    THOMAS MEIKLE, 1862-1939 The founder of the Meikle Organisation sailed from Scotland with his parents in 1869. The family settled in Natal where Thomas and his brothers John and Stewart gained their first farming ex­ perience. In 1892 the three brothers set off for Rhodesia with eight ox- wagons. Three months later they had completed the 700 mile trek to Fort Victoria. Here they opened a store made of whisky cases and roofed over with the tarpaulins that had covered their wagons. Progress was at first slow, nevertheless, branches were opened in Salisbury in 1893, Bulawayo and Gwelo in 1894, and in Umtali in 1897. From these small beginnings a vast network of stores, hotels, farms, mines and auxilliary undertakings was built up. These ventures culminated in the formation of the Thomas Meikle Trust and Investment Company in 1933. The success of these many enterprises was mainly due to Thomas Meikle's foresight and his business acumen, coupled with his ability to judge character and gather around him a loyal and efficient staff. His great pioneering spirit lives on: today the Meikle Organisation is still playing an important part in the development of Rhodesia. THOMAS MEIKLE TRUST AND INVESTMENT CO. (PVT.) LIMITED. Travel Centre Stanley Avenue P.O. Box 3598 Salisbury Charter House, at the corner of Jameson Avenue and Kings Crescent, was opened in 1958. The name Charter House was given by The British South Africa Company to its administrative offices. It is now the headquarters of Anglo American Corporation in Rhodesia. Altogether there have been seven Charter Houses in Rhodesia, of which two remain ; one in Salisbury and one in Bulawayo.

  • 1. Charles Morris Woodford
    1. Early life and education Charles Morris Woodford was born in Milton next Gravesend in Kent on 30 October 1852, the eldest son of five children—three sons and two daughters— of Henry Pack Woodford and his wife Mary. The Woodfords lived at 91 Milton Road opposite a large park and the Gravesend Grammar School. Gravesend is a large and economically important town on the southern banks of the Thames Estuary with a long history as a trading and commercial centre dating back to Roman occupation. Both Gravesend and Milton are recorded in the Domesday Book, that great rural survey made under command of William the Conqueror and completed in 1068. Both appear as parishes within the Manor of Gravesham (Cruden 1843: 9–10). Gravesend absorbed Milton in 1914. Henry Pack Woodford was a prosperous wine and spirit merchant with premises at 146 Milton Road (Kelly Directories Ltd 1903). The building still stands. Henry Pack Woodford had assumed ownership of the family firm after the co-partnership with his father, Edward William Woodford, was dissolved in 1841 (The London Gazette, issue 20021, 24 September 1841: 2381). Mlambo Excerpt More information 1 Introduction: Zimbabwe in Historical Perspective The Land and the People Zimbabwe, formerly a British colony known as Southern Rhodesia until 1965 and, thereafter up to 1980, as Rhodesia, is named after historical Great Zimbabwe monuments built of stone that are near the southern Zimbabwean town of Masvingo (formerly Fort Victoria). Built between AD 1270 and 1550, these structures, about which more will be said later, are the second-largest man-made structures from Africa’s remote past next only to the pyramids of Egypt. The country obtained independence from Britain on 18 April 1980, following a protracted civil war that pit- ted a dominant small white population that governed the country against the African majority from the 1960s onwards. Zimbabwe’s largest city is Harare, the capital. Other major urban centres are Bulawayo, the sec- ond largest, and Masvingo, Mutare, Gweru, Kwe Kwe and Kadoma. Zimbabwe is a landlocked country in south-central Africa covering a total of 390,580 square kilometres. Map 1.1 shows the geographical location of Zimbabwe and its major towns. It lies between the latitudes of 15.37 and 22.24 degrees south and longitudes of 25.14 and 33.04 degrees east. It borders the following countries: Mozambique to the east, South Africa to the south, Botswana to the south-west and Zambia to the north. Zimbabwe lies almost entirely more than 300 metres above sea level and is dominated by the Central Plateau (Highveld) watershed which runs through the middle of the country from the border with Botswana in the southwest to the east where Mt Nyangani is the highest point in the country at 2,592 metres.

    CHAPTER 6 o/u/i/eer reyintenfo > m di/ary -nuyn a n d na/f/anrsn/ Natal’s history was regularly punctuated by wars, violent disturbances and calls to arms. This chapter argues that an important and neglected reason for this was the militarism that pervaded the colony. Militarism, in turn, was the carefully nurtured product of white men, something woven deep into the constructions of settler masculinity. Militarism in dictionary terms is ‘an excess of military spirit’ or a 'tendency to overvalue military power or to view things from a soldier’s point of view’. While there are a great many definitions of the term (Berghan 1981), these ones will suffice. This chapter looks at the gendered mentalities that were expressed through militarism and how this militarism impacted on the region and defined the class and gender identities of the ONFs. Natal’s colonial history was characterised by concern about defence. The proximity of Zululand with its large black population served as a constant reminder of the 'black threat’. Even after the Zulu kingdom had been defeated in the 1879 war and thrown into disarray by the civil wars of the early 1880s, white settlers remained vigilant. Evidence of their sus­ picion and vigilance was to be found in the establishment and maintenance of a civilian military capacity. 139 Volunteer regiments were established under the auspices of the colonial government. Three of them that were based in the Midlands will be examined in this chapter: the Natal Carbineers (NC), the Umvoti Mounted Rifles (UMR) and the Natal Mounted Rifles (NMR).

    Memories and Contestations of The Scramble For Zimbabwe: Chivi (Mashonaland), c.1870-1892 Gerald Chikozho Mazarire To be published in F. Kolapo (ed.) Essays in Honour of Kanya Forstner (July 2006) This chapter discusses the events unfolding in Chivi in southern Zimbabwe on the eve of colonisation as they are remembered by the local people. This is placed in the wider context of Chivi’s position as a contested terrain fought over between the British and the Transvaal Boers. Emphasis is placed on the implications of this conflict on the validity of the Rudd Concession that was used by the British South Africa Company to occupy what eventually became Zimbabwe. Because Chivi lay also on the route used by the British occupying force, the Pioneer Column, to enter Mashonaland, much of the memories of this episode and the Anglo-Boer conflict are still embodied in its landscape in the form of roads, graves and forts. It is possible to reconstruct the history of colonial conquest and all its contradictions and ambiguities by analysing the peculiarities written in these local landscapes and oral traditions decades after the Scramble with new insights on the subject.1 Introduction From the 18th century onwards the South has been the major route used to penetrate the Zimbabwean plateau. It is important to highlight the significance of the area between the Runde and Tugwi rivers, modern Chivi district, in south- central Zimbabwe as a place on this historic route through which most contacts between the plateau and the south have been made. Traversing its rugged landscape and the maze of dusty roads in a southwesterly direction just close by ‘Mafuta’2 and Chikofa townships, the most spectacular feature noticeable on its commanding landscape is the Pioneer Road or mugwagwa waMapasure: literally Mapasure’s Road.
