As a life-long resident of Fayette County, it is an honor to serve as President of the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. I am a product of 2 Fayette County schools: Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic School and Oak Hill High School. With that educational foundation, I graduated from Concord University and began working in the community I call home shortly after graduation. With professional advancement opportunities present, and limitless outdoor activities to keep my family busy, I am proud to raise my 3 children in our little piece of heaven. As a member of the commercial lending team at BB&T, I am privileged to serve the people of Southern West Virginia, helping to advance business activity in my home county. My role allows me to see first-hand the hard working nature and entrepreneurial spirit of the business community in Fayette Aaron Kemlock, Chair - BB&T County. The Chamber Board is a group motivated to advancing the local economy by providing businesses various networking opportunities and creative ways of marketing their business. 2018 promises to be a very exciting year and with this group’s spirit and enthusiasm, I am confident that Fayette County’s best days are ahead.
I have had the pleasure of calling Fayette County my home for over 25 years. Fayette County is an amazing place to live, play, work and raise a family. As the Administrator of the local health department, I am committed to making sure our citizens have a healthy and safe environment in which to live. I am also dedicated to promoting healthy lifestyles and helping to develop strong, healthy communities. Fayette County has so much to offer with its beauty and outdoor adventure activities. Being a member of the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors over the past few years has given me an opportunity to work with various businesses. I feel privileged to work with such a dedicated group of business leaders. The Chamber works diligently to promote growth for its business members through collaboration, education, networking and marketing. Now with the major improvements being made to Teri Harlan, Vice Chair the education system, I believe we will see accelerated growth in Fayette County and I am happy to be a part of that. The future is looking bright for Fayette County. We would love to have you join us.
Fayette County is a place of true beauty. It is the place I’ve called home for the last 29 years and will continue to do so for the rest of my life. No matter where my travels take me I love coming home. The people, the places, the outdoor experiences, the kindness and warmth of the community are unparal- leled, these things truly give a meaning of what it to call a place home. Being apart of the Chamber Board has given me opportunity to grow both in business and in my person life. It has given me the opportunity to get more involved in my community and lend a helping hand to projects and events that important to local business and for community growth. I am proud to be from Fayette County West Virginia and am proud to serve on the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce Board.

Serving with the Chamber has been a lot like Scouting. You come into the program not knowing anyone, so you build your relationships by volunteering on different projects. Building the team, furthering the call to action. Then you agree to become an officer and each year move into different chairs and responsibilities. This is my last position as an officer of the Chamber, the Past Chair. I’m not sure where the time went, but it was a pleasure to work with everyone and I want to thank you for making my four years some that I will fondly remember for a long time. I look forward to our continued partnership, different faces, new projects that will continue to move us forward for years to come.

So, here are a few tips that may help you adjust to this wonderful condition. No matter how wired or wireless you may be, you’ll never be more than a 15 minute drive from a hiking trail or swimming hole. If you commute to work, it’ll be more like a Sunday drive. We’re east of the state capitol and the Charleston metropolitan area. Many state and federal officials who work there choose to live here in Fayette County. We really enjoy the best of both worlds -- access with the possibility of isolation, connectivity with a chance for detachment. More than 85 percent of the county is forested. More than 10 percent is protected as parkland. We are located east of Charleston, the state capitol and north of Beckley. In 2016, Fayette County became part of the Beckley Metro- politan Area increasing our access to more jobs, trails and resources spanning three county areas.
5 Healthcare
Fayette County’s healthy climate and aging population have nurtured a healthy-living culture here ideally suit- ed to retirees and young families in search of a stress- free environment. Far from the cacophony of cities, with all the advantages that come with proximity to national parks, it’s little wonder many health-conscious folks are investing here.
Plateau Medical Center and Montgomery Memorial Hospital are two of the state’s renowned small medical centers, though large medical centers are an hour’s drive away or less. Many Fayette County natives grow up caring for their elderly neighbors in tight-knit communities and are naturally good care-givers, so finding healthcare help here is not a problem.

Education in Fayette County Fayette County has become a center for alternative educa- tion in West Virginia, particularly among families in search of friendly communities with access to the outdoors. A strong, in- dependent school movement has been established, and home- schoolers will find a supple support network awaiting them. Several church-based educational programs are also available. Public school educators in the county are renowned for their dedication and participation in education as community leaders outside the classroom.
Much of the county is also networked with good broadband sys- tems that make online higher-education an option for distance students. Many of the state’s best institutions of higher educa- tion maintain campuses within an hour’s drive.
7 Boy Scouts
Fayette County is a world-class scouting destination, and its outstanding outdoor-recreation opportunities have long drawn many scouts to the region. Many a merit badge has been awarded after a weekend of hiking, biking, padding, or climbing, and many of the county’s guides and outfitters are qualified merit-badge counselors. Drawn by our national parklands, the Boy Scouts of America established its National Jamboree center here in 2013 within the Bechtel Family National Reserve, an outdoor-recreation complex of more than 10,000 acres adjacent to the New River Gorge National River. The re- serve is also home to the Paul R. Christin High Adventure Base, one of five such adventure facilities nationwide. The World Scout Jamboree will be hosted here in 2019.
8 Festivals of the New River Gorge
Terry Ritterbush, WWP If you like a good festival, you’ll love Fayette County. We live in a perpetual celebration of life punctuated by festivals as large as the Boy Scout Jamboree and the Bridge Day Festival, both of which attract tens of thousands of visitors to the region. Homecomings and family reunions are particularly popular here where thousands of loggers and coal miners once lived: though mining waned long ago and former boomtowns are now friendly and quite towns, the descendants of those miners return year after year. Many outdoor- adventure resorts host music and outdoor-recreation festivals through the warm months and into fall and spring.

9 Lodging in the New River Gorge
Fayette County has long welcomed road-weary travelers in search of respite as well as world-weary adventurers in search of recreation. Some of the oldest inns in West Virginia remain along its byways, former stage-coach stops that hosted westward-bound pioneers.
Perhaps more astonishing are the county’s many vaca- tion cabins, most of which are available for rent. Thanks to interstate accessibility and proximity to such large recreation areas, cabins are in constant demand. Many outdoor-adventure parks include whole villages of cab- ins, though many more can be found in peaceful isola- tion. Camping is also a popular form of lodging here.
10 Dining & Shopping Fayette County’s singular shops and restaurants attract patrons from hundreds of miles away. Many of its gourmet restaurants were established to serve tourists but have set the standard for all restaurants here alongside long-lived vernacular dining venues, notably those that serve home- style and ethnic European and Appalachian cuisine. Many specialty shops were similarly established to serve tourists but have since created their own local audiences. Outdoor sports shops in particular have helped bolster a local market for biking, hiking, climbing and kayaking gear. Such distinctive stores and restaurants can be found throughout the county alongside national chain stores and restaurants.
