The champion underlined his greatness with a last to fi rst win in the Tattersall’s WS Cox Plate (2000m) at Moonee Valley in October, his last race start at the grand old age of nine years. 24 MelbourneFestivalofRacing 07.indd 24 3/1/07 12:30:53 PM FUTURITY STAKES FUTURITY STAKES Futurity Stakes (1600m) – Caufi eld Saturday, 4 March 2006 Of $700000 and $2000 trophy. 1st $420000 and $2000 trophy, 2nd $126000, 3rd $63000, 4th $31500, 5th $17500, 6th $14000, 7th $14000, 8th $14000. The Melbourne Racing Club made the change to bring the Futurity into the Asian Mile Series. It wasn’t the fi rst time the distance has changed for this premier sprint at Caulfi eld. In 1979, the distance was raised to 1800m. The resilient Fields Of Omagh stuck his head out to win the Futurity. The extra distance was in his favour, but more likely Fields Of Omagh surprised with his courageous win over Red Dazzler and Roedean, in the MRC Futurity Stakes (1600), part of the fact the race attracted a fi eld below the usual standard. Apart from Fields Of Omagh, only last start C F Orr Stakes winner the Asian Mile Series. The champion underlined his greatness with a last to fi rst win in the Tattersall’s WS Cox Plate (2000m) Perfect Promise and the aging Mr. Murphy had won at Group 1 level. The rise in distance could have been the reason, as the at Moonee Valley in October, his last race start at the grand old age of nine years. race didn’t attract the usual level of speedsters testing themselves at 1400m. Even so, the grand old Fields Of Omagh (8YO) was good enough to outgun his rivals in track record time. The old horse relished being towed along behind a cracking pace set by Live In Vain and Shinzig. Capable colt Red Dazzler (who had started favourite in the Caulfi eld Guineas in the Spring) hung on well for second after doing all the chasing in third spot. Perfect Promise had the race run to her liking, and ran on for fourth, good enough for trainer Lee Freedman to confi rm a trip to Dubai for the mare. She ran sixth in the Dubai Duty Free at Nad Al Sheba while Fields Of Omagh fi nished seventh. The luckless runner in the Futurity was Fields Of Omagh’s stablemate Niconero, who had an interrupted run to fi nish fi fth. Australian Racing Fact Book A Guide to the Racing Industry in Australia 2000 - 2001 Published by the Australian Racing Board December 2001 1 Although every effort has been made to ensure the information provided in the Australian Racing Fact Book, this publication may contain inaccuracies or typographical errors. The Australian Racing Board assumes no responsibility for any such inaccuracies, errors or omissions in this publication or in other documents referred to within the publication. We would appreciate being notified of any errors that are discovered. 2 FForewordoreword The Australian Racing Board is pleased to introduce the third edition of The Australian Racing Fact Book, our annual reference guide to the Australian thoroughbred racing industry. In a few years we will celebrate the bicentenary of racing in Australia. In the almost 200 years since its beginnings, a three day meeting held in Hyde Park in 1810, Australian racing has become not only one of this nation's best loved sports but also a major component of the economy. By 2001 thoroughbred racing has grown to become an industry that generates a gross economic impact of $7.74 billion, and provides work, directly and indirectly, for 249,000 people. When you bear this in mind it is only to be expected that there is keen interest, from both within the industry and more generally, in records relating to the health and performance of the Australian thoroughbred racing industry. Our intention in producing the Fact Book is to meet this demand by assembling a range of useful facts and figures as a handy guide to any person seeking information on major aspects of the industry.
