powerful in that room.” More than 40,000 people experience that power annually, in Penumbra’s 265-seat theater in St. Paul. Universal messages are not crafted through European American templates only, and Bellamy recognizes that presenting a multifaceted reality means showing all the rays of light that pass through it.
